before I state my question, YES i tried searching around this forum for my particular problem, but I'm kinda ishy-washy on some of it- I'm one of those people who needs an answer to my exact problem so sorry!
Anyways, I have this HP Touchpad for awhile (my Aunt bought it for me when it was on a huge sale in mid November) and I kinda got pissed at it with it's lack of apps and things to do, compared to what my friend has: an iPad. So I put it in my closet, until now where I'm just craving for a tablet.
But I still have the same problem: THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO WITH IT. I have watched many videos and blogs about how people changed their touchpad to different systems and I'm interested on how to do that. First of all, which system is good for me to switch too? I do not want to switch to a system that will not benefit me at all. I am aiming for using a tablet for opening Microsoft files (Word, Powerpoint) and editing the files, playing FUN games (not that awful Robotek game), and watching videos on youtube.
So which system you recommend on me getting? And what tutorial to follow to get that system? Is there risks involved (I do not want to waste my touchpad)? How big of a risk? Should I just save up for an iPad? Also please be specific on the tutorial on what to do (Preferably a video tut or possibly have one of yall geniuses be there while I do it)
Sorry for all the questions lol I'm just about this close to throwing this tablet out of the window.
Well, there are a few things you can do with it already.
Firstly, WebOS is a nice OS. Yes, there's a lack of games for it at the moment. Yes there's a lack of other non-game apps available for it, too. That's a given. WebOS is just not as popular. HOWEVER. With it being open-sourced this year, that should change.
Secondly, the ability to install Android on your Touchpad is well documented. There's a great guide on how to do that at this link here (to RootzWiki). They are the people who put CyanogenMod 9 (Android 4, Ice Cream Sandwich) on the Touchpad. This means you have a tablet OS of Android that works, is (in my opinion) extremely stable, and can do almost anything.
For your need of YouTube, that's covered - the HD acceleration has been incorporated into Alpha2 that I linked to you. The ability to play games, there's a lot of them out there for Android, and with a little searching, you can tweak your TP to be able to download and play more of them. As for office files, if you download any of the good Office Suites (they cost anywhere from 5-25 dollars), you can do mobile office work right on your tablet. I have all three from the Amazon AppStore - Documents to Go, OfficeSuite Pro, and QuickOffice. All three offer their perks, all three have their downsides, but all three work great for what I've had to do.
If you have questions about the install, feel free to drop me a PM - I'm more than happy to help walk you through what you need to do to get ICS installed on your TP. And since I've done it many, many times, I can almost walk you through it completely in my sleep.
Hopefully that answers some of your questions, mate. If not, as I said, ask away, and I'll try and help.

Some have issues, others are fine. My problem lied with the channel my router wifi was on, after switching it to channel 1 (the most popular solution), I haven't had any wifi problems in over a month, compared to every hour or so before.

Hey again I have another question: I installed Cyan 7 Alpha 3.5 but whenever I charge it, it restarts. It also restarts when I leave it on for a while.
Is this common?

Well... it's now essentially dead... you aren't going to find much support lol. Nobody in their right mind is using CM7 still, unless you must absolutely have half-working Skype or something. Move up to CM9 bud, see if that doesn't fix things.

It'a an alpha, it's common to have problems. But why would you install a CM7 Alpha? Like that guy said, get on CM9. The camera still doesn't work, but to be honest, it wasn't really functional in CM7. Other than that, everything is MUCH better and more stable now.
If you are looking for a cheap method to work with Word documents you can use Google Docs. It is cloud storage but it will let you do the basic work on any device and then download it in Word format.
Any of the other listed apps do a great job as well. I got them all free on the Amazon App Store, they have a free app of the day. Once you get your tablet setup and in a good state look it up for freebies.
its a great tablet.

Euh i just want to say dont buy a ipad if you have a great tablet alrrady hp touchpad. Its the same size screen etc.. ipad is fun but sucks (because of no costumaziation android is and says fun) only thing i still dont like about TP is no hdmi out and no full usb host, but still better then ipad (doesnt have one of then also)
I had used webos for a long time downloaded al games for sites and afcors instaled preware i had i think about 10-15games 3d games like ashalt need for speed. Al for free. But after 2-4months it sucks and i instaled android and never rebooted webos again.
If you have CM7 Running, what you need to do is Download the CM9 files and gapps v11, then go to Clockwork recovery, wipe, flash files, and reboot. That will work beautifully. lol
If you insist on staying on CM7, then that is normal for some reason that it will boot when a charger or usb is connected (maybe even CM9). Even sometimes without it being connected, if you do a shutdown from within the OS, it will reboot and you have to select shut down from the moboot menu.
I bought an M730W about a month ago from geeks. It came with 2.3.4 on it. I searched high and low to find the ICS for it since I'd seen that the same model is out and comes with it installed. I finally contacted Geeks to see if they could get me in touch with the manufacturer. They had no contact info. Finally after digging around I noticed something with the name of the US based company that hold the patent rights to it. I then dug more and got their number and while I was on hold I found their site. At this address (mymidpad dot com forward slash Downloads_M730Flash dot html) iwas was able to obtain a good manual and the updated firmware. Inside the installer it comes with PhoenixUSBPro, an IMG file and a key. During the install it said it was installing drivers to my laptop but I can not find them when I connect my tablet. The only way that I can apply the update is to have my M730W connected to my machine in a way that it's recognized. The only way for me to do so now is to connect as a USB storage device which does me no good when it comes to using the included software and firmware for updating. So my question is, does anyone know what I can do to resolve this issue?
Hey Tod. I also have the m730w. ICS is definitely available for the tablet but theres a catch. Since its a tablet(a generic one at that) you have to use a program for your pc called Live Suite which is primarily used for the ainovo tablets but can be used with any generic tablet. I cant do it right now but most likely tonight, ill post the links and the information on how to upgrade to ics. im currently running 4.0.3 flawlessly and much faster and smoother than GB. and i have full root which i can also show you how to do. just let me know

I don't have just the rom. What I've got is the package that can be downloaded from their site. I don't have enough posts in to put an external link in my posts here. I'd try using a different browser and going to the URL I cheated into my OP. Just replace "dot" with "." and "slash" with "/". The software doesn't install the drivers properly on Vista though so you will want to be aware of that.
Any other word??? I want to update my neice's if at all possible.

I have searched this exhaustively! I still don't know what ROM to download or how to boot into recovery mode. The guy above who posted about Live Suite? Haven't heard back from him. I'm not particular about which ROM, as long as it's newer than the one on here, preferable CM7 or newer, but beggars can't be choosers emmirite??!!

LOL. Hi there. Nope. Not a damn thing have I done with mine. It is sitting on my desk. I let my son play Minecraft on it on long rides, and I use it as backup for my phones camera. I know it could be so much smoother, but is being crippled by it's OS. If I could ficgure out how to boot it into recovery I might risk bricking it with a questionable ROM. But I can't find the ROM OR the means by which to boot into recovery. In truth though, I mainly got it to patootz with. I'm more of a laptop kind of guy anyway.

If you don't know, there's no chance any of us ever will. Someone got this for free at some promotion and handed it off to me, so I'm out absolutely nothing. Just a bummer there isn't more to do with it. You'd think that all these POS tablets would just share the same mainboard and proc, so that some standard JB rom would work for all of them. The screen is terrible and it registers touches so poorly that many games are just unplayable. But, if I give it to one of my nieces or nephews, I'll be a hero!
Thanks though!

Yes you will be a hero. I'm sure there are generic ROMS that would work with this. A) I have no idea where they would be. and B) I don't know how to flash them. If I found one I suspected was close, I might try to ODIN it on there.
Try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2343531
So my friend gave me his Samsung Galaxy 5.0 (I think it's USA?) today, and I was wondering what I should do to it. I own a Nook Color and have CM7 running from an SD card, but I'm pretty sure it's different for the Player. I think I would rather not root it and would prefer a custom ROM, but I'm not sure how/which one to pick. I found JoyOS, CM7, and CM9, but I don't know which one I should get.
Unfortunately, my friend dropped it a few days ago, cracking the screen. The screen and touch screen still work, but it's cracked and annoying to work with. He never got the warranty, but is it possible to get the glass replaced?
Alright, I've managed to get CWR installed using this guide, and from there I installed JoyOS and it's working pretty well so far.

Your gonna find that a lot of the tips and insight for this particular device are hit or miss. One key thing to remember is that this device is not a phone so the temptation to leap into things may be a bit higher than with your phone (taking the root/rom route on your phone carries a higher risk, so more people that would not normally go this route are). That being said, there are some serious threads and some "not so serious" threads, good advice, and not so good advice. So use your best judgement and ask if your really not sure on something.
Now that's out of the way, your gonna find that the Gingerbread based roms on this device are all relatively stable with minimal bugs - try all of them is my recommendation! The ICS ones, some that are still in development all have some issues one way or another. This is gonna be up to you and your uses for the device to decide whether or not the bugs are ok for you. The Cyanogen based roms are pretty spectacular if their limitations work well for you.
Do research, read, read, read and you'll begin to get a general feel for what people are liking and not liking. I am a pusher of trial and error, but only if your comfortable with continually modifying your device. Flash on my friend and have fun!

Thanks for the advice! I think I like messing with this than my Nook, there's a lot more stuff to do instead of "put this image on your SD card and you're done." I finally got the market to upgrade to Play in JoyOS and replaced the boot animation, and I'm enjoying this one so far. I think I'll give LewaOS a try tomorrow.
So, does anyone know if it's possible to get a screen replacement for this? Or is it better just to get a screen protector and hope this doesn't get any worse.

Yes, you'll have to send it to the nearest Samsung Service Center.
They will replace it for you, but without a warranty you will definitely be paying out of pocket.
I can only speculate that it would cost you somewhere in the range of $75~$100.
Please, do not quote me on that figure! I am only guessing, but I can't imaging that it's a cheap fix.
Considering the obsolescence of the Galaxy Player, I'm not sure paying for a screen repair would be worth it.
Call Samsung's Service Center and get a quote.
But, if the cost of repair is more than the half of the device's value,
I would save the money and get a more technologically current device that is WIFI-only.
Stock-based ROM
I would recommend you flash a stock based ROM unless you know a lot about Android, because non stock-based ROMs have a lot of bugs.
I just received my 3rd tablet in the mail today under warranty. The first one became unresponsive to the touch screen and since it was in the Texas morning sun I thought it was my fault and bought another. The 2nd one did the same thing 4 months later even though I had taken extreme care with it, I sent this one back to the factory. I had rooted both tablets and was running versions of ICS from this site. Neither was overclocked although I do have the software to do that. I'm thinking I should stay with stock OS for a while and see if the 3rd time is the charm.
Anyone else have their tablet just mysteriously stop responding for no apparent reason? Other than the screen, everything else worked including mail and internet; I just could not unlock it to read anything.

Hi There
My touch screen stop working months ago!! I'm pretty sure it's a loose connection, If I build a fresh android from source and squeeze the top of the tab It sometimes comes back to life, I should have really sent it back but I've got a heavily modified version of adb that allows me to easily send input to it and I just plug a keyboard and mouse into a usb hub. I had another one that had "ghost touches".
I found the screen doesn't seem to like temperature changes and would get very cold to the touch If had it in my bag when travelling and really the build quality is terrible but It doesn't move off my desk as it is used only for development and I'm too lazy to send it back. meh!
With regard roms. if you were using stock rooted then the only difference between them and the stock is su, and extra busybox, everything else is as archos intended there shouldn't be anything detrimental in there. If you don't need root for anything then you might as well use stock.
--Thanks for the feedback. If someone gets Jellybean 4.1 operating for this tablet, I will root it again.
I'm on my second. Three first one had a problem worth the screen where it became greyscale soon after I started playing a youtube video. The first time it happened, I was somehow able to get it working again. The second time, I tried reloading the OS (honeycomb at the time) and resetting to factory settings and was unsuccessful.
I sent it back to QVC and got a replacement under warranty. I haven't had any problems with this one. I dropped it when getting into my car. The back came loose, but it easily snapped back into place with nothing but a few scratches on the side where it hit.

So my replacement tablet is still working well, so now I want to root it again. The latest Archos firmware makes it a *****. Would it be better to use the console and reset the tablet before rooting?

When I sent the last one back they upgraded me to a 101XS ... which has a faulty touchscreen!

I've got several Archos tablets, and overall... and oddly... I've had very few problems with any of them other that some bad firmware upgrades or a few bad apps (including some of Google's own stuff) that eventually got fixed. I guess I've been just lucky somehow with all of my G9's being older ones with only 512M RAM (which is a bit sad because I know 1G RAM would increase performance).
The MAJOR problem I've had all started when Archos released the newer 4.0.2x firmware releases. Had to find out how to install rooted stock 4.0.7 to get a usable device again.
I will agree though, that if Archos wants to being totally idiotic with their firmware and REFUSES to provide a clean way back to a previous firmware (that actually works)... well, I too will NEVER be buying any new Archos device. Only way I would buy another Archos is *IF* it was a G9 model and I was absolutely certain that it did not come shipped with firmware higher than 4.0.7. Otherwise, forget Archos completely!

I put in rooted 4.0.7 last night, than 4.0.28. Some odd things happening like games dropping out and unable to find wi-fi when moved to a different network unless I reboot the tablet. If this continues it's back to 4.07 for me.

The really sad part is that if you have ever installed ANY of the 4.0.2x official firmware is that even when trying to go back to a 'rooted' 4.0.7 there are a bunch of leftovers that just don't clear out. I've done some seriously drastic things like AFTER installing rooted stock 4.0.7 of going back with ADB and deleting several syestem/app files and the dalvick-cache... and then doing some of that a second time again. Even then though there still does seem to be some odd things left that ARE NOT part of the official Archos 4.0.7 firmware.
If you are interested send me a PM, otherwise it's really too hard to explain what I'm talking about (and might not even make sense in any reply I send you).
Anyway, as far as "I" am concerned, Archos just tried to screw up as many of the G9 tablets they could with the 4.0.2x firmware simply to try to FORCE people to buy their newer G10 tablets (which DO NOT WORK RIGHT either). Kind of the same STUPID attitude several other companies had before.... "Oh, that don't work, buy this one then".... Only real difference is THAT IDIOTIC APPROACH to marketing failed for the other companies... yet, Archos seems to 'think' they can still keep doing it.
In short, SIMPLY DO *NOT* BUY ANYTHING FROM ARCHOS! Some people wonder why most of the world hates the French, but Archos keeps giving more reasons to NOT TRUST a company based in France. The Archos G9 tablets COULD have become a world leader, but for whatever reason Archos decided they would rather kill of as many of a 'good thing' as they could just to push other even worse devices on the market... something to do with EVERYONE (mostly morons) that absolutely wanted Jelly Bean (and I'm not going to buy any new Android device with that worthless crap). So I'm not only done with Archso, but also any newer Android device... never wanted, still don't want, and never will want the crap Google is trying to turn the Android OS into.
After all, *IF* I wanted a device with a dozen apps that are constantly sending info back... well, I might just as well go with a Windows 8 device (since I know my Windows computers are already sending all kinds of feedback to Microsoft as it is, Google is trying to go BEYOND what Microsoft has already been doing for years.).
In other words... all *I* want is a device that actually works, NOT ONE THAT SPENDS ALL OF ITS TIME REPORTING EVERYTHING I DO BACK TO SOMEBODY ELSE. And don't give me any of the bogus 'anonymous' nonsense because EVERY device has a certain device number, and EVERY internet connection has an IP address. As soon as you register a device or set up an e-mail address THEY KNOW. And, Google is going FAR BEYOND what anyone should ever allow them to know about (your location, what websites you view, what your interests are, etc.).
Fingers crossed but I haven't had _any_ HW quality issues with my G9 80 8GB 1GB. I've tried most of the ROMs available and have noticed that every now and then it makes things a lot easier if I just completely format the device and re-install stock using a .aos file.

Mine is crap. Battery blew up like a capri sun pouch just after the warranty expired, archos wants $77 to fix it. I might still have the battery of my original one. Let me know if you want to try and use it. The wires are soldered, so its not plug n play.
101 g9
I got a 101 g9 and have touchscreen problems sometimes. when i get ghost inputs just recalibrate the touchscreen and when it stops working just "draw" and swipe with 4 fingers on the screen for a while. after a few seconds it comes back to usual behaviour. hope that helps others with that idiotic touchscreen...

I had planned on keeping it as a spare, but have decided if it dies on me a DNR order is in effect.
They sent me a new device
I leave here the last reclaim on the archos support
Hello, I´ve received a new device to replace the first one that I Had, all the info in RET-XXXXXXXXXXX, but the new device came with several problems:
Ram memory 465 mb !!!!???
Processor- ARMv7 Processor rev 3 (v7l)!!??? 1.2 MHz!!!!!
And a build/Fabric defect on de screen, that when you shake the device a water bubble seems to appear and ruins the image that is showing.
I do have photos of proof of all the defects, including a video with the water bubble showing when shaking.
I also sense that it is working a lot slower then the first one I had, for that went to check the real system info....and bad news came along.
Request a immediate re-change of the product, for one that has the specific system info that I paid for. 1 GB Ram, 1.5 dual core processor, Mali 400 GPU , and a screen without any defect!
Tank you
Regards
PS: I can send you the photos and videos of the problems encountered, just send me a email.
Call Tech Support immediately and tell them what you are seeing. They will run you through several tests and then send you a new unit.
I want to build a android 4.4 kernel for my iRola DX752 7" tablet (formerly known as a Kocasco M752) using Eclipse ADT etc. but I am practically a newbee at this. I figure if I brick it I am only out $50. It currently runs Android 4.2.2 with system updates that I can't count on bringing me up to more current releases, and it runs a Rockchip RK2926 Cortex-A9 CPU with 512MB RAM, 2GB internal SD and a 16GB external SD card.
I have rooted a smart phone without bricking it, but that was with a couple three premade kernels to update with and can not find any for this make or model tablet.
Tablet
Well my friend.. I can help you with that but just a single question.. Is the tablet good? No problems at all? If is good I will buy and we can make even ROMs together...
Just tell me if the tablet is good and what problems you encountered using it.:highfive:
does this thing come unlocked? How hard is it to root and is there any roms?
irola
Let me know if you make a ROM. I want to buy this tablet but it seems like it lags and its slow on the stock 4.2.2 ROM.
Very nice tablet
I purchased two for my kids and one came in the other day. I am very surprised about how well it is made. It doesn't feel like a cheap tablet. I would also be interested in a custom rom for this as well.

I ordered one for my daughter for Christmas. It is still in it's original packaging and I was lurking here to see if anyone had ideas for rooting it. From the specs it seems to have decent hardware so I am confident that it should perform well even though we haven't tried it out yet. I gave her one of my older Viewsonic tablets that's rooted and with a custom ROM. I may buy another one of these iRola tablets if I like the core stock install and then I will join you in creating some root magic for it..
im trying to install windows 8

If you are seriously thinking of rooting this hit me up we can work together. That makes 3 of us working on it. I was trying to hack it to install windows 8.
Did anyone get anywhere with this tablet? Mine came in this morning. It's a little sluggish, but I have decent hopes for it.

Has this development went any further? I'd also be happy to test or help build in any way that I can.
I just got one of these
I just got one of these for my daughter, but it has the Jellybean that has trouble with Wifi... it won't connect to my home Wifi router at all, and drops the connection regularly at work.
So, I want to get a different version of Android on this thing. Has anyone succeeded yet?
I doubt it's the hardware, as I have friends who had the same problem on their phones until they upgraded their version of Android.
I'm unfamiliar with development, but would also be happy to test. From what I can tell, this thing has a memory issue. We need to get something lighter on it.

Put me on the list of people curious about development for this device. Just picked one up as a gift for a my sister and agree it seems a little more sluggish than I thought it would. Also the screen resolution is kind of poor and was hoping that maybe changing the DPI could help if it were rooted.
i haven't received mine
I order mine back on Nov 22, I haven't received it. I've been itching to root this. Ugh come on N MR send me my tablet. Has anyone have problems with NMR shipping before. ????
Just got mine. It's so sluggish...
I don't understand how, even after a factory reset, this thing is ridiculously slow. I have googled and googled but I can't find any information on how to root this device or even if it's possible yet. I really wanna downgrade the software to something it's more comfortable running. Maybe 4.0.4?
If you haven't received your tablet I implor that you contact NMR ASAP. They didn't send my fiances mothers 3 irola 7" tablets ordered later Nov. until yesterday Dec. 23.
I will also be working on this tablet as I just got it as a present from her So make that 4.
I also just bought this tablet (irola dx752) running android 4.2.2. I have never had a tablet before but it does not seem slow or laggy. I am familiar with linux (someone asked that earlier in this thread) and I am interested in getting into android development. Also happy to test (not intending to brick of course).
