Disable the Capacitive Buttons and Put on screen. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just got the S3, its a great phone apart from one design failure in my eyes, the two capacitive buttons are to close to the edge of the phone making then a pain in the ass. they keep being triggered just by holding the phone in landscape. is there any way to disable these 2 buttons indefinitely and relocate them on-screen? i saw some one with a version of jelly bean running on the s3 which was ported over, they had the buttons on screen.
Please help me guys

i agree... i tried to watch a movie on youtube today and 3 times i hit the back button... i gave up after that

Screen not respond. stuck on lockscreen

Well guys I got my HTC Flyer thru a trade a few weeks back and it worked well and I absolutely loved the Flyer until 2 days ago. I was using it to chat with my ex gf on GTalk and I locked it, put it down and we talked on the phone then. And like 2 hours later, I went to turn the Flyer on and the touch screen wouldn't respond. The animations and everything works fine. But when I touch the screen, nothing. I used then pen and still nothing. When I rotate the screen, it does rotate but the touch screen still won't respond. I tried to let the battery run out but its gonna take extremely long for the battery to die out when its on the lock screen/standby mode. Any help guys? I really like this tablet and also its rooted and running the LeeDroid Honeycomb Sense 3.0 rom . Thanks guys

Capacitive buttons response

Right, the reason I have started this thread is, I see some discomfort using Back capacitive button. I am not complaining that buttons don't respond to touch, they do. All 3 of them.
Let me give you an example: I am playing with the phone, doing something on the screen. After, let's say few minutes, I want to go back, so I touch Back button, but it does not respond. I press few more times and eventually it registers. Some people would say "hit and miss" or "there is an issue with capacitive buttons". I say no, because I am touching it there, where I supposed to, also once it start registering, every time I press it, it registers (I have haptic feedback on, so I know it works). I have problems only, when I am not touching capacitive buttons for some time.
I hope I explained this well. I think this is, what in some reviews has been described as "hit and miss" or "capacitive buttons not register". Do you have the same problem? If yes, why is that happening? Is it software or hardware?
I don't have this problem because I realised that the most sensitive and best working area
for left/right button isactually in the inside space rather than exactly on those little points.
So once I press slightly to the middle, it works. It requires also a little longer press.
Ok, I will try that.
I do agree on the buttons. Probably the only thing to get used to, but one you do, no phone like it period! This is sick an amazing phone it is rediculous
The back button on my phone @ left corner is actually the best out of the three. and maybe I feel the same way about the middle "HOME" button where it registers little higher than the other two. actually I have hit it few times accidentally while I was trying to push the space bar on keyboard.
But every time I felt the haptic feedback, button worked.
I am happy with the performance of the buttons. It seems like they work like the power and eject buttons on the PS3. They respond when you remove your finger.

The only thing I have to get used to...
Almost no extra hits anymore...
One touch is most of the times correct registered :-(

Right, so by looks of it, there is no issue. Something I have to get used to. Thanks a lot guys. I also hope it will help future buyers as well.
I have not had any problems with the capacitive buttons so far and tbh i prefer them to hardware buttons like on the arc/play etc
No problems here. They are better than the one's on a Samsung galaxy s2.
I used to have a Nexus One and the buttons are similar to that, you sort of have to roll/slide your finger upwards on the button ever so slightly.
I barely notice it but I know what you mean.
I find that if you aim just slightly to the middle of the screen rather than on the dots then it works great

How can you be serious? I have both, and as perfect as the Xperia S is as an upgrade, its capacitive buttons are not as sharp and fool proof..that's my only gripe ...
Example situation of problem:
Right after finishing recording a decent length FullHD video, pressing home or back needs to be done repeatedly to register (MOST of the time).
Not a deal breaker, but I so hope this is software related..
I have the same issue but after one day of owning this phone im learning where to press to get a response first time

Well I started off doing the "pressing above the dots" thing, until I noticed you could also swipe them (I swipe from the transparent bar up)....now I'm used to swiping them and never have any problem
I'm liking the swiping method, its impossible to miss and well..it's kinda fun for some reason

Yeah, that works very well. Thanks.
I am just glad we have sorted it out and it turned out it is not a software or hardware issue. After reading some advises, my phone cooperates with me much better.

[Q] Disable Home Button Unlock?

OK, so I've had this phone for just a few days now, love it aside from the physical home button. Not a fan of it at all, but now I've found myself going to the unlock screen when I put the phone in my pocket. Can the home button to unlock screen be tuned off? I just want the "power button" to unlock the screen.
Please help as this is driving my wife and I nuts with these!!!
Thanks in advance!
Hey,
Sorry, but it's a mystery, how you can power on your screen with home button.
You should also have trouble with the power button also, as it's on the side.
Either you wear very tight pants, or your pockets are very narrow ;-)
Side button is not a problem as I have had a Captivate and Skyrocket before, but my big mitts get in the way! ... and I have having problems with putting it in cargo short pockets, lol.
Nobody made an app or anything to take this button out of commision while screen is turned off?

I've seen this exact issue with both my old SGS2 and my new SG Note 2.
For me at least, it looks like this only happens with 3rd party lock screen apps. Most have a built-in workaround that basically just sets that locker to the default launcher so that when you press the Home key at any point, it locks the screen. This keeps it from unlocking, but also makes the home key virtually pointless and disallows you from using any 3rd party launcher.
So right now I'm stuck having to use the stock locker app, since I'd much rather use my Nova Launcher and not risk butt-dialing people all the time...
Anyone heard any solutions for this issue yet?

[Q] **SOLVED** Verizon GS4 crash/reboot problem

Hello XDA-ers!
Having a problem with my Verizon GS4 rooted phone not staying in the "download mode". In fact, it won't stay on for more than 2 seconds before it goes black and unresponsive. Removing/reinstalling the battery ALONE gets the phone to try to start up.
Before the crash, it was running. Thrashing to Pandora, got out of car, unplugged AUX, looked to check the time, phone was out cold. It had a full charge.
4.4.2
Verizon
towelroot/SafeStrap 3.72
Read somewhere it could be a battery problem, so I got a new Rayovac one from a local store. Nothing new happens.
Tried cleaning the insides of the phone for a possible stuck power switch problem. Same problem. Clean as a whistle inside.
Phone will not recognize charger or PC or Mac. Frustration increases.
How do I get my phone to stay in Download Mode or stay on for more than 2 seconds? Is this hardware related?
Hi,
It certainly sounds like a stuck power button to me. Just cleaning inside might not solve it either.
For other ideas though , I'll have your thread moved to your device section, here...

While the phone was apart, I was able to click the buttons. I'm taking it apart again right now just to make sure.
Edit: took phone apart. everything was clean. all buttons depressed (like me) and returned to normal position. phone is still doing the same thing. Will not stay on plugged in. Will not charge. Not recognized by Odin because it wont stay on long enough.
Switching to backup phone in the mean time.
Update! Solved!
After looking everywhere, I finally ran across a video explaining how to un-stick the power button. Even though the button clicks, that doesn't mean it is g2g. I ended up wacking the power button area of the phone on a table and with a hammer. Which one worked? I don't know. Finally unstuck and working properly. However, I'm now a proud owner of TWO backup phones (GS3 and Droid X).
Bottom line: GET AGGRESSIVE AND HIT THE POWER BUTTON. Caution as to not to crack your screen.
Thanks for the confirmation on the power button diagnosis!

There are a couple of these videos out there about the wacking method. Sadly, I'm a fresh user and cannot link you to any videos.
Do a YouTube search for "galaxy s4 stuck power button". It will lead you to a how to video or two that you want. It was a firm wack IMO since I got pretty upset after the first two soft wacks. Other videos show how to do less abusive methods, but I got frustrated after already taking apart and manipulating the button.
Good luck!

Weird Touch Screen issue. Help?

Hello friends. Need your advice on this.
Since 3rd April.
The bottom half of the screen starts pressing buttons on its own.
The apps open on their own
The back, home and recents button keep pressing on their own.
Then I've got to, with much difficulty, restart the phone and it works fine for a few hours then REPEAT...
* The phone has never fallen down or gotten wet ever.
Only 9 days old.
Thanks
