Safe to remove stock messaging app? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I've installed go sms and have checked the option to deactivate notifications from the stock messaging app and only receive them from gosms. I am still getting two notifications sometimes. I was wondering if it was safe to freeze the stock messaging app via titanium backup. By the way I'm rooted on tmobile. Any help, thanks.

never remove any stock app like messaging or browser as these are connected to core processes and will render the phone useless.... don't even disable the messaging app as this will cause issues. Just go into the options menu of the sms app and turn off notifications for stock sms then adjust your third party sms app notifications as needed...

Wow never occurred to me to go in the stock app and disable notifications. Thanks a lot guys.

Disable the whole app from your app management in the settings too!

I only get the 'uninstall' option come up and not disable! I'm wanting to disable the default message app as I'm using GoSMS and currently encountering MMS issues. Would like to narrow down the cause by disabling the messages app....any help would be appreciated.
UPDATE: Solved

Saving text app settings? Handcent or GoSMS

Is it possible to backup/restore the settings of either of these apps? After flashing a new ROM I can restore all my apps and settings via TB but neither Handcent or GoSMS have this ability. I have to tweak all the damn settings and colors which gets annoying. GoSMS has the ability to backup/restore SMS but I don't see anything for the settings and theming.

I manage to make a theme for my Handcent account and then I Sync it with my Handcent account and I everytime I get a new Rom I just login and Restore my theme.. and it works for me... I don't know about GoSMS...
Hope I answer your question...
Does that include customizations to the bubble and text color in conversations?
Believe me, if it's not a feature of go sms yet, give them a week... Those guys are relentless! They're the only stock replacement developers I use: launcher, sms and contacts/dialer are all top notch (GO Weather is still borked though, go figure lol no pun intended haha)

I stand corrected, the feature is already there. GO SMS allows back up of messages AND settings!

I think I'm blind, where is the option to backup/restore settings?
Use titanium backup for all the options it saves all the data, and back your text with go SMS pro.

Weird, my first post-GoSMS ROM flash only restored SMS but not settings while a recent wipe/flash I was able to restore settings as well. Not even TB restored GoSMS settings before.
Just uninstalled Handcent because restoring settings is a major selling point.
EVERY time I restore my Handcent with TB everything is fine. All my settings and customizations. The only thing it won't backup is the sms/mms. That's why I paid for the backup settings. I don't understand why you would be having any problems.
Me either lol. I bought TB pro and far from new to flashing, TB, etc. I'm just glad everything works now.

Hate stock messaging app....?

Hey,
The stock messaging app sucks on this, why does it show messages so wierdly? Like all my messages are at the bottom while all the recieved message are at the top?
It should be one after the other, as in CM7 messaging app that I used on my previous phone.
Someone know how to fix this? or get better messaging app like the cm7?
Check the timestamp of the messages! It might be possible that the app thinks that the messages you've been sent are from the past due to a mis-matching time zone/time setting!
I use go sms pro.
Free from market.

Go to time and date settings untick automatic update then choose your timezone ie: +8 or -4. That will fix your problem.

I also switched from the stock sms application and moved to PANSI SMS... even i replaced the front icon as well. Though i didn't uninstall the stock sms app but i disable all the notifications thats relate with that....
look for the sgs2 4g thread in the themes and apps section. there you'll find a little different mms.apk, flashable via cwm. hope it helps

[Q] Handcent SMS count problem

Hello...I just bought Galaxy S3 and downloaded Handcent sms as a stock messaging app!The problem is that it doesn't show how many messages i haven't read(it is ticked in the options)! The widget icon does, but i cannot put it in the launcher icons...Is there a way to fix the problem..I reinstalled handcent but nothing happened..:/
I don't think you can do anything about it.... Sadly. :/
Just rate the app and write ur problem in the description. Hopefully the dev will update...
Till then touch can try go sms or chomp sms.
Both are very good.

You can configure this in Apex launcher.

[Q] Samsung Stock Messaging App

I've used Chomp and Handcent on my prior phones.
Call me crazy, but I actually like the stock messaging app on my S5. I even love the silly background with clouds.
Question - are there other backgrounds available besides the five that come with the app? I've searched but can't find anything...Or do I need to go back to Chomp or Handcent for that?

You can change the background to whatever you want. You just pick images on the far left and you can set any image you have on your phone. As for the bubble styles, unfortunately you can only use what is already on the phone.
Duh - can't believe I missed that!
Thank you!
Yeah, I love it too.

Android Messages

Having issues where it's seems I'm missing text messages when having Android messages as my default messaging app. When I switch back to Samsung messaging app I'll get new messages.

I've had similar issue with samsung advanced messaging enabled. Give it a try with that setting off in the samsung messages app.

Is that in the Samsung messaging app? Because I'm using Google's messaging app.
