Every day i wake up to my phones built in alarm clock. i usually check the weather once a day with it. i get on facebook/twitter. when i go to the gym i use the key card app to sign in. then use my phone as mp3 player. IM constantly shazamming new songs, then downloading them. i also check my checking account daily with it. if i need to take a pic, its there. constantly using the maps as GPS.
basically what IM saying is i use my phone for everything in my life now, and still feel like there is more i could be using it for. Just wondering what some other people are constantly using there phone for besides the basic phone usage.
I use mine to check and respond to all of my emails. Check my bank accounts, transfer money if I need to. Schedule classes for college. I bought a bluetooth keyboard that I use to type some of my papers on. I sketch some of my designs for stuff I want to make.
However, I still feel that sometimes I spend too much time modding it to make it the "coolest" or most aesthetically pleasing phone, that I never get the chance to actually use it the most of its abilities. I feel you on this one OP.

i also just bought a pebble watch to pair it with, i also seen the other night on shark tank where i will be able to buy my dead bolt for my house with bluetooth enabled locking. where when i walk up to my house with my phone it will automatically unlock.
I am always looking for ways of using my phone for more and more. And why not, we should all be doing it. It makes sense right? We have forked over a considerable amount of money for this phone, whether in the form of green cash or by signing a contract and paying for it over the months to come. Folks have worked hard, many for no other reward then to make a successful free app. They have toiled to make our device into soo many things. Life would go on without my phone, but it would change drastically.
Alarm wakes me up.
I check the weather.
I browse through emails picking out important ones.
(all before getting out of bed)
I dock it in bathroom and listen to news in the shower
I look up whats on the menu for this morning at the cafeteria at my work to decide if I want that or something from home.
I listen to slacker on my drive to work
No signal at my desk, so I listen to music on and off at work
I use it for its calender to keep tabs on things
When I am up and out of the office, I use it to assist in wireless scans.
I use it for work email when not at my desk.
I keep an eye on it for folks broadcasting private hotspots (prohibited at my work)
I go outside at lunch to the outdoor eatery and browse FB, multiple forums via tapatalk, and so on.
After I get off, I walk do to the gym for a workout before leaving. there I use it for music and tracking my workouts.
Afterwards, I call the wife on my way across the parkinglot to see how her day went.
Get in truck, some more FB for a few minutes, then slacker as I head to pick up kids.
If I'm feeling creative, I have apps that help me pick whats for dinner and how to cook it.
I then goof around on forums on and off through the night and read a plethora of aricles I've been meaning to catch up on with Pocket (formerly read it later)
Kids want to watch some cartoon, why look for remote, I have google TV Revue box, will use the remote app.
On top of all that dailey use stuff I also:
Take hundreds of pictures a week
Read ebooks/PDFs
Practice for tech exams with test sims and "studyblue"
Watch movies while traveling or waiting on appointments
Use the flashlight feature (awesome easy on King Kang)
Remote access to my home server for music, movies, pictures, and other files
Kick off torrents to my home machine remotely
Remote view home security cameras
Use "MyTracks" to map my weekend hikes and cycling
Oh and lets not forget the hours of Temple Run and other games while in the bathroom.

However, the iPad I have...now that is pretty much just an e-book reader. Explains why I'll be listing it on eBay shortly!
I have a couple app suggestions to get more use:
Llama - to automate your phone for example when I connect my headphones the music player opens and volume turns up, when I disconnect them the volume goes down
Super video- allows you to do the pop up videos like on the gs3 so you can do other things while watching a video (great for listening to music videos
Go sms pro - really cleans up the messaging interface much better than stock
Also if your running out of battery, I bought 3 batteries and a charger for like 15 bucks

Drawl something, screen shot then edit, and one or two other things. It's a nice to have when needed feature, but I really havnt come to rely on it yet. Perhaps I need to play with it a little more.
s-pen is good for people to sign a receipt(square or intuit) looks more like real signiture then using finger so they cant say it was forged. and just seems more profesional then signing with your finger

- google apps that sync everything, all my docs and media sync all on the cloud between my home pc, work pc, and device (google drive, picasa, google chrome/bookmarks, google music etc)
- apps for controlling my directv receiver and samsung tv, no need to track down the remote (that drives me crazy). since my device never leaves my hands.. problem solved!! hahah
ps there is also an app called tvcallnotify that pops up a screen on the tv when i get a phone call/text , and directv app, i schedule recordings if i need to
- public and private media serving, watching videos on my note from my home pc using orb (public) and serviio (private/home). then installing android apps skifta and/or orb live. (used to be able to stream tv to my pc and watch on my note, but orb live on ics doesnt work yet)
- pocketcloud so i can remote into my pc's when i need to access something from my phone (RDP or VNC)
- nintendo emulator gaming (yes super mario bros) and random play store games
- other hackerville stuff, u know root, roms, flashing, tweaks, etc cant forget that hobby
- AND THE BEST THING EVER "WATCHESPN" app. you need time warner for this so guess im lucky.
i know im missing some stuff, but thats the jist of it...
if it's a techie thing, i try to find ways to do it on my phone... so i guess id like to say that i try to use my phone to its full potential... :silly:
I still run servio on my server but have switched to Plex primarily, you should try it if you havnt. Seemed a lot more useful.

I'll take a shot at this. This is not any any particular order. Just the order that it popped up in my head as i thought about this.
1. Google Music (free) - google music is one of the handiest apps that I have. I'm able to access all 15,000+ songs in my library remotely, and my computer doesn't have to be on. I used an app called subsonic before, but it required you to run your computer as a server which meant your computer had to be on. With Google music, you upload it to their servers once, and then you can access your music from any mobile device/computer. the downside of this service, though, is that it takes a long long long time to upload. perhaps it got better since i first used it but just know that it'll take a few days to upload anything if you have a large library of music
2. Pandora (free) - If you ever get bored of your own music and you're looking for new artists, pandora is great. I'm sure you already know about this service and everything they do already, but one of the things I really like about pandora is that the sound quality of their songs are pretty great. sounds good when i'm biking with my headphones on or if I plug it in the auxiliary. I always catch myself being impressed with the quality.
3. Power Amp ($5) - my last recommendation having to do with music. This is a great music player with lots of customization and sound control. You can't go wrong with buying this app. I especially enjoy the ability to fade in and fade out of songs when i'm skipping through them. pay for it and support the devs that put the time into this app because he definitely deserves it. free trial is also available.
4. Netflix (free with subscription) - Why wouldn't you get this if you already have a netflix instant account. free app plus you get the entire netflix library from wherever you are. I've been having some A/V sync issues with it lately but i haven't tested the new update. I'm sure they'll get it all straightened out in time. I have definitely been waiting for this app for quite some time and I'm just really thankful we have it now.
5. DoggCatcher ($7) - This is a bit pricey but if you listen to a lot of podcasts, this is the best app by far. keeps everything very neat and organized. does a lot of cool automatic stuff like only downloading podcasts when you're on wifi, or when you're on wifi and charging. This also supports Presto ($4) which allows you to listen to podcasts at variable speeds.
6. Amazon appstore for Android (free) - You can't get this on the market but just google it and get it on your phone because they give you a free app everyday. it's like woot for apps on your phone but it's free. the free apps can be very crappy or very good. Another plus is that all app purchases, free or paid, are linked to your amazon account so you own them forever.
7. Paypal app (free) - My friends and I always cover each other for food and expenses and this app makes it easy to pay each other back. Requires you to have a paypal account linked to you checking account but as good as cash itself. BTW, make sure you link it to your checking account and not your credit card or else you will get transaction fees. no fees when you use your checking. Also, the app comes with a bill splitter so you can easily split bills, even if it's not split evenly.
8. Handscent (free) - I use this app over the default texting app with the metallic theme. Looks nice and you can also do a lot of customization. my favorite thing is the quick reply texting feature.
9. Alarm Clock Plus (free with ads. $2 ad free) - alarm clock that's a lot like other alarm clocks in the market but i like that when it goes off, you can change the snooze timer right after you hit it instead of setting the snooze before you sleep. sometimes, i just want 10 more minutes of sleep.
10. Thumbkeyboard (one of amazon's free apps but about $3 on the market) - keyboard is really based on your preference but i like some of the layouts for this keyboard. It was weird at first but i found myself typing really fast using the "split - Compact layout" with a lot less spelling errors and autocorrect errors"
1) ES File Explorer
Allows easy access to every file on your phone as well as access to LAN connected computers to easily transfer files over WIFI. Does everything you'd want a file explorer to do including everything Root Explorer does.
2) Ringo Lite (or Pro)
Allows you to change not only the ringtone for individual contacts, but also the SMS notification sound for contacts as well. Many different apps do the former, but this app is the only one I know of that can do the latter.
3) Voodoo Control (or Plus)
Tweaks the sound system on Galaxy S phones to be more on par with a true audiophile experience. Allows crystal clear headphone amplification far beyond the phones meek default levels. Under MIUI/CM7, also controls the color settings for the screen allowing black and white level tweaking and color balancing. If your kernel doesn't support it, the plus version will give you access anyway.
4) SetCPU
Voltage tweaking program that has allows for the creation of profiles. Common profiles are screen off or low battery settings that reduce CPU levels to conserve battery. Works well for undervolting and overclocking the CPU as well as changing around the governors. See my signature for my own personal settings after hours of tweaking.
5) Stopwatch & Timer
Self explanatory, simple program.
6) Swiftkey X (paid app, price varies in the $2 to $3 range)
Keyboard that not only predicts the current word with great accuracy, but the more you use it, the more often it correctly predicts the next word, and the word after that. After a month or two of use it will frequently predict entire sentences correctly beginning from only a couple letters. An excellent keyboard for those who prefer being correct over being lightning fast.

I'll add one, almost, guilty pleasure app: TV Listings. I don't watch much tv, but when I do, I check out the listings here instead of my cable box.
While I like and have most of these, they are mostly "tweaker" apps (no pun intended). What about some fun apps? Games, videos, themers...
One of the apps that isn't in the above list that I have is Moboplayer. It is an HD video player that has decent GUI but great video res and playback. My video player of choice.
Another one is ZipThemer. It lets you take downloaded metamorphs and cluster whatever grouping you want and packages it into a nice clean single update.zip. It also creates an undo.zip in case what you made doesn't turn out like you thought it would. I've used it on other phones and it works on vibrant too. Can piecemeal your own theme by taking pngs and xmls from others and creating your own customization.

I expect to get my Tab this week. Almost a year ago I remember a buddy of mine in Charleston with his iPad using it as a way of selecting method to play on his stereo. He was using the air sync (believe that is what they call it)... so it was really nice not having it wired or using an aux-input.
Is there an equivalent for the Tab? Are you guys just using Voodoo Sound and an aux-input? Would love to be wireless.
EDIT, looks like Sonos has a product called the "Connect" that I could add to my existing stereo.. they also have an android app to control it. Problem is, $350. Hell no. Others?

I use my tab more for remote work.
Besides email I use to connect my remote computer for many things are complex to do with a tab, but sorry, including print, but in general again for work.
If you have a Samsung TV, u can use the app Samsung Remote to control your tv
i use jefit and track my workouts - though you can use just about any of the workout apps. also use pandora while i'm working out.
and i watch netflix while running on the treadmill. helps me not think of my legs burning.
and comic and book reading.

I suppose you are speaking of the 10.1 version? Oh nevermind, it doesn't really matter actually.
I use mine for;
University stuff e.g. slide shows from the teachers, reading Google docs we made in groupwork even though it's not so good at live updating Google Docs yet as if your on a laptor writing in Chrome.
Reading e-books, which is really nice if the uploader of the .pdf file has done a good job!

Browsing the internet (it's nice on the Tab since it's much lighter than a laptop, has longer battery life and a bigger screen than the smartphone)

Picture-presenter - e.g. I use it to show people pictures from my Picasa web-albums. I only costs like 5$ for a years storage of 20gb, so pretty cheap and now I have all of my photos and videos online on Picasa.
Listen to music - via Spotify
I think that's primarily what I use my Tab for
Btw, I also bought a converter to HDMI, but I'm not quite satisfied with it. It only supports HDMI while the charger is plugged in, no matter how many percentage of power you have on your tablet, and the screen also flickers on the TV. I know this is a software problem though, so with ICS I expect it to work better.

As soon as you get it don't bother rooting, just flash cwm and the install Task's latest rom. Then you will have root, pershoot's kernal, (the best ) and the smoothest running tab you can get, then you can think of what else you want on it

Yep mine was running a custom rom within 25 minutes of coming out the box lol. I would definitely go for Task650's latest rom though

Here, I have EDGE only, but at home with 3G/H or wifi, Skype is marvellous.
But also listen music and I love music.google (you can upload up to 20 000 songs, then you can listen them all over the word).
I'm disapointing with HD movies, I've tried a 720, !... But classic divX are OK.
The size and weight make it that I can carry my tablet everywhere and do everything I want!
By the way, since I have it, I drastically optimize the battery life of my phone (SGS2)!

But with the tablet, I didn't need maps, I didn't need a gps. I didn't need books. I didn't need to bring crossword puzzles to work on in the tent... So it did save almost as much weight as it cost. And then again, when the mosquitos came out at sundown, we watched movies.
That was inconceivable to me five years ago. Now I don't go without my tab.

You can use one of the maps that don't require an internet connection (you download the maps on your sd card, then you only need gps). Personally, I use sygic

Go to a fancy bar, put the tab on the table then ignore it and act really posh (ie. imagine you're a stereotypical Apple user with an iPad 2)
So I've recently swapped over from an Ipod Touch 3 to a Samsung Galaxy Player 5. There are things I love and things I hate about my new device, since I used my Ipod touch primarily as a smartphone whenever it was on wifi. Here are some of my observations and things I've found along the way that might help people make the switch:
~~ VOIP Calling ~~
I've tried several of the VOIP apps (gtalk, grooveip, etc) and they all share a common problem: there is a large delay on the line. When I had my ipod touch, I used to use an app called Talkatone and it worked beautifully with no delay whatsoever. Turns out, you can get it on android (although not through the market). Had to really dig to find this one, but boy is it worth it!The app is incredible and works out of the box with no configuration. No delay at all, no echo, each party can hear the other without a problem. And it's free (for now)!
RECOMMENDATION: Talkatone (google: "talkatone apk" and find the link to the official site. Sry I can't post the link )
~~ Texting ~~
Use the official google voice app for now and throw a widget on your home screen. I got so spoiled by bitesms/google voice integration on my ipod, but for now this is about as good as it gets. Eventually, chompsms or some competitor will integrate google voice so you can quick-reply to texts without leaving the app you're in. They say it's in the works, so keep your fingers crossed!

Using lockinfo on my ipod really spoiled me as far as keeping track of my upcoming events goes, but android gives us a similarly simple solution in the form of Pure Grid Calendar Widget. Toss a 4x4 XL widget on your homescreen and have fun never opening your calendar app again

Coming off of itunes is tough, as I'm sure you all know. I decided to use windows media player on my desktop to sync my music, since it allows easy syncing to external SD (important, since I have more than 8GB of music) and is easy to use, despite being ugly and clunky. To listen to music on my computer, I'll be using Zune (soooo much better than itunes!), since playlists and ratings should sync right over to windows media player and therefore, my android. Still playing around with this, though. Will update as time goes on.

Use ES File Explorer. Don't ask questions. Just do it. When/if you decide to root, it gets better. Before you root, it lets you change file extensions (stock does not). It's also free with no ads.

I'm personally really liking Swype, but it does take up a lot of memory and the keys are very small in portrait when typing things you can't swype (usernames, passwords, email addresses, slang, etc). Not sold on this, but definitely better than stock.

Hi,
No, I haven't noticed any lag using Sipdroid+GV+pbxes.com on my SGP5. The only thing I've found is that I think it won't go into speakerphone mode on the SGP5. Works fine holding the SGP5 up to your ear, like a "real" phone .
I haven't tried it with the earbuds (suppose to have a mic on them already) or with a Bluetooth headset yet.
FYI, I downloaded the talkatone APK. It installed ok on my SGP5, and at first I couldn't call out. But I changed the compression to "none WIFI" and I think it worked ok after that.
However, whenever I pressed the "Speakerphone" icon, the talkatone app would FC, so it looks like they have some work to do (I know it's an "alpha"). I've uninstalled it from my SGP5 for now, since Sipdroid seems to work ok, plus the talkatone app puts up a ton of ads while it's running (like a new ad every couple of seconds?).

edit: Trying Talkatone, not nearly as good UI as GrooveIP (no access to Google favorites, no contact pix), does seem to make calls fine. Speakerphone crashes app. Sticking with GrooveIP for now, until they officially release this thing.
I had Boat Mini as my browser for a year on my phone, but jus switched to Dolphin HD on my 5.0, very nice, especially the RSS section (Webzine). I have now eliminated Pulse because of it.
I really like the built in calendar, use Smooth Calendar Widget with it.

Had to really dig to find this one, but boy is it worth it!The app is incredible and works out of the box with no configuration. Use the official google voice app for now and throw a widget on your home screen. I got so spoiled by bitesms/google voice integration on my ipod, but for now this is about as good as it gets. Eventually, chompsms or some competitor will integrate google voice so you can quick-reply to texts without leaving the app you're in. They say it's in the works, so keep your fingers crossed!

Using lockinfo on my ipod really spoiled me as far as keeping track of my upcoming events goes, but android gives us a similarly simple solution in the form of Pure Grid Calendar Widget. Toss a 4x4 XL widget on your homescreen and have fun never opening your calendar app again

Coming off of itunes is tough, as I'm sure you all know. I decided to use windows media player on my desktop to sync my music, since it allows easy syncing to external SD (important, since I have more than 8GB of music) and is easy to use, despite being ugly and clunky. To listen to music on my computer, I'll be using Zune (soooo much better than itunes!), since playlists and ratings should sync right over to windows media player and therefore, my android. Still playing around with this, though. Will update as time goes on.

Use ES File Explorer. Don't ask questions. Just do it. When/if you decide to root, it gets better. Before you root, it lets you change file extensions (stock does not). It's also free with no ads.

I'm personally really liking Swype, but it does take up a lot of memory and the keys are very small in portrait when typing things you can't swype (usernames, passwords, email addresses, slang, etc). Not sold on this, but definitely better than stock.

I personally use Google Voice for texting, and Firefox for browsing. The new release is pretty slick.
First, I think we need separate threads for some of these since there could probably be entire discussions on each. Just a thought. And thanks to Bruno for starting this one.
I've just installed groove IP and tried it out a little. There is a lag plus folks on the other end report bad call quality. I have not played with the settings at all yet. Hope to do that tonight. I'll look at Talkatone once it hits beta or so. Going to look into Jim's solution tonight too as that sounds interesting.
If there are any folks who have been through the Groove IP setup on the YP-G70 already I'd appreciate hearing how your settings ended up!!
My Groove settings:
Audio settings: Echo nothing, Speaker "0", MG -6
Troubleshooting: KSO check, AP check, SV check, HiPerfWifiLock check
All others not checked or default. I don't talk much, but it seems to work. There is a number you can call that repeats back what you say so you can keep testing different settings: 909-390-0003

If you're willing to give up the cloud-acceleration try Opera Mobile instead of Mini: it has good compatibility and Flash support, while still being pretty fast, so it doesn't lose any features from the default browser, making it an excellent alternative.

Hey, just an update on this a few months later: Returned the galaxy player and got myself an optimus V from Virgin Mobile and WOW. Having internet everywhere was awesome Then I upgraded to a Triumph, and soon I'll be on Straight Talk (AT&T) using a Droid Razr. I traded my Ipod Touch straight up for the Triumph and it was basically brand new. Also, don't even want to tell you how cheap the razr was. Craigslist rocks. After playing with true phones, I can't honestly recommend the galaxy player 5 to anyone. It's simply too much money. You could pay a little more and get a galaxy nexus, which blows the player 5 out of the water in terms of specs, and if you decide you want a data plan, you can buy a sim card from straight talk and just use it for that, no monkeying around with voip apps. It costs more, but it is absolutely worth every penny, imo.

Is there an app for international calling? From outside US or Canada to outside.
I did the opposite, went from an Optimus-V to the Player5.0, and use my V only about once per month. Now there are rumors that HTC 3D is coming to VM, if so I'll buy it. I don't like carrying 2 devices, and having data 24/7 is a big plus. I do have wifi at home and work, so the Galaxy is really all I need. GrooveIP works for me 90% of the time (since I get no cell signal at home, it's a must). But the 4.3" screen of the HTC at a much higher resolution will cause me to get rid of this wonderful Player to help pay for the HTC.... my grandfathered $25 unlimited is a deal that's hard to get rid of.

@tcat007 Another solution that might help would be to try either Wifi Ruler or WiFi Jumper apps. These apps make your YP-G70 auto-connect to the nearest best wifi signal without any interaction just like a cell phone auto connects to the nearest cell tower.
Haven't tried them extensively yet but I'm thinking they will help bridge the gap between wifi phone and cell phone.
gVoice works best for me. no setup to do
After trying all the apps in this thread, I've found SIPdroid+pbxes works best for me. Audio delay is the smallest out of all of them, even though the interface isn't as pretty.

Im still working to save money for mine.. rather then just stealing someone elses like a lot of others i been hearing about It's gonna run me $500 + tax since I have metro with no contract but I love them and have had awesome service on all ends but im close ha! But anyway I plan to use mine as a just under 5" tablet/phone

although I use Zoom FX every now and then, I am having a very good experience and excellent results with the stock camera app. I've found out that - just like every good point-and-shoot camera - changing the settings of the camera for suitable values (scene, lighting, focus, etc) gives you excellent results, much better than any other app can give you.
Another fun camera app is "Paper Camera". It does have some neat effects, but it is for fun only.
For editing the images I still like Photoshop better! There's no way editing an image in a cell phone can beat using Photoshop on a 27" IPS LCD display.

Wow that is a lot, wasn't a big fan of hunger games film.
I've not tried Skype and not sure how you do the network analysis or WiFi killing and not heard of Dilbert or Dogbert or legends of tribunal or what quetube is.
I'm not a big fan of dropbox as I can't save folders there don't know how, it just gave me options of files or photos music or videos.

Ok, I wouldn't call myself a fanboy but I'm pretty in to the Samsung ecosystem. Note 2, 3, 4. Original Galaxy Gear, Tv's and now the Gear S. Coming from the O.G. Galaxy gear, I thought the Gear S was a worthy upgrade. Water resistance, bigger and brighter screen. I have been very patient with Samsung and them rolling out apps to there watches. The Galaxy Gear never really got the apps I wanted unless I hacked it and cracked it with android apps made for phones. That kind of held me down for a bit. Then it just got too cumbersome for a watch. Especially with Nova Launcher and the battery drain was horrible because it just wasn't optimized to run like a phone. Here comes the Gear S, to solve all our problems. It just seems like the same old crap to me. Don't get me wrong, I really like the watch. For notifications and an occasional news feed it works awesome. Even the pedometer and the fitness functions seem to work better. But with the looming release of the Apple Watch I have to ask. Where the hell are the apps?!! I'm already hearing about all the different apps and developers working on the Apple Watch apps. I have a feeling its going to be another lopsided battle like it used to be with Android and Apple in the appstore a few years back. But why?! Samsung has had, damn near, a 2 year head-start in this category. You mean to tell me after releasing 5-6 Smart watches that they still cant conjure up any app support? I see the same old half baked apps in the app store everyday. No popular apps like facebook, youtube, instagram (there is a fake one that might be ok). It just seems as though samsung doesn't follow all the way through.
I know they are working on the next big thing, but I feel like we have all been left in the dark by buying another Samsung experiment. Its not fun being the guinea pig anymore.
Have a look down the back of the sofa... you'll be amazed what you can find there.
It's a watch, with the addition of gear notification extender installed I'm struggling to think of anything more I need/want it to do. My note 4 is superior in every way so the watch is just for a glance or a response on the fly.

If I receive a notification that a friend posted something on facebook, I want to see what they posted. If they uploaded a picture, I want to see that too.
I want to respond to what's app messages and not just receive them!
I do love the smartthings app that let's me turn on/off lights from my wrist, that is awesome !
Google is working on iOS compatibility for android wear devices, I so wished the Gear S could be fully compatible with my work iPhone6 and my Note 3... Sort of have the Gear become the hub manager for all my devices...

Basic Video Player, load videos to your Gear through PC to play on app
Wearable Widgets, I can use it to control my lights at home that on on my WeMo switches, using WeMo widgets; I can see my outside surveillance cameras using the IP Cam Viewer Basic widget
IPCameraViewer, I can see my indoor home surveillance camera feed through Gear S app
OperaMini for web browsing
Milk music for streaming to my bluetooth headset at the gym, without having to carry my phone.
S Health, I have used very well to track and motivate myself to move and exercise more. I lost 85 lbs. last year and it gets some credit. Program finally much better than it was.
I too hope they push for more, but in the end it will be up the the other companies and developers and they will probably go to Apple due to shear volume of sales alone.

I agree with the original post. The watch falls short of its potential. I generally use my phone for most types of communication. There are times, like in my car, when grabbing a phone is impractical. This is particularly true if my wife calls and reminds me of something I need to do in the future. With my Gear 1 I could double press and add a calendar reminder, no problem. I could controll Pandora which was great with a headset in my Miata with the top down. Cousin Sammy is trying to make Tizen into their version of i-something and they are losing sight of the consumer. Stop giving me watch faces and give me some interaction with my phone apps. That would fulfil my interpretation of their promise when I bought it as a companion device. Sammy watch should work well with a Sammy phone.

This is off topic, but how did you control Pandora on your Gear 1?
On the stock setup, I turned on Pandora via my phone and put it away. The music control on the watch would control volume and I could skip songs. Couldn't change favorites but it worked OK otherwise.

The Gear S is an impressive hardware masterpiece that the only thing it needs are fancy apps.
Klokker is an information safe repository especially designed for Samsung Gear S smartwatches.
You can store in your Gear S valuable information sometimes difficult to remember like your car insurance number, your passport number, your VISA card number or your bank account number. This information is protected under a password or passcode to avoid non-authorized access.
I really like my Gear S and I'm working very hard on several ideas to bring new apps to this smartwatch. I'm not only working hard, I'm working with illusion. I'm posting this announcement here because I know I will receive feedback about my work. I want to make the Gear S something really useful in our lives, something that can help us or solve some of our daily life problems.
I'm focused primarily on standalone applications. Companion apps are cool, but I wanna make the Gear S as much independent as I can. In fact, the Gear S is the most independent smartwatch of all. So I'm not following a wrong approach right now.

Don't know that I need such an app. But I love your standalone way of thinking. I see no reason why I should need a companion app.

The main reason why we need a companion app is that the smartwatch is a very limited computing platform so far: reduced screen, no keyboard (the Gear S is a big exception to the rule with the Fleksy keyboard and its 2" screen), tiny speakers, few memory and limited storage in general.
In a companion mode, the main app processes information on the smartphone using its power and connectivity capabilities (again the Gear S is another exception to the rule with BlueTooth, 3G, Wi-Fi and USB). The smartwatch app only displays information or performs some interaction with the user.
The Companion design is very useful for many apps where the smartwatch lacks of the power or interaction needed. But it drains battery at the same time to the watch and to the phone. The Wi-Fi connection is better in saving power especially in idle mode. You are lucky again if you have a Gear S and you can synchronize your smartwatch via Wi-Fi!
Because, the Gear S exhibits a tremendous autonomy as a computer platform, I choose it for my future standalone apps!

Agree with needing stand-alone apps. Can you create an audiobook app with bookmarking and 15 second forward/backward skip functionality? I go running with my Gear S and gave up on trying to listen to audiobook because I keep losing my place in the books
I also agree with OP? The app store is a big let-down.

Create that app is not a big problem for me. But before starting a new app project, I would like to ask if there is no any other music or audiobook player on the Samsung Gear Apps with bookmarking and 15 forward/backward skip functionality.
The idea is not bad. Something simple, useful, easy to use.

Do you copy your audiobooks in a particular folder or just in the music folder?
Which average size your audiobooks are?
Are your audiobooks in mp3 format?

There is not one audiobook app in the app store, and other Gear S owners have asked for the same type of app, with the addition of sleep timer functionality within the app.
My books are all MP3 (between 7-14 files per book) that I copy into the music folder. Since each file is around 50 mins long, bookmarking and skipping back and forth is imperative. The app would need to know to play back files within a subdirectory as one book.
I tried to use the regular music app, but gave up, because I kept losing my place in the books
