Motion actions - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So, I just purchased my SGH-i747 and the "Motion" actions features do not work. ie. Screenshots by swiping th side of my hand over the screen does not actually take a screenshot. Any other people having this issue?

Nope.

So all of your actions are working as advertised? I am rooted, don't think that is the issue though. I am still on the stock image however....hope it is not a lemon....

The screen shot gesture needs to be done with the side of your hand moving over the phone, like a karate chop... Not moving the palm over.

I was using the "karate chop" with palm perpendicular to the screen going left to right and vice versa with no results....?

pretty sure its user error. youtube some of the gestures to find the correct way to do them

Not to be smart ass, but have you enabled all of your motion actions in settings?mine were disabled by default

I was having trouble the other day when I was trying to convert an iphone user (which I did by the way haha) I couldn't get it to work. It was definitely user issue. U really do have to place the side of your hand firmly on the screen to use this feature. Keep trying you will get it.

I'm having the same issue. I can get the ones like direct calling (when on a contact page, holding it up to your ear) and flip to mute to work, but the swipe to screenshot isn't working. I'm wondering what sensor is triggered to make this happen so I can try and test other things out for the same reason as you...want to make sure I don't have a lemon of some sort...
EDIT: Just had mine work. Touchy bugger isn't it? I did literally have to have my hand on the screen from right to left. I got it to work once so I'm satisfied. I'm sure I'll just use the Power+Home button combo from now on.

Hands Down Must Have App

This will save your power button. This app uses motion detected by your proximity sensor to turn your phone on.
Just installed it and it works awesome. Works so good you can just hold your phone and wiggle your thumb in front of the sensor and it turns on. All with the same hand
Here is the link to it in the market. Enjoy

Hit up my THANKS if you liked it.
Hmm... I'm giving this a try now. I'm worried how it will function in my pocket. Also, I'm more comfortable using my phone in my right hand.and reaching the sensor with the right hand isn't totally comfortable. But, I'll play with it and see how I like it. Cool app anyways. So thanks!

Don't know. Only had it installed for a couple of hours.
Been testing this for a while now. Doesn't use any battery so that's awesome.
I had to use this on my O.G. Evo because i had worn out the power button from flashing too much. Seems like it worked ok but at times it would lock up where I couldnt get it to turn the phone on to save my life. Ofcurse I'm sure they've gone thru plenty of updates since then.

That's what I use but it doesn't have the option to turn the screen on by tapping the sensor. I might have to check this other one out.
Why do I need to "save" my power button? That doesn't make sense, lol. As long as you're not bashing the power button to turn it on you're fine..
Tried out all ways to reliably trigger the prox sensor with one hand.
Finally fingered it out Holding the phone in my left hand, I can use my forefinger to double tap the edge of the phone just over the prox switch.
I don't have any real use for this....but it is pretty cool!
A pretty slick maneuver I found was to quick draw from my holster, then hold the phone towards the bottom, then do a quick double swipe over your sleeve then your unlocking thumb is in the right place!

This is for people who'd rather rub the paint off the area around their prox sensor than wear out the power button. Nice to have choices, I must admit!

This would be helpful for the seidio extended battery since the power button doesn't really work

Wouldn't the difference be that you have to just lightly tap the proximity sensor while you have to actually press down on the power button? I don't foresee any paint rubbing off around the sensor.

Cool.
But shouldn't this be in the EVO 3D Themes and Apps forum?

Save the Power button but totally drain your power. Battery power.
No way I'm running an app that will force my sensors to be on at all times.
I've been using this for a few hours now and it doesn't seem to be draining the battery.
Cool app, testing now.
Edit: Im on a G2, and it works sweeeeet. Still testing.

Suit yourself, doesn't drain whatsoever.

Capacitive buttons response

Right, the reason I have started this thread is, I see some discomfort using Back capacitive button. I am not complaining that buttons don't respond to touch, they do. All 3 of them.
Let me give you an example: I am playing with the phone, doing something on the screen. After, let's say few minutes, I want to go back, so I touch Back button, but it does not respond. I press few more times and eventually it registers. Some people would say "hit and miss" or "there is an issue with capacitive buttons". I say no, because I am touching it there, where I supposed to, also once it start registering, every time I press it, it registers (I have haptic feedback on, so I know it works). I have problems only, when I am not touching capacitive buttons for some time.
I hope I explained this well. I think this is, what in some reviews has been described as "hit and miss" or "capacitive buttons not register". Do you have the same problem? If yes, why is that happening? Is it software or hardware?
I don't have this problem because I realised that the most sensitive and best working area
for left/right button isactually in the inside space rather than exactly on those little points.
So once I press slightly to the middle, it works. It requires also a little longer press.
Ok, I will try that.
I do agree on the buttons. Probably the only thing to get used to, but one you do, no phone like it period! This is sick an amazing phone it is rediculous
The back button on my phone @ left corner is actually the best out of the three. and maybe I feel the same way about the middle "HOME" button where it registers little higher than the other two. actually I have hit it few times accidentally while I was trying to push the space bar on keyboard.
But every time I felt the haptic feedback, button worked.
I am happy with the performance of the buttons. It seems like they work like the power and eject buttons on the PS3. They respond when you remove your finger.

The only thing I have to get used to...
Almost no extra hits anymore...
One touch is most of the times correct registered :-(

Right, so by looks of it, there is no issue. Something I have to get used to. Thanks a lot guys. I also hope it will help future buyers as well.
I have not had any problems with the capacitive buttons so far and tbh i prefer them to hardware buttons like on the arc/play etc
No problems here. They are better than the one's on a Samsung galaxy s2.
I used to have a Nexus One and the buttons are similar to that, you sort of have to roll/slide your finger upwards on the button ever so slightly.
I barely notice it but I know what you mean.
I find that if you aim just slightly to the middle of the screen rather than on the dots then it works great

How can you be serious? I have both, and as perfect as the Xperia S is as an upgrade, its capacitive buttons are not as sharp and fool proof..that's my only gripe ...
Example situation of problem:
Right after finishing recording a decent length FullHD video, pressing home or back needs to be done repeatedly to register (MOST of the time).
Not a deal breaker, but I so hope this is software related..
I have the same issue but after one day of owning this phone im learning where to press to get a response first time
Posted with my Sony Xperia S
Well I started off doing the "pressing above the dots" thing, until I noticed you could also swipe them (I swipe from the transparent bar up)....now I'm used to swiping them and never have any problem
I'm liking the swiping method, its impossible to miss and well..it's kinda fun for some reason

Yeah, that works very well. Thanks.
I am just glad we have sorted it out and it turned out it is not a software or hardware issue. After reading some advises, my phone cooperates with me much better.

While it work I have never gotten keys to sync w/ the screen after a reboot. I have to reset it again. Has anyone got it to sync all the time?
mine does.. maybe i'm lucky. sorry i can't be of any more help.
So you run keyboard backlight controller and the 2 top boxes checked and the bottom unchecked. So the keys dim w/ the screen. And on a reboot the keys are still in sync w/ the screen?
Maybe u have to make sure the app is on ur internal card. Most of the time if I have a program that resets on restart that is what to blame ;-D
Sent from my MB870 using Tapatalk
No, the top two are unchecked, and the bottom is checked. And yes, it automatically syncs every time
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
In your case the lights are set to be off with or without the screen! There is no sync'ing.
I was asking if anyone got the keys to be on WITH the screen & remain so after a reboot. The 2nd option stops its action unless you toggle it again.
If all else fails, get an Otterbox case. You'll never see those lights again lol. That is the only thing I hate about this case. I actually WANT to see my buttons glowing.
Lol. I am talking bout keeping the key lights on/off as the screen is on/off. Our phone light sensor does not do it's job very well & you pick up the phone in the dark & you cannot tell you have the wrong end of it cuz the damn lights are off. "Keyboard backlight CONTROLLER" LOL people read the op but not each post.
BTW I use the impact (rubber only) otterbox & I cut out the key overlays so the keys are exposed.

Same case I have. Does cutting out the keys compromise the structural integrity of the case much? If not, I'm about to go grab my xacto knife and start slicing
It's maybe a bit looser but ok. I went very near the edge molding line. I went "thumb room". So go slow. But w/o the battery door even, it works great.
Okay, I finally got it to work! I haven't seen those lights since March!

[Q] Sweep2wake for Note?

Hi,
I'm looking to try out a Note. But want to know if there is a feature in some kernel or flashable zip of some kind to achieve this. I searched around but got mixed results so I'm not certain. thank you in advance.
I remember having that option on my Vivid. However, I do believe that is an HTC/Sense option. Someone correct me?

Whoa, funny to see 2 other people switching from a Vivid to a Note!
This is something I'd been looking for a while as well, never found anything. It was such a nice way to turn on/off my screen, made the button seem ancient and obsolete.

well, not just a note but just something a bit bigger than the vivid, i'm even considering the GS3 as well. but the thing is, I dock my phone onto my car's instrumentation panel and it seems to work well but there's no way i can get to the vivid's power button, and even the samsung lines would be difficult to get to as the power button is on the side; i hope someone can make something like this for the samsung lines.
thanks.

It doesn't really need to be 'swept' to wake. all I want is something that I can touch (or hold) on the front screen or bottoms to wake this thing up. anything? if not, I think what I'll do is go for the international version which, its middle button wakes the note up.
thanks!
you can flash a cm based rom and set device to stay awake while charging. you can also set to wake with volume keys. unless you mount phone with both sides blocked. i personaly set to stay awake and have modified my sunglass holder to hold phone. sits just above rear view mirror and works great even though power button is down and cant be pressed. if you want to stay with touchwiz screen times out at 10 minutes and no option to stay awake. however if you have sqlite editor you can change the database to stay awake but i have had issues with this not wanting to stick after reboot.

so you want to wake/unlock the device without using any hardware buttons?
i use lightlock or proximity screen off/on from the play store. it uses the front sensors to wake/unlock or sleep.
i set lightlock to just 1 sec so all i have to do is put my hand/finger over the front sensor then my note wakes up

Does this mean it wakes up in your pocket?
no. it will only wake if it senses a proximity change
so if you use lightlock and just cover the sensor, nothing will happen. if you cover the sensor for a set period that you choose and then remove your hand, then your device will wake.
you should try it out. it makes using your phone feel futuristic. impresses a lot of people especially when you show somebody with an iphone lol

Motion Activated Screen ON Apps?

right now im testing screen control, which is free in teh app store (on stock ICS)
it works but works when it wants to really. it might be for earlier android versions.
but im looking for a simple app that recognizes motion on my preferred sensitivity to turn the screen on.
im so tired of pressing the power button on these phones. it irritates the piss out of me now.
i just wanna pick my phone up and screen come on. i dont even care if the screen comes on when i dont want it to..
Try this one here
Or go with the paid version here
I havent tried either of them yet but they look promising.
I used this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=grandmaster.awesomeonoffultimate&hl=en
It worked really well but eventually the extra battery use wasn't worth it.
What if the folds from ur pockets turn the screen on? I see no point though in screen on with motion detection it's cool to show off but I think its just a of waste time. Thing you could tell us the plans for this?
Using phone as a media server and don't wish to get up to turn screen on so u just wave ur hand from a distance? That sounds pretty useful lol
