Hello all,
I wonder if anyone can tell me how I know if my phone is in a dock mode? I've just bought a desktop dock from MobileFun, and while it charges it, and I'm able to access the phone for file transfer, I don't think its in dock mode. I've got Profile Scheduler, and it doesn't seem to detect when I put the phone into the dock.
Am I overlooking something obvious here?
Thanks.
If you put the phone into the dock, it shows a special "desktop page", basically a lot of empty screen with a clock in the middle.and some small shortcut icons and buttons in the top.
(cant make a screenshot ATM, my dock is at home and I am not )

Thanks. So the dock I've got seems only to be charging it, and not docking it. Any ideas about the difference? How does the phone know its being docked / charged?
Sorry to bump - promise I'll only do it once.
I'm just wondering whether the desktop dock is faulty, or whether I'm not doing something right.
How does a S3 know the difference between a dock and just simply charging, which is what my dock seems to be doing.
Thanks.
I think the phone knows about being in the dock the same way it knows about an OTG being connected, AC being plugged, the JIG being inserted and all these things, by a certain resistor value between the usually unused 5th and the VCC (IIRC) PIN of the USB port.
Or in other words there's a resistor of a special "value" between two PINs of the USB connector, and via that the phone knows what's going on down there.
The original Sammy dock doesn't (to my disappointment) do much more than just charging and allowing for connecting external speakers.
It doesn't even pass the USB through, so connecting the dock to the PC and putting the phone into the dock will NOT give USB connection
Ohwell....

Alright, yes I know how to use the search function and I can launch the Car Dock application itself just fine with the previously mentioned shortcut, however I need to switch the mode itself apparently (i.e. with the steering wheel icon onscreen).
I own a Car Dock but I want to be able to use the included cable that supports both charging and audio output in one cord. THAT only works in Dock Mode (in fact it doesnt even charge when plugged directly in, let alone route the audio to the 3.5mm jack.
I have to say that so far the thought put into the Motorola accessories like this dock blow away the HTC options and this Micro-USB to combo USB/3.5mm is exactly what I need but sometimes I just want to be able to only plug in ONE cord.
Any thoughts?
Im not sure what you are asking -- I disabled the Car Dock application by telling Tasker to open by default when plugged in.. I get MEDIA audio through the audio plug from the car dock.
Like I said, along with the car dock there is a combo cord, Micro USB to plug into the phone and USB on the other end for power as well as a female headphone jack. This cord usually plugs into the back of the dock which just extends it to the Micro-USB plug in the cradle that you set the phone into. I want to use the cord only, plugged directly into the phone.
Unfortunately the phone only routes audio out through the Micro-USB port when its in car dock mode, this is separate from the car dock app running and is denoted by the steering wheel icon in the top bar of the screen. Its switched into this mode by the previously mentioned magnets in the car dock, I need a way to switch it on some other way.
The cord is convenient because you only have to plug ONE thing in and you have both power and audio. Make sense?

Believe me, convenience makes sense to me.. I took the HD dock, and modified it so that it could be mounted to a ProClip swivel mount.. Part of that involved opening up the actual dock.. There is an IC inside the dock mount, if I recall - and I suspect that may be doing some playing around with the USB/audio split function. I did not see any magnets in there. The phone knows the difference between the HD Dock and the Car Dock - so I suspect the IC is giving it some of its info to determine that. I am not sure if magnets are being used this time around.
Does anyone know if the remote that comes with the web-dock combo will work while the phone is in the car dock? It would be a great feature and a lot safer to change songs while you are driving.
When I first got my Photon I had a problem getting the phone to seat properly in the dock using the Sprint case with holster. The case was hitting the raised area around the connectors because the hole in the case wasn't big enough, so I took a small file and carefully enlarged the hole so it could seat properly. I said all of that to say this; The phone appeared to be seated enough to be docked but was off just enough to not get a good connection. If there was anything magnet related it would have been in the dock enough to have been activated. There is definitely something in the dock that is being monitored to put it in Car Mode. If I get a chance today I'll do some testing to try and determine what is going on.

Been offline while doing some other things or I'd have replied earlier but yeah, the magnet idea was just a guess based on other reports here, I've not had a chance to disassemble mine to see whats goin' on in there.
I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the fit and finish on the dock as it relates to the way the integrated connector mates with the phone, it has an odd angle on it and even then doesnt seat all the way. Thats both with and without my slim case, both with and without the included. I dont have the bulky chrome Dell-looking Sprint case but its SUPPOSED to accept that one if you remove the spacer insert in the dock.
Hi is there anyway to activate the deskclock dock automatically just by connecting the Phone to the charger?
I really like the idea of the Dock display, but I'm not gonna build a house of cards with a magnet just so the dock comes on automatically and I'm certainly not going to buy the darn dock thing...
Is there an app or setting I can change to that when I plug my phone to a charger, it automatically pops up?
Thanks in advance
Well.. I just received my Kidigi MHL cradle with excitement
Two things... it pees me off I cannot use the cradle WITH a case on, like the other Kidigi cradles (ARG!!!! - The pic showed a phone with a case on in the cradle!), and then I discover that the AC Adaptor is defective (loud buzzing when there is no current draw.)
I'll try the HDMI in a bit if I can.
OK, what am I doing wrong here... plugged in, HDMI cable plugged in.. but screen not showing up.
Do I need to activate any special application or something?

My Samsung tv didn't like the evo 3D's HDMI (worked fine with my 4G). I ended up routing the phone to my yamaha amp's hdmi then to my tv. Maybe try another tv or device.
It's got a built-in MHL adapter? So you can plug an HDMI cable right into it?

Yes, apparently so. http://www.kidigi.com/product_lv2.php?pid=1316
Typically doesn't say 'mhl' in kidigi's page though.. but did on ebay.
I have ordered another HDMI cable (v1.4a) just to be sure... but as the ac adaptor is making an audible buzzing, I'm seriously likely to send it back anyway.
I was previously using an HDMI to DVI cable with this, and it didn't work at all. So I ordered a V1.4a HDMI cable instead.
It is most odd, because it seems to work intermittantly. The monitor keeps blacking out for a few seconds, and then working fine for about 20 to 30 seconds.. then blacks out for a few.. then works for 20 to 30 secs....
Not sure what to make of that really. Maybe the auto-rotation is messing it up a bit.. will have a fiddle with the settings.
And now it seems to be working just fine. I had made sure cables were pushed in... maybe the rear wasn't in enough.
Apart from that, I had changed from 'charge only' to 'HTC Sync' (whatever that is), and the phone is now fully charged in the cradle.

How does it look on your TV? What size is your TV? I bought two MHL adapters and NEITHER work on my 61 inch Samsung DLP, but they work on my mom's 19 inch HDTV. However in some areas the picture seems to have a faint checkerboard pattern, especially when scrolling through the gallery. You notice this effect at all?

I will have another look tonight. I'm viewing it on my 26" monitor. Image looks a little grainy I remember, but that's due to it being on about 720p rather than 1080p I believe.
The auto-rotation is a bit screwed up when it comes to 'dock mode' though. You enter docked mode, it displays in portrait, but then when the weather gets displayed it only shows the weather animation and goes into portrait mode (even though the phone is still in landscape), so pushes things off screen. I have no idea why it does this.
My O2X HDMI output is flawless. TBH considering the amount of *****ing the O2X got (even by owners), it's a phone that works very very well.
If I can get the 'issues' sorted out I'll look to get an android bluetooth keyboard and mouse
I have the same dock and the problem is it only charges with 500mA. I made a Tasker profile for a Desk Clock and when the screen is on, the net current is like +2~20 mA (practically zero) So I did the charger mod (soldering together the data pins) on the AC adapter and now the AC adapter itself can charge the phone with 1000mA but the dock itself presents itself as USB and falls back to 500mA. I will either try hacking the data pins on the dock or patch the kernel to allow for fast charging. I have to look into it more though, MHL portion might stop working with data pins crossed.

For a dock that I might have the phone in for a while, i would prefer it slow charging anyway. Means device should be cooler.
I do not have a cradle but my MHL adapter does suck battery and a dirty hack to maintain battery would be great.
Does anyone have experience with this dock:
http://www.amazon.com/Hyperion-Stan...355001050&sr=8-1&keywords=hyperion+dock+one+x
The reviews claim that it does not bring up dock mode, but the most recent review from July says that its possible with a little modification (bolded).
"I have an HTC One X (AT&T version) and wanted a dock to allow me to use the phone as an alarm clock/bedside device.
The design for this charger is actually quite good, but the build quality leaves much to be desired, at least in my opinion. When I plugged in the dock to power and docked the phone, the charging light did not come on, and the phone kept switching between dock mode and normal mode every few seconds. Also the charging (actually power) light never came on. However, the phone charged just fine, and the dock was heavy enough to not have a risk of tipping over, and fit the phone perfectly.
After reading other reviews, I knew that the dock didn't actually put the phone into "dock mode", so I planned on modifying the device from the start and decided not to send it back because of it's flaws. Upon taking the dock apart I saw that it had a circuit board that looks like it was designed for several types of HTC phones, because of the many blank spaces for components. There was a 10k-ohm resistor which I assume was intended either for the LED power indicator, or putting the phone into dock mode (earlier HTC phones used a 10k-ohm resistor to indicate dock mode), but it's hard to tell since it didn't actually connect to anything. While that was concerning, even more so was the fact that the LED was wired to the wrong pad on the circuit board. When I connected it to the right pad, I found the blue LED was extremely bright, too bright for my intended bedside use. I wired a less-intense red LED (because red doesn't affect night vision) to a 100-ohm resistor connected to the +5v on the USB port. Wiring a 47k-ohm resistor between pins 4 and 5 of the USB port was sufficient to tell the phone to go into dock mode.
Overall, if you just want a dock to charge the phone, or want to put in a little soldering to make it into a decent dock, I can recommend this device. Otherwise I would wait until the higher quality docks come to market."

Has this mod been tried by anyone? Will it work on any dock?
Sounds good and logical to me.....try it....I might to if I can get the dock ordered.... Y wouldn't it work?

Dock mode
if I look in the settings of my Telus HOX+ it has dock mode listed with choices that pop up when its docked. I do not have a dock to see what it does but do not all HOX+ have a dock setting? I was hoping it was more magnet activated like my Atrix was
Does anyone have an idea as to why my phone will enter dock mode every single time it is on a charger? I find it extremely annoying, and it makes the use of my phone a lot more difficult. Many thanks to anyone answering.

as long as it sends data, then i see no issue. and now you get dock mode for free. Dock mode has 2 modes based on the resistance in the data line or VCC+. 1 mode is recognized as Home, and the other Car Dock. 10kOhm triggers auto dock mode, 68kOhm triggers desk dock mode. those numbers may not be accurate, but its the best description i can give since i cannot remember... lol.
