ICS: Muted Colors? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Has anyone else noticed the color palette on ICS is more muted or toned down? Its as if it has a reduced amount of saturation. I think it was meant to counter act the inherent over saturation in OLED screens, and is more natural- just want to see if anyone has noticed it or if its just my imagination.
Knowing my luck t here is probably a press release that notes this as a known change and I just haven't read it yet. If so please link me to the change log and ignore the thread

Yes I noticed this a while back and started this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744846 but I guess not many people have noticed but me and a few others or they are just so happy to ICS on their Note that they are simply ignoring it. I also think its because all the reviews on Youtube where people comlained about the screen being over saturated that forced Samsung to do something about the brightness/saturation. Its a big deal to me cause ICS is not nearly as bright as Gingerbread is on the Note. The only other devices I have seen people complaining about this problem on were all Samsung devices. I hope someone finds a fix or I think i will just stay on Gingerbread. ICS on the Note is way to washed out for me to like it. I need my screen to be vivid or ICS is not for me. White has to be white not blue.

To check to see the color saturation, you can go to your dialer and type in *#0*# and test all of the colors. When I checked mine just now on the official ICS update, the colors seemed crisp, clear, and super sexy. Give it a shot and see what results you guys get.

Alright, so its not just me. I actually prefer the new color levels over what it was before. The colors are much more inline with what I see on my calibrated Dell IPS, just going to have to get used to it being 'normal' after having it over done for so long.

Oversaturated colors and blue tint, redux?

I've seen a lot of youtube videos of the galaxy s II and from what I can tell, the screen is still oversaturated like the original galaxy s, with the same blue tint on white backgrounds. Any chance this would be adjusted, or even have a user-adjustable option, by release? I'm guessing a majority of people outside of forums don't care and prefer the gaudy colors, like how they crank up the color on new TVs and everyone's face looks red, because buyers prefer it. But an option would be much needed for those not so inclined to the heavy colors. Another thing I would want is a lower brightness setting. LCDs get washed out but AMOLEDs can handle lower settings and still have good contrast. With that, the ability to adjust the minimum and maximum threshold for the auto-brightness instead of one predefined setting, as well.
I doubt Samsung (or any other manufacturer) would let you modify that much in the settings. The phone is not a monitor, however I certainly see the possibilty of changing those options (or at least some) once some kind souls will start messing with the firmwares and kernels.
*cough* supercurio voodoo color *cough*
If it involves *cough* hacking *cough* I think I will have to pass. And yes, there are less industrious people around here as well.
i am pretty sure that the sgs 2 will have the same same over saturated colours and the tint(looking at review videos).i am not a fan of amoled i do like its blacks but the over saturation does my headache i prefer ips to amoled any day. if it was not their Soc's i'd never have bought sgs.

A challenging task for the devs here ...........
I only see a blue tint when I tilt the angle of the screen. It doesn't take much to see it and becomes more extreme the more it's tilted. Looking straight on is fine. I didn't expect there to be perfect viewing angles but tilting just a little the blue tint is really prominent. Easily viewed on a pure white screen.
Great phone, though I want to use the device to watch videos and two things bother me: the blue tint when not viewed straight on and the over saturated colours. The colour green is very oversaturated much to the point where I think there's green in the videos showing up that shouldn't be there! I know you can adjust the colour tones, that include warm, cold and natural. If the image looks too yellow/green then the cold setting looks a bit more natural on some videos. I would have preferred a proper configuration for adjusting the complete colour balance.
The screen is wonderful but is let down by these two things. If it's something that can't be helped then that's the way it is, but it would be great to have more control over the colour settings and if the blue tint is really a limitation of the type of screen/glass, or the first batch of phones have an inherent fault with the screen?
On thing that is also off is the gamma curve!
greys become dark too fast, shadow details are crushed, even though the screen has the potential not to do this. On the contrary, with such black levels, the panel should be able to show more shadow details.
I suspect this is a battery saving choice, rather than a screen limitation. I'd rather have an accurate gamma though.
Google will need to allow custom color profiles in Android soon!
My Galaxy S has much more natural colors than the S2 that I just bought. I can't stand the disney colors! Hope some developer will be able to fix that soon!
Is it just me?
How come you guys say that the SGS2 has bluish tint? While when I compare it to my SGS(speedmod) and my friends SGS(voodoo) my SGS2 has a yellowish tint to it? I'm a bit confused. Anyway I've bought it and my only complaint is the sound. Voodoo control plus please!
There is some degree of control (not much though) over the saturation in Settings > Display > Background effect.

The easiest way to see this is to view a white page/screen. Look straight on and then begin tilting the phone in any direction. The blue tint becomes noticeable and more extreme the more you tilt it. I wouldn't have a problem if it was only noticeable at extreme angles, but I do see it if the viewing angle isn't straight on. For phone use this is fine, not so bothered. Not so good when watching media.
Regarding the tint,
Also when i purchased the phone in may the gray was going into pink!
On later updates colors seem better! aswell i rember i posted a request in chainfires 3d drivers tread were i ask the guy kindly to add support for custom rgb mode nightmode tones...
So from his application if u play with nightmode function you can tilt your color as u like!

There is actually a post/study about this :

[Q] Screen Color Temperature

While using my Tablet throughout the last month, one thing has really been bugging me. The screen seems to be very yellow. Rather than showing white screens as white, they're off-white, greys look a bit darker and greener than they should. The color temperature of the screen is very warm, and it bugs me. Anyone else experience this? Or do I just have a bad screen?
Better question, does anyone know of a fix for this? I'm hoping it's not a hardware problem, but a software one.
Try taking a screenshot ("n" + volume down) of this and let us look at it. I'm guessing if its yellow to us as well, its s software issue. If not, its likely a hardware issue.
Judging by your screen temp, early guess its a hardware problem, but lets see what the screencap shows.
Sent from my Nook Tablet using (((sonicboom)))
There is app called Screen Adjuster that you can grab from the market. It will allow you to change the color of the screen. I use it for night reading tobreduce the blue.
Just remember to disable it when installing apps. Otherwise the install button will be disabled.
Alright, so I grabbed a screenshot and sent it to my Droid X, which has a totally neutral color warmth, and the shot looked perfect. That's a little depressing, but still, something tells me that it has to do with the stock B&N, cause I know Google did something like this with the Nexus S for "enhanced contrast" or something like that.
I know this is probably wishful thinking, but I'd still like to believe there's a way to fix this.
Also, I tried Screen Adjuster, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. It seems to just put a filter over the screen.
There was a thread about the color temprature early on in the life of this forum. The OP is a professional photographer and was bothered by the color balance of the NT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354639&highlight=warm .

Touche. I did try the fix listed in there, but it didn't work (for a number of reasons). The problem has essentially been ignored since then, so I'm assuming either it doesn't bother that many people, or I have a defective unit. That's why I'm asking if anyone else notices it.
Though now this thread does seem redundant..
Seems the NT is a bit more yellow than standard.
http://www.displaymate.com/IPS_Tablet_ShootOut_1.htm
The Nook Tablet also has a very good factory display calibration. Its gray-scale is actually more accurate than most living room HDTVs. The White Point at 6,016K degrees is somewhat more yellowish than the 6,500K standard – that was most likely done in order to increase the screen’s maximum brightness, power efficiency, and battery run-time.

[Q] Blotchy pixelated blacks/grays in low light conditions

Is anyone else experiencing poor black to gray transitions on this device? I noticed it on wallpapers and photos last night when I was playing around, so I tried it on a netflix video and it was terrible.
Stargate Continuum has an initial starfield scene just after the MGM lion where you get the full effect of the issue. I find it much harder to notice under lit conditions, but in a dark room it is absolutely terrible. I compared it to my infuse and the infuse looked perfect.
Known issue, apparently software not hardware.
The Note does not render black levels properly due to bad gamma calibration (or I think that's how supercurio describes it). At some level, instead of showing proper gradients of black levels, it just goes completely black. So this is why you see this drastic drop off and get the blocky black pixelation in dark scenes.
Ways to alleviate the symptoms for now is to use higher resolution videos (i.e., 1080p), to use movie mode, and to use a higher screen brightness ( 60 and up I think).
It's one of the downsides of the Note for now.
i noticed that when i was watching videos..
It's a well documented problem on the International version of the Note. I'd be curious to see how widespread this is on the AT&T Note.

its not just an issue with the note. seems to be common on most current gen galaxy phones
I read the threads posted above and some people are saying they replaced the phone and the new one is much better, while others are confident it software related...grrr. I am glad I got the black tie in case it turns out to be hardware down the road.
I have the same issue. So no need to return it for a new one?

[Q] Folks, is this normal? Odd patterns on black screen

Having played with my S III for a day now, I've been mighty impressed by the vibrancy and contrast of the screen, however, during the evening, when the lights were off, I couldn't help but notice something peculiar.
To be clear, I have no clear dead or stuck pixels and the issue occurs when the device is on, displaying a black screen (though I first noticed it in video playback that had black borders). I'm unable to capture a shot so I'll explain this as best I can.
When on a black screen, there is a faint glow, when looking closely, there are patches of very dark segments throughout the screen that are true black, as opposed to the general glow of the device.
Does anyone else experience this? Is it normal?
Many thanks
Do they look like black splotches that can only be seen when viewing a black screen.in the dark? That sounds like the same problem all vitas have, something that is unfortunately a side effect of oled screens. My current phone, a samsung wave, doesn't have this issue though I've read that some other phones like previous galaxy s models produce the same problems. Bummer if that's it since I hated it in the vita

Yup its on all amoled devices starting from sgs 2 but its less on some and more on others but still I don't think it hinders usage of the mobile
I have this too and find it quite annoying (even though you barely see it, only when displaying a black picture and in dark environment).
Would be interesting to know whether really all S3s have that.
Arg, curses! Yeah I didn't notice it on my SII which is why it was such a shock on the SIII. It's only noticeable in a pitch black room but sadly now I know it's there I fear I'm going to be picky
I hope it's not the same problem existed on all galaxy tab 7.7 models which you could see circles and spots on a dark background in a very dark room. My nexus s and sgs2 didn't have it but it was so annoying (for me) on tab 7.7 which I returned it and never got another one. Take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463622
I hope it's not on all models of sgs3,I'm planning to get the 64gb model...

had this uneven black and white patches in my sgs2. it didnt bothered me much frankly
I'm wondering if this is due d
To the difference between amoled plus and amoled(pentile)....pentile screens can look blotchy, more so than the amoled plus screen
From my nexus tappin the talk
<edit post successful>
What is so annoying about it ? I bet that no one is looking at a black screen for more than a few seconds in a completely dark environment.
Try this: light up a few pixels on the screen and tell me if you still see the patterns. I bet you don't! S2 has the same "problem" and the thing is that if you switch to landscape the patterns dissapear and re-align. I guess it's how the amoleds work.

If you check the pics in the thread I posted you can see many pics of the problem on tab 7.7. It needs a DSLR with good exposure abilities to make the problem viewable on a pic ( though it is noticeable with the eye in the aforementioned situation ). If the problem is as widespread as it was on tab 7.7 this thread will be explode with pictures and complaints. *fingers crossed* that's not gonna happen hopefully.

If the issue is as bad as it was on tab 7.7 it is noticeable on any "dark" background, not only completely black backgrounds, like when you're viewing a dark pic or during dark scenes in a video or movie, I could even notice it in TW Settings.

It's impossible to see in the light/day time.
You need a pitch black room, with screen test app turn to black screen,,,slowly the wriggly lines and patches will show up. It is annoying yes - 2 phones were exactly the same defects. Each phone had it's own wriggly lines etc.
Tried to take a picture but it's nearly impossible.

Questions: Speakerphone and Screen Saturation

I just got a Galaxy Note and have some questions and concerns:
1. The speaker seems very tinny and distorted anywhere close to maximum volume – almost like a blown speaker rattles. It sounds like I am talking to someone via two tuna cans and string. Can you crank your speaker phone volume all the way up without any distortion?
2. Screen color saturation: The colors are way too over saturated. I’ve made the cursory adjustments to brightness and found one interesting app called “Screen Adjuster” and while it allows for general color balance and contrast changes, it won’t let me do much anything with saturation. Anyone know of any apps specifically designed to do this or how to adjust color saturation on this gadget?
3. Screen in general: I had to turn off Automatic Brightness as it seems the screen was dimming/lighting every few seconds. Has anyone else had this issue with their Note and perhaps might have a fix?
4. I’m assuming the only way to get the “Yellow Pages” (YP Mobile) app off and out of my contact list would be via root and a custom ROM, eh?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Regarding screen saturation, I've read on some other threads that there may be an option in the ICS international version for this setting but I haven't found any definitive screen caps to confirm this. If anyone running ICS can, that would be spectacular.
I've scoured the app market to no avail. I humbly asked the very swell fellow who wrote "Screen Adjuster" to see if he might write a fix but I'm not sure how difficult this might be.
The bottom line is what many people perceive as "color pop" to me isn't at all. It's a simple over saturated display problem. I'm a photographer and one of the reasons I got this device was to be able to lose my Asus Transformer and use this as an on the go gallery display device, but I'd never show anyone my work on this gadget - it's simply so far off of what real colors look like.
I may have to send it back at the end of my 30 days. Damn shame as I am really coming to like some of the other pluses.
If I figure anything out, I'll post back as from reading other threads there are more than a few people who aren't thrilled with this.
