Earlier this week I bought a Samsung Galaxy S III for ATT. It already had Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 on it and so I rooted it. Well the day after rooting it I get a message in my notification bar that there's a new software update available from ATT. Am I safe to do this update since my phone is rooted? I doubt the update is anything major, but does that make a difference?

You can apply the update if you're rooted using the method in that thread or by installing OTA Rootkeeper before you apply the OTA. If you apply the OTA directly, you'll need to go back to stock recovery, then install CWM again when it's done. You'll also probably want to backup the Google Search widget (I forget the exact .apk -- search the forums) and restore it after to avoid losing Universal Search.
But the easiest way is to just flash the zip in the thread above through your CWM recovery.
As for the contents of the OTA: It updates the kernel, bootloader, lots of applications, some system libraries, wpa_supplicant and it's firmware (I think that's for wifi), and the modem. I've got it installed and didn't notice a huge difference, but you might. The thread above also includes separate flash files for the kernel and modem in case you want to try just those.
Good luck!

No. There's a zip file there with the OTA but with the bootloader and kernel updates removed. You can flash that to keep your kernel. There's another zip file there with just the bootloader if you want to update that, too. Just flash both (No Bootloader No Kernel, the Bootloader).

UPDATE:
okay so I followed the steps in the thread you provided, and when I go to flash the update zip in recovery mode, i get an error and it aborts the installation. Heres the error:
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") =="
d2att" | | getprop("ro.build.product") =="
d2att"
E:Error in /emmc/I747UCALG1_OTA.zip
(status 0)
Installation aborted.
Any idea as to what this may mean?
I am also getting same error I was on team epics recovery then saw it wouldn't work for that recovery so I flashed a new recovery and still get the same error.
Tried flashing the no boot loader zip. And the no boot loader and no kernel zip

It means you're using the Team Epic recovery and not the one from clockworkmod.com. Try installing the 5.8.4.5 version of clockworkmod.com recovery from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28612095. That link has zip files you can flash from your current CWM recovery.

Download OTA Rootkeeper from the play store, save root, then install the OTA. Reboot and OTA rootkeeper restore root.

Download the zip file for recovery, apply it using your current recovery, reboot recovery from the advanced menu, then apply the OTA zip.
Or use OTA Rootkeeper as also suggested. I prefer my OTA zip personally, but either way will work.

Okay. Wow. So after a lot of trial and error (i think i bricked my phone somehow in the middle of everything, but its okay I found out how to fix it) I have managed to get that update applied. Theres one last problem though. I applied the update by flashing it in CWM recovery. I know I have the update installed because now under baseband version instead of saying I747UCLEM it says I747UCLG1. And Ive tested the google search widget and it's still giving me local search results so that's all good. The problem is that in my notification bar the ATT software update notification is still there. I have currently postponed it for 8 hours, but its still there and the only button I'm able to press is the continue button. I dont want to press this because im afraid the normal ATT update will install over the modded one and the google search widget will mess up and stop displaying the local search results. Also under about device, when I click software update the option for "check for update" is grayed out. Any thoughts on this?

What does it say under build number? IMM76D.I747UCALG1? If not, then somehow you only got the modem installed.
I have the update applied, but I had frozen AT&T Software Update in Titanium Backup, so I wasn't getting the notification. I just tried unfreezing it and checking for an update and was surprised when it said there was one! I postponed it, did a Wipe Data for AT&T Software Update in TiBu, then rebooted and now all is well. When I check for an update now it says I'm up-to-date. So try that.

Yeah, under build number it says IMM76D.I747UCALG1.
I'll give what you said a shot and see what happens. But one thing first, what's TiBu? And also, I'm about to flash a custom ROM on my phone, so is the update issue something that can wait, or should I take care of that before I put on a custom ROM?

Sorry, "TiBu" is my shorthand for Titanium Backup. Chances are any custom ROM you install will remove the AT&T Software Update application, so you won't need to worry about this anymore.

Oh okay. In that case I'll go ahead and put in that custom ROM and report back when everything is done. Again, thanks for the help and patience.
Okay, so I have applied the ROM and everything is good! Well for the most part. At times when there isn't a WiFi signal available and it has to use mobile data, the 4G LTE doesn't work. It will connect to HSPA or 3G. And it happens in areas I know has 4G LTE available. But other than that everything seems to be working good. Just thought I'd share in case anyone was thinking of using the AOKP ROM.

Flashable via Odin
Why would I you need this:
1-You want the 4.2.2 FW 'Alors Voila'
2-You bootlooped or other reason and you don't have a Nandroid / Backup. and No yet official Firmware for Canadian Carrier and you surely don't want to send it to Samsung So you can do this one.
3-Cause I Want it
what its not working:
the Phone ( trying to fix it )
Force Close:
S Note flash the csc so snote won't forceclose . Download
If with the download its still not working so add it manually and put the permission
For files permissions is

For folders

And reboot
Download:
4.2.2 i467M Only ( Canadian 4G Lte Note 8.0 )
Beside you wont see the developer submenu so u cant click on debug. but they're still on the phone, so nobody freak out. Google hasn't taken the "developer" out of its Nexus line, and it's not going to anytime soon. But the settings have been hidden from casual view in the settings menu. Here's how to get them back:
1. Go to the settings menu, and scroll down to "About phone." Tap it.
2. Scroll down to the bottom again, where you see "Build number." (Your build number may vary from ours here.)
3. Tap it seven (7) times. After the third tap, you'll see a playful dialog that says you're four taps away from being a developer. (If only it were that simple, eh?) Keep on tapping, and *poof*, you've got the developer settings back.
for more info visit this link
If u want the s translator download the zip file http://db.tt/ADug1EoL extract it copy s translator to app and set the permission. And now for the libnmsp_vocoder.so add it in system/lib ( and set the permission) reboot the tablet.
if you have the AT&T ( i467 ) Nah do not touch
Do you want the resizable note 2 popup browse? So download this as any app http://db.tt/yGNx9PnV
Enjoy it
Hi, thanks for doing this.
I've been wanting 4.2.2 for my sgh-i467m (Rogers) for a long time.
But I do really need the S-Note function. So I'll wait until you add S-Note
I have a question though. I'm currently paying text messaging add-on $15/mo. Do you think I will lose this function?
And also, phone feature would be so siiick.
I'll wait patiently

I made more researches. it seems that after the update to 4.2.2 the S note is force closing and some its working. now im investigating to see what version is working with no bugs,,,
as for the add ons you tablet will work exactly same as now. so you don't have to worry. I have 5gb/17.5$ I also want to use it so I wouldn't update it in this way if I know it will affect us
the Phone Feature yeah its good. but I decided to keep it on a side for now and witting to see first further aboout the snote.

Thanks, I finally got around flashing. Everything works great and better. Before things like app launching time or keyboard was extremely laggy. But now its gone. Also sometimes touch screen not responding for a second or two is also gone. I cant thank you enough.
I wasnt really going to use the phone feature but that phone app sitting in the app drawer is really tempting to use. Do you have any progress on that yet?
Also, do you think you can port some note3 stuff like aircommand?
Thanks!

The AT&T version has a locked bootloader, so we can't load a custom recovery to make a back up. We do have root, which is great to have.
Can you point me in the right direction to make a back up?
Should those with a locked bootloader not flash this file?
I really appreciate your work on this.
Thank you

Now when its done ur tablet may and may not boot. If its not booting go to recovery mod and clean cache and dalvik. Et voilà!!!!

Thanks for the thumbnail. I did find it in TB and froze it but I'm still getting the update notification in my notification pull down.
Did you restart the phone after
that may work
Don't know if this will work or not, but on the Galaxy S3 the way to stop getting nagged about an OTA was to edit build.prop and replace all references to the old ROM with the new one. So you could try making a backup of build.prop, then edit all references to ZV4 and change them to ZV6. Save the file, make sure permissions are set to rw-, r--, r-- (0644), and reboot.
I would strongly suggest making a nandroid backup first.
Here's how I have been doing it:
1. Download Autorun Manager
2. In settings under advanced enable view services
3. Go to Google Services Framework and disable update...see below.
At your own risk if you decide to try it, of course.

This is the recommended way. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57182591
If the update has already downloaded. Disabling the OTA still wont get rid the the notification. Easy way to get rid of it is long press it and go to app info. This will take you to Google Play Services. Simply uncheck show notifications and the system update in the pull down notifications will go away.
Just a temporary fix to get it out of the way. I reccommend just downloading a ZV6 rooted rom.

Lucky you. Good find. Glad you got it sorted. Now you can relax.
I have a question that I wanted to ask before I go any further. I bought a G3 last week, rooted it and installed twrp recovery, and have done multiple backups.. Had a hardware defect so I had to exchange my phone for another new one. I received a system update just now so I was going to accept the OTA update since its not rooted, completely stock. My questions are will I be able to root and instally twrp after this update and once I install all my apps, and if rooting and installing twrp is successful, can I restore my backup that I did on my other phone, even though its a different phone? Its from the same carrier and same model phone. Thanks for your feedback.

Don't take OTA. Root it and TWRP it. Then flash STOCK ROM ZV6 Deodexed or Odexed, then you'll be up to date and keep root with TWRP.
Major credits again to @zachariahpope for the Lollipop build earlier tonight. Unfortunately getting it rooted from stock won't work. Which is why I proceeded to try the same method from my rooting guide to attempt root. And I am proud to say...I HAVE THE ROOTED LOLLIPOP SONY XPERIA Z3V!!!
And also, I have recovery as well.
If you're going to follow in the same footsteps, please PLEASE remember when you get the supersu file, grab the v2.49 as that is for LOLLIPOP.
@GigaSPX Make one of these in the development section too!!
well, looks like its time to flash
I thought this day would never come!!

If you want root, you need to preroot. Otherwise, you won't have it at all.
Also this is an update: it seems it's still Verizon holding all of us by the edge about VoLTE. I tried activating it but it won't work. Still can't browse and call at the same time dammit.
Is this patched for Stagefright?
rooted lollipop for z3v ,,,,,,,,,, congrats

Giga, any success in actually using Advanced Calling? I can't seem to get it to work, even after "activating" it on the phone

No, that's what I've been trying to tell a lot of people now. It's still all in the hands of the big red...

You must also activate it from your vzw account.

Figured so, just wasn't sure if I'd missed a memo somewhere along the way. Appreciate it!

Yeah, and can't activate it on the Verizon account when it won't let you to.
Has anyone tried installing Xposed? I can't flash to install.

Just installed it. v74-sdk21-arm . Gave me a little scare, as it hung on the Sony logo after rebooting. Also, upon that initial reboot, the lockscreen was vacant and couldn't get beyond what should've been there. Had to long-press power to bring up power menu and select reboot.
Following that, things seem to be working fine. Xposed Installer crashes if you click on xda support links in module pages, and the installation of xposed modules from within the Xposed installer can take significantly longer than it did on KK.

Not sure if this helps, but, I jumped from this phone to the LG G4. We don't have much development but, some rooted users don't have advanced calling because they are rooted. I am a non-rooted user with advance calling. To add another variable to the equation, you have to have the My Verizon Mobile app installed and not disabled to at least initiate advanced calling. Some of the rooted users I think figured that out.

Big thanks here. Fully updated now, and with this tip I'm running xposed as well.
Uninstalled old xposed first (may not have been necessary)
TWRP dirty flashed pre-rooted 5.0.2 zip from post 44 of that lollipop dev thread
After boot TWRP isntalled v74-sdk21-arm module
Installed xposed_installer.apk and added back my most used modules
-chromepie
-xtether (still working )
Didn't bother with xperiaxposed, not even sure if it's updated. Never really used it
Also, I like this boot animation, not that it's of any importance http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/themes-apps/bootanimation-xperia-z3-t3079263

I did much the same but I did not uninstall xposed before I flashed and it wouldnt let me uninstall it after I upgraded to lollipop. But I flashed and installed the files above and it works great. Xperia Xposed works use v1.7 cause it's the only one that works.
Just wish there was a foolproof way to get rid of those useless small apps

They're super useful to me, being all multitasking useful and all. loll
I own an Honor 5x, which I used to have rooted running a TWRP recovery and SuperSU. I wanted to update my phone to marshmallow, but it was an OTA update so i had to unroot and go back to the original bootloader. I did everything needed and got my phone upgraded to marshmallow, and was then hoping i could play pokemon go, but for some reason i am getting the error where it says the game does not support my device, the exact same one that i got when i was rooted. i double checked that i was unrooted by downloading literally every single root checking app on the play store, and all of them have classed my phone as unrooted. i dont want to root my phone again as i have nox for rooted stuff now, and it was a hassle extracting th e recovery.img from the update file as noboby else had it, so i was wondering someone here could help me
thanks in advance!:good:

OTA update does not wipe the entire phone, you need to download the full update and manually wipe your phone and install the Full update to totally remove SuperSu.
You could also uninstall SuperSU from the apps settings before taking the OTA to avoid this problem

So what should I do now, I had already downloaded the update thinking it would fix it. I guess I try to manually uninstall it, seeing as the supersu app has already gone?

Two possible ways imo...
If you don't want to root then
Extract and manually flash stock boot.img, Cust.img and system.img and you are good to go without any data loss (but make a backup to be sure if something goes wrong).
Second is to root your phone, and use an app like 'hide my root' to hide your root from Pokemon go and you are good to go.
The third is to root and unroot using the inbuilt function of SuperSU.
