USB Debugging On When Received - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Does anyone happen to know why the USB Debugging was on when I received my new S3 SIII today? I was just wondering if this was normal, or if I needed to be worried....
I didn't want to root or mess around with anything if I needed to swap it out first.
Thanks ahead of time.

Mine was on when I received mine as well (T-Mobile, if it matters). I haven't noticed anything else weird, already flashed a ROM and Kernel, everything works great.

Mine was on also

[Q] Purchased new X10i, 3G problems...

Sorry guys, noob here, couldn't find a thread that specifically talks about AT&T. Just purchased a X10i (I also have the AT&Ts X10a) and even though the phone downloads the AT&T settings from the net, there is no 3G. I guess I should have checked it, the retailer I bought from is MobileCityOnline and they have a little blurb about compatibility.
I must have missed that. Now my question is, would flashing the phone to a different ROM from here might help me? Long shot but I am just wondering before I send this phone back...
The X10i is lacking the correct bands to make it 3g capable on AT&T as such only connects via edge. I think you can connect to 3g on T-Mobile though.
X10a - 850/1900/2100/800
X10i - 900/1700/2100
1700/2100 needed for T-Mobile
850/1900 for AT&T
Hope this helps.

Thank you Sopdogg,
I am returning the phone, it will cost me restocking fees but good lesson for not doing my research properly.
So just to make sure, I need to check that the phone operates on HSDPA 1900 foor AT&T 3G, correct? I found another website that sells the X10a, I might just go with that.
The problem with my own AT&T (which I debranded/unlocked) that it shuts off when it gets hot, like about 48C usually. And anything can cause that, surfing the web, phone conversation, using the GPS, I am sick and tired of it. That is why I am trying to get a new one, maybe this one I have is faulty...
Why don't you get a new battery?
Sent from my X10a using XDA Premium App
Or you could send it in to SE for repair/replacement. Buying a new phone is dumb if the phone is still under warranty.
The overheating on the x10 is from faulty chipset, theres a thread mentioning it around here, they will prolly replace it if u send it back to SE

Thanks all, I sent the X10i and got a refund. This X10a I have is the original ATT release from 2010. Heat issues first started a few months after purchase with Google Nav, the phone would shut off while navigating and restart... I didn't put much thought into it back then but it became very annoying. And it was only doing it with Google Nav (thinking since the GPS was on) One day I realized it didn't crash at all because it was sitting in front of the air vent of the car with the AC running so I was then it was heat related. I updated to wolfbreak's rom, left stock kernel, but when it hits around 46C if I am trying to use 3G internet, nav or similar app, I know it will crash. If I get into my hot car after work and plug the phone to charge it, I know I can't use it because it will crash. It sucks. I didn't want to bother with ATT since I got rid of their bloated firmware. I didn't bother with Sony since I read on FB that it took months for people to get their phones back, and only to send it back. This is my only phone right now.
A new battery would resolve the issue? Thought about it but wasn't sure... wish there was a diagnostic software to tell me if the phone or the battery is the issue...
Wrong BB maybe... I flashed to BB67 and it seems to be working OK. One thing I noticed, when there is no signal, or I am at a place signal is very weak, in and out, it heats up pretty quick, and then crashes... It did the same with BB54 which was stock. So this problem might be ROM related, not sure...

I suffer from this same issue, one of the providers in my country recalled all the x10's and replaced them due to this. my provider did not.
Replacing the battery will not solve this "tried and tested"
Yes SE service center's may or may not replace the device.
They may even lie to you and say that you had tampered with the hardware of the device.
They may tell you that you have water damage and then show you a picture of the epoxy they put on the usb connector.
Send it back and be persistent.
Never assume it's, fixed test it first
I think the best deal is to find and buy another X10a. Then I might try to send this one in. See I have no phone if I send this one in...

T mobile firmware update?

Before I start I should probably say straight away that I have scoured the forums for this and haven't found anything enlightening, though I have seen a few people have the same problem.
Anyway, I have a GS3 and I'm on t-mobile (UK). I noticed that my phone doesn't have an option to "check for updates" under settings > about phone as others do, which is odd, but other posts from people have informed me that some t-mobile (and orange too?) locked handsets have had this option removed for whatever reason. So this is a bit annoying, but I'm over it.
The problem is that I want to update to the latest firmware (XXBLFB or something) and the absence of this button means I can't check for updates. So I plug my phone into Kies, and Kies doesn't think there's an update available either. So I'm just wondering whether anyone else on t-mobile has received the update at all - via kies or via OTA?
I realise that xda isn't the best place to ask this as most people on this forum will just flash the latest firmware using odin, but I'm not prepared to do that at the moment!
I dont think all carriers release new updates at the same time.
So its just a waiting game. Unless u step up to kies big brother odin

Did you get the phone from a T Mobile store, or CPW, or Phones4U? If it's T Mobile, they can be a bit slow. CPW and P4U are generally open fw as the phones are unlocked.
oops should have read all of it sorry.
I'm on T mobile but my phone's unlocked (CPW).
Have you tried connecting it to Kies? Does it say anything about firmware?
Why don't you just flash the United kingdom unbranded version of xxblfb(BTU). I'm with t-mobile and that's what i did. The advantage is it doesn't come with all the bloatware and you'll probably have a better chance of getting the latest updates quicker via kies.

Yeah, when I connect to Kies it says I have the latest firmware, so I'm assuming that t-mobile just haven't decided to roll their version of the firmware out yet. It just seemed strange to me since other networks seem to have got the update quite a while ago and it's not even that big an update - with the jump from gingerbread to ICS on the galaxy S2, the gap was only a couple of weeks between networks.

Yeah I am considering it, but to be honest odin scares me a bit! Does the t-mobile version have much in the way of bloatware? I was pleasantly surprised, apart from being locked to t-mobile I couldn't find a single bit of t-mobile branding, not even the startup screen!
I'm also worried that if I flash to an unbranded version then should something go wrong with the phone and I need to replace it, I won't be able to get the t-mobile branded firmware back which might cause warranty issues?
Id hold out for official jelly bean.

Personally I think Odin is safer than kies but I'm only saying that because I've had a couple of problems with botched upgrades via kies and I feel Odin is more secure. Sorry.. just remembered I bought my phone SIM free as I wasn't due an upgrade from t-mobile for another year but from what I recall with the s2 it came with a load of bloatware. I got the before mentioned firmware update via kies about a week after the phone arriving which was relatively quick considering some other networks still haven't released their version. You could always download the t-mobile firmware from Sam mobile and keep it as a back up but really it's entirely up to you as I wouldn't want to be responsible for jeopardizing your warranty mate.

Mdk phone

I'm walking to Verizon today 8/21/13 to get an s4. What are the chances I will get a phone that does not have the me7 update yet.
And if I do get one with mdk what steps do I take to not receive the updates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Ask to see the box before you buy it. The firmware version is clearly labeled on the sticker on the box.
It's very possible. just make sure you TELL them to NOT upgrade!
they don't have to, if you ask them not to, if they do, tell them go get another one that has old firmware as the new one is having issues..
then airplane mode back to house and root + recovery
profit
I think they MAY have still boxes of SG4 with MDK not updated, just make sure they KNOW you won't take it with the upgrade, I did it with the SG3, with the 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 rooting, as 4.1.1 was EZer.
Thank you guys for the responses. I feel more comfortable going there!
I'll be back later hopefully with my new rooted and rommed s4.
Again thanks for the quick responses and help!

I'm gonna post on this thread to ask a question since it's related and I don't want to start a new one.
I'm having sensor issues on my device and I called verizon. They said it wasn't a known issue and he and offered to send me a CLNR via overnight Shipping. I accepted their offer. I'm not sure if they are still shipping phones with MDK on them. The tech support guy said it will come with the update, but I'm not sure if he knows or not. My question is, has anyone received a CLNR thru Verizon tech support lately, like within the last week? And did it come with MDK or ME7?
If it has ME7 on it, I'm for sure gonna send it back. I'll make some excuse as to why.

Well I really really hope it's MDK. Or else I'm gonna send it back. They'll prolly be pissed at me for it. I don't see any reason why they could deny me sending it back. In my experience if your just adamant about it they can't deny you. My device really is having some issues (not related to my rom) but I will live with it if it means keeping my ROM and recovery.
5 days ago only 2 of the 10 S4's the guy at the Verizon kiosk had at my local mall were MDK. They're thinning out IMO.
What Andy and others said is spot on, ask for them to look, don't let them upgrade, and keep it in airplane mode until home.

If that salesperson wants to make a sale, I would have them go to the back and find a mdk version, it is on the outside of the box, if they bring you a me7, say, can you look for a mdk, if they refuse, bye bye, go to another store, you will find someone who cares to make a sale.
good luck sir...

Just wondering, but why is it such a big deal if you get and MDK phone over a ME7 firmware phone? There is an exploit out now to root either.

For Android power users just being able to root doesn't quite cut it. Yeah you can do alot more than you could with just a stock phone but you can't flash custom software like roms or Kernels. Which is a big deal to alot of people. It's enough to not make you want a device.

I'm assuming there isn't a workaround for a custom recovery yet then, is that the issue? See I don't notice those problems because I've had my phone since before in-store devices were available and rooted it a few hours after it was out of the box so I've never had a hangup or issue with this.

Called Verizon trying for replacement. They said put in safe mode.

I told them that my phone was overheating and would freeze and shut off while on and off the charger after updating to ME7 (which it actually does). They told me to put it in safe mode for 24 hours and see what they find. I know I have to unroot it before putting it in safe mode. Anyone else have to do this to get a replacement? How did it work out for you?
That sounds like BS to me. Someone might tell you this in hopes that you somehow solve your own problem. But, I would just get irate and tell them that it's their responsibility so give me a claim number and tell me where to send the phone.

It's that simple :good:
My replacement phone I just received 2 days ago had no wifi strength and the bluetooth would skip when I was holding the phone (anyone ever heard of that happening?) I called them last night and told them I done everything I was supposed to (factory reset, troubleshooting) they over-nighted me a CLNR got it this morning. I'd call again and ask for someone else because I've never heard of safe mode on the phone-they just didn't want to do their job I believe....
I just wanted to make sure they can't get inside your phone or anything by putting it in safe mode. What should I tell them when I call back. Any messages or info come up when I take it out of safe mode that the tech may ask for?

Four tries before working replacement
I too had overheat problems w/ my phone(s). Including the original phone Verizon sent me four phones before a fulling working one arrived. The certified program, in my experience, is crap. I've gone through multiple models, S4 & Razr MAxx, when phones were replaced for faulty operation. Good news is the last, working, model S4 I recieved was still on MDK. It was rooted within the hour after receiving it. Eclipse ROM and never a problem since. Be persistent, call back as often as needed, and don't take no for an answer. And safe mode, bunch of bull****. Factory reset is only reliable fix. About half the time...

What they said-def keep calling back. I read in a post a few months back about someone saying Verizon was able to get into our phones to help look for the problem not sure how truthful that is-but I would not allow them to hop into your phone they could prob see if you rooted or not. My replacement was MDK thankfully all the bloat they put on these phones really burn me up. And sometimes it does take several replacements before you find one that is perfect-my husband went through 7 Rezound's before he got a good working one. Now I'm the one with the issues LOL

[Q]Buying t-mobile s5 to use on AT&T, What to look for

I want to get a t-mobile s5 to use on att and I want to have root access. So from what I have read, root is not an issue with this phone and the worst case is I have to flash a lower version firmware/bootloader. Then from there I could upgrade it to any version I wanted. After its rooted I was planning on using gsmzambia to usb unlock it. Is there anything that I have missed or should look at before buying a phone? Just want to make sure I don't get stuck with a phone I cant use. I just got rid of a 5.0 att s5 because I couldn't root it, so i'm a little cautious right now, lol.
I thinking of doing the same thing. Least expensive place I can find is retail store and just buy a prepaid version. I would use cellunlocker. Not sure if I can post the link or not. Would it not work? It is less.

You can root the AT&T s5, you just can't unlock the bootloader. But that's neither here nor there.
You will be able to use a T-mobile s5 on AT&T, no problem. I did a small thread on what you will need to do once you have it unlocked and rooted. You can find that thread at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/help/tips-using-g900t-att-t2975336 .
This includes setting up the APN properly, what Tmobile apps you need to turn off or freeze, etc.

It is my understanding you cannot root AT&T s5, sm-g900a, that came with 5.0. If you can, where are the instructions? I have searched for hours! I too am ready to ditch this phone because I cannot hear on it without a volume booster (and for other tweaks), and I do know about the setting that will let you adjust the volume once in a call.
Thank you for the how to set up T-Mobile phone for AT&T.
If u get a T-Mobile s5, g900t, all you have to look for is to make sure it isn't running the of6 ota update. From what I read, downgrade is not possible if taken. I can't confirm 100 percent but this is only major thing to look for.
I have a g900t and am on ATT. I previously was like you, stuck with a g900a that was unrootable. Glad I switched.

I just bought a T mobile branded phone from Craigslist. I asked the person to look at there settings and tell me the version model and baseband. Once i found what i was looking for a bought it. I paid 250 for it and had them meet me at T mobile to verify every thing and get it sim unlocked. I am on it now using it with AT&T running TMS3.0 and KT kernel. Used phones are not as bad as some people think. There are a lot of people out there that don't even know what rooting is and they want a new phone every time a different one comes out. The one i bought is flawless and works great.
