[Q] Flashing to unbrick Shostock2 using a custom kernel? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I had my phone go into a boot loop this morning. It runs Shostock2 (3.1.0) and it's been running fine but I was having su pop-up problems and quick battery drain, so I was either going to try 3.1.1 or revert to 3.0.5. I've been running Shostock2 for a while now.
Anyway, I went to reboot into CWM, and it would not go. I get a very light flashing on the screen until I release the buttons, then it just boots normal. Once it boots, I have about 5 seconds before it freezes and re-boots itself. In that 5 seconds I've tried putting it in airplane mode or using the boot menu to get to recovery. As always though, in 5 secs it freezes and in 30 it reboots again.
I can get into download mode, so I was planning on using heimdall (I'm on Linux) to flash the UCLE5 packages posted by creepyncrawly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181) or the UCKH7 packages posted by Entropy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432).
My preference is to use the UCLE5 package. Can this be used to recover from this?
And my real question is: Can I replace the zImage from that package with a zImage from the cherrypicker.tar and flash that with heimdall in one step INSTEAD of using the zImage that came with the UCLE5 pkg?
TIA

First thing to try...
hold the three buttons for recovery mode down continuously while the boot screen appears, disappears, and appears a second time. See if that gets you into recovery.
You could try replacing the zImage, retar and flash. Might work ok. It would be much quicker and more effecient to flash with the stock kernel, and then use mobile odin to flash cherrypicker.

Genius. I thought I was doing the boot into recovery correctly. Apparently not. I used the instructions above to get into CWM and reflash Sho 3.0.5 (the last really stable one for me). All looks good.
Thanks very much!

Most of the time, if you let go of the buttons on the first boot screen, the phone will boot into recovery, so unless you know to try it, you wouldn't usually think of that.

I wonder if this behavior is device dependent - I've heard numerous people post that this works for them, but on both my phone and my wife's, this has never worked. I've always had to hold the 3-button combo until the second time the GalaxySII logo comes up for them to get into recovery successfully.

Exactly. I was letting go of the buttons on the first boot screen and it was going straight to the Shostock logo. I thought I had somehow lost recovery.
The interesting thing from my perspective is that I've booted into recovery quite a few times using the buttons (although mostly using the extended menu) and I don't ever recall waiting for the second boot.
Filing this one under "real damn useful".

[Q] Issue booting into Recovery

I've searched high and low for someone having a similar problem to no avail, so here it goes:
I previously rooted my phone using the one touch root method, and flashed kaosfroyo. I ran that ROM for a good while until I started having issues receiving text messages. I took my phone back to stock to see if that would fix the issue, which it did, but now I can't boot back into recovery to try to re-root. The issue I'm having is that when I try to boot into recovery using either the Vol up+end method or going through the hboot menu, it flashes the Androids on skateboards splash screen and the screen then goes black. I have to pull the battery and restart for the phone to do anything after that. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help!
*I do apologize if this has been covered before, but I've been looking for it for a few hours now and have not found it.*
Flashing back to stock unroots you which means you no longer have a custom recovery. Just download the 1 Click Root apk again, install, and run it. After it has worked it's magic and your phone has rebooted, you will have access to amon-ra recovery and can flash a new ROM.

I actually have tried that, and it doesn't work either. I forgot to mention that, sorry. I run the root, power down, but when I try to boot into recovery it does the same thing.

If you haven't already, maybe try the rooting method on the wiki:
How to Root Eris - XDA Wiki
Instead of the Recovery.img file they tell you to download, I'd suggest using the "1.7.1" recovery by scary alien which is a modified version of amon-ra. It allows the use of other physical buttons to navigate so if your trackball dies, you are still able to use recovery.
Amon_RA 1.6.2 Custom Recovery
If that doesn't work, I'd try following bftb0's instructions in this thread.

With 1-click root, you need to run the app, power down, power back up (like you wanted to make another phone call) - then power down and power up to recovery. From what you describe, you missed that intermediate power-up step.

Yeah, that's what it sounds like to me too. The first few times I rooted my phone I missed that step too and thought I'd bricked the phone, only to realize I needed to boot back up fully and then go into the recovery.
Hello,
I too faced same problem in the initials of rooting. what i did is rooted again, but super one click doest work.
So i rooted with,
unrevoked.com/recovery/
It worked for me.
and for switching recovery, i think best way is via droid explorer. downlaod droid explorer and then download amon recovery, and flash it.

Optimus V Brick!?! HELP!

So I went to flash to my cell using romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Install_from_Stock_Optimus. I got to step 15, and I realized I forgot to place the ROM in my sd card so I restarted the cellphone so I could place the ROM in my sd card, go to reboot to repeat the process and I get a screen that goes:
Fastboot mode started
gpio_i2c: invalid khz: 0
bl: i2c write error
udc_start()
--suspend--
--reset--
--portchange--

Its a blue screen. I just want to flash this Any guides to get me out of this?

In the above guide replace optimus one recovery with optimus v.

Can someone post a link to a recovery file for my phone? You guys are the best.
I followed the above guide, and used the ROM here prepaidandroid.org/index.php?title=How_to_restore_your_Optimus_V_to_almost_original_condition
It reboots, and the same blue screen is up
My brother flashed the wrong recovery, I tried using the tutorial to fix it using fastboot.exe from windows, but it won't work as it can't find the device. windows sees an android device and I installed the drivers from lg, but it refuses to enumerate in adb shell, so I can't connect to it, any ideas?
okay after fiddleing with it a bit, I got the origional recovery mode restored on it, and when I boot into recovery and plug in usb adb can see the device, I have a stock froyo rom how do I restore from here, or can I reflash clockwork from here?

Not sure what recovery files I need or ROM I need or anything, or how to use adb. I've been looking online for the past 3hrs on this stuff.

this only works if you have some sort of custome recovery, My brother had the wrong one for the optimus v (clockworkmod 3.2.0.0) and it wouldn't install any rom.
I just played around with this page until I got the stock bootloader/recovery back, however I'm not sure if this is what we want, you may want to try flashing one of the custom recoveries listed on the site, now that I have the stock I can re-flash anything.

you need to get into a custom recovery, optimus v press back, volume up and power at the same time to boot into a recovery, if you don't have a recovery at all there maybe an issue. so try and boot into a recovery and let me know what you have.

if you can't get into any recovery your device maybe permintally bricked, but don't take what I say as gospel I'm new at this as well, I'm still looking up more info, in the mean time you need to figure out how to get into recovery, google for key combos, also when using a key combo to get into recovery make sure power is the last button you press in the combo, hold down the others then power (while still holding the other buttons) and release as soon as you see the lg logo, it should go away quickly and after a few seconds of black you'll see the recovery, if the lg logo stays up for a while it's trying to normal boot.

Got a little bit of progress....did a full system flash using fastbootroot and NVM OMG its fully booted! wow never thought I'd see the homescreen again...now to try to flash it again hahahaha
Now what verison of recovery and rom should I be looking at?

if you want to get aospCMod on your phone, follow this tutorial, this is what I did for my phone works great.
Now my question to you is how did you use fast boot root tool to get back to home screen because I'm still stuck at recovery
okay I finally managed to fix it, I figured out how to use fast boot root and got a custom recovery, from there I could flash other recoveries, which was importaint because even though I could install any rom I wanted it was stuck in a boot loop where it would keep booting into recovery, So i flashed Xionia_CWMA_12518.4_VM_Recovery.zip from here and under advanced it has an option to fix the boot loop, then from there I could flash a rom and it's fixed.
Lot of work fixin' my first bricked phone, but I learned alot.

Im having a hard time understanding..

Well, today I attempted to install a custom rom. Well when I rooted, then install Rom Manager and the latest CWM, My tablet just resetted. Well now its at the Samsung logo and when I try to get into recovery it just resets. I am not sure If i have the proper instruction on how to get out of this. No matter what I do I always end up at the logo.
Use odin to flash ur tab

I dont see anything for the 4G tab. I mean I'll bypass it and just use wifi, will that still be the same?
I Can't get the tablet to go to download, it just goes black screen. And if i try to do a factory reset, well I can't. It just goes into a bootloop
The Exact steps I did, After following the guide to root, I flashed CWM to the latest version. I then pressed Backup Current Rom (stock/root) after It did that I can only get the samsung logo or a black screen. Not recovery or download

Ice I bet I know what you're doing wrong, I was doing the same thing too... to go to recovery, press and hold the power button+volume down button, once you see the Samsung logo, let go the power button but continue to hold down the volume button.
The you will use volume down to navigate and volume up to select.
PM me if you still have questions I can help you and will be online through out most of the day.

What I mean was that when I saw the two icons, and I went to "Download" It automatically went black screen. Finally though it wanted to show something and I was able to let it reboot with the recovery-cwm_4.0.0.4-sam-tab-10.1.tar.mr5 file
Now I don't know if im rooted but I dont wanna risk anything since I dont have the charger at work, just the USB so ill try to flash a rom tonight.
and I was saying in my other thread(before this all happened) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486095
Will it be safe to use all the roms? I dont use my 4g i just use the wifi.
Make sure you know what model you have, and don't toss around the term 4g as loosely as many seem to these days (I mean around the net, not necessarily this particular part of xda, the term is often used to describe both HSPA+ and LTE devices though both vary greatly in hardware support). Do you actually have a Verizon SCH-I905 or something else?
Flashing the proper ROM onto your device could mean the difference between it working or boot looping.
In the case of the Verizon tab you're best choices are either sticking with rooted 3.2 or flashing build 22 of Roman's CM9 based ROM at this point in time. Choosing the CM9 based builds as of now (2/9/2012) results in lack of modem service (no 3g/4g support) on the Verizon tabs.

[Q] Download Mode Not Recognized By PC

Well my good friend just bricked his Fascinate trying to go to the newest glitch kernel for ICS. It has been handed to me for fixing like many times before . This time though i don't think i can quite fix it. So the phone will automatically boot into ICS Recovery(5.5.0.4).
Here is what I have tried thus far from Recovery:
Wipe Cache Partition(Check)
Wipe Dalvik Cache(Check)
Wipe Data Factory Reset(Check)
This yields no results the phone just boots back into recovery. With that in mind I have/had tried this:
Wipe Cache Partition(Check)
Wipe Dalvik Cache(Check)
Wipe Data Factory Reset(Check)
Install teamhacksung_fascinatemtd-ota-eng.BUILD6.1
This too yields NO results. The phone again boots back into recovery. Actually it didn't boot straight into recovery I had to play with it for a bit.So the logical thing to do from here would be too boot into download mode and go from there either via Heimdall or Odin. Unfortunately neither are doing anything. The phone doesn't get recognized in either program. "Maybe it is your cable or your computer" I wish that were so but when hooking up my Fascinate no issues with either program. I have tried DaleV's methods for both programs and nothing. I have even tried getting the phone into download mode via the charging plug to see if there was any difference with that and no. I don't want to say it but i think the phone is completely BRICKED. So if any of you good forums members have any advice it would be greatly appreciate it.

I had this problem yesterday too. You have to flash build 1 not 2 then flash 6.1 again. It worked for me. Flashing 1 might give you an endless boot loop with your animation, but that's normal. Just pull battery and 3 finger into recovery and flash 6.1

3 fingering into recovery CAUSES a bootloop like the OP is describing.
He can try it out, but I'd be surprised if it did anything but bootloop. If I'm reading his post right, he can get into download mode, but the device won't be recognized by the computer? I'd recommend odin and starting fresh, but if the devices isn't being recognized then I don't know. Maybe look into getting/making yourself a jig? Although I thought those were more useful for getting INTO download mode..
I'm not sure, even though you said you can plug your phone in and it'll work, I'd just be trying different ports/cables and crossing my fingers

Yup went ahead and tried doing that as well. No other combination of cables does anything. So i believe the consensus here is.....Bricked Not cool but the upgrade deal that best buy is offering makes the Galaxy Nexus all that much more tempting.
I'm wondering how he got it bricked in the first place? If he flashed the correct kernel for his device I don't see how that could happen. Did he flash the wrong kernel for his device? If he did, maybe the you would need the drivers for that phone? Just kinda thinking out loud, that's pure speculation. Did he flash the kernel and then mess with overclocking or anything?
One other thing I've heard of that you might look into is the "unbrickable mod", but as I understand it, it's done at the hardware level so if you're not fairly comfortable with the idea of taking your phone apart I don't know if that would be an option.
Is it possible to flash CWM through ICS Recovery, then say ..stock rom, check if computer can pickup the phone and go from there??

My apologies i forgot to mention that. The funny thing is when we first got our phones he bricked his by setting setCPU all the way up LMAO. So i think this was the time of superclean on eclair so we didn't even have any over clock kernels or anything of that nature. This time around he tried doing the same idk what method though. He tried going to 1.4ghz but i don't believe that he properly messed with the multiplier or voltages.Unbrickable mod would be awesome but it would have had to have happened before this instance i believe. Even at that though given the situation i don't think it would have helped.

This seems like a good idea but just speaking to him a couple minutes ago he phone is no longer going into recovery either. If it was it may have been worth a shot but I doubt it would have done anything. I think due to his tinkering he has had a hardware failure at this point.
Ah, that makes sense, and yes I'd say you're right about the unbrickable mod. Not sure that it would've been able to help in this case where the hardware was pushed beyond its limits. Just because you have the option to max out the OC settings doesn't mean it's something you should do, lol! He might have been better off with the stock ICS kernel (which doesn't include the ability to OC).
I'm sad to hear this. I've been searching the Internet for people with the same issue. The same thing happened to mine except I have a captivate. I flashed the new ICY Glitch kernel from CWM and my phone buttons immediately went hay-wire, where all buttons performed the "back" function. So I pulled the battery and rebooted to find only a bootloop. The button recoveries nor download modes will work, so I used my jig I made to get into download mode, and just as you said no computers nor odin will recognize the device. Nothing, nada. Although it will charge the phone as it will show the big battery icon charging.. go figure. I wonder if the Glitch guys know about this yet. I would post but I'm still a noob so don't have enough posts or whatever you have to have.

I would post but I'm still a noob so don't have enough posts or whatever you have to have.

First, if you're on a captivate, then you could probably be better helped in those forums.
Second, can you not use the volume and power buttons to navigate in recovery?
Believe me ive checked those forums, that is why I am here, looking for any glimmer of hope. No the button recoveries wont work, ive tried a zillion times a zillion different ways.

Help Please! Phone won't turn on

First off, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods, you may move this thread if need be. I was just shown this website about two weeks ago by a friend and have only been a lurker since. So I apologize if my first post is one needing assistance.
First off, I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to doing all this reboot, recovery, root, etc. But I can usually figure stuff out. I have researched how to do all this stuff over the last to weeks learning how to do all this. Let it be known that I was already rooted with siyah 3.4.2? kernel with superuser, CWM, and had ROM Manager downloaded. Last night I had finally decided to try and download a custom rom (AOKP), and I went through ROM Manager to try and reboot into recovery mode..the phone went dead. I have not been able to turn the phone on since last night. I have tried taking the battery out, trying to hold down volume buttons/power button to get into download mode, etc..But nothing is happening. When I power on, I can see the screen where it says "Samsung Galaxy SII" w/ the triangle, but then the screen goes black and nothing. In a dark room, you can see that the screen looks like it's trying to fire by flickering, but again...nothing. Sorry if this has been alot of reading, but I just want to be as thorough as I can. If anybody can tell me what went wrong, and how it might be fixed, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Remove the battery and replace it. hold the up/down volume and power button. The screen should light up. Continue to hold them until the phone goes into recovery mode. The phone should turn on and off a couple times before it enters recovery. Then wipe the data and caches. Hopefully at the point the phone will work. If it wont work you could always try to buy a download jig. They are only a couple dollars and can easily be found with a search.

That usually cause more trouble than it's worth. Espeically for a noob. I had been in that situation back when I first start doing it. First thing I used was CWM and I had the same/similar problem.
That is why everyone here always mentioned to not use CWM.

Not trying to be that way, just from my past experience with CWM. If you think I was being rude "talk out of my ass like that". Then I am sorry to bother for responding... Thank you for letting me know (no pun intended).
@BigCohiba,
You need to get into download mode. You should be able to do that without using a jig. With the phone off, but with the battery still in the phone, hold down vol- and vol+ (but not power) while you plug in the usb cable.
The following instructions given by fakhri should also work:

After that, flashing siyah kernel alone may be enough to allow the phone to boot, but you may have trouble finding a Siyah in Odin flashable tar format.
...or, flash straight stock UCKH7, or flash stock plus root UCKH7. You can find download links for those in one or the other of the guides linked in my signature.
Please let us know your success or problems as you proceed.

You can't tell me you don't use cwm, that's what I mean. Any custom kernel has it baked in and is necessary to flash custom roms

Why would someone not use it? I'm confused.
Rom manager is an issue, not recovery...

Understood. I must have missed understood the comment. That is correct, CWM Recovery is builded into the custom ROMs.
