[Q] Baseband question - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a brand new unbranded and unrooted S3 and as I checked my phone information I found this
Baseband: i9300ubfl2
I tried searching for it but I could not find where this ublf2 comes from as most of what I see are xxa or xxb.
Is this not a stock firmware? and if so how can I restore it to samsung's stock firmware?
And if it helps I successfully installed the first OTA update available.
Thanks in advance

If you successfully installed an OTA you likely did not have a rooted phone unless recovery was stock. Is there a superuser app in the apps list?

No superuser app in the application list. Maybe I should just wait a couple of weeks before trying to check if the second OTA is released for me.
Thanks

[Q] Official ICS Update Removes Root?

I just used Kies to update my Samsung Galaxy S2 I777 from 2.3.6 to 4.0..3 ICS that just came out. I was previous rooted and now the root seems to be gone. How do i fix this and root my phone again while its 4.03?
Does the super 1 click root work on the official 4.0.3 version?
I would appreciate any help/directions on how to reroot my phone after i updated to the official ICS from AT&T. Thank you!

So I'm stuck with this forever or will there be a fix for this in the near future?
Btw was it normal for my root to be removed by updating my phone using kies? Because when i updated previously from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 OTA using my phone's software update option, it didn't remove the root. I was surprised to see that ICS did
Also, what do you guys think about using this method to root my official version of ICS 4.03 on my S2: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
I know most people on here don't like galaxys2root.com but I'm running the unrooted version of ICS from galaxys2root.com and am having no problems.

Yea but i want to root so that i can freeze apps using titanium back, as well use root capabilities such wifi tethering and root explorer. So i need to root soon. What is the best/safest way to do this on the official ICS 4.03 version?
Well I don't know why his rooted version would be good as well...have you read the comments on his tutorial in the link you posted? Probably will give you a good idea of how it's going for other people.

It seems to be working for some people but I honestly don't want to have to root using a I9100 version/kernel to have a root. I was hoping that there was an similar root to the super 1 click root method where you can keep your phone on the i777 version.
Also some of the comments say that they are having issues with certain buttons, and on the youtube video one comment says something about getting bricked. So idk
Restore to stock kh7 with root, then flash the official rom in the dev section is the only way I know of at the moment

My humbly tendered suggestion would be that you start reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659
Oh, man...why won't someone spend the time to find this poor guy the info he needs and post the links? It's not his fault he did an update without first knowing what effects it would have on his phone. What a heartless bunch you guys are. It's not like he's been here for over 3 years and knows how this forum works.
Yes you can root the update but trying to flash an update script thru 3e recovery didn't work for me and will format your sd card when you exit 3e but I was rooted within 10 minutes after upgrading to att official ICS. Just to be sure I downloaded/installed Superuser and busybox, then I flashed the CWM recovery kernel ( if you don't know ahead of time how this process works please research before attempting it) which won't boot the phone but allows you to use the button combo to get into recovery and then flashed the latest Siyah kernel .zip (or whichever ICS kernel you prefer), which had been strategically placed on my sd card prior to the Kies flash. And voila...root and recovery.

Why not just flash the pre-rooted version?
...and then there's that ! ^ As a matter of convenience that works too...but personally I like to take what I've learned thru these forums and apply it in real life to retain the process.

Another way to do it, if you have the Odin flashable files, would be to use Mobile Odin with the everroot option checked.

Telus Galaxy Note i717 ICS update issue

Hi,
I currently have a Telus Galaxy Note i717. I have my phone rooted and was using Objection ICs Rom before the official ICS release became available on July 13th. I have been trying to install the stock Telus ICS update ota and I keep getting a message saying the update is not available even though I know it is. I have looked all over the internet for a solution and nothing seems to be allowing me to update my phone with the official telus update. I have unrooted my phone, reset flash counter, whiped partition, cache, etc using CWM, and I am still unable to download and install the Telus ICS update. Any help you can give me would be great as I would really like to install the Telus ICS rom.
I'm having the same issue but I think it's because I still have cwm. Once you flash the stock telus recovery you should be good to go. I'm flashing that once I get home.

I will try installing this. I saw on the Samsung website the baseband version had to be I717UCLF1. But I believe by installing the OBjection rom the baseband version was changed to I717UCLF6 and in order to get the Telus ICS ofiical update the baseband version has to be I717UCLF1 in order for the update to download. IS this correct? and will downloaded the previoussly mentioned file fix this issue?

[Q] rooted S3 can't update official JB

I rooted my Galaxy S3 the other day with the intention of installing one of the JB rom's out there. I thought as my S3 was not locked that the official JB update would be a little way off yet. Yesterday I find the official JB being pushed to my phone. It went through the update process and then said it could not update because my phone had been modified. I checked the rom version and it is now 4.1.1 so it seems to have actually updated everything apart from the interface which is still ICS.
Is there a way to get around this? If I do a factory reset will that wipe the root? Or can I do something to hide the root from the update?
All advice much appreciated.

Thanks for that. didn't realise the interfaces were the same. Was expecting a bit of a facelift but then I guess it's what's under the hood that counts.
It did say it couldn't update the software because the phone was modified so I am wondering what, if anything I am missing.
One thing I did notice pretty much straight away was the battery seems to be running down quicker. Could be my imagination of course but I will test it over the next few days to be certain.

Rooting will not stop you from updating OTA through KIES. It wont update through direct OTA.
Update via Kies or download the DLJ4 and flash with odin. You will have the same result

[Q] Official ROM update - info

Hello everybody,
my gt-i9100 will receive (short-run hopefully) the update to jelly bean but i have a couple of questions to avoid trouble.
At this time i have ics 4.0.3 official with root and modified recovery (not CWM). I have some root apps installed as "system app" like Android Lost, xposed framework and xposed tweakbox. I know the update will erase all my data (full update not value pack) but there will be problems installing this update with these root apps pre isntalled?
Thanks to all :cyclops:
It should cause any problems as the rom will erase all user apps and root.
What method are you planning to use to upgrade.
Kies or doing yourself through Odin.
As a precaution you could do a factoery reset before connecting to kies or flashing with odin. That way there will be no problems with stray aps.
i think i will use kies.
so i will not have issues having a custom recovery?
after upadte i must root again the device, right? if yes wich root use?

Rooting difference from S2 to S3

So my S2 died the other day and I went to buy a i9300. Now I've been searching about S3 rooting and I've found conflicting info on this.
So when I first rooted my old S2 I did it with a temporary CWM that disapeared ofter reboot stayed in stock with stock kernel and kies was able to update my firmwsre without deleting root. I actualy updated from 2.3.5 to ICS via kies without removing root or loosing it after.
I was wondering if the same could be done with the i9300 I want to remain stock for now and don't want to replace stock recovery with CWM. Is there a temporary CWM for S3 so I can push the SU binary to system part without flashing anything over stock?
