Has anyone figured a way around this yet?
I'm trying to setup my accounts with gmail via IMAP, but when setting up a new account (not through outlook), and I punch in the gmail address, it auto-detects settings for pop and won't let me change it.
And before anyone says anything, the checkbox to "don't auto get settings" doesn't exist in the WMv6.1.
The only way I have of setting it up currently, is to give it an email of , then going in and setting it up manually, but this prevents me from sending email out, only receiving it.
Currently using DCD v3.0.4 if that makes a difference.
Anyone found a way around this or how to set it up yet?
Thanks!
just set it up ac ggmail.com and then change later to "gmail"

make sure you select outgoing server requires authentication (or something like that) and SSL for both incoming and outgoing
what is advantage of IMAP over pop mail?

In short IMAP uses a client/server model. Where all your email is kept on the server and cached on whatever IMAP client you're using. When you delete something on the client, it's deleted on the server too on next resynch. IMAP also supports organized e-mail sub folders (for organizing).
With POP mail, once you download an email(s), then those emails are unavailable to you from other clients you may want to connect with (such as a desktop email client or a different computer), since with POP the email is usually removed from the server on download (unless you have a POP setting to keep e-mail around x amount of days). But POP will have no idea of emails you may have moved/deleted on another client since with POP all that information is stored locally on the client, not on the server as it is with IMAP.
Also, some IMAP servers support something called IMAP idle, which is like a poor mans push mail.

There is a current epidemic of people failing to access their Hotmail e-mail accounts because Microsoft is experiencing problems with their Exchange Active Sync (EAS) service. The problems are intermittent, so access to Hotmail e-mail accounts are also intermittent. This is the case for me. Microsoft says they are working on the problems. Read about it HERE.
On the other hand, perhaps your setup for accessing your Hotmail account is with error. This is how I successfully setup the Sony tablet's stock e-mail app to access my Hotmail account.
1. Open the tablet's stock e-mail app, touch the settings icon, and select Settings.
2. On the Settings screen, touch Add Account.
3. On the Account Setup screen:
3.1. Next to E-mail Address, enter full Hotmail account e-mail address.
3.2. Next to Password, enter Hotmail account password.
3.3. Touch "Send e-mail from this account by default." to select/check or (my choice) deselect/uncheck.
3.4. Touch Manual Setup button.
4. On next screen (Account Type), touch Exchange button.
5. On next screen (Server Settings):
5.1. Next to Domain\Username, delete existing text and enter full Hotmail account e-mail address.
5.2. Next to Password, enter Hotmail account password. Note: It should already be entered correctly.
5.3. Next to Server, delete existing text and enter m.hotmail.com.
5.4. Touch "Use secure connection (SSL)" to select/check it.
5.5. Touch "Accept all SSL certificates" to deselect/uncheck it.
5.6 Touch Next button. Note: Here is where you may experience a problem connecting to the e-mail server. If you receive a message saying it cannot connect to the server, wait a few seconds and touch the Next button again. You may have to repeat this step several times before you will successfully connect to the server.
6. On next screen (Account Options), select/check or deselect/uncheck the settings as you see fit and then touch the Next button.
7. On the next screen (Your Account is Set Up and E-mail is On Its Way!), rename the account if you want to, then touch the Next button.
8. When returned to the e-mail app's main screen, select your Hotmail account and you should see your e-mail messages. You may have to touch on the Refresh icon to have your e-mail messages retrieved.
Good luck.

Step 5.3 didn't work for me. However, when I added 'debug-' as a prefix it worked. Saw this on a Microsoft support post. Full txt is 'debug-m.hotmail.com'. I certainly hope they get this straightened out. This issue started after I updated my Transformer to the lastest maintenance update.

My hotmail access in email app broke down about 4 weeks ago, but it did not bother me much until I got command from above (Spouse). I started checking around and found the same procedure posted on Sony support site 6 months ago. I decided to give it a shot.
Well, step 3 did not work for me. I checked the server kids iPad was using, which was "bay-m.hotmail.com" and suddenly it worked just fine.
Hopefully this is useful to someone.
OM
Sorry for bumping an older thread here, but the above mentioned "debug-m.hotmail.com" server has worked well for quite a while. About 3 days ago, it was no longer able to connect to the hotmail server. I removed the account and then added it again using the above steps (with debug); that fixed it last time. Not this time, though. Has anyone else run across this as well? Any new solutions?

On Step 5.1. for "Domain\Username" try "hotmail.com\" instead of "\"
should be your mail address.
Hey all,
This is my fourth or fifth android device but first time I've experienced this issue. Try as I may I cannot locate any place in my email (hotmail) account settings that would allow me to set my "display name". As such, my emails show up in other people's inbox as my hotmail account name and not my actual name.. Please tell me I'm being blind and missing this setting somewhere? Same issue for gmail as well.
Thanks,
Tawheed
I'm guessing someone else has experienced this and I must just be missing something??
Both you set on the homepage and not the app.
Swyped on my Galaxy S III
Found the setting in the gmail website as even when I sent from the website it would show my email address. With Hotmail, when I send from the website it works fine so I'm not sure why / how I set it up there to do the same when sending from phone
When I had my Droid X and I got an email, I could delete it on my computer and it would disappear from my phone.
But it doesn't do that with my S3. Even when I delete an email on my laptop, I still have to delete every single email that I receive from my phone. It is annoying. And I have tried removing, and then re-adding the account.
Any other suggestions?
I found this on another board.
I think I have it figured out - it's in the setup of the email account and the server settings.
To set up a screenname / email address:
Main menu
Applications
Email
Menu
Accounts
Click add account
Select Others, not AOL
Enter email address and password
Here's the important part - choose the manual setup, not next. This will take you to incoming server settings. It should fill the settings automatically - IMAP / / imap.aol.com / 143 / None
Hit next.
This is the outgoing server settings - again, auto filled - smtp.aol.com / 587 / None
Hit next. Then you customize the sync settings, name the account, choose your display name, and then hit Done. In Email, you can tailor signature settings, etc.
The key is the manual setup and having incoming and outgoing settings right - this fixes the trash syncing, allows folders to be displayed, etc.
Email client "no limit" on retrieval size overrides ALL other phone data restrictions
I have set retrieval size as "no limit (unlimited) including attachments" in the email client of Samsung S6.
With this setting, and with "restrict background data" enabled + the wifi nw set as "restricted/metered" in DataUsage->RestrictNetworks,
all I see is the emails are not synced periodically but when manually pushed to sync the emails (attachments, images & body) are *ALL* downloaded without being asked separately to download the attachments.
Looks to me the android email client setting overrides all other phone data restriction settings (not the sync settings).
Simply put I see no impact of email attachment downloads because of DataUsage->RestrictNetworks settings.
