Hi all.
Its the first time I post in the Ace section.
I have some questions about Galaxy Ace. I would like to get the responses from the Ace users on XDA.
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy Mini, and it is a nice phone to have. Gets the job done for most of the daily tasks, like checking Twitter, Facebook, browsing the web, calendars, or alarms. So it is a nice phone for everyday use.
However, I am starting to feel the need for a better phone. Which is not too expensive, but is faster, smoother, and better looking. I especially like it's look. It's truly amazing one of the best looking phones ever produced by Samsung in my opinion. Probably because as a former iPhone user, it looks very similar to it in my opinion.
I am saving money from my job to buy a better phone and I thought about Galaxy Ace. But before buying it I would like to know more about it. I've watched plenty of reviews in Youtube and it seems nice but I would like to ask some specific questions.
For ex. the price of Galaxy Mini in my country is 100 Euro, while for Galaxy ACE it is 180-200 Euro.
Is the difference in money really also seen on the performance of the phone?
I know ACE has a 800MhZ processor, when rooting and flashing custom ROM's, up to how much can it be over-clocked and still be stable?
Does the phone run well with a custom Ice Cream Sandwich ROM on it and be stable for everyday use?
Does the phone run Google Chrome if we have an ICS ROM?
Does the phone tend to reboot, force close, or lag while using it at times?
And finally are you overall happy for buying the Samsung Galaxy ACE?
Thanks you for reading this.
Well the Oficail Dev support....SUCKS! But we have more than 200+ great roms!So great for devs/flashers
NOT FOR:
-GAMES
-HD VIDEO
-HIGH RAM USAGE
BASICALLY.... IF U ARE NOT A DEV/FLASHER GO GET A MDEFY OR ANY SONY PHONE (THANKS an0nym0us_ for reminding me )
Now your questions:
Overclock to : 864 (Mine but depends on each device)
ICS/CM9: Very stable now definitely daily use
Chrome: No, except if I am missing something ... but there are good look alikes (Also it runs FireFox which is better in my opinion)
Reboot:On stock yes...but on great custom roms like Apocalypse ... no
Happy: Well I am a 12 year old sortof dev and it was my best buy so far
GOOD LUCK!
I'm happy when I buy ace a year ago, but if i'm buying it now i'll be an idiot.
There are many better phone u can get with ace price range.
For example I got xperia live walkman with lesser bucks for current ace's price.
You're not really upgrading if u come to ace from mini, both got weak armv6 proc with less and less support.
Go for any armv7 device eg xperia mini, minipro, or live walkman.
Those phone got msm8255 cpu that can easily be oc'ed to 2ghz, got official ics, and i'm pretty sure its price are lesser than current ace price.
Furthermore if u get an ace now it'll be the "i" variant with close to none support from xda
ace = mini + 5mp camera so its not a worthy upgrade in any way.. ace 2 is better upgrade if you can consider but still no official ICS announced for it..and above post says remaining stuffs
Nice idea
You can overclock it at 1036 mhz max but 921 is the best. Higher and it will often reboot. About CM9....it's a good rom but when you have 4-5 apps running it laaaaaaaaaaags and freezes. I advise you to have a "official" CM7 and to mod it as you want.

Very interesting responses.
I thank you all.
I am so glad I did not buy it and asked for your opinions.
Will try to save more money and probably buy a Galaxy S2 or a Nexus.
I am not a big fan of Sony, even though it seems they produce some powerful phones. I'd like to stick to Samsung.
Thanks for the responses anyway.
I was expecting the Ace to be over-clocked up to 1GhZ as even my Mini can be overclocked to 820 or so MhZ.
I will stick to Galaxy Mini for a some more months I guess.
Thank you all.

it hasn't even released for masses and you can't expect full-fledged "dev" support for mid-range phones

ace is too overpriced so i wouldnt suggest u doing it
but i would suggest u sony ericsson live with walkman (cheaper and better) or sony xperia u (same price as galaxy ace but 2x better)

With that I agree fully!
Please dont slam our ace so much. Everyone should remember when our ace was released. Its an 1,5 or more year old phone. Sure you cant compare it with new phones. you also say its overpriced, im agree with you because of the hardware but you also know that our ace was never made for gaming or hardmultitasking or something like that. Many people bought it because of his price and iphone-look and the performance is also very good for the daily use.
If i compare my phone with the sony arc s of my uncle or the evo 3d of my sister, it has only one really big disadvantages for ME :
the old armv6 cant provide new games like temple run
so if you dont want to play games then its a very good phone for its price of 150
euro (in Germany).

Hi everyone, I got a question for you phone savvy people.
I currently have the LG Optimus One (P500) with Koodo Mobile (Sub-Section of Telus:Canada).
The Samsung Galaxy Ace has just become available and I've been strongly considering it. I've read a lot of reviews and just can't decide.
I use my phone mainly for texting and talking. I don't use data, and just use apps occasionally like Twitter whenever I have wifi. I do like to take pictures, but not videos. I don't use my phone for music or video.
So basically, I'm leaning towards switching to the Ace for $50.
What do you all think I should do?
*My phone is indeed rooted, and I much prefer the rooted version. I have no idea how rooting is on the ACE though.
Thank you.
i have had the SG ace for a few weeks and i have to say, its a nice SMALL phone
(this display is smaller than P500) ... but, its realy no comparable to P500.
The display has a lower resolution, you see LED pixel every time, and the performance is very pore.
Sorry to say that, but forget the SG Ace
+ Larger screen on the Ace.
+ Better camera on the Ace.
+ The Ace is a little smaller and 0.56 oz lighter. I'm mildly annoyed by how heavy the P500/P509 is, so I actually do care about this... a little.
- Less developer support for the Ace. This would concern me. LG must have sold a buzzillion of the P500/P509, so I assume it will continue to have good dev support.
- No 3G with my carrier with the Ace. I could easily live without that, but it's still a small con for me (obviously, this won't apply to everyone).
* Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Ace has an 800 MHz ARMv6 processor that currently can't be overclocked. That's a little better than an ARMv6 processor that can be overclocked to >700 MHz... but not much. I'm calling this a wash.
* The Ace has about the same (or is it less?) internal memory as the P500/P509, so I guess this is a wash.
* I don't know how battery life compares...?
I don't consider the Ace an upgrade. They're comparable phones... Phone Arena actually gave higher marks to both the Optimus One and Optimus T than they did to the Galaxy Ace, for whatever that is worth. User reviews are about the same at various sites like Reevoo (good for both phones). Personally, I wouldn't want to pay $50 to switch to a new phone that is almost exactly the same as the one that I have now. The biggest advantage of the Ace seems to be its 0.3" larger screen, and that's not worth $50 to me. ETA: It seems like the camera might be significantly better on the Ace, if that is important to you...

Seriously? Your friends envy your phone because it is ~1.8 mm slimmer than their phones? Do your friends know that, unlike Galaxy Ace owners, they can overclock their phones? I would definitely prefer a 3.5" screen, but we're talking about two very similar phones here.
Well, i own 2 devices now, current one is X10 but my previous device was the P500
I do suggest to some of my friends which are newbies to android to use the Ace, but after months of usage, most of them report to me that, the Ace restarts a lot...
The main reason behind this is the small amount of RAM, IMO. When your RAM is running too low, the phone will restart itself, aka soft reboot to resolve the problem.
P500 has 512MB[428mb user accessible] while Ace only has 278, get the difference?
Ace does have a few advantage over the P500 though, the slightly more powerful CPU, better camera and flash[camera flash] too, plus you can take screenshot without root too[P500 has to do this via apps, w/o root]
If both were priced at a same price,i'll get Ace over P500, but $50 is just... too much?
BTW, why not considering upgrade to some new sony? xperia ray seems good to me! A QSD8255 under the hood, 8MP camera, everything is way awesome-er than P500 and Ace
You already have an Optimus One which is quite a decent small little phone. I would save your money and if you really wanted a new phone get a more higher end phone and skip the Ace. That's what I would do, but it's your decision. Are you happy with your Optimus and does it fulfill all your needs? If you are I would stay with the Optimus and save up for a more high end phone.
I wish I could get a Galaxy SII but my carrier doesn't have much coice and I don't think I could afford it! haha.
Only good android phones my carrier has: O1, ACE, Nexus S.
The rest are either Blackberry, garbage, or iPhone.

I think he still has some contract with the service provider?
So I'm thinking of giving my O1 to my GF (because she has a crappy phone) and getting a new one for myself.
My first thought was the Nexus S, which is right now 275€ at FNAC. But I'm open to other suggestions. I've taken a look at similar phones @ GSMarena.com and the other two options seem to be the Galaxy S and the Xperia Arc.
So, can you guys help me?
Even I have the same question ..
Which other phone would you guys suggest in this price range?

Nexus S, it will get ICS very soon and also has Franco kernel
It depends on your price range.
If your looking for high end, go for galaxy nexus or galaxy s2.
But, i believe your best choice would be the nexus s, as it has koush power [CM9 nightlies]
That, combined with francos kernel is a f**cking rocket and it outperforms even Galaxy S2. Just visit the forums and you'll be amazed
P.S. - What happens to your O1 if you'll breakup?
Go for a Nexus S . Has much much support, I was going to buy but was out of my reach. So I went for a Motorola Defy and so far is a great phone , I did not fail in anything
Enviado desde mi MB525
I would by Nexus S - good support..
Unless plans change I'm going for the Samsung Galaxy W, it's pretty and not too big. It's got a 1,4GHz Snapdragon with an Adreno 205 and comes preloaded with GB 2.3.5.
I REALLY REALLY wanted a Nexus S, but my wallet can't afford it. Damn things are priced at 250€ even second-hand.
From next week onwards I should stop coming to these forums since I'm giving the Xmas present this Friday. I'll keep rooting for everyone here though
I'll keep searching for a decent priced Nexus S or even a SE Neo, but I really don't get my hope up, and I can get the Galaxy W for 105€ w/ contract.
Nexus S is just the perfect choice. That Samsung W is good...ish... Samsung will forget about that phone and I don't think it will have many community support. The CPU is fine, but the GPU kinda sucks compared with PowerSGX 540 from the Nexus S, and the Nexus has the best single core in the market. Screen size is lower too... Well if you can go for the NS, you an use my kernels as well, they are pretty popular.

I would but the Nexus S if it had contract via TMN which made it's price lower, or I found one I could buy paying in like 10 months (I would even buy a damn Galaxy Nexus if I could pay it that way). FNAC has it for 27,5€x10month but guess what, I can't buy it like that -.- So my choices are pretty limited. But you being PT like me and all might be able to shed me some light into what other options I might have.
I was looking at dev forums for the NS and I saw your kernel there so I was like "Well, I already know what Kernel to use if I get it xD"
NEXUS S !!!!! OFFFFF SssssO...... F****** COURSE MAN!!!!!

I'm glad there will still be some dev activity for this device. It is one that slipped under the radar a bit. I am mainly using mine as a PMP now as I have several other phones and it performs pretty well as a basic phone and music player. I have my Ice Cream Sandwich needs met with my ZTE Skate and soon enough on the ZTE Blade. The Ace is reliable as a phone/email/music machine and that alone is enough for me to keep it for work purposes.
This morning I bought a HTC HD2 because of the amazing capabilities this thing has. Can't decide if I want MiUi, AOSP, or Windows Phone7 on it now. Its an awesome phone and was cheap - my Xmas present to myself.
The Dev work you and others do for users to get the most out this device is much appreciated by me. I still own this phone because of the CM7 variant you provided us. As far as legacy and whatnot I can't see that it matters where the forum is. If there is an active community that's all that matters. We cannot compete with the "cool kids" and their flashy devices like the GN and such but we have a forum with active members. That is what matters. Its up to us users to keep devs motivated.

Dead? Not yet..
I brought this phone as a Bday gift to myself. It was the only phone in that price range with a flash. I rooted it after i dropped it & smashed the screen which voided my warranty. I thank the rat that made me drop my phone, coz that was when i started flashing custom roms.
I remember when the FIrst UA rom came out,i was thrilled to see custom roms being finally built 4 the ace. Also a lot of ppl here in India find this phone to be the best in the mid range price pocket. So definitely lot of users from India. Hopefully that would correlate to more devs & ultimately more activity to push it back into the main forums from the legacy section.
I read that an HTC HD 2 which has a 528Mhz processor has got ICS. So i am hoping that our ace might hang around so long as to taste maybe, Android 5.0 ? Wishful thinking or optimism,i am sure that the Ace is not kicking the bucket anytime soon & has a long journey yet..

well said by the dev. As I see it ACE has some potential yet unexplored and maybe it will get better when devs will port ICS on this device and discover new things about phone's capabilities.
But I mostly see it as follow:
Let's say you have bought a brand new PC some years ago when windows 98 where released. No matter what improvements you'll make on it, it will reach its limits and be better but never run as a new PC when windows 7 appeared.
Bottom line:
This phone can still be improved but let's not expect much. It will run for sure better than when we got it with stock rom but that's it. Afterall mobile market evolves so rapidly that even if you like this phone you'll definately find someday a new love. We are expecting more that's for sure and we pay our respects to devs for busting their asses for all of us.
To end this, CM7 for ACE still has issues and to my eyes it's not yet complete, so how come we expect more from CM9? If I were a developer I would try to make CM7 perfect first... but I am not!
very well said Jusada..

i like the ace and your blog is got i have nothing to say against it ive also use al half handy shop x1 eten glofish galaxy 3 x10 mini pro galaxy mini galaxy ace galaxy s2 but the ace is my baby ^^ im not a big dev working on wm6.1 6.5 androidbut im working on job in a handy shop and private to get the best out of my devices also the ace i like my ace as long it is booting
Postmortem:
Ace Pro:
3.5-3.7" display is a sweet spot for most people. 4" and over doesn't fit well in my hands.
Gorilla glass, always a selling point
Froyo 2.2 with guaranteed path to Gingerbread when a lot of phones were still coming with Eclair
Hotswappable SD slot
Ace Con:
Bad reputation for Wifi SOD
HVGA
Somewhat overpriced
CPU/Memory barely in the midrange market segment
I really wanted to like the Ace, and I still do in some aspects. The form factor is nearly perfect for me, Samsung knew that the iphone's industrial design was the thing to blatantly copy.
HVGA is a downer. Nothing except the lowest of the low comes with anything less than WVGA any more.
I was actively warning people off of this handset until the SOD issues were fixed, and they never really were in Samsung roms. As soon as the successor Galaxy W model was announced I immediately steered people looking for a midrange phone that direction.
All this being said, I'm still using my Ace as a second handset (its got my text-roaming sim from Philippines in it) at the moment. I'll probably continue to use it for that until a new shiny thing makes me replace my main phone (currently an SC-02C Galaxy S II).
Obviously no one can truthfully say that they will stick with their phone for 5+ years to come (though they may be some exceptions). You will certainly have to get a new one sooner or later. But I just want to say thanks to all the developers who spend their precious time for average joes like me. The Ace might not have impressive hardware or the manufacturer's support it deserves, but the community behind this device is what removed all the regret from buying it after the countless times I wanted to smash my phone to the ground in the 1 month I used it unrooted and with stock rom.
Im really happy with ace
im mostly using it for call sms emails and heavy 3g usage and also songs
not any other things
so hvga not much affect me as not playing games on it as pc games much better than mobile games
And only like to make ace looks awesome with theming
so only thing make me sad in past was miui only for beautifull looks
but now we have its statusbar due to jusada
launcher(look like)
its themes though have to make manually for launcher
and specially miui realese milocker so i not even miss miui rom
hope miui release some more apps specially launcher that supports themes so will reduce work
to make theme for tencent launcher
So im happy with it and after cm9 not want any thing else
The Galaxy Ace was my first Android phone and the one thay made me step into Android Development .
Back then at the SingTel Shop , I was given only two choices , the Samsung Galaxy Ace and the HTC Desire HD .
I did a little research and founf that a reboot problem was notorious on the Desire , so I decided to get the Galaxy Ace .
At first I was quite satisfied , since it was faster than my Nokia 5800 XpressMusic .
But then , I realised the lags with this phone , and it was then I wasn't really satisfied with this lag......that's when my Android quest began -- to search for the best custom ROM like on my 5800

I really love my phone. It's the first phone in years which I don't regret buying after a few days.. even now, 10 months later.
The only disadvantage I'd mention is the low internal memory, but that's it.
The Ace was my second android and second smartphone. I had s zte blade before. I had a choice between the HTC wildfire s or Sammy ace. And chose the Ace. But I can tell you my zte blade was amazing 600mhz and 512mb was very fast had plenty of devs cm7 etc. But the only thing holding the ace back is the ram. 384mb is horrible for multitasking and single tasking in general.
I was given the feeling that I had been ripped off. Samsung had cut a lot of corners with the Ace. Like no amibent light sensor. HVGA screen and at the time this cost £230. And the Zte blade was £99 and had a WVGA screen and light sensor. But all in all I am very happy with the Ace and am very grateful for to the devs and I decided to port aosp gingerbread which is an on going operation with emoboiix3 and Fla.sh and consegregate. But we are not dead. There is still active development.

Your link wasn't very clickable, but I'm assuming you mean the HTC Leo released 2009? That is the phone I bought 2nd hand. I have an ICS ROM on it now. I got ICS before the Nexus S. On a WinMo device. I also have MiUi to boot into if I want or can swap to WinMo 6.5.x/WP7. It definitely has a 1GHZ processor, 448MB RAM. Can't beat that for £175 really.

Well hello bigger forums I came from the Ace family and I have plans on buying SII. I've heard good rumours about the phone and I've seen lots of interesting roms for it too (plus it's on main forum XD)
My options are HTC One X, GNote or SII and SII is quite leading in my eyes ATM.
Last question is, what is the price of SII in the US WITHOUT the contract?
Thanks for the responses guys, hope to see you soon
S24Lyfe
it depends on whether you're looking for an unlocked phone (being able to use any network) or if you wish to purchase it outright from your current service provider.
Unlocked it's about $500-600, and prices will range depending on your carrier if you want to go for option number 2.
I personally own the S2 and I can honestly say I love this phone.
Took less than 5 minutes to root, plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of custom roms being developed for it, and the hardware itself is just great (it outperforms the iPhone 4s) - I highly recommend it.
Just my two cents.

S2 is still a beast when compared to other mobiles you have mentioned with the exception of HD screen. If you like bigger screens and feel compact to use it go for note, else s2 with its amoled is what you need
Thanks for the opinion guys. Im planning to buy it directly from a samsung store so yeah network unlocked. Can it run tegra games without chainfire3D? or simply does it have a tegra chip in it?

I'll be going next week so I need to make decisions now.
SGS2 is still a good phone. I had it for just over 10 months and loved it.
Got a HOX now and love that just as much. HOX has the HD screen which is lovely. SLCD2 vs AMOLED. Amoled has better blacks and such but I like the SLCD2 as well. Whites are better and not prone to screen burns.
Hardware wise both are beasts. Dual Core vs Quad Teg 3. DC is still fast enough not enough optimising quad at the moment. With TEG3 you get the range of Nvidia games without the need for Chainfire.
Design wise HOX wins, it's sexy and sleek but the SGS2 is lighter and thinner. Both feel good in the hand.
UI wise, Sense wins for me personally, but TouchWiz is not as bad it has it's own feature set.
If you want the cheaper device go for the SGS2 as price is decent. You'll be happy with any of your choices. The Galaxy range of devices are far easier to root with their unlocked bootloaders if you want to go with custom roms and such and development is very active with HOX it will get active when more devs have it. I'd still rate the Note over the SGS2 as it's a beast, if you can handle the size then definitely get the note.
I agree, the note is excellent.

but it's really big which I don't find really attractive :/
Hello there.
I currently own a ZTE Crescent (Same specs as Galaxy Ace as far as I'm aware with the exception of a front camera) and my parents have offered to get me a sim only contract, after looking online I've discovered I can pay an extra 10p and get a new phone as well as the deal I was getting for my sim only.
I've found the Galaxy Ace for £13 from Three with unlimited texts, 100 minutes and all-you-can-eat data so I'm wondering whether or not to get it or not.
Is it easy to root/flash CWM and are the custom roms any good?
Is there a fully working CM9/CM10 here yet? If not, is there any almost-working cm9/cm10 if so, what problems do they have?
Does A2SDGui and the Darktremor scripts work on this device? A2SD is essential for me.
Is it worth me going on a two year contract or should I just get a sim-only and carry on with my Crescent?
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping me out!
You might want to look on some other phones, outdated armv6 processor, so you can't play some of the popular apps like temple run.
But if that doesn't matter to you it's a decent phone with a lot of support and CM9/CM10 usable as a daily driver.
And I advice you not to take this phone with a 2 year contract.
It's already very old hardware already and in 2 years it won't be even able to keep up with the lowest- end smartphones.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, I haven't got much choice, trying to find a half decent phone for under £15 on Pay Monthly is a pain and this is the best I could find! If you have any ideas then feel free to let me know, I saw the new HTC Desire C for the same price (Only a 600 mhz processor but it runs ICS by default).
My Crescent (Which also has a armv6 processor) can run the ported versions of games such as Real Racing, Temple Run and GTA- It's not perfect but they're playable so I don't think that would be a problem for me.
The contract doesn't really bother me, I'll be flashing ROM's on it so as long as it runs smoothly I'd be happy for the 2 years, I also have my Crescent which I can run back to if I get bored of the Ace. At the end of the day, a phone is a phone, I'm not bothered on having the latest best and expensive technology.
I wanted to get Huawei Ascend G300 but can't find it on a decent contract in the UK, quite disappointing.
Thank you for your reply.
Edit-
Would you recommend either the HTC Desire C or the Sony Xperia Tipo over this?
the phone is not worth the money, you can look for xperia neo v which is better at all things and i think the same price

Ace was worth a purchase. BEFORE!
But now, Ace with that processor? nope. Not going anywhere.
Xperia Tipo is the best in that range. Has everything Ace has, but just scooped up some stuff and upgraded them.
Like the processor and stuff.
Buy the Tipo. Official ICS On it. Yep. tipo is the best option.
Tipo is available for only £7.50 a month from Talkmobile.
24 month contract
250 minutes
unlimited texts
500mb
Should I just go for it?
The only thing putting me off is the 3.2mp camera and lack of development.

Well.
That's a good offer.
Are there any other phones in your price range???
---------- Post added at 10:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:35 PM ----------
It Comes With ICS.
You might want to look at this:
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-tipo/
The only phones in the same budget are the Galaxy Ace, HTC Desire C and the Nokia Lumia 610.
No root access for the Tipo yet, if I got it and root never happens then it'd be a waste of time.
If you want root access you should wait to buy a phone and look at these later.

Only silly people buy phones without intention to root and flash custom roms! If I purchase an Android device I want to unleash its full capability!
If I wait and the offer ends then I'd be devastated aha. Might have to grit my teeth and go for it.

Oh.
No root for it yet?!
That would totally suck.
Not even Super One Click Root workss?
or universal root?
Google doesn't bring anything up unfortunately. I'd expect SuperOneClick to work but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk!
I don't want to be stuck with an unrootable device!
if you wanna buy a new phone dont buy from samsung cuz no updates
or a used one hmmmmm there is htc " may be one v"
I'm trying to find a phone on a sub £15 contract. Can't afford anything else right now. Hence why my options are low-budget devices hehe.
Given the specs of your current phone, I'd say stick it out as long as you're not desperately due for a replacement.
CM9 and 10 are indeed usable as a daily driver, but not nearly as smooth as with higher spec'ed devices. CM9 takes *all* of the space available in /system, which is an issue IMO.
Also, although this might have been a buggy application or a bug in CM9, my girlfriend's Ace battery life was good for about half a day, with no cellular data, wi-fi and UMTS (no GSM fallback).
Save yourself some money and get a better device down the road.
Ace was good enough 1 year ago.
Now its just pure shyt!
But some things are decent, like camera, call quality, vid rec, gps, etc.
In terms of gpu and cpu, its not good at all for the price!

Don't buy it now dude. Buy a phone with atleast armv7 processor. Try to save money for it

Thanks guys, I'll stick it out with my Crescent and I'll see what I can get a few month down the line.
I appreciate all your answers, it's nice to see a bunch of friendly forum members!
