Samsung Update Help! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am currently on the original S3 firmware (no updates) and I am just wondering that if I get the latest update will it include the previous updates or must I get the previous updates first?

Yes, don't worry, as long as you accept the latest update over-the-air from the phone (or use an update recommended in KIES), you should get everything you need. It's all quite painless.

But I can't update via kies or ota, I was going to use odin, will that still do the trick?

I'm sure it should be fine, but I'm not too familiar with any special precautions necessary with odin.

If you want to use Odin first download a stock firmware from www.sammobile/firmware, pick the rom of your country and download it.
Extract it once from .rar to md5 file. This also contains Odin3 v3.0.4. Link UK unbranded http://www.hotfile.com/dl/162402398/abc9bdb/I9300XXBLFB_I9300OXABLFB_BTU.zip.html.
Readup a bit, it isn`t hard but there are a few things you must know:
1. Enable usb debugging on your phone
2. Go into downloadmode (volume down + power + menu all at the same time)
3. See if IDCOM light up yellow and in the left bottom window it says added when you connect your phone to the pc.
4. Unzip the downloaded file ONCE into a .tar or md5 file if you haven`t
5. Place that file in the PDA section.
6. Do not tick anything, only f.reset.time and autoreboot should be ticked.
7. Start
8. Rebooting automaticly.
Close Kies, also in windows task manager before flashing. Don`t use a pit file, is allready in the rom!
Good luck

You can also use the one click root tool to unroot.

Information from s15274n
When you want to go back to stock, you can go the development section and find a stock JFD ODIN/zip, but I always just use the ALT METHOD below. It's always worked well for me personally.
This method will give you a stock Froyo + Root (no further action needed).
*** ALT METHOD ***
STOCK JK2 WITH ROOT ALREADY ENABLED
This method can be used to return to stock if needed. It can also be used for someone who is stock and wants to get root. If you are using this to gain root, please pay attention to the very last step about wiping
I prefer to use the method above to root, and this to return to a stock rom.
You can follow ipeench's thread (CLICK HERE). Be sure you download the right zip for the 2.2 leak (it is not obvious to me in the post). This is the thread used in the video (see video below):
UPDATE: When you download the files from the link above for JK2+root, there is an older version of ODIN included in that zip. I would NOT use that version of ODIN. Please download this updated version (it has never caused an install hangup on me like some older ODIN version can do):
ODIN 3 V1.7
Below are some videos I took last night. They are NOT the best, but hopefully it helps. One thing that may sound confusing is when I show how to use ODIN, at the end I state that I'm going to show how to root... well, this version already has root, so no further action is needed for obtaining root (thanks Eugene)!
This is a video of me going to the leaked JK2 via ODIN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMSF-SumO3k
Here is another youtube video showing ODIN. It is flashing the JFD build (what the Vibrant originally shipped with):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnY7P14JSWQ
Here are the written steps you can follow if the video was not helpful:
I DID NOT INCLUDE THIS AT THE END OF THE VIDEO, BUT YOU MUST DO THE FOLLOWING:
Go into Recovery... Wipe user data & cache
then reboot
Now you can enjoy 2.2

odin is samsung's proprietary/internal software that can hard flash your device. odin may be used whether or not you have already rooted your device, and it will absolutely clear all your data in your internal sd card. to operate odin, you first need to obtain a rom flashable via odin (usually zipped in .tar file).
alternatively you can revert back to stock kernel/rom while you still have your device rooted. you can obtain a rom flashable via clockworkmod recovery (cwm), a bootloader software that can be installed on a rooted device, and just flash it. once you flashed your device back to stock rom, then you can unroot it so that your device is 100% back to stock.
all rom packages both odin flashable and cwm flashable have kernels, roms and modems in them.
look into sticky threads in this and development forums and you will be able to find detailed instructions on how to flash using either odin or cwm recovery. do some research and get yourself familiarized with the process. it's pretty simple as you've already flashed.
Go download ODIN and browse the forums for the files you will need. There is 512.pit file you will need and you need the JFD.tar file to enter into the PDA section of ODIN. Once ODIN is downloaded open, it's an exec. file. Once ODIN is open turn phone off. Plug USB cable that came with your phone into drive, hold down both Volume Down and Volume Up buttons and plug cable into phone. Display should say Download Mode in Yellow and have Android with a shovel. On your computer you should see in first box a Com Port open up either COM 3 or COM 4, doesn't matter. You should see some check boxes underneath the COM. Check the one for Repartition. Click the .PIT button and search for the 512.pit file you downloaded and click the PDA button and search for the JFD.tar file and click start. It will run through the process and when it's done you will be back to stock like you took the phone out of the box. Any questions and I can email you all the files and instructions.

How to flash to Stock ICS update??

Hey guys, new here (obviously). I'm also fairly new to flashing/rooting on Android in general.
I flashed my phone to one of the leaked ICS international versions (when I boot up my phone it says "Samsung Galaxy SII GT I9100" from Gingerbread. I did this a couple of days ago. There are a few problems main one being I can't use the phone app for my phone (ironic).
So since the ICS official version for the US AT&T phone came out, I was wondering.
How can I flash my phone to the stock ICS version? Any help would be great and I hope I did not post in the wrong section :\
Thanks so much in advance guys.
Download KIES, install the proper drivers, plug in your phone, update.
Although you probably messed up your phone flashing firmware for the wrong model....
BTW, you might want to at least make an attempt to read before making a thread. There is a thread already dedicated to upgrading your phone to the official AT&T Gingercream Sandwich update
At least pretend to look like you are genuinely interested. Or you know, follow the rules you agreed to upon signing up in the forums

Boot into download mode using the standard I777 method: with phone off, hold down vol+ & vol- while plugging in USB cable. Post back what the flash counter says.

I don't think the standard method is working. Just shows the battery on screen.
and in response to the kies reply; when I plug in the phone and sync it up with kies, kies says "Your device does not support firmware upgrade through kies" or something along those lines.
In response to the other guy, I'm terribly sorry, maybe you could help by posting a link to that thread? I tried looking around seeing if there was anything related to my issue and I couldn't find anything. Forgive my noob status?
Thanks guys.
I used the method that worked though. Held down power, vol down, and home..
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-i9100

looks like you need to read around and learn how to flash the secondary bootloader for UCKH7. It will change it back to the correct boot screen too. At least, that's what I think. I had to do it the other day after working on rooting the new LE5 stock.
Read the links in Creepy's signature.
To return your phone to I777 stock, flash the UCKH7 CL503881 stock binaries. The one-click downloader is the easiest. You will find the firmware in the Download Repository, link in my signature. This is the package that includes bootloaders and param.lfs.
Edit: I have been assuming you have the I777. This is true isn't it?
After you are at UCKH7 stock, you can use kies to update to stock ICS, or you can flash UCLE5 which is also in the Download Repository, at the bottom.
kk. I think what I'm gonna do is flash is completely back to stock gingerbread using one of his links and odin.
and plug it in through kies and see if that works to update it to ICS official.
Thanks guys! Sorry I caused such an uproar.
Thanks Creepy!! I will do just that
yes that is correct; I have the SGH-I777 At&t Samsung Galaxy S2.
It appears the one click exe that reverts my phone to stock software actually STOPS and "FAIL"s on the part where it's flashing the "cache."
My phone says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
Fortunately when I went download mode the top right corner says SGH-I777
instead of the international version.
I've tried the one-click several times and it still does not work. :\
Any advice?
Edit: Kies is not recognizing my phone ; "device not responding"
thanks again.
Make sure you have the USB Debugging mode turned off. It took me a few minutes to figure that out when I was trying to upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS via Kies earlier.
Not sure what's hanging it up. From your report, it appears that the secondary bootloader was successfully flashed. Do you recall what other steps completed before the fail?
You should be able to boot into recovery by holding vol+, vol- and pwr. Hold down until you enter recovery. Then wipe data/factory reset. Then try to flash the UCKH7 stock package without bootloaders. The link is in the return to the store guide linked in my signature. Or flash one of the stock plus root packages.
Hey thanks Creepy!
I really hate using the one-clickers, had no luck with 'em :|
I'd much rather use the blank Odin 1.85 exe I have that lets you fill in the files.
If I use that and the ---Return/Unbrick to Stock + Root: I777_UCKH7_OCD_Root_No_BL.7z (This contains the kernel, rooted system image, and modem.)--- download, what do I use for the bootloader slot or do I leave that empty?
thanks

That's a one-click downloader. If you want to flash the full package, there is a tar.md5 file in the Download Repository with everything in it, but it's all in one package, including the bootloaders, so you put it in the pda slot and it's the only file you flash.
In the Download Repository, there are also tars for Entropy512's packages which you can flash in Odin3. They are also one file tars and go in the pda slot. You can read about each one.
I'm not sure you need to flash the bootloaders again. I'd try to wipe data/factory reset and then flash a stock package without bootloaders first.
Applied the one-click with root Flash and now I'm back to gingerbread.
gonna see if I can get ICS working through kies..
looking good!!!
So my phone won't open.
I keep clicking the android but it keeps saying the google services framework has crashed.
and it won't connect to kies..
any ideas?

Since ur rooted why not just flash the rom in cwm? The official release is found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948

I guess you just drop that file onto the phone using file explorer and USB connection,
then go into recovery to update via cwm?

You can`t, you have to flash a stock rom with Odin and do a data/factory reset afterwards. Backup your files first to your pc.

Upload the update.zip for me to download and I will convert it to a CWM flashable ota and you wont lose root or recovery or need to reset to factory. You will find the ota update.zip in '/cache/fota'. Which stock ROM are you currently on? I have a BLG6 to BLG8 in this thread LINK

How to uninstall
This is by no means an extensive guide for unrooting, but if you want to sell or warranty your device, I advise the following procedure:
- Use Triangle Away to reset the flash counters, and pull the battery immediately after rebooting starts
- Boot into recovery and perform a wipe, and pull the battery immediately after rebooting starts
- Go to SamMobile and get the stock firmware for your region
- Flash that stock firmware on your device
- Let Android boot, go through device setup (without doing any logins) until Android is fully usable again
- Reboot
- Wait at least 10 minutes
- Check Settings->About device->Status and make sure Device status is not "Modified"
- Perform another factory reset
- Boot into download mode and make sure the flash counter and system status are all set to official

Hi,
I recently bought a second hand GS3. It was rooted when i bought it but now that I'd like to update it via Kies i want unroot it.
I have tried following your steps and many others for that matter.
the programs i have downloaded so far are
-Triangle Away
- Odin
- 2 seperate stock firmwares from http://samsung-updates.com/ for my region (ireland)
- 7 zip
I am still stuck though
I Open the firmware zip, to reveal two files, a .tar.md5 file and a .dll file
From here i believe i should be able to open the md5 file on Odin, however trying to open this file as a pda in Odin doesn't work because Odin can't even seem to recognise that the file even exists.
I have tried extracting the md5 file, this leaves 5 img files, i then extracted them using a program i found on xda called sgs2toext4
At this point i am really lost as to what I am doing wrong. I know i need to flash the rom i've downloaded but how do i get odin to recognise the file?
I am a pretty serious noob in need of some pretty serious help.
To flash with ODIN...

The .tar.md5 file and the .dll file should be together to avoid a freak mishap (but that is just me being paranoid), don't extract/unzip/f-up anything beyond that point... go to odin, click on PDA and select the .tar.md5 file you got, THAT is the firmware file, after that, click start and let it do it's job, BTW, make sure the only TICKED options are Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time, everything else will brick the device if you don't know what you're doing (which you probably don't anyway, so don't try anything)
Be aware you need the drivers that COME WITH KIES to make ODIN able to recognize your device (if it does, you'll see an "Added!!" message in the left message box of ODIN and a "COM3/4" yellow rectangle light up in the top left square of the upper row
If you need more help reply to this and i'll help you... but you can also watch some tutorial vids on youtube or something, i'm pretty sure somebody here already did one to avoid long posts

You mean like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461203 and check this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46271485&postcount=47 for the root which uses TWRP recovery and it works pretty good.
But keep in the the "melius.tar" file is for the mega 6.3 phone and the "crater.tar" file is for the mega 5.8 phone and these files are odin flashable and will need odin 3.07 which i use and works well, but when you load up the tar file in the PDA window of odin it will take a bit for it to show up in that window as it looks like odin is not responding..but it is just preparing the file which is quite large .
TY For the good information. Just curious if those stock ROM/Kernel will be okay to flash even tho I have a t-mobile sim card installed. And do they have the bloatware removed, and will my voicemail/texting still function properly?
Also, when i flash the new .tar file does that root the phone also, or should i root it first? If so could you post the link for rooting? Your help has been greatly appreciated

TWRP gives you the option to root your device if it isn't rooted so flash the tar file first and the rest will take care of itself.
Good luck
Sent from my GT-I9152 using Tapatalk 4
No do not root it first because when you flash the stock rom it will replace what you rooted with the stock recovery without root. And the t-mobile sim card should work i think..but these are stock roms for the their respective carriers and they all have bloatware..i just not sure on how much each different rom has for bloatware, i use the BWA rom which is for sasktel in my area.
1. Download odin v 3.07 as v 3.09 i don't really like using.
2. Unzip odin 3.07 to a spot on your pc that you can find it easy and open the odin program.
3. Choose which stock rom you want to flash but make sure to unzip the rom so that you get the .tar.md5 file inside and you don't need that .dll file.
4. Now with odin open click on the PDA button and locate were you have the rom's .tar.md5 file and click on so it shows up in the File name window and click on the open button, and give it time for odin to load the file as it will take a bit and when done it will show the file in the PDA window.
5. Make sure only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" is checked and the rest of the boxes don't need to be checked.
6. Now that odin is ready to flash, you have to get your phone into Download Mode..by first have the phone powered off and then hold the vol-down + power button at the same time and it should vibrate and then a warning screen should appear and release the buttons and then push on the vol-up button and you are now in download mode.
7. Now connect your phone to your pc and with odin still open from before you should see in the first ID:COM window light in blue and show something like 0:{COM4} in it..this means your device is connected and ready for flashing..make sure all other settings like described earlier in this post is set in odin.
8. Now you are ready to flash the rom and click on the start button and it will begin flashing and will take a bit to do and once done your phone will reboot and then you can unplug your phone from your pc and let the rom load as this will take a while also..and once it starts you can fill in the info you need when your first start a new rom..and you can now close odin.
Now that part is done..on to flashing TWRP recovery.
1. Open odin again and follow the procedure above in this post like how you did the rom to flash the TWRP recovery .tar file, but make sure that the Melius.tar file is for the mega 6.3 phone and the Crater.tar file is for the mega 5.8 phone from that link in my earlier post, and use the right .tar file according to what phone you have the mega 6.3 or the mega 5.8..BUT you change one setting only "Uncheck" the "Auto Reboot" as you don't want your phone to reboot after it is done flashing and the rest is all the same settings, like only have the "F. Reset Time" box checked and all the rest not checked.
2. Now put your phone into Download Mode again like describe earlier in this post.
3. Connect your device to the pc and make sure the ID:COM window lights up with your device id in it.
4. Double check that you have the right file and settings are what they are suppose to be and click on the start button and odin will begin flashing and will be done very quick and the bigger window above the ID:COM window will light up and say reset or pass and flashing is done.
5. Now unplug your phone from the pc and you will still be in the Download Mode which is okay.
6. Now you want to go back into the TWRP recovery right after your phone boots other wise it will not work, while still in the Download Mode hold the vol-up + power button until the phone shuts down and then quickly release the buttons and the then re-push on the vol-up + power button right away again and phone should vibrate and when you see the mega splash screen and in the top left corner of the screen in blue saying Recovery Booting.....and release the buttons and you should now be going into the TWRP recovery.
7. Once in the TWRP recovery and give it a few seconds tap on the reboot button and then it will give some selections and tap on recovery and it will then say the device is not rooted and it will ask if you want to root it with Superuser and you just slide that big round button icon across the screen and it will reboot into TWRP recovery and your phone will now be rooted.
8. Now you can leave TWRP recovery by tapping the reboot button and then tapping the system button and your phone will reboot and go into the rom.
9. Once you get back into your rom at some point it will ask to update the Superuser binaries and you will have a selection of PLAY or TWRP to update these Superuser binaries and choose the PLAY button and tap on it and it will take you to the Google play store (but make sure to have a google account otherwise you cannot get to the google play store) and you can then tap the update button and it update the Superuser binaries for you and after that is updated your are rooted and full Superuser permission..and that's it you are good to go and have fun with your rooted phone...and hope this info has helped you out.
Thank you VERY much for the detailed help, it is EXACTLY what i needed. As for the ROM/KERNEL is there a t-mobile mega 6.3 stock available to flash? Or will the link you posted above work fine for me and i just freeze the unnecessary bloatware?

Unfortunately not as the links in the first post are all Canadian roms and will work on your i527m mega..all i can suggest is just flash some of the roms and test them with your t-mobile sim card and see how it works as i am not sure on this part and you should be able to freeze or disable apps i am thinking..i will take a look and see if there is a t-mobile rom but i am not sure on it at this time. :good:
On the above rom/kernel link, if i dl the rom does it contain the kernel? Or do i have to dl both files and flash them both? Also do I need a SIM card in the phone to flash and root?

The rom contains the kernel also..so you do not have to download the kernel, and you don't need a sim card in to flash the phone.

THANKS!! Everything went off without a hitch, i am rooted and running the firmware. I have not received my t-mobile micro sim yet, but all my research points to the fact that i wont be able to use the US gsm networks? Is this true for my I527m model? If so is there a way to flash the US radio frequencies to my phone to get the LTE? or some other way i have yet to find? Thanks again for all your help.!!

Any news...? More info.
Did @ShinySide peg this one right on the nose???
This does sound like a signature verification issue from what has been discribebed, so definitely re-check firmwares for compatibility...
Of course Compatible Firmware is a must have ... ....
But: Just in case thats not it and your still having an issue? I'm curious:
1.) How are your bootloader and modem are packaged?
(ie.. in a single file with the system firmware or separately ie.. "bootloader.tar.md5"???
2.) In what format is the file(s)?
(ie.. Are they .tar.md5 / .tar / or .zip converted to .tar for use with Odin?)
3.) Are you saying that your'r flashing them separately or just selecting them all at the same time in Odin? (Are you using. Multiple appropriate check boxes? ie.. "AP", "BL"???)
4.) Also, what Version of Odin are you using??
4.) Of course you verified your PC USB drivers,
5.) Connected USB and selected "Connect as media device",
6.) Switched on "USB debugging mode" in "developer options",
7.) Have you cleared the old PS Security ID signatures...??
8.) Can your PC see the phone on USB prior to powering Download mode?
9.) Check the cable. Many pooeople report issues with the stock 3.0 cable, try a genuine Samsung 2.0 cable.. I had this issue, the problem was always intermittent / hit and miss, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't, I would get half way then drop.. Using an official Samsung 2.0 cable fixed my issus on more then one occasion..

4) i startedd using odin 3.10 then tried 3.09 went all the way to odin 1. something cant rmr the number tried all
and yes i verified my usb drivers many times
5 tried connecting phone as media device first also tried usb 3.0 mode
6 usb debugging mode on my phone was the first thing i did when i got the phone lol but yes i went back and made sure it was selected in the process just to be sure
7) i dont know how or know what old ps security signatures are a little help with that please?
