Hi. I come from Apple's iPhone, and don't know many things about Android.. One of the annoying "problems" Android software has, is not recognizing ad hoc hotspots... I googled for an answer, and found that there is an app called Wifi Ad Hoc enabler, but is compatible with only 5 or 6 Android devices. So i ask, if there is a way to fix this on my Galaxy s3 and be able to recognize and connect to ad hoc hotspots......
Can't be done yet but apparently some people are working on it.

Thank you for your answer... I suppose, that when a solution is found, it will be posted in this section... Thank you again...
In most cases people whe create/need ad-hoc hotspots, they are trying to tether the phone on the computer's internet connection.
If you're running Windows, try using Connectify on the computer (Windows 7 only). That application will create a real AP hotspot and not ad-hoc connections.

I tried to create a hotspot from my laptop using Connectify, but it sais AP is not supported, so i am still unable to see the wifi from the phone.. I tried creating a hotspot from my iPad, and no luck either . I think it is the same problem with ad hoc...

This question should be posted in the general section, not development....
BUT, android can't natively connect to ad-hoc networks without a modified wpa_supplicant. You should search in the forum for your Samsung tablet for a compatible wpa_supplicant file, and you must be rooted to install it.

Is your device temp rooted or you have wifi tethering plan with Verizon?
You can download and run CleanTool to temp root your device and install any wifi tethering app on the market.
Guys have any of you u shared your laptops internet connection to the phone? via WiFi or a USB cable? Im sure a smartphone of this generation should be able to do something like this but Im just not able to figure how.
I have an unlimited Internet connection on my PC so it would be nice if I could get the same on my mobile for browsing when home.
Please help.
Not to the phone, but from the phone.
Not sure how you would turn your laptop into a hotspot?
Set up an Ad-Hoc wireless network on your laptop.

Well, tried ad-hoc, it dint work. Tried connectify, that dint work either.
Then got to know about the windows program mhotspot from mhotspot.com. It has turned my laptop into a virtual wifi hotspot through which my mobile can connect to the net through.
Good for those who have a limited or slow data connection on their phone.
connectify works in my laptop
Connectify works perfectly fine for me too... What error do you get, mate?
any tutorial for conectify? noob sorry

Install, start, press the big button, connect from your phone
@OP: what you're looking for is called reverse tethering. Search for it, there are lots of solutions.

Hi all,
I just got my brand new Samsung Galaxy SIII
All is well except for the fact that the phone is failing to even detect the adhoc wifi that I've setup. I get my home's internet using a mobile cdma usb modem and I've setup an adhoc wifi connection thru internet sharing option in windows 7.
Here's a twist though: When using my Ipod Touch- I noticed that the Ipod manages to detect the same adhoc wifi network I've setup- the Ipod also manages to connect to the network but fails to provide any internet. (from windows 7)
Oddly enough- the only way I can get adhoc wifi to work is when I use it on my Ipod from Linux Ubuntu. I cannot connect to adhoc wifis from either windows 7 or linux on my SGS3.
Is there any way I could get my SGS3 to detect and connect to the adhoc wifi from either windows 7 or Ubuntu with the mobile internet that I use at home??
Bump. Anyone??
Android's Wifi manager by default does not detect or use adhoc networks.
There exist several patches (requires root) but I'm not sure if they have been confirmed to work/ported to the S3 yet.
CM9 should include adhoc support.
I strongly recommend using the Windows7 application 'Connectify' which creates a full-fledged ap-mode network and not an adhoc while still allowing you to keep connected to any current Wifi network.
I guess similar tools might exist for OsX and Ubuntu Linux but I've only used them in forward tether and not reverse tether so far.
By the way, this is a forum not a support center. So it might take some time to get a reply.
Bumping after 3 hours is just rude seeing that we all try to work together for free

This issue is ICS Related, I had the Galaxy nexus for 6 months, i tried every solution that is out there with no luck, hopefully CM will include this fix or else use "Connectify" which personally I don't recommend.

If you haven't tried it already- then I suggest you try disabling your antivirus when you share the network. That's what I did in the end to finally make it work.
Hi,
I am trying to transfer files to and from my lappy using Wifi Direct, and don't know how.
I'm using a Dell XPS with Intel MyWifi direct. If I scan for Wifi direct devices from the phone, it turns up nothing.
I can share internet from my laptop to the phone no problem (using normal Wifi on the phone).
Can someone help me to set up file transfer using wifi direct? Thanks will be given.. :good:

Thanks, I'll definitely try that.
But shouldn't it be possible without another app?
At least pairing and receiving?

BUMP!
Hasn't anyone used the Wifi Direct on this phone??
If tou had searched a bit b4 posting, youd would have found out, that wifi direct is not working on all wifi adapters on your pc.
that being said, samba fileshare is a good alternative, or use droobox.

You could also try Airdroid, it's a cracking little app.

Use Connectify and create a AP-Hotspot (which creates "real" Wifi network, not Ad-hoc)
It is however not compatible with some (usually cheap low-cost) Wifi adapters/cards/USB-Sticks and requires Windows 7.

hello. I am trying hard to share files using WIfi direct(galaxy note 10.1 under german JB), to an Asus Laptop (intel MyWifi dashboard installed).
I can use the Wifi as Hotspot, but not in Sharing Files.
Struggling, installing drivers, many options..still not possible. I have the same problem. recognising, but refusing to connect each other.
REmoving firewall or adding exceptions, it seems it's a problem of security controls.
IF SOMEONE could help us.
NB : sharing files from any samsung to each others works prefectly well (tab to note, or note galaxy S...)
thanks for reply.

Use connectify
use samsung link that comes with samsung kies and your phone to transfer files .. via wifi.. you can download it from samsung official website if its not there ..
wifi direct
i know wifi direct can use between android. these dont use ure home network or router (now is using this method).
means transfer files from andriod phone to other android phone.
and its preety blazing fast compared to bluetooth (eg; u can transfer hd video in very short time).
the main point is fast transfer speed.... and on the go.
i'm also curious about same technic for a laptop.
means transfer files from andriod phone to laptop, like wise. or laptop to laptop.
it said the technology also have in laptop, but i also cant find the solution.
maybe we still have to wait for anothe year or +.
Do you use non stock roms like asop?
If so wifi direct will not work.

What is your OS on your PC? I know Windows has the ability to create an ad hoc network using the wifi card of the PC. No special app needed. Go to the Network control panel, click Add, and select Ad Hoc network.

would you be so daring enough as to try installing WiFi Ad Hoc enabler v1.8 and see if it works? LOL im scare it might mess up my wifi and i have no idea how to fix it.

I stumbled across this accidentally while searching for an internet passthrough .apk:

Turns your windows 7 computer into a WiFi hotspot.
Works Great! Seems faster than internet passthrough.
I never knew windows 7 had this capability. Cool.
so there is no need for internet passthrough anymore.

Lool honestly im not i just dont see the point of updating my barely useable laptop anyways, forgot to update here. I used zt ad hoc switcher and got my phone to detect ad hoc, surprised both wifi ad hoc enabler and manually overwrite wpa_supplicant failed but this app works fine.
