Yes, a noob (very cool noob video!) with first question. Yes I searched - be gentle with me
Brand new I717. Never had an ATT SIM in it. Took it out of the box, network unlocked it, put a USA Tmobile SIM in it, and rooted it. Nothing else done yet. Works fine, with expected lack of 3G/4G data. To get that I have to flash a modem - Blaze or similar. This much I know. Questions:
1. I travel a lot. Mostly UK, Iceland, New Zealand. Are there any gotchas with using a custom modem overseas? Which is the best all-rounder for good data performance in USA and overseas?
2. For avoidance of doubt, is there any dependency between ROM and modem? Can I flash a custom ICS ROM e.g. Goldie and worry about modem later? Are they entirely independent? (ok that qualifies as a real noob question lol)
Thanks!
Mike
Roms and modems are independent.
I suggest your next step is to Odin flash CWM recovery.
When traveling overseas most carriers use the same frequencies as AT&T. US T-mobile is pretty unusual with their dual band set up.
So in the US follow the T-mobile suggested modem (blaze) and keep the UCLF5 modem and blaze modem on your sd card. Then you can flash either one depending on the carrier you use.
Have CWM and a few modems in cwm zip format so you don't need a pc.
Many thanks ranger; Seraphim ICS & Blaze modem installed and working and looking like Android is supposed to. Had to go in and manually select carrier before phone would show a signal, but then it came up 4G right away.
Thanks again!
Mike
You might look for the local carrier in the countries you intend to visit now and take a screen shot of the local carrier's APN settings.
Example for Canadian carrier:

That way when you get your sim you can input the APN info and get right to business.
Its easy. Just google for example "vodafone iceland apn settings".

As a relative newbie, I have a question. I have flashed a Rodgers modem, onto my ATT note. In an attempt to improve the GPS function. The note is rooted, and running Flapjaxx's latest Rom UCLF6. Now I appear to be having voice issues. If I try to re-flash another modem, how do I go about removing the Rodgers modem? And which modem works the best?
Thanks
Are you a Rogers subscriber?
No? Then UCLF6, the stock modem is best for at&t. Just get the zip file and put it in your sd card. Boot into recovery and flash it. The flash process will write over the top of the Rogers modem. Reboot, give the phone a few minutes to settle in.

if i understand once you flash another modem on top, it will do away with your last modem no need to remove old modem you had...which modem? That depends on the location.
edit: sorry ranger didn't see you posting, you slip in under my radar...LOL
I just tried something for you.
Just reflash the Flapjaxxx rom and it will overwrite your modem. You only need to wipe the cache when in recovery before you flash.
To fix your GPS issues Flapjaxxx includes a gps fix in his tools. See your settings menu:

Haha Mr. Joe -- I can't believe we were typing the exact same thing at the exact same time!
How do you keep your phone dry? You have to be in that gorgeous pool today with the wife or GF.
ATT Note
Thanks folks, I appreciate it.
You are welcome.
Please edit your title to say [solved].
See you again?

I'm trying to unlock my I717R to put in an LTE Data SIM from Bell Mobility.
I bought the SIM today and tried inserting it. I've expected to see something like a window asking me for an unlock code.
However, I did not see anything. The phone does not pick up any network, however it sees all three available in 'Network operators' page - Rogers, Telus, and Bell.
Trying to make a call, I see 'Mobile network not available'.
I wonder how the heck I'm supposed to enter the SIM unlock code when I buy it??
My phone is i717R, radio is I717RUXLF4, firmware is CM9 Release.
Oh and BTW the SIM works OK - I've inserted in into my wife's Nexus S (unlocked), and got signal, data, and everything. Even the calls work OK however they shouldn't, but that's a different story.
HEEEELP!
The request to input unlock code only will happen with a stock gb or ics rom. You have to return to stock.
You don't have to unroot or remove CWM, you just need stock rom and modem.

Thank you Sir, you've just made my day! I was suspecting that previous owner (bought mine on Craigslist) has exhausted unlocking attempts. Paranoia is a killer, mark my word...
One more question - does it make any sense after unlocking to change radio from Rogers to Bell?
Rogers and Bell use the same frequencies, and those match at&t. So no, you can use the stock modem. You just need to input the Bell APN settings after unlocking.

Reverted to stock, unlocked, restored CM9, installed Bell SIM, APN installed by itself.
However, what I see is H in signal icon, and HSPA:11 in phone status. LTE is permitted in settings. What's wrong now?
are you in an LTE network area? I'm not.

I believe I am, Toronto, Yonge & Steeles, Bell's map shows solid LTE coverage...
Well, feel free to flash a different modem and be ready to input the Bell APN settings.

As the title states, I bought an AT&T S5 for my wife for christmas. She likes some of the stock apps that tmobile offers and I was wondering if i could just install the tmobile rom on the AT&T phone with minimal risk.
Thanks for the help.

Usually people buy the t-mobile S5 to use on at&t. You could always just download a Tmo rom and pull the apks from the zip.
As for flashing a Tmo rom not to sure. Barely learned tmo S5 supports international roms.
I want to do the same thing.
I have restored 900A to old AT&T stock firmware with odin, towelroot then worked.
What is my next step now?
I want T-Mobile softcard and T-mobile call-over-wifi to work and also simply removing all the AT&T default apps.
So I want my phone to be like it came from from T-Mobile store.
A at&t and t-mobile S5 phone should be in hardware the same?
Quote:
Important Note: You may only download and install the specified stock firmware according to your Galaxy S5 phone model number. As you may not know, there are numerous versions of the Galaxy S5 in each and every countries. Each of these Galaxy S5 versions uses different firmware build, flashing a non-specified stock firmware to other Galaxy S5 variants may result into bricks. Meaning it will also causes damage to your phone and you cannot recover it by your own.
Solved my issue, not the overall thread, sorry for the confusion. (please delete this post, I can't do it from Tapatalk)

Please do tell what solution you came up with! I'm in the same predicament. I would love a Tmobile rom that supports wifi calling on my att s5 900a.

Another option, but beware, homie in the thread said Wifi Calling not working for him
Btw I decided against trying this out for now, and am just using Hangouts as a wifi calling solution

If you're on ATT, it should update, but if it's not I wonder if something is wrong from ATT's side. ATT is being extra difficult about phones that aren't their IMEI, so your device is somewhat more-valuable if it's truly an ATT IMEI.
You cannot get ATT ROMs online, because ATT refuses to release them. If you still want to update, you can Frankenstein your phone (instructions are on this forum) to US998, and then update to whichever version you want. You could also root the phone along the way, if desired. However, you cannot get back to an ATT ROM if you do this. The phone should work fine as US998 ROM on the ATT (and many other networks)... so it should remain functional.
thank you very much.

also the project treble compatibility, does it come with oreo?
No treble that I ever saw. There was some effort but it didn't seem to pan out. There may be custom roms with it, but I stayed to stock-based because you will need VOLTE/VOWIFI at some point, which custom ROMs don't have.
Ok thanks
Hi!
I'm from Peru, about three months ago I bought an S22+ 256gb version through a reseller here in my country (official Samung store only sells the 128gb vairant). Since I was not receiving the Android 13 update I decided to check if I could do it manually, after following some tutorials I ended up in this deadspot, turns out my phone has this weird CSC code that I can't find anywhere else on the internet.

I don't know if it's necessary, but I'll provide some info about my phone when i received it:
It had AT&T stuff inside the box, as well as an sticker on the back of the box, at first i thought it was a locked phone, but it didn't had any proprietary apps. Everything was sealed, phone was clearly new.
While browsing the web, i found this page that let's you check if your phone IMEI was blacklisted, I cheked mine and it has two IMEI, one is blacklisted and one is not. I can use it to make and receive calls as well as use the LTE with my local service provider.
I'm fairly new to this whole "unlocked phone" thing, so my question is... Did I screwed myself up by buying an AT&T stolen/contrabanded phone from the reseller?, or is there a way to update my phone to Android 13 manually without risking bricking it forever.
If some of you guys can help me figure this out, that would be amazing, thanks!
You have a US model. I think the applied CSC is T-mobile but I'm not sure. You can use this tool: https://samfw.com/blog/samfw-frp-tool-1-0-remove-samsung-frp-one-click Under adb commands get a list of CSCs, see if the one you want is there. Then you can go back to the tool's main screen and change your CSC. Takes 10 seconds + a reboot, no data loss. Worked for me both on my Tab S8+ and S22+. Since your CSC is not part of the OXM package I'm not really familiar with the options you'll get on the list. I think XAA is good, it's listed online as USA unbranded. But I'm not from the US so I'm not sure what will have the fastest updates.
Edit: I just saw you have one IMEI blacklisted. Yeah it's probably a bit shady... Not sure if it had any further consequences.
