GPS acting funny - Motorola Droid RAZR

Has anyone else noticed a difference in their GPS since upgrading to ICS? Restarting the phone seems to help sometimes. Sometimes i have to wait in Google maps for a couple of minutes to get a lock.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app

I used to get a lock in my house in seconds on GB. Now it does take a little longer inside, but outside it is still just as fast. Not sure what changed, but something is a little different.

yes the gps is not as good as GB

i definitely have significantly worse GPS after ICS. it used to take seconds to catch on, now it takes minutes. honestly, it's almost unacceptabe

Same thing for me. In fact, last week it took me 15 minutes to get a lock. It's a bit ridiculous.

Install the application gps test, and update your agps from there.

I use waze and have to open gps test before waze inorder to get a lock.

In my case, through all the phones I have used, more ram freed meant faster lock on the GPS signal.
With Droid Charge especially, I closed out unused apps and the phone would lock almost instantly.
That's why it seems like the reboot of the phone often gets the GPS signal locked faster.
Next time clear out any unused programs and you should be able to get a lock faster.

GPS is definitely worse than it was on GB. But I noticed the problems only with some apps. Very mysterious.

**** for me too.

I looks like it needs less battery now.. maybe they decreased signal strength!?

After using "gps status" from play store and "gps fix", where you can set the server according to your location, gps locks almost instantly.

GPS lock was quicker using .214 than with .211. Now I'm on .215 and its a slow lock again. I'm going to bee making the switch back to .214 for this reason and also because .214 seemed to handle the 3g/4g hand off better.

Sort of related to the question posed, has anyone had problems using the navigator? As in it repeats the same wording for every direction it gives you on a trip?

I've actually experienced the opposite issue. I'm heading back to .211 now. .214 would take about 5-10 minutes to lock and then would be off by a couple hundred yards for the remainder of the time. I guess I'll try the gps fix app too... That takes me back when I had to use wifi fix for .211. I'm getting pretty tired of having to download apps to make my phone work properly on a stock build

I have the same problem with voice navigation. I just ended up turning voice navigation of. I'd love to find out if there is a fix for this. I also have very slow lock on position after the update to ice cream.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app

The slow gps lock is it every time you want to use gps or is it just the first time after upgrading?
If first time then it's normal. If everytime, then i suggest you update agps. So far the easiest way it's to do it via free app gps test..
I refreshed my agps and now i get fast satellite lock on ics.. And i do so everytime i travel to a place that exceeds 50km..

I was having the same problem as I did the incremental updates to the OTA of ICS. The other day I fastbooted then entired ICS .211 update and started from scratch again basically and now my GPS locks in instantly again.

Yes, it has not been telling me where to turn in time. Very laggy. Also her voice changed.

Did you try to wipe cache/data via stock recovery? Or get the app "GPS status" and erase GPS data and download new data

[Q] Atrix reboots are killing me.

My Atrix has rebooted itself at least 6 times today. Once while I was trying to post this. How do I make it stop? This sucks.
I tried to search the forum but couldn't do it from my phone. Go figure.
Take it back? Software restore? I haven't had a single random reboot

No one has really figured out what is causing the reboots. What do you have installed/Mods. One theory is if you have some after market task killer (ATK - Advanced Task Killer) it might be killing the OS causing your phone to reboot, again thats only one theory.

Right out of the box. Not rooted (yet) or anything. I notice that the task manager on this phone lets apps run wild unlike my "old" Droid 2. I have a hot phone with sub par battery life. I am wondering if I have a memory leak somewhere.
I have noticed apps like Pandora tend to lock up as a widget but continue to burn through memory. I am hoping for a system update soon.

I also have not had my Atrix reboot on it's own. You can try to hard reset your phone and not reload your apps to see if it's one of your apps causing the problem. But I bet you will have to get a replacement phone.
One thing that has started happening to me is when I used the speedtest.net app it'll run one good speed test the second run it'll display 50kbps down 50kbps up then it'll reboot very odd don't know why this might be

Make sure you charge your phone full to 100% before doing a hard reset... This helped my battery life tremendously... Don't forget to backup your data
I do get random reboots, but only once in awhile (3x since I can remember from release date of Feb. 22)... I think Motorola is aware of this issue. There is an update in beta test right now so hopefully it will be out for every in the near future.
Good luck.
Is there any update to this? I am also having random reboots on 4.1.26 and 4.1.52

I noticed when my Atrix would reboot itself, it was USUALLY when GPS was in use. I know Speedtest sometimes uses GPS to determine which server to use, which might explain this? Just a guess though.

I've only had one reboot but messing with GPS caused it. Basically I went in and out of the navigation app 4 times. I can't remember why lol.
OP: Do you leave your gps on all the time? Maybe try turning it off for a day or 2 and see if that improves your situation.
Ive only had one reboot to date as well and it was also GPS related. I had just installed the update last night, and went into the app GPS status. it locked up and rebooted the phone. only time its ever happened...?
weird
I think the reboots are associated with polling.. if not polling then some underlying data send/receive issue.
i've also had about 3 random reboots in the past week, i'm currently running 4.1.57
My phone recently starts to reboot by itself too.
Running 4.1.57, rooted, and Webtop mod.
Most of the time it happens when I try to wake up the phone. The phone would not wake up and then reboot itself after a while.
At least with the update the issue is the phone randomly reboots when there is
1. Low Signal
2. Coming off wifi and unable to reconnect data.
Pretty much when the device loses the data connection and cannot reconnect it reboots. Been worse since the 1.57 update.

when I've had random reboots, (about 2 of them since the 1.57 update) I've noticed that each time the phone was busy pulling something from teh internets, and would just jam-up. Maybe there's a buffer overload or something and the phone has to reset to clear its cache?
Then again, I know NOTHING about internets, except how to watch pr0n and dl torrents.
I too, have never had a single random reboot.
I've had 3 reboots in the past week alone. Mine usually happen at the beginning of a phone call. I'm getting sick of having to call the person back and explain that my phone just rebooted.
Anyone heard of any updates on this issue ?

How is the GPS working on the Samsung Galaxy S 2?

I'm sure everyone knows about the GPS bugs that plague the first generation Galaxy S. I've read the SGS 2 reviews and they said the GPS issues have been fixed, but can I get some opinions on whether anyone experienced any GPS issues? Is the GPS on the SGS 2 as accurate and good as the one on the iPhone 4?
Works fine. Faster lock than my IP4.
Its much faster than the Galaxy S1. I found the GPS to be close to useless on S1. On my S2 its close to perfect

Works great and picks up signals inside buildings.
I had the sgs1 for about 6 months and now the sgs2 for about 3 weeks. I was soooo disappointed with the first sgs and like you I was unsure if I wanted to give the 2 a try...
Well I read a bunch and it seems that most people are happy so I bought it...
I can say with out a doubt that the GPS is way better on the 2 than the sgs1. I could not use Google navigation at all with the sgs1... it was useless and could never lock on and would have me blocks away from where I was. I've used my sgs2 GPS with Google navigation on more than a dozen trips /drives and it has always been spot on and never had me in the wrong location.
I will say that lock times are very slow when Im driving

I run every other day for an hour or two, I use runkeeper, also when out hiking I use mmtracker to read my o's maps, I can safely say especially with runkeeper the gpx routes recorded through the SGS2 are far more accurate than the iphone4 even managing to stay accurate whilst running through the forest, actual initial cold starting is about the same if not slightly faster with the sgs2. Oh yes and practically every time I recorded a run with the iphone4 through a certain part of my forest run it would create a spike where I was apparently running at 250mph hmm not sure I am that fast, but the sgs2 always keeps an accurate smooth record, hope that helps
for me, flaky. some days i'll get a lock within a minute and then it's fine. this morn and yest - takes ages to get a lock.
basically, ymmv
Download FasterFix. You can choose from a list of servers. Choose the country closest to you or, if it is in the list, your own country. This way you'll 'half your fixtime' so it connects faster to GPS-Sat.
It's like using the aiding sensors (e.g. WiFi).
I get a fix in >10sec max.
Hope it helps.

Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Mine takes between 10 seconds and a minute. Sometimes it just sits there doing nowt lol.
Xperia X10 used to lock in 10 seconds every time, but the rest of that phone was slow lol
The only time I have ever had a problem getting a fix, I simply opened up google maps and it seemed to get a fix instantly then returned to my other gps application and all was ok.
First thing in the morning outside fix within a few seconds
Indoors sometimes can take a little longer, but never more than about 10 seconds
I use GPS a lot

I guess you said this to clarify that you've got good statistics, but a very interesting thing is that if you use the GPS often you likely get shorter fix time
The reason is that if you used the GPS recently (within hours) the cached GPS info is more accurate so the GPS doesn't need complete messsages to determine the position (it takes 30 seconds to send one complete position message from a satellite), and if you get interruptions you need to wait even longer, that is why it sometimes takes more than a minute to get a fix.
A-GPS also helps fix time in many cases.

Same thing happened to me.
Absolutely brilliant.
90% of the time it gets a lock within 30 secs , there's been sometimes when it needed a restart to get gps working properly but that's down to an app I was using previously which messed things up a bit, but on the whole I very happy with it.
The seamless integration with google maps is great. The external speaker is plenty loud & clear enough to hear the instructions but would like a less robotic sounding voice, re routing is quick & so far its been 100% reliable.
I have a built in gps system on my Land Rover but I almost always use the SGS2 gps over it. I used to have the SGS1 but the gps on that was a piece of crap. Gps on HTCs, etc, are probably just as good/better/worse, I don't know but one thing I'm sure about is the speaker volume would never be as loud & clear as the SGS2.
I get a lock up to 4m accuracy. My Captivate always had about 1500m accuracy and couldn't use it. Using navigation works perfectly on my sgs2

Excellent
Like others here, i suffered from the original SGS gps nightmare
SGS2 gps has been great for me, able to use google maps/navigation/RAC app all without problem
I didn't realise how much location based services I used untill the problems with SGS gps clearly highlighted this. Now, with my SGS2 all is good.
Is there an app like the LBStesmode for froyo that I can use to change/check the gps settings?

Battery drain

I have been having battery issues for about 3 weeks now. Plus the phone is nowhere near as fast as it was. As you can see, I'm not getting what I should from the MAXX battery. I'm on the .75 leak and have been for 2 months. How do I figure out what is killing my phone?

I'm pretty sure that's just from the unrefined nature of the .75 leak. Have you considered updating to the .79 leak? It remains fastbootable while patching a lot of bugs and I would guess increase performance.
I don't think so. I've had ICS for 2 months now and the problem is only recent. I don't know if it is an app I downloaded or what. The problem is that I don't know how to find out what it is. Between Amazon free apps and other programs, I don't know how to diagnose what is killing my battery and slowing my phone down. I am sure there is a way to figure it out, I just don't know how other than deleting an app a day and watching performance. I imagine there must be an easier way.

Do you always use 4G? It has higher power consumption.
Do you have any under clock settings for screen off that you just set, the lower frequency could be keeping it out of deep sleep.
And to see what apps are using up your battery, download Watchdog Task Manager Lite, it informs you of tasks, apps or processes that are using up a lot of cpu, memory and keeping your phone awake while in deep sleep.

I stopped using WiFi 2 days after getting the phone because 4G is honestly faster and I still have unlimited data. I have never used any set-cpu settings because I never felt I had to with this phone like I did on my DInc2. The issue I have is it was working great one day, and suddenly the performance changed without anything I can think of other than keeping skype on. I just flashed back to .181 with the expected ICS OTA. Totally screwed up. Didn't nandroid, didn't TB, just did it on a whim. Now I have encountered a whole new set of issues. It's gonna be a long night. Once I get all this fixed, I will try the app you suggested so thanks. Sigh.

Yeah.. just flashed back to .181. Voodoo rootkeeper didn't work. I got root back through the razr utility. TB wouldn't work but then I rebooted and it worked although I got the error message I mentioned above. Did a factory reset. Kept root but now my backup directory in TB is not available. Tried rebooting and it still won't work. At this point, all I care about is that my alarm works and I can go to bed and work on it again tomorrow. BTW.. after having ICS for the last few months, I forgot how much Gingerbread sucks just on a user friendly level. Took me a Google search to remember how to turn on USB debugging.
Nevermind. You can't restore from TB while still plugged and in debugging mode because the system can't access the SD card. D'oh!
Note to all users. Always back your s**t up before you mess with your phone. I hadn't TB'd in a week and lost all my notes from this week. Thankfully the phone is working back to normal on 2.3, but I lost some numbers I needed to call because I forgot to backup.
Good news: I can focus on my original problem and find out what is killing the battery.
Bad news: I didn't TB and don't know where my dentist appt is tomorrow, lost the numbers to 2 new clients and 1 new booty call.
Extra bad news: She was really hot too. :crying:

Keeping Skype on, especially when not connected to WIFI was most likely your problem, look at how low your cell standby was in that screenshot, that's indicative of something constantly using the cell radios and clearly it wasn't your voice calls, so skype maintaining a constant data connection plus it preventing the phone from going to deep sleep is almost certainly the source of that problem.

How is your GPS?

I have not see much complaining about the GPS, so I assume it's working fine for most. For me it really sucks, however. I am coming from the ThunderBolt (running CM and AOSP mostly), and GPS there was spot on in any weather. I use it mostly to track my speed when I jog and the TB did a good job.
With the same tracking app the DNA (full stock not rooted) is almost useless. The path it tracks zig zags so much due to errors that the speed estimates are way worse than what I can do in my head lol! It is also sensitive to weather, with particularly bad results when it's overcast.
Do you think it is hardware related or have people seen improvement in GPS on different roms or after flashing some GPS patch (that did help the TB). Thanks.

I've only had issues recently. I'm on stock
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
I had the reverse experience, my thunderbolt was awful with GPS. It took forever and pretty inaccurate. Never had an issue with the DNA.
I would have to agree that the GPS is poor when used in running apps. I've been using Strava for a while and the comparison between my last phone (HTC Rezound) and the DNA is like night and day. The DNA bounces around quite a bit which alters the run length and split times. I run the same route each time, and the length can vary from 2.7 miles - 3.2 miles (2.8 is the actual length).
I looked back even further and there are some older recordings that are not as straight, so maybe it's the app?
For everything else the GPS is awesome. Navigation, Foursquare, and any other location based services work very quickly and accurately.
I have noticed that the GPS drops off right a way if the app losses focus. Example, switching between Google maps and sms, when I go back to maps it had to relocate GPS.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
So it sounds like the issue is with maintaining a consistent lock rather than getting a lock in the first place. Maybe it's a battery saving feature for the phone.

Boom! Thought so... Thanks for reminding me.. Maybe OP should DL this and see what's up...
I have the GPS status app. It appears the GPS locks ok, but then somehow loses lock later. I tried using My Tracks app from Google. It locks fine, but then actually does not track my run! When I checked it in the middle of the run it had a message "waiting for stronger GPS signal." Interestingly, it would lock again while I was looking at it, but lose lock some time after I started running.
I even tried to keep the screen on with a wake lock app - - same story.
Weird. Happy most others are not having this issue.

Tips : How to speed up GPS Lock

EDIT:
After a few testing, i found that my method didn't work. I found that when GPS got lock, if you turn off GPS for a few minutes, then turn it on again, it will got lock quickly. But, turn it off and wait for a few hours, it won't lock so quickly when you turn on again.
I found settings in gps.conf is a bit strange, it is not point to any NTP server and no setting to use agps data. Also, I didn't find agps data file.

I have also same problem. My GPS is so slow to get a lock.
Here are steps I tried to speed up lock process, although not sure if it will works on your G2, but on mine, is work ok.
One more thing, my phone already rooted.
1) Download and install these tools on the market https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cochibo.gpsstatus&hl=en
2) Connect to the Internet, turn on your GPS and run GPS Status - Test & Fix at outdoor
3) press Reset GPS and Get Xtra data button
4) wait for GPS Status - Test & Fix to get a lock, it could be a couple minutes, just wait, until it gets lock
5) after get lock, close GPS Status - Test & Fix, turn off Internet and GPS
6) Now, you can turn on again GPS and run your GPS app to see how fast it gets locked. I use Sygic and GPS Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&hl=en) to test it

Mine acquires GPS lock in just a few seconds!
Mine is a T-Mobile G2
I have Mobile Data on, that helps a lot to acquire a lock since the G2 has AGPS (A stands for Assisted) (it also has GLONASS by the way)
I have never experienced any GPS problems whatsoever.
Cheers!

My Verizon LG G2 takes minutes to acquire GPS after a reboot. It's faster after that but doesn't work well indoors where my old Droid Razr Maxx gets a very quick lock.
I used mine for the first time yesterday. I told it where I wanted it to go with Google and the only odd thing I noticed is I gave it an address of 508 and would only get the 5 right. the 08 it saw it as something else. I can't remember what, but all I needed was how to get to the street. The lock was quick.

No how do you do that?

GPS issues seem to anecdotally be limited to Verizon models. My T-mobile G2 gets locks within seconds indoors even with WiFi and Google location off. Hopefully big red can address this with a software upgrade.

I have been contemplating exchanging my VZW G2 for a new handset. The GPS is no existent or intermittent on the ROMs I have tried. It seems to be better on the AOSP ROMs though. I have a few more days to do a straight exchange.

Tried this today myself. I was standing under an overhang of my front porch at work and when the satellites kicked in, that is exactly where it pointed to using satellite view in Google Maps. Never seen one that accurate before. Usually it would have me out by the street or something. This phone had me out by the street as well until using the fix you recommended. Great lead.
Thanks,
After few tweaks my location still takes about 1-2 minutes for the 1st lock. From there anytime I need the GPS it will lock in quickly, 10 seconds on average. Why does the 1st launch after a reboot take so much longer?
