How to transfer sms/mms from GB to ICS? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Is there a way to do this? I've tried TiBu to no avail. A bit of a noob when it comes to Android.
*edit* If it is possible to xfer texts from GB to ICS, is it also possible to merge sms/mms that are already on my gs3?
**edit** I tooled around with the AT&T Messages app for a bit and decided it wasn't for me. Is there a way to merge the sms from the AT&T Messages app with the stock messaging app with sms backup?

I've used MyBackup Pro for a long time; though that over writes

I've been using SMS Backup+ for quite a long time. I have it set to automatically backup up my SMS, MMS, and Call log every 2 hours to labeled folders in my Gmail account. You can also restore after flashing a new ROM (or getting a new phone), and it'll MERGE instead of overwrite.

New version of titanium backup pro has it now.

Good to know, the google play page for this app says it doesn't restore MMS.
"Automatically backup SMS, MMS and call log entries using a separate label in Gmail / Google Calendar. It is also possible to restore SMS and call log entries back to the phone (MMS not supported yet)."
So I've always stayed away from it.

True, it still doesn't restore MMS, but I almost never view old MMS pics on my phone. If you really need to, though, you can always view them in your gmail account instead.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess there is no straight solution to transfer sms and mms from GB to ICS.

I remember gosms had this really cool backup and restore feature from sd card back when i used to use it, maybe give that a shot? :good:

Zmore is the man. Worked like a charm. Hopefully SMS Backup + adds MMS support soon.

[Q] Problem with contacts backup restore in 2.1

Before upgrading to 2.1, I used the backup and restore app to backup all contacts.
After upgrading, I chose restore. The process ran smoothly from the beginning, but stayed for a long while at 93%, and then reported "Finished". Checked my phonebook - no contacts.
I have been doing regular backups, so I tried using an older backup file. Same problem - the app does not pass 93%. No contacts.
Does anyone have the same problem? Know how to solve it?
I also have backups as vcard and SE sync, but those do not seem to backup everything.
I was about to post when I found this thread.
Before moving on to 2.1, I would like to backup my messages, contacts, etc. Could anyone of you suggest an application which *WORKED* while moving to 2.1? Which app you used and was the restore done correctly using it?
Thanks in advance.
all msges were deleted, but i got all my contacts back trough gmail, i allways sync it with that, its fast and easy, thanks to that option i recovered my contacts over 20x allready the last months
Actually my gmail has around 1000s of contacts which I dont want to move to my phone. So I would like to use a backup app. Anyone who used a backup app successfully, please suggest.
Thanks.
Testing as we speak...
* SE sync: Too unstable. Some contacts are duplicated, some contacts are not duplicated but their data entries are (2x same phone number etc). Does not treat addresses or middle names well.
* Gmail: You can create groups and sync only those groups (or one group) that you need on your phone. However, with 1.6 I was not able to sync 2-way with gmail. Updates on gmail account would not update on the phone. Also does not treat first name/surname well.
* Standard backup and restore app: Well, as mentioned above... Restore of contacts does not work in my case!
* Export contacts to vcard or similar (from contacts app -> choose backup): Quickest and most accurate so far. Does not maintain links to facebook, twitter, possibly not contact images. But otherwise the most reliable service in my case.

Never had this problem with 1.6, I used to make updates to my contacts and calendar items on my gmail account and it would instantly update on my phone and vice versa.

Same here. Always worked a treat for me.
The only issue I have is when I create a contact on my phone, it doesn't create it into one of my sync'd groups which then gets removed. I have to then go into gmail to assign it to a group which will then sync back.
Still, Gmail is by far the best thing to use to sort contacts!
Still it wont save my messages. Therefore I want to know if anyone tried a backup app.
Lots of people have had problems with Gmail contact sync working only one way. Could have something to do with combining with SE sync.
Gmail contact sync seems to work perfectly on 2.1 (after 3 hours...)
The-Lord: The built-in backup and restore app had no problems with restoring 7 months of text messages. If you want to be sure you don't loose contents, you could back up your texts to Gmail first, using the free app SMSBackup.
If you need to backup and restore your contacts use MyPhoneExplorer.
It now supports Android and runs over WiFi.
SOLVED
I had this same problem, restore the contacts as normal, if you have favourites check the favourites folder in phone-book or go to text messages and press new message, find or type a contact you have, press on the contact open it and save it this will refresh the phone-book list, exit the application, turn on and off phone all contacts should reappear. BAM Saved. Not easy but worked for me.

Did you do this through the stock messaging app? and when u look up the contact in messaging, u say click on it and open it, but do u mean just open it up to where its a new message? and then save the message? thanks for the help ahead of time though.

Prior to upgrading to Nordic, I used MYBACKUP PRO to backup contacts, msgs and call log etc. After completing the upgrade I did a restore and everything was restored apart from my Contacs. I kept trying but with no luck. After an hour or so I tried again and the contacts were restored. I think you have to leave the phone to settle down prior to doing a restore. Hope this is of some help

Solved. Installed 2.1 again and all was fine. also solved laggy issue.
Resolved Issue! Here is HOW!
To backup your contacts before upgrading to 2.1 Nordic, you need to save them from the phonebook app to the memory card BEFORE upgrading.
I had to downgrade my phone to 1.6, run the restore, save them to memory card, then re-upgrade to 2.1 nordic and import them from memory card and it worked very will.
I had to do this 2 times for both mind and my wife's x10 phones!
The restore function does work fine in 2.1 after importing from memory card. I believe the records that are saved for the contacts are different from 1.6 to 2.1. there may be an additional field that we don't know about.
So word to Caution: SAVE TO MEMORY CARD BEFORE upgrading to 2.1.
Cellphone Carrier: Rogers Wireless
Happy X10ing
The restore of the contacts DID work. It just restored to our google account. If you try to add new contacts you'll be notice that the phonebook wil ask you where to add, your phonebook or your google account. You could change the phonebook content by clicking three man pics at the top left of your phonebook. Hope this will help.

[Q] Tethering, setting homepage, phone contacts back up

Hi guys. My phone is Samsung Galaxy Ace, firmware Android 2.3.6, rooted
3 questions:
1. I've been able to surf the web using my laptop thru my phone's tethering capability. Will my carrier know about it and charge me for it?
2. When I tap the 'Internet' app, the default homepage is www.google.com.xx (xx represents my country). How do I make it www.google.com ?
3. I always use Kies to back up my phone's contacts. It saves all contacts in a .spb file (samsung phonebook?). Is there a way to send all contacts to my gmail account so I won't have to use Kies?
Thanks so much!
Hi, answer first two questions I dont know, but contats may be - you must synchronise your contacts with google account - in contacts - press menu, account, enable synchronisation
I am using export to SD.

I assume if you exceed your data cap, which is easier to do on a laptop, then yes. For browsing, perhaps they can detect desktop useragent strings if they examine their connection logs, but this would depend on your carrier. Opera on the desktop can tweak useragent strings if I remember correctly, to mask desktop browser usage.

Settings > Set home page should do it but not sure if google do some redirection magic, at which you may need to delete your cookies.

What is wrong with google contacts sync? I never have to backup contacts as that just works with my google account. I do have to backup SMS messages, and the excellent SMS backup and restore by Ritesh Sahu archives them to XML and emails me that daily, very handy!
iandol, nothing wrong with google contacts sync.
I don't need the email addresses of my friends in my gmail account to be copied to my phone. What I'm asking for is this: All contacts on my phone will be uploaded to my gmail account, so that if I ever reset my phone, all I need to do is access my gmail account through my phone, and download the contacts. As opposed to plugging my phone to my laptop, opening Kies, and 'import' the contact file (.spb), and 'save to device (my phone)'.
Hope I'm clear.
Thanks!
Yes. When I switch ROMs I never have to back up my contacts (many with *only* phone numbers), I just associate my phone with my google account and it automagically syncs all my contacts after a few minutes of first booting that fresh ROM. What it doesn't back up is my call log, my sms messages and apn settings, which is why I use other programs for that. *And* although Market tries to reinstall the apps I installed I much prefer to backup apps+data using Titanium Backup, this means I get my phone back exactly as I want it with minimum fuss!

But when I open my gmail (using a laptop), I don't see my phone's contacts (my friends' cell numbers) anywhere in my gmail. Where is it located?

If you don't have data plan at you carrier you will be charged for used MB. And your carrier shouldn't be worried how you spent your MB.

If your sync is on and contacts are sync with gmail it will be located under Gmail sign > click mail and switch to contacts.

Well , This Method works for sure for any messaging app...
Choose and install any Backup & Restore App from Google Play.
Click on Backup to Backup your SMSes.
The progress bar while backing up your messages will show how many SMSes you have (to be backed up) xD
That way you get to know how many SMSes you have sent and received
I use --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&feature=search_result

It will back ALL your messages each time you use it. Not sure if you can backup your new incoming messages only without backing everything up again with this app.
Each time you backup your messages with this app , it will be independent of the previous backup. Each time it ONLY depends on the messages you currently have (not the deleted ones)
If you want that only your new messages get backed up , I have one more app for you. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en
This backups all your messages to your Gmail account.
But the thing is that if you have backed up a message on Gmail through this app , and if you delete it on your phone , the message will stay in Gmail.
That means , that this app backs up your messages and NOT syncs messages.
With this app if you back up on Monday you will back up 20 messages and not everything unlike the previous app.

For SMS I use SMS backup and restore. I load the XML file on dropbox and can download it to the new device and restore it through the app. No recommendation for call logs as I don't really care too much about those (i rarely make/receive calls that aren't from my wife). No root required.

Question Restore SMS and call history without resetting to get setup wizard

I'm migrating from a Galaxy Note 9 to Pixel 6. When I initially set up the Pixel I forgot to restore SMS and call history from my Google backup taken on the Note 9. Is there any way I can restore this data, or even copy the data over? I've tried Samsung Smart Switch which didn't want to do anything.
I don't want to reset the Pixel to get the setup wizard again as I spent hours installing and configuring apps.
TIA!

be aware that if you where using RCS messaging (advanced chat features in Google Messages) its probably that the backup/restore won't work with this app.

I use RCS and haven't noticed any issues.
I utilize RCS as well, SMS Backup and Restore works fine without interference.
Amazing thing is I back it up to Google Drive and set a reoccurring schedule.
Hands down, recommend it everywhere.
