Hi, does anybody know a link to a guide in the different camera modes for xperia s? Like what does portrait, landscape, night portrait, etc does. I want to understand how each mode works cause the camera aint that good especially under low light. Most of the time its blurry.. But under good lighting conditions, the picture i get is just mind blowing. So i want to know the right modes for any scenario to get the most out of the camera. Thanks.

Hi there. Well first of all, I dont know about any guide about making photos on XS. And what you are talking about are scenery modes. Those are made exactly to help the final look of the photo by adding contrast or light to the photo. So if you are taking a photo at night, select the night mode and the photo will be less dark and be better looking. I know that it wont look like those good light photos you can take by the beach cause phone cameras are just made that way...
Oh yeah and also that sport mode is wery usefull! It takes the photo very fast so there will be no blurred objects like a person who is jumping into a pool. Looks good and you can really capture the moment with that mode So, to wrap it up, when you are taking a photo in good light I use the normal mode with multiple objects focus. In low light conditions I use the Scene modes. Hope this helped

In the xperia S camera you dont have those options mentioned in the article... Besides the sport mode I alrrady described. Just saying

There is description about portrait and landscape mode,i know the phone's camera doesn't have physical aperture and shutter but he can understand the idea.

Thanks for the help there but i dont get the sport mode. Does it decrease picture quality? Same with landscape. Because why would i set to normal mode when you can have sport mode which as described, reduces blurr.. The main prob on the xs camera. So is it practical to set the default to sport mode instead? Sorry i aint no pro like you..

To capture fast object, you need fast shutter speed. The thing is when shutter speed is high, less light got into sensor, in a result of darker image. So the camera tend to push the iso level higher which create more noise.

Hello Guys, Im new to this forum with N number of Qns , because Im just a beginner of the smart phone users. I have got a new SE Xperia x10 and was very excited to capture the pictures using 8.1M camera.. But unfortunately the quality of the pictures that I have taken so far made me disappoint, still the HD video recording looks good. My question here is when the Video quality is good, how can the image quality be poor that we use the same camera for both the purpose. Also, is there any fix available to improve the camera quality, because i strongly believe that its not a hardware issue.

Most people have found that using a camera app called "Vignette" improves photos taken greatly.

I really think you need to learn more about photography. Mp dont mean anything when it comes to camera quality. I take outstanding pictures with this phone...and if you would like a link to another forum on pictures taken with this camera i can show you....it will blow your mind. I already explained how to get the best out of your camera in another thread. Did you turn off image stabiliser?
Do you expect dslr quality from a smartphone? Cuz it wont happen.
I would strongly suggest practicing with your camera like flo said.
Im not trying to be rude, im really not. But this is one of the best camera phones out there believe it or not.

Resolution: 6mp Wide (16:9) I use that more that 8mp because I like the widescreen pictures...and remember lower mp doesn't mean less quality!
Scenes: Normal
Focus Mode: Infinity...or macro for close up shots
photo light: always off
self timer: off
metering: Center weighted or average...spot metering is used for when your taking a picture and the light from the background is darkening your subject. Its not what you wanna use all the time...only for those situations when needed. average metering also known as matrix would be the most accurate.
White Balance: depends...if its cloudy outside ill use cloudy, if its bright and sunny ill use daylight or just auto. Most of the time I stick with auto. But playing with it properly gets nice results
image stabilser: always always off!
smile level: Normal
the +/- is the EV control I was talking about. yes it goes from -2 to +2.
And here is how I always always use it.
if its bright and sunny outside, or you just have alot of light, I will usually lower it to -1 or -0.7
Inside pictures, or low light situations I lower it to about -0.3 maybe -0.7. What that does if darkens the photo but eliminates low light noise.
Try that for a while and see what kind of pics you get. Also, keep a steady hand. When I take pictures with my phone I wrap both hands around the phone and hold it firmly to reduce any hand shake that might happen. I just find that works best for me.

Man, i remember my old sony ericsson k790a. I think it was a 3.2mp camera phone, but holly **** the quality was awesome!! I believe it had xenon flash to if i remember correctly.

Yep I know.
the software is what determines the quality you are looking for. The camera will construct the picture/video information like pixel info, frames, etc. but the software is responsible for cleaning it up.
i find the X10's camera amazing, it takes crystal clear pictures IMO and i can even use them as wallpapers on my PC and they are still clear.
the X10 will always be the best

Ok, it seems like every picture taken under the conditions mentioned above(sorry forgot to write them: natural light, inside my room, pretty much a well lit room, besides the fact i didn't turn on the lights) and everything else set on auto, have the same result. I get either a blurry shot, without the antishake option and a noisy one, when having antishake on.
Also i would like to mention, that this particular behaviour happens in a rather well lit environment. The only time i get acceptable results is when i go out and shoot in the natural sunlight.
Is this normal?
You didn't list any conditions above.
Let me just add some examples, maybe you will understand what i'm talking about a little bit better
1. camera ics+

Well then, why other camera apps shoot a little bit better? My old Samsung Omnia was a better shooter in this regard. Also, could you provide some photos too?

I did, but my iso is always on auto nevertheless
I would try three things:
- Set ISO manually. I don't have an S3, but with my S2 I get the best results by setting ISO manually.
- Turn antishake off. In general, electronic stabilization adds noise (unlike mechanical/optical stabilization which does not add noise).
- Try to hold the phone a still as possible while taking the picture.
That said, keep in mind that any small sensor camera like what you have in any phone is not going to perform well without good lighting. However the S3 should be one of the best of the phone cameras.
yes u r right that while using antishake option it produces noise thats y its off by default!! and u r wrong that it is blurry bcoz if antishake is off my gs3 takes noise free perfect pictures its has a gud BSI sensor (Cmos) try not to shake ur hands while taking pic.!

my first gs3 phone's pictures were immaculate in doors and out, but i had overheating issues so i got a replacement...this new phones camera does this...too much noise, didn't have that with the first phone the replacement phones case came damaged so i'm hoping to exchange it once more...hopefully the next phone won't have this camera problem....

ISO --- sensitivity to light
you will have noise or sometimes blur in door or low light situation...
that is because aperture of camera has opened wide then it results other two components compensate to maintain proper exposure
that will increase higher ISO (more noise) and shutter speed is slower to get more light ...

I dont think you understand that I have S3 and S2 with me and test them under the exactly same conditions and results are very different from all the tests of S3 on the web which clearly show that S3 takes better pics.
hm....it's hard to explain...unless you have DSLR and know how to do manual setting...

I think its just like taking the picture under sub-optimal dim light (small aperture size on tele)
Of course, u can always use tripod to prolong the exposure, but this trick works well under handheld condition :good:
I've been trying to take still pictures in my C5 ultra and they all turn out overtly grainy to the point that they look like they were taken on some other phone.
Sometimes I need to add flash even to well-lit rooms. I've lowered the ISO and I've tried changing manual settings. The pictures still come out blurry and grainy to some extent.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? This is kind of frustrating, I was expecting the cam to be decent.
Are taking pictures Indoor? Artificial light does that.
If you take pictures under bright sunlight, are the pictures still grainy?

I've taken pictures with no artifical light and the pictures are still unfocused and don't look as good as you'd expect. The focus is also really strange and doesn't seem to be working properly.

Took pictures of a figure to illustrate what I meant. The first one was taken with the flashlight turned on. The second one was without flash.
ISO settings were turned down to 100. But I can't seem to get the focus right. I'm coming from an LG G3 and getting this phone to take pictures that look decent (note I'm not expecting perfect photography) has been a pain.
Could be the shutter speed, try Manual mode and select 'Sports' Scene for the fastest Shutter speed, usually works with Flash or Good amount of Sunlight

One of my few complaints about this camera, is the fact that it's one of the few flagships, if not the only one where we don't have an HDR toggle, and that we have to go to a separate mode to force HDR. Why don't they give us the option to choose whether we want it always on? I'll post few pictures down below that showcase how much better the picture looks with HDR vs not having it on, especially when you zoom in, the difference is night and day.
So, is there a way to force it to always be on? Maybe through ADB, and although it's been years since I rooted any of my phones, I would do it in a heartbeat if there's a way to force HDR to always kick in. A donation for someone who can do this is also on the table.
Again, please take your time in checking the amount of detail and colors HDR is able to grab, especially once the telephoto camera kicks in.
Not that I know of, it is one the things that annoyed me since I started using Huawei with P9 and then Honor View 10 before P30 Pro.

I never get note of this but you are right, i tested the same on my p30 pro and HDR isn't the only thing, images are a lot more sharper on HDR mode when using telelens.
the effect isnt so dramatic when using the normal 40mpix lens but when telelens is used the HDR mode kicks in really good.

That's because it does automatically use HDR at times, but sometimes when you need it to use HDR, it doesn't, and that's what pisses me off.
What sucks for me is that almost never it uses HDR when shooting in portrait mode, in many instances I end up getting a blown up background when I use portrait mode with a bright light source in the background.
The hardware on this phone is capable of wiping the floor with the Pixel 3, and even their software, it's just that Huawei has been sticking to some dumb choices for years now. All our complaints, and they decide that they don't want to listen to them and do anything about it.
This has been a complaint of mine since the P20 Pro. I do not believe there is a way to force HDR, though I really wish there was!
i think the must put HDR switch on/off in the main camera interface , and the HDR image its a way better then the non HDR image tacking by camera

No the camera did not always shoot in HDR
If you switch the mode i would bet it does, it is not on the main interface but there is a dedicated mode for HDR. I would extremely doubt that this mode has no function

We want a quick toggle that gives us the option to choose if we want HDR to always be on, auto, or off, just like on almost every other flagship. We don't want separate mode.
Who "we"? It is so simple to choose hdr mode. And if AI is turned on and phone says "keep steady" it means it take hdr shot then.

Oh I'm sorry, did it bother you that I used the term we?
I'm talking in general, there have been tons of forums about this issue with Huawei's camera app, so I'm not the 1st to complain about it, and I definitely won't be the last. And as you can see in this thread, WE as a majority still find it stupid to put HDR as a separate mode and not a quick toggle, kinda like they did with the AI mode before, until they changed it the past few months. Now, if you have no issues with this, good for you, and this forum isn't clearly for you.
And two, I posted images with AI on vs HDR on, and if you can't see the results, then that's on you.
I want this feature too... HDR always ready on Main Camera, HDR+ will be much awesome...
