Hi all,
May i know if i am able to flash a kernel like "siyah" on an unroot S3 by using the default recovery mode on Samsung S3?
If yes, are there any implication as the user does not wish to root but hope to have a better kernel.
Thanks.
Siyah is rooted kernel if you flash custom kernel all kernel is rooted. And you wil flash whit Odin nhot stock recovery.

no you cant,
if you have not rooted and CWM not installed, only throgh odin
major kernels are coming with auto rooting..
Even if i were to use the press vol up button with menu and power key to install the kernel from there, it still wont work?
Its Kernel and not ROM... so must i still use Odin?
Yes Odin is your friend.Feell the power of Odin dhont scare.1 go and learn haw t use Odin in Dev section

Wrong kernel can be flashed via Odin without root if in the correct TAR format see stock rom thread .
Custom kernel likewise if its in TAR format .

Is there any way to get a custom recovery installed on the LQ5 ICS 4.0.4 without flashing a custom kernel?
Related to that, all I'm looking for is a way to make a nandroid backup with restore option, so if there's a third-party way of doing it, I'd appreciate any suggestions.
I've always used CF-Root Kernels, but I just Mobile Odin flashed this ROM and I have stock recovery, so the backup/restore features are gone.
Just flash the latest CF-Root kernel via Odin in the PDA section and you will obtain your custom recovery. No other way for it.

From what I can see, that's LPK 5.5, right?
Can I flash it via Mobile Odin?

I'll be extra cautious, as what I'm seeing here is it might have the emmc brick bug in kernel.
So what ever you do do not wipe using stock recovery.
I'm using the save ROM and loving it. But will wait for any more news.
Though I have wiped multiple times using the dial code.
Yes I believe you just flash the latest CF-Root either via Mobile Odin or normal Odin. As atifsh said, don't wipe anything in the stock recovery as the MMC_CAP_ERASE seems to still be present and will eMMC brick your device, which is a real pain considering Samsung know about this. But it is still only a leaked ROM, so be very cautious.

If you flash other kernel and you don't re-flash then the original one some things like bluetooth will not work....
If you do my procedure you will have CMW, Root & the most important thing: THE ORIGINAL KERNEL!!! :cyclops::good:

When I flashed the Stock_LQ5-CWM.zip above, I lost custom recovery and went back to stock recovery.
Chainfire has released CF-Root for LQ5, so problem solved.
Thanks for the input.
The question is simple. It is already written above but I cam say it again. So the question is can you flash a siyah kernel(or any other custom kernel) with stock e3 recovery? I'm only asking it because we are on the road and there is no way I could go to a computer. Thanks in advance and sorry my bad english,

Definitively not. But, if you are on the road the solution is very simple:
Buy odin mobile pro, download Siyah Odin version and flash with it.

There is easier
Download cwm image from clockworkmod site (or link in my signature / method 1) and put it in your external sd card. Apply update from recovery and you get a temporary cwm to flash all that you need
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
When you enter the stock recovery, apply this update from the sdcard.
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-4.0.1.5-galaxys2.zip
It won't permanently replace the stock recovery but temporarily, so you can replace the kernel with Siyah through CWM.

Hi guys,
Recently I bought a used GSII but it has some problems and I had send it back. Today I bought another used one. Read here on XDA about eMMC Brickbug and this thing scares me, I don't want to brick my phone!
On the first GSII, installed eMMC Brickbug Checker from Play Store and the chip was sane. But this new one I got today has a insane chip it says. Does this mean the hardware is damaged or the kernel has this bug?
Flashing a custom kernel ( for example: Siyah kernel) will it solve this or it will brick my phone? Phone is running stock ICS 4.0.3 and it is not rooted.
Thank you!
If you're on 4.0.3 you have nothing to worry about. Even if its an 'insane chip'. More so if you're on stock and don't intend to mess around with custom kernels, rooting, etc. Its certain 4.0.4 firmwares that have the bug.
If you do wanna root et al, just to be absolutely safe, install a custom kernel like siyah via Odin before flashing custom ROMs or performing a backup, wiping data n all that jazz.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Flashing any custom rom or kernel from dedicated devs like gokhan, codeworkx or dorimanx won't brick your phone with their reputations as elite android experts if u follow detailed instructions carefully as per. Also it will root ur phone automatically..

Thank you guys, I will try to install a custom kernel because I need to root. As for custom ROM I would like to flash Omega v15 but will leave it for later
And for the kernel, which one do you recommend?

flash the .tar file of the latest 'Siyah kernel v4.1.5' thro odin ma8
1) it will root ur phone and install the latest CWM recovery for u.
2) its free from the 'eMMC brick bug' for sure.

p.s I don't like the yellow triangle during start up....can it be removed safely using Chainfire's app TriangleAway?
It comes with a warning. There's always an element of risk however small. So I personally haven't used it. After all its merely cosmetic unless you're worried about your warranty.

I rooted flashing a custom kernel and I like how the phone works. So for now I'm leaving it as is. Will wait for Samsung to release official JB for our SII next month
And the yellow triangle is that one you see during when your phone is rebooting. It appears if you have flashed a custom kernel/ROM.

Good plan, let's pray for it..
Lol.. ofcoz I've done w/ it mate..
I've been just wondering why people still choose a complicated & a risky brick bug method by externally flashing insecure kernel instead a simple easiest way. Guess they think yellow triangle is the doorprized celebration for their 1st flashing experience.

My phone is rooted now and few friends here gave me suggestions of siyah and some...i want to know if I can directly flash the rom from stock recovery mode..i downloaded ROM manager, but it only has clockwork mode and cyanogen i guess.. can i do that using siya?
You need CWRecovery on your phone (sounds like you used a root method that didn't involve using a kernel with CWM if you only have stock recovery). Best way to get it is to flash a kernel that has it built in - Siyah, Dorimanx, etc, etc. There's a number of them; search the development sections of the board. Once you've got CWM on, you'll be able to flash any rom you want.

Siyah is a kernel, not a ROM. And no, you cannot flash a custom ROM from stock recovery. Search for rachmat3's rooting method and use that. Or flash the tar version of siyah or dorimanx via Odin.
ROM manager seems to have some issues with the S2. try to avoid using it as far as possible.
See which ROM you want to use. If it has the new Mali drivers use dorimanx 7.4 else use siyah 4.1.5

Siyah is a kernel developed by gokhanmoral. ROM on the other hand is also called firmware, you can flash them both in clockworkmod recovery, but cannot be done in stock recovery.
As for ROM manager, I've seen people brick their phone using it, so just stick to flashing clockworkmod recovery.

Don't use rom manager, unless you want an expensive brick.
And Rootbox with dorimax is a good combination you can check out

If you are using siyah kernel you can tweak the GPU steps and overclock your CPU using an app called ExTweaks. But note you are not going to get any serious performance boost, your machine tends to be what you have.
hello everybody
my sister bought a new s2 and wants me to make it run on jellybam but as I'm not used to s2 (i have s3) i have no idea how to root the mobile and from where can i get cwm for s2

In http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270 you can find your appropriate kernel, but you need to choose the right one, because the latest kernels are for JellyBean only.
No, you don't need Odin/heimdall and you don't' need a PC even if it's better to have one at hand when it comes to issues.
One hint: read and try to understand everything before flashing. If you are unsure, ask, otherwise there is a chance to brick the device, especially with 4.0.4 stock (-> brick bug)

btw im going to flash the latest jellybam on i9100 so will siyah have any problem regarding the ROM ? i mean will there be any lag or something ?
CWM matters, not the kernel you're actually on.
Of course if you're on 4.0.4's kernel you can't wipe.
