Anybody know how to make a transparant status bar for ICS?

My friend updated her SGS2 to the official ICS build (4.0.3 I think) from Samsung and now she hasn't got a battery status icon in the status bar - is this intentional from Samsung or is it a bug?
I know that you can install an app that puts a notification displaying the battery status in the status bar, but that doesn't seem like a "proper" fix.
Anyone know how to get the battery icon in the status bar to show up?
