Has anyone else had a problem similar to this? I've figured it's due to wear and tear, but I know I don't use my phone half as much as many people do here, yet I can't seem to find any information on this.
The same thing happened to my Captivate last year, which I had owned for about 20 months. Ironically, it's the reason I got my Note back in March and now I'm having the same problem, just sooner. Basically, my phone will sometimes reboot itself sometimes if the button sticks. It is noticeably more pressed down than when I first got it and even more than the volume keys.
Try opening it up and re-sit the button. You may need to clean out some gunk/dust. Or, you may need to replace the button. Replacement parts cost only few dollars from ebay.

Thanks for the response. Do you have a link or something that will instruct me on how to safely deconstruct my phone? I've never done and I want to make sure it's carried out properly.
I'm having the same problem. The phone isn't even a year old. I tried removing the screws in the back hoping the white cover would come off so I can see the internals but I couldn't pop it off. (then again I didn't try pulling that hard) I just press the button a bunch of times and the phone eventually turns on again. I saw on eBay a power button repair service for $45. If i knew how to open the phone I would probably try to do it myself.

If your phone is less than a year old .... This is a known hardware issue. This is an example of when it is acceptable to return to AT&T or whoever for an exchange. I am strongly against all the return for operator inflicted issues, but this is an issue with these phones and you should be calling for a replacement.

If you need to you can always disable the button and use the volume keys to turn the screen on
I've had my N2 for over a month now, and recently noticed that the power button is quite sunk in. A lot more than the volume rocker. To be honest, I can't remember how it was when new, because I noticed it when I tried a case that covers the sides, and the power button was a little hard to hit. It does click and bounce back, but it is looser than the volume rocker as well. My wife has an SIII, and her power button sticks out as much as the volume rocker.
So, are all N2s this way, or should I exchange mine? I'm afraid that if I wait much longer and something happens, I'll get a refurb as a replacement from Verizon...
To be honest I feel like mine is the same way. Its more sunk in than the volume rocker and sometimes it takes me a time or 2 to push it. I noticed it shortly after getting my phone (January 3rd) and I do actually see it being problematic long term.
Mine isn't like that, I'd go get a new phone if I were you guys.

Mine is a little loose but not sunken in at all.

Mine is still nice and pressed out. I normally reboot from an app so my power button never gets touched

Well, I called Verizon and got a replacement shipped to me today. The new phone's power button is definitely firmer and not loose at all, but just a bit taller - the volume rocker is still taller.
All in all, now I have to restock and relock the old phone, and get the new phone unlocked and loaded with Beans 10. Stupid button...

I was 2 (two!!) days out of the 30 day window, so I got the Samsung refurb. The rep told me that since the phone is so new, it will probably be a new phone anyway, and that I can always ask for another if this one is not up to the standards. The phone came with a big refurb sticker, but I sure can't tell it apart from new - not a scratch or dirt anywhere, and even the micro usb port does not seem to have been used. It has to be new, and if it isn't, then I don't care, looks new to me
Or, how I learned to not rip open phones on a messy desk.
My S2 was my first android phone, and man has it been an incredible phone. Really the only issue was some lockups with an att update, wherein I switched to ParanoidAndroid.
Unfortunately, recently the phone began having power button issues. It wouldn't wake from power presses, it would wake and work, or it would wake and suddenly restart the phone.
I figured it was the power button, so like a true fool, I got to work ripping open the phone to clean the inner guts.
Attached are a few bad pics I got. Good lord these phones get dirty as hell inside!
After spending 15 minutes cleaning the phone and the crap out of the power button, I went to re-assemble it.
When I realized that it was the volume button I was cleaning.
When I realized the power button dropped when I ripped it open.
The lesson here for me:
Open your phone as a last resort
Open your electronics in clean areas, so when you drop things...
and be careful!
I get these a lot. I can solder a new power button on for $50 including return shipping. You can email me @ seivad17 [at] msn.com if interested.
What's the problem? You just need to replace the power button. If you're not afraid of opening up your phone, then you can surely buy a cheap soldering kit and learn how to solder using youtube videos. That's what I did. You'll fix your phone and learn a very useful skill for a very, very small price.
I opened up my phone to fix the power button, and it started working, even though I didn't do much other than blowing some canned air into the area where the actual switch is. But in taking it apart, the vibrator motor got pulled off of its ribbon cable, so it doesn't work anymore. I've taken it apart a couple other times to look closer and see whether it's something I could just solder back on, or if I could buy a replacement part, but every time I open the case I get one or two new cracks in it, so I don't think I'll open it again to finish the job. I'll just live without the vibrator motor until I get a new phone.
Mine also failed recently due to the power button. It's nearly two years old, so I replaced it anyway. Think I'm going to buy a replacement power switch and see what I can do--maybe give it to a friend or something.
The strange thing is, when I pull it apart and use the phone without the actual power tab (rubber) in the slot, it will work. But not every time. So I'm thinking the button itself was being pressed too firmly while in the case/my pocket, which caused the switch itself to fail.

I had something very similar. Used it for a few days after I switched on the Volume as screen activation (on CM). Then it stopped charging. Ended up being a ribbon cable from charging port to main board was bad. Got it replaced and it's as good as new.
Mine acts strange. When I put the battery, it automatically turns on and power button doesn't work, also USB but if I push USB really hard it gets working but works too bad. I cant make factory restore because of the power button, but also the battery is replacement battery, I charged it outside of the phone with the charger and in 30 minutes dropped from 21% to 10%, even doing nothing. So is it battery problem or my charging dock needs to be replaced? battery is 2200 Mah.
I had the same problem with my Cappy. I was able to get by still because I could still get into recovery. I just downloaded an app from the Play store that allowed me to have advanced reboot option. When I wanted to turn it off I just removed the battery.
I had seen a guy use a type of cleaner for electronic equipment that he sprayed inside a few times and operated the button. He said he was able to fix the problem. I don't remember the spray though.

My power button died a few months ago and I've been using an app called "Wake Up Screen!!!" that let's me shake the phone when I want to turn it on.
It's getting a bit old, so I'm thinking of rooting it so I can map the power button to the volume button. Anyone know if I'll need to use the power button during the root process? This stuff is all new to me.
My buttons are stuck. Internally not the outer button. Could anyone assist me correcting this? I have an upgrade in two weeks and sprint won't move it up for me. =(

So your saying no matter what you do in the settings to the volume it continues to turn the volume up/down? If that is the case you can either take to a local repair shop or take the phone apart yourself to reseat the outer button as it might be off somehow causing your issue. That happened on mine after a screen repair, a secondary internal part was not placed correctly. The repair guy fixed it on the spot really quickly. Hopefully that helps???
Yeah pretty much. It's up, then down.. power button won't work when this happens.. and typically I'm getting thrown into safe mode, or RSD protocol continuously pops up during boot. So... it's frustrating. I have thought about taking it apart, but I don't want to completely destroy it. haha The repair store refused to help because they couldn't replicate the error, and phone line wants to refer me to the store.. -_-

If it happens when rebooting its probably hardware.
Turn it off remove battery try a couple DROPS rubbing alcohol on the buttons.
Blow it out wait for it to Dry, Dry.
Try it, repeat.
Good Luck.
Im sure you guys have heard it before, but I really could use some help. I just received my early bird edition, not developers and I have no idea where to start. I am not a computer guru like you guys are and could use assistance. I have my sim installed and my SD card. Few things:
How do I get the google play store?
is there a way to customize my watch at all? Seems pretty bare?
Thanks for the help

There is a sticky that is the second post in this section called [INFO] Everything.... it contains almost every bit of information regarding the TS and other x201 devices.

Hi,
I also need help. I just got my TS and downloaded the play store and started to load apps onto the watch. Everything was fine until I set the watch down to fix dinner. When I came back, it wouldn't turn on. I tried holding down both buttons thinking that may be how you can reset it...no luck. I don't want to open the back because that will ruin my warranty. Is there anything else I can do? I am not computer literate (figuring out how to sideload the play store apk was the achievement of a century for me).
I just feel so lost. I don't know who to even ask at this point...I don't think I did anything wrong to the watch. I have no clue why this happened. I just got it today.
Have you tried to charge it yet?
Also, if you haven't rooted or run the patch, really bad idea to put ANY info on it.
You can open the back without voiding anything but the water-resistance warranty. If you open the back you can pull the battery. If you pull the battery, or let it run down all the way, then try to restart your watch with a charged battery in place, it will probably work again.
It may be that your power button has slipped out of alignment or is otherwise not pushing on the switch on the main board correctly. Sometimes the main board can shift away from the external buttons. If you open your TrueSmart, you can take a look anyway.

Well here is the deal. To be honest, I have no idea how to program, load apps etc etc etc. I saw an awesome piece of technology and a great new idea but I think I am what you guys refer to as someone that needs to plug it in and it work. I have watched the videos that you have all posted and to be honest, you guys are all incredibly smart at what you do. I watch your videos and am lost immediately. Its not fair to you guys to ask a million questions so I am willing to pay for someone to help me. Please someone contact me. my email address is [email protected]

I ran into a similar problem with my power button not turning on my watch. Sigh. Did you ever solve your problem? Its hard enough that I can't even open the back of the watch as I had to take it to a local jewelry person to have him open it to put in my memory card when I first got the watch.

My 1900. omate will not power on so how do I check to make sure the min board is in contact with the power button? I can see it pushing down some metal tip when I press the power button but then what? Push it with a screwdriver or ?
With your TrueSmart back cover off but the battery still installed, can you still see where the power button is pushing against the power switch on the main board ? If so, you can push the power button and see if it hits the switch to depress it. Maybe you could also carefully slip a tool in sideways between the button and switch and attempt to depress the switch. I suggest you try with something non-conducting first, if you can reach it with the battery still installed at all.
This is just to check whether the power switch is being depressed far enough to activate the watch. Sometimes the switch has been found to not have been properly soldered to the main board or to be otherwise defective.
Make sure it still won't power on after a battery pull first, of course. I'm sure you have already tried that, but it bears repeating.

im going to try that....does the back cover has to be screwed on for the watch to be turned on?

Keeping the battery and getting at the power switch is difficult because I had to lift up a second layer to get at it. I managed to depress the button and screwed it back. I pressed the power button and nothing happened but when I plug it to my pc via cradle it kept blinking the battery symbol again and again. Not sure if that meant the battery power was low so I pulled the battery and put it back in. This time I see it flash the battery symbol once then it nothing.
Update.... it went back to flashing the battery symbol.
Update... my watch came back after switching batteries. I did depress the power button from inside before I screwed the backplate back on. I applied the ensc security patch as I used the wrong option..didn't know there was four options in the drop down menu at bottom. I was hoping for a fix butThe power button still doesn't work so I turned on the watchon app... if its working and switch the display on to 30 mins. I'm looking to apply the ensec 20140318 patch. OOPS I already did the patch.
