SECOND LIFE & OPEN SIM IN FULL 3D (android only) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Lumiya app is a new Second Life app on Google play. The difference between this app and previous SL clients is that it provides complete 3d graphical immersion. I was skeptical since SL is a NOTORIOUS GRAPHICS HOG. But the app was only about $3.00, the reviews were impressive, and I wanted to stress test this big ole gnotes cpus and ginormous screen. The short - it works. The gnote chewed up the graphics without so much as a sputter. I'm not saying that you should run out and buy the app. It still has bugs, for example, I was unable to move my avatar through the scene during my initial test. That said, the developer seems to be very active and given the software miracle accomplished so far I consider the $3.00 well spent... So if you feel like puttering around SL on your gnote or you just want to feed your Iphone friends growing since of inferiority (I guess the ios platform isn't yet "fragmented" enough for non apple innovation ) then check it out.
*Hey I'm just joking about the ios thing, I mean it is true; thats what makes it funny, but that doesn't mean it's okay to kick an iphanatic when he's down; it's just not cool.

Agreed, assuming the "?" was short for "people still play Second Life?"

That's probably a reasonable assumption, with regards to the "?"
But, I can say, it makes a great talking point when discussing phone capabilities with either blackberry or ios users. You see, they don't know they don't want SL, all they know is that they can't have it.
All joking aside, what I find impressive is that I can run "gaming" software on my...android phone, that will choke and kill an old Laptop from just a few years back.
I enjoy synthetic benchmarks as much as anyone. But this is a (however limited) real world application that tells the tale of how far this tech has come.

Returned the Note :-/

Headed out on vacation for the next week, so had to make a decision before my 30 day window was up.
Basically, I went with a larger screen for media related reasons (video, images etc), and the black-crush issue became a deal breaker for now. I think I'll sit on my crappy old iphone 3g for another month or so and revisit the Note or perhaps the the HTC onex. Hopefully the note will see ICS before too long and it'll fix some of the graphics issue i've been noticing.
That being said, I've got a couple cases that I will no longer need, they can be viewed in my review post of them in the review section. If you'd like them let me know...i'd accept cost of shipping plus beer money

I thought the same thing when I saw this. That would be a trend I'd never support. Batteries get weaker with time and it would be very inconvenient to send it off to be replaced. I hope this is just a rumor.

OP & XDA Members:
I don't know if you'd even consider an unsubsidized device. But if you would, the international Note (GT-N7000) is a big improvement over the AT&T Note. This is an educated personal testimony, as I have owned both devices. As for battery issues (and this applies to both the N7000 & the I717), 99% of the issues I've encountered have been caused by software. Google Maps, certain kernels, and certain root-enabled apps can cause perpetual, long-lasting wakelocks when the device should be in deep sleep. This seriously impacts battery life. However, once these issues are addressed, the Note finds it's battery life on par with the iPhone 4 & iPhone 4S.
I'm not trying to get into an Exynos versus Snapdragon debate. I'm simply making observations about the two devices' respective benchmark results, and their real-world everyday performance. Whether these differences are a result of the change in SoC, or something else entirely, is a discussion best had in another thread. For the purposes of this thread though, the international Note would serve you much better, and offers a much larger development community (for the moment; anything can change).
As far as the One X is concerned, it's another prime example of AT&T neutering a device to ensure LTE compatibility. If you think this is an acceptable trade-off because the altered device allows you to connect to AT&T's LTE network, consider this. AT&T doesn't care if you get 40Mbps or 1Mbps downstream. Their goal is to get devices off of their congested HSPA(+) network and onto their LTE network. In the process, they can tout it as a major upgrade designed to give YOU better service. The truth is that this "upgrade" wasn't a decision made to compete with big red; it was a necessary move to relieve the stress on their HSPA(+) network before it collapsed.
So, next time you go shopping for a phone to use with good ole' Ma Bell, consider what the device can do for YOU... not them.
Thank you,
Ed

No one phone is perfect, I hace owned more than 20 phones In the past few years and every phone I have had all have had drawbacks. What would be the incentive for a carrier to put out a perfect device when they rely on the revenue from phone sales? And everyone is different so everyone has there on perception of what perfect is. Me I couldnt have an Iphone as my daily driver because for one the screen is too tiny and two the iphone makes simple things much harder like creating a ringtone. But what I like about the Iphone is the many apps it has that Andriod still doesnt like Family fued.

Good post. I own both and am keeping both. They have different strengths, one is updates and unlocked the other get access to the LTE network which is excellent in the area where I live. One other thing is you get 5GB on the LTE unlimited plan for $30 opposed to 3GB on the HSPA plan before throttling. I have not seen any battery issues on either.
I really like the looks and specs of the HTC One XL but no SD crd and the battery thing bother me. I think it is 16GB or it 32GB internal memory? I just do not get that...Just my .02 cents.

Really? Do you even own one? Maybe you just don't know how to use it. My note works just fine with Gingerbread. It will probably be better with ICS, but it's not a joke without it. Considering the fact that we'll have ICS within the next few months, it's hardly a deal breaker even if you somehow can't stand to use the phone without the newest version of Android.

Maybe a great marketing idea?

Yes this may never work, but currently at the end of my shift at work, and I started thinking what would really show people what's going on behind the scenes with Apple suing HTC and Samsung. And this is the idea that I came up with, with the idea that it probably would never work, but hey its just a thought lol.
We've seen HTC comparing itself to Samsungs GSIII, just trying to compare itself. What if HTC and Samsung did it together with Google as the head supporter of Android, with a headline of something around, "Apple's run scared, attempting to ban these phones from you." Or "Meet the phones that Apple is terrified off..." Something in that sense to stir up curiousity and interest in. And on my mind, YMMV, I picture the OG EVO commercials with the Andrioids flying around the phone and showing it off with quotes from reviews.
But in the end, a for more info go to here, to show the potential customer what is going on since none of Apple's lawsuits are very big in the news unfortunately.
Obviously HTC and Sammy fans don't get along too well, but the Android OEMS seriously need to stick together for some time if they're ever going to have a chance if Apple keeps chipping away at them with court.
Reminder, this is just my personal opinion, but please share what you think of it. Or what you would add / change because I'm curious of this would ever be a true way to really give Apple some SERIOUSLY BAD PR, or if I'm just some nut case, who needs to get a job with daytime hours lol.

Apple will always have their hardcore followers. No matter how much better my EVO LTE is the hardcore apple-ites will say Apple has better blah blah blah. And they will inevitably say "that's the phone that violated all the apple patents!" *snarl/*
Anyways, I like your idea. Don't think it's gonna happen though.
You know the iPhone's use of google maps generates 40% of Google's income? And now that Apple is deciding to make its own map app to replace Google maps as the default in iPhone it seems like an all out break in the companies.
Apple isn't innovating anymore, all they're doing is filing stupid patents and suing. They'll probably win because they are on top and have the $ to pay lawyers where other companies don't.
Sorry about the rant, I usually post on android central. Come here to check out the mods and roms so I don't post much.

I don't know what the percentage is but I bet it's a good amount, much more than 2% but no where near 40%.
"Mobile ads associated with maps and location data account for about a quarter of all mobile ad revenue. That's money Apple wants and Google doesn't want to lose out on."
http://www.businessinsider.com/wsj-apple-will-ditch-google-maps-on-ios-later-this-year-2012-6
It would be a much bigger blow if Apple were to get rid of Google search all together but I do feel the maps thing will put a bit of a dent in Google's bottom line.

I agree, I'm just saying it's going to sting a bit at Google. Hopefully it might help them get on the manufacturers and carriers a bit more to make sure they're selling quality products, I love Android but some of the stuff that gets put out there is absolute crap.
I know this thread has gotten off topic so I say to the OP, that might help if Google were to advertize. They make almost all their money off of ads but don't advertize themselves. The carriers do advertize phones a bit but they're more interested in selling you on their network than a specific phone. Not to mention the fact 3 of the 4 national carriers sell the iPhone so they wouldn't put down one of their own products.
Yeah, just came up with 40% off the top of my head because I was smoking crack.

Lol at least someone understands where I'm coming from. I doubt this will ever work but it was just an idea at the time.
But overall, I feel Google needs to help the OEMs stick together, for some amount of time, just to make it harder for Apple to try to make its dream of shutting Android down. Yes it would be hard, but on their current path, they may get their chance.
I laughed at some of the comments, but I guess the question I was trying to get around to ask,
Do you think google and the OEMs should make commercials with Google as the headliner to tell the world what Apple is suing about? I think if the overall general public knew, besides us tech enthusiasts , maybe people would see Apple for who they really are...
Just my two cents, and go!

This is actually what I've been hoping would happen for quite a while. It's much easier to pick them off one by one than to attack a united front. Unfortunately the all-mighty (dollar, euro, whatever) always wins out. If the manufacturers and Google could put aside their differences and come together and attack Apple, I think Apple would be forced to back down. For the first time in 4 years Android's world-wide usage dropped last quarter. It only dropped about 0.6% (from, I think, 51% to 50.4%) but a drop none the less. Symbian had over 50% of the market 4yrs ago, now it's dead. "Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it" -Winston Churchill

How does S3 rank vs its competition now?

I for one believe the s3 is still at the top or equal with the nexus 4 or note 2....maybe note 2 has a minor edge but as far as performance and speed I feel like the s3 is still and the top of the rankings I scored higher than the note 2 on the antutu app easily....but what are your thoughts?

How do you figure that? In what way is it inferior?
The N4 has a better CPU, GPU, screen and software.
The S3 has removable storage, that's about all that is better.
We all like our phones but lets not talk sh*t.

I wouldn't say Nexus 4 is inferior, but has it's drawbacks. Non-removable battery, no possibility of adding storage and maybe lack of LTE, but that's the end of it. Well, and its manufacturer is LG, that's a drawback for me, but thats all.
The fact that it sells for 300$ is it's main selling point, besides it's processing power (which I am beggining to consider is starting to be overkill). 2Gb of RAM is fairly nice too. If I did not own a SGSIII rigth now, I would be kicking my ass in a rush for getting one, that's for sure.

Removable battery is meh, got the nexus 7 and was concerned about freezes from overclocking too much and not being able to pull the battery, but if you hold the power button for like ten seconds it does a hard reboot so problem solved.
Storage is a kick in the ass alright but I have unlimited data and my music on Google music so I can get around that problem too and as for LTE well Ireland doesn't have LTE so that's a moot point.
It all depends on each persons situation I guess.

s3 is iphone killer , so yeap its stacking up pretty high in the competition
S3 still wins it for me. Hate those onscreen buttons. Hate that n4 doesn't have support for SD card. My 16 internal is filled with game and apps data while my 32g sd card only has 4gigs memory left from backups and videos, etc. My S3 rarely lags and at 1.6GHz, my benchmarks are all higher than that of stock Note2. Multiwindow support is coming so the only real advantage of note2 is the RAM which i think is overkill because i never fill up the 1gig i have bec i removed all the freaking bloatwares from samsung. I dont know though if it would be enough when the multiwindow comes.

We must understand that manufacturers are looking at profits and increasing utility is their main focus. Consider that there were people asking this same question when the s2 came out. Yes, it was "the best" in most areas, design, hardware etc. But that was then, this is now with the s3 replacing the s2 as the name suggests. We must consider the future developing prospects for the Android as a platform and what they hold and how soon manufacturers will release this "new technology". The reason why I put new technology in inverted commas is because when manufacturers introduced new products as "new", they have long been aware of the latter but only introduce it to the market now as it is better (more competitive) that the current devices.
Manufacturers are able (based on demand) to determine when a product is at its peak (in terms of sales) and so introduce a "new product" which they have developed long ago to gain new demand thus maintaining or increasing profits, the latter is most likely.
So in terms of the utility of our devices, yes we have "the best" but for how long is the real question? The new s4 is already developed IMHO but they are just waiting to release, I'm sure they monitor this forum to see what user demands are in the future, I "too much lag here, multi windows there, device getting too hot)" and so they adapt their product to meet user requirements thus increasing utility and potential profit.
Right now (given that there are no subjectively better products on the market) I am very happy and would not what anything else but let's see the "new" stuff in the future.

Our Phones Are Hippy Friendly

I thought I smelled patchouli when this thing had be on for a while. Seriously, I'm so tired of tree hugging environmentalists, it should be classified as a disorder.

Not sure why this or any piece of hardware being called carbon free should elicit anything but praise from us, the Market.

Because carbon is a naturally occurring element and we exhale it every breath, that's why. Just stop breathing and save the planet. Carbon dioxide, which is 100% required for all plant growth on this planet, has no business being classified as a pollutant. Environmental weenies are running amok. Carbon is the building block of life on earth, what they mean is carbon dioxide.

No, I mean carbon dioxide, as in one carbon particle for two oxygen particles. Environmentalists regulations now are specifically dealing with CO2.

Yeah, well, uranium and mercury are natural too, but I don't see a lot of people asking for increased amounts of them too often.
Keeping things balanced is good. So man should try to be responsible as they can.

The danger they pose is on a totally different level from carbon dioxide. Be responsible, but don't lose all common sense. Also, name one person who is calling for increased amounts of CO2? We just shouldn't cut or nose off to spite or face because a few nuts want to live in the stone age.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, Jank. Any natural byproduct is a good thing. Let's all live in $#it then, it's natural, right?
I'm not an effing tree-hugger, but I see the the reason behind trying to lesson carbon emissions. Thinking we don't have the ability to impact the natural systems if this small planet more than any other lifeform is complete BS. We run this world, let's do so in a manner that will keep our world viable for us and our children into the future.
You think the climate hasn't changed since the beginning of the industrial revolution? Read some stats. Some of that change comes from us.
If our phones being carbon free caused them to be $800 I'd say you had a point. But why knock cleaner emissions when it doesn't negatively impact the Market?
Btw, I would happily cut off my nose to spite my face if my nose were cancerous and there was a good risk of the disease spreading.

Nice argument, yeah, I want to live in filth. Stick to coherent arguments and the topic. When did I say that all/any byproducts are great? Don't make stuff up to make yourself feel smart. What I don't want are people regulating everything on the planet because of whacky science they won't even get peer reviewed by experts who don't think like them, or share the methodology of their research. Bankrupting the coal industry and shutting down power plants because of regulation that is impossible to comply with is irresponsible. Again, there is no proof that "carbon", specifically CO2, is bad for the environment. I am not talking about anything else but this emission/byproduct. They specifically chose it because it is everywhere, and largely benign, and they gave themselves carte blanche power over our lives and behavior. It never ends, dude. I want a clean planet too but I'm not willing to regulate us out of existence because some fruit loops say so.
Oh, and by the way, the price increases are coming, brother. Don't worry about that one.

Haha, you honestly think we're being "regulate[ed] out of existance"? Dude, don't call me out for being hyperbolic and then spew that crap. The truth is I like most of your posts. Honestly, papers indicating carbon's (CO2's) culpability in climate change not being peer-reviewed? Come on! But I guess we disagree on the fact that LG making this product carbon-neutral is a good thing. You think that's a bad thing or what? That's not even regulation. That's a choice LG made, and it likely helps in the free market.
And if we are going to regulate industry, like we should, I would rather we be overly conservative with it. Regulation isn't killing American production. Anyway, man, these discussions aren't gong to change anyone's mind. Internet preaching rarely does. It would be better to grab a beer, talk like gentlemen, and disagree. But that won't happen.
Keep livin' and lovin' the OG, brother! That's why we're here.

At first it does seem ridiculous that something we exhale and plants use would be a concern, but take into account how much land is destroyed by us. We constantly chop down forests to build new houses and expand communities. Then pair that with the ever-increasing population. Obviously this would have an effect on the CO2 levels. Perhaps not as much as environmentalists say, but an effect nonetheless.

Optimus G2 tease?

I watched the LG CES 2013 trailer video thing on youtube, and general speculation is that the G2 will be announced with a 5.5" screen and bumped up specs from our precious G. What are your thoughts? Will it be a Note 2 competitor, or a G replacement? And how do you think it will affect our updates?
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
I could never use a phone that big, and I carry a purse.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
This phone is already a note 2 competitor
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Powerwise yes, but the note has a far larger screen. A 5" + screen would make it a closer competitor. See LG intuition for where I'm coming from.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
What does anyone need that massive for a screen for lol. Besides if someone wanted that, wouldn't they just get the note 2 instead of this? I don't understand. :x

Agreed, minus the purse. I have large hands and having tested a Note 2, I think the LGOG, and phones of the same size for that matter, have reached the optimal size for traditional use, IMO.

Ask the millions of Note 1&2, or for that matter tablet users. Or ask why anyone needs a screen bigger than the 3.5" one Apple first put out.

It's called competition. The Note phones have proven there is a market for phablets. I'm going to guess you're not studying economics or business.
I returned my Note 2 in under a week. It is too damn big.
I'll be at CES next week. Hopefully there will be something interesting to comment on.

Then I guess this will blow your mind: http://t.co/91c3vTNA
I believe with LG's newfound success regarding the G, a direct attack on the Note would be fantastic, as well as possibly a new tablet. The G2 would fulfill the phablet competition that currently hardly exists. The LG Intuition is too wide, but a form factor like our G with the larger screen would be fantastic. Add a pen display, as well as having quickmemo, and the Note has real competition. Considering LG Displays is suing over the Note 10.1 in Asia, this may indeed be their plans in a nutshell. As HTC slowly falls (sad but apparently true), it's time for Samsung to have a true competitor in the Android market. I would love to see Motorola to come out of the blue, but that seems doubtful to happen. LG has an opening, and I think they should take it. I've been a Samsung fan, and still somewhat am (the siii disappointed me), but I think nothing makes products better like competition. The iphone is competition of course, but there needs to be android competition, or devices will get progressively worse.

If it is actually 5.5 inches then I don't mind even if it is technically the successor to this phone. Only thing id like in this phone that the g2 has is the 1080p screen and the camera if its any better

... I'm not talking about tablets. If I was talking about screens in general, I would be complaining about laptops, desktops, and tv's as well. But I'm not. It's a personal opinion, and a personal opinion of a few others, that a phone doesn't exactly need a huge screen. To each his own if they prefer that size. Apple has a ridiculously tiny screen, so I'm not really sure why they were even brought up lol. Considering I'm a girl, I have naturally smaller hands and have no desire to hold a phone that I need to doublefist. And even some men agree, it's too much.
No reason to be so nasty, Butler. (;

Sorry, not trying to be nasty. Just trying to point out that just because you (and for that matter, I) have small hands doesn't mean that everyone does, or that there's only one size that the market wants (as Apple seems to believe). Everyone thought Sammy was crazy for putting the Note out there, but since it and its followup have been very successful, it's only natural that other OEMs want a piece of the action. I'd like the big screen (even if I did have to double fist it), but there's no way I'd be comfortable having that thing in my pocket, and I'll be damned if I'm wearing a holster for a phone.
I'll be honest, I can't reach the whole screen of the OG with one hand, but I don't care. I arrange my icons to be close to my thumb, and use two hands when I have to.
Didn't mean to offend.

I'd rock a holster like a fanny pack. :B
Except not, haha. I guess I'm in luck with the whole small hands + long fingers thing (my grandma has always told me I have piano fingers). My only fears of extending my fingers is that it slips out of my hand and falls on the ground. I have a case, but I still use at least one hand to balance it. Can't get too ballsy with this phone.
No new smartphones from LG announced. The tease was a smart remote. Nothing more.
