I can't remember how to do this even though I've done it before I think.
I just extracted an apk.gz from titanium backup onto my computer (dolphin browser) and changed the color of one of the icons. Now I'm trying to get it back into the APK and can't remember how to find it.
Does anyone know where the DolphinBrowser/Tuny browser .APK is located at on the phone? I can't find it in /system/app
Its in data/app. Dolphin is not a system.apk unless you put it there.

Thanks!
I was looking in the wrong place then.
Do you know how to extract an .apk and then repackage it as an .apk?
I've gotta run. I'll google it later.

last time I pulled one apart I just dropped it on my SD card, put it on the computer and searched the file, pulled what I wanted out, changed it, dropped it back in. Back to the SD card and re-installed it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
you don't rename it.
on computer you extract it, go into system and you see the apk
it won't let you install on phone by just clicking
put on sd card
go to astro, or root manager
move the memo.apk to system/app
done.
you need to extract the folder with winrar winzip whatever then there is a folder with the apk in it. copy it over to your phone under downloads or where ever you want to put it. then install.
edit: just did all that i said and when i tried to install the apk it says "application not installed"
just did what u said, even rebooted, and still don't see it

read the post above.
you have to move the .apk to system/apps
because memo isn't a regular app.
got the same thing. used astro, place the apk in system/apps. nothing happened. rebooted, still nothing. then even tried using the app manager in astro to install it and it says "there is a problem parsing the package"
Link no longer working... could somebody upload it again please ?
thanks

I've tried this with MIUI (1.7.22) on a SGS Captivate with no success. I have flashed many roms and installed/sideloaded many apps over the past 10 months. I know I'm doing it right, as I have 'installed' other system apps by moving the apk to /system/apps and fixing permissions and ownership. Has this worked for anyone on a MIUI ROM?
Another related question would be - is there a way to export the notes from the stock memo.apk?
i want to change the colors on a couple widgets.
if i took the .apk file from the /data/app/ and copied it to my computer, renamed it from .apk to .zip, opened it and edited/changed the .png files, saved it, rezipped it and named it back to .apk and put it back in /data/app/ folder and overwrote it would that work?

I tried to do just that with SystemUI.apk and had issues. I haven't tried with any other apps. I got around it by using 7zip. Within 7zip you can look in the apk and just drag and drop you're new pngs into the apk without actually extracting and re-zipping anything.
If your not familiar with 7zip. It's a free compression app just google it.
i've heard of 7zip, not sure if i've actually ever used it before though.
do you know is /data/app/ the right place to pull the .apk file from?
Yep, I think that's right the right place for apps that you've installed. System apps are in /system/app.

that will definitely not work. Go get 7zip... never never unzip an app. use 7zip to open the app and find your image folders. drag only those to the desktop.. or a new folder.. then edit and stick those images back into the app using 7zip.
ok.... I have Samsung Fascinate.
PWGB2.0 beta3 ROM
I found the zip containing on here(XDA) somewhere containing the BuddiesNow app for my phone and installed it. I then found the BuddiesNow for Vibrant tweaked for the Fascinate. I went to /system/app and located my BuddiesNow I had placed in there 1st and renamed it .bak
I then placed the Vibrant BuddiesNow app in the /system/app folder.
It worked great. I discovered I liked the Vibrant BuddiesNow app much better.
*************
ok... now my issue. I picked my phone up ealier this week and went to use my Vibrant BuddiesNow app and it was gone. I then long pressed the blank screen and pressed Widgets from the list that popped up. I scroll thru the list and BuddiesNow does not show up in the list.
I then open my file manager and navigate to /system/app folder and BuddiesNow is not in there. Not even the .bak file version.
I then go to my SDcard and find the copy of the Vibrant BuddiesNow app I had originally stored in a folder there and tried to copy it to the /system/app folder. The error message pops up saying that the file already exist and cant paste the file here.
I then booted into recovery, tried wiping partition cache and dalvik cache.
That did not help any. Got same result when I tried to move the file to /system/app folder again.
I then thought I would be cleaver and rename the Vibrant BuddiesNow in my SDcard folder to [BuddiesNow.apk.grid] and then move it to the /system/app folder. AND THEN AFTER PLACING IN THE /system/app FOLDER, RENAME IT TO .APK
That did not work either! It also diappeared.... now I have BuddiesNow.apk,
BuddiesNow.apk.bak, BuddiesNow.apk.grid, all in the /system/app folder and all invisible.
I had the file manager settings to SHOW HIDDEN FILES from the beginning.
I also have tried the SEARCH function in the file manager but it shows no results. I have tried installing many file manager apps and attempting to see if a different file manager would show the files but none did.....
I tried to write this episode as short as possible.. this is the best I could do to cover al the bases...
what could be a fix????????? PLEASE ADVISE! I LOVE MY BUDDIESNOW!
Come one...anyone? I love my buddiesnow app. Please help me out here
hard to belive
hard to believe someone has not seen this before and has an idea how to fix it...
I love this forum anyways

OVERWRITE FILE is not an option to choose... in this particular problem with this
particular apk disappearance, the option to overwrite is not there.
I have had the overwrite option at other times but not now with this issue fo who know what reason.
I am going to factory reset I guess and start over.
hasn't anyone else had the same issue?
Not sure if this would be helpful but when I had a similar issue I just used titanium backup and found the file that "already existed" and removed it. Also, you can use any file manager that allows you to sort by date modified and look for any buddynow files that may be in a folder that you didn't think about looking in
did you maybe moved the app to your sdcard ? sometimes app's widgets wont show if you move them to sdcard. If you did so move it back to the phone's memory

I used the search function in the various file managers I have tried & even searched the entire phone (and also the /system/app )for he disappeared files and got no results...when I get some time next week I am going to sit down and factory reset my phone and start all over.
if it works I will not try the vibrant version of buddiesnow on my phone again,
I will just use the fascinate version of buddiesnow. (the vibrant version sure was nicer tho)....
When adding things to your SD card, like the apk files for apps, I have just been dragging them right onto the card. Should I be making folders for them or anything like that?
I know sounds like a dumb question but i have to ask.
Depends on your level of OCD.
Seriously though, just make one folder at least so if you want to wipe your sdcard later you can just drag and drop one time

if you dragged the apk onto the sdcard and then installed they are fine to move. in this case what you have saved is the installable application. the installed apk is now located in /data/app
hope this helps
Ok... So it goes like this.... You download an apk..... You go to the folder it sits in( diwnlaod folder on your SD card) you tap install.... This install the program into system/data/app
The original file you downloaded will still be in the download folder on your SD card.... If you don't plan on using this download to install the apk again, you can go into the download folder and delete the file... Once u have it installed you no longer need this file....
For safe keeping I actually upload all my downloaded apk files to my box.net account for future use.... And they don't take up space on my sdcard anymore....
All goes back to level of ocd, cause if you don't mind the clutter on your SD card your good to go, me I leave as much space open as possible... For roms, music, etc... Files I think I more important to me....

THANKS Hitman, i did just that. Ive removed the install apk, but i still have them in a folder on my HDD and external HDD
Okay, here's the back story, it's short. My SD card fried on me yesterday. I had a nand backup of my stock setup on that card. That backup contained a couple of voicemails from my 2 year old daughter (not saved/forwarded, just downloaded into the voicemail app) which i hadn't gotten around to saving in the forever style yet. (was going to restore the backup and save them, then jump back to current ROM)
Anyway, i got a utility that will scan the card and found a whole ton of files on there. What's more it looks like it actually pulled a lot of it from within the backup files (no kidding, i'm seeing icons and temporary internet files and that sort of stuff) in addition to stuff stored on the root.
Was hoping someone could tell me what format these files would be in (3gp, mp4, etc.) so i know what to tell it to pull out. it's a trial software and will only let me restore 10 files before it chokes (could probably just run again on another pc though) but can anyone help me? it's doesn't give me a folder structure at all, just files, and they're even named genericly. So if i know what file type i'm looking for i can just grab those and maybe one of them will be it.
thanks!!
I looked before, and believe its something proprietary. Try using ES file explorer or something similar, store a vm and check which folders updated the time and date..start there..only thing I can think of currently.
