I've tried this with at least four roms, two from FJ, one HYPR or something, and now stock official ICS. In a recent-ish update an option showed up in the settings that allows you to set your finger to do something different than the s pen. Before both would draw or paint or whatever you were doing, but you can set it to where your finger will erase or smudge or another one of four choices. So the app should know the difference between pen and finger. I know the phone does, I have the arrow indicator always there when the s pen is close...
but as far as I can tell Infinite Painter thinks everything is your finger. If I tell it that I want my finger to be the eraser then the s pen becomes an eraser as well. Really confused me for a while when I had set finger to smudge and forgotten about it.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it my phone or is there a problem with the app? I feel like it could be from loading so many non-s pen compatible ROMs because when I went stock ICS via Odin it left a lot of my apps there (like titanium backup). Any ideas?

Pretty sure its the app because it's the only app that force closes on me often...to the point where as much as I love it I hardly use it
Fair enough. It crashes on me constantly as well... it would prolly be my favorite app if it didn't. Since my current rom doesn't have S-anything, Sketchbook mobile is my fav. The brushes in that are fantastic, but no one has been able to match s-memos' smoothness and ability to ignore my hand resting on the screen while I draw. Sketchbook gives crazy lines all over the place if my palm touches the screen... makes drawing a lot harder when you have to watch where you hand sits all the time.

I am an artist, who loved sketching on his ipad, but had to sell that one cuz of its restrictions being apple ..
Now I have an Galaxy tab 10.1 gt 7500 ..
But I seem to get those ugly wavy lines when ever I try to draw diagonal lines
The slower I draw the more wavy they become.
But if I draw it in a quick gesture, it does not show any problems
Have put up a screen grab of me drawing straight lines in Sketchbook Pro
( this problem happens even in other Drawing Apps )
Please do help
Cheers
I checked on mine (in sketchbook) and it works fine. I'd guess there's something wrong with the touchscreen. If it's new, I'd go exchange it, or get warranty service.
I, too have used this app and don't notice wavy lines like that, unless I want wavy ones. I usually use a tablet stylus or brush instead of my finger.
same problems
got a new replacement , yet the problem persists. Drawing with a capacitive stylus too does not give accurate results
Also when taking notes, a lot of words and letters get skipped and the letters dont come out fully
Any of you guys actually use this for note taking ?
Is there any solution ,workaround for this digitiser inaccuracy ?

There's a thread in the apps and theming section that has a list of compatible widgets and apps that work on our tabs. Look for SuperNote. It's perfect for taking notes. For your drawing problems, maybe it's the type of stylus you are using. I have one from Samsung with a rubber tip that works great. I also use a nomad brush for more realistic brush strokes and feel that works great.

The super note app is great !
Its got a faster response time ,
Though is it possible for you to just post a screenshot of you drawing diagonals or circles slowly using a stylus , just want too see if the batch of tablets in the store are having problems
Ok, I've got exactly the same problem!
I guess most ppl won't notice this until they try to actually draw something.
Any luck finding solution?

arizal
Ok, I tested the stylus on friend's htc desire - same thing. Using finger does not produce waves, at least not that big.
Looks like the problem is related to the contact spot size, small spot - problem.
I guess the problem is the interpolation between the sensors.
I dont know if anything can be done here... But if someone has an idea, please share it!

What are the little (or big I suppose) things that make you love your Note over your past phones? Also, if you've installed ICS, what are the little things you notice over GB?
Personally, there are a few things about the Note in general that make it the most awesome phone out there now and the foreseeable near future:
*Obviously the screen. Better than everything out there. 5.3 inches. Bam. Super AMOLED HD. Bam. This thing amazes me and everybody who has seen this thing.
*SPen. I originally thought it would be a cool novelty, but not much more. Boy am I wrong. I'm Swyping this whole message using the SPen and tablet Swype beta. Easily the fastest and most accurate speech entry I have come across. Also, using the SPen is super useful to jot down quick notes. Lastly, it is also really great for navigating the phone, especially while it it's laying on a table or desk. The smoothness that the SPen tip has allows me to only use my pen hand, whereas using a finger requires me to still use my other hand to hold it in place in the desktop because of the friction of my finger.
*Flip cover. I know most people don't like it much, but I think it's great. Not only does it protect my screen in my pocket, but I also love having it cover the screen while holding it up to my head for a call, as it keeps oils off of my screen, especially while I'm sweating during any physical activities. The texture of the back also has a grippy, yet nice to the touch feeling compared to the glossy stock white back. Lastly, it's a great way to hold the phone in portrait mode like a book with my thumb right in the hinge/crease.
Now for the little things about ICS over GB:
*Face unlock. Once you take enough calibration pictures, it's super quick and amusing, not to mention ****ing awesome. I feel futuristic as hell when I use it. Haha.
*Task manager. Love the swipe to remove thumbnails. Way better/much more visually appealing way of switching between apps.
*Animations. They seem so much smoother in general. Not too much to explain.
*Screen dimming. On GB, the transition from bright to dark just before the screen times out was instant, and the stark change bugged me. On ICS, it fades to the darker setting, and if you touch the screen to brighten it up, it scales back up to bright very smoothly again.
*Swyping while charging. On GB, if my phone was charging, for some reason, Swype would get very jumpy and inaccurate, the trail showing a jagged trail I was supposedly drawing. On ICS, it's just as smooth as when it's not charging.
*Overall setup of the system. The menus, how you add widgets and apps, and rearrange home screens all are more visually pleasing and better to me.
*ICS versions of apps. I love the clean lines of the ICS versions, as well as how some apps are completely different like the ICS version of Google Maps. Included in ICS apps is Chrome beta, which is very nice and smooth, only I wish I could put it in a desktop browser mode, as mobile versions of websites are irrelevant for the most part with this screen.
*ICS made the black crush issue way better. I know they could make it even better, and I'm sure it eventually will be through either Samsung or our awesome devs, but for now it's much better.

+1 on the screen/size.
+1 also on the s pen and Swyping..
Also coming from a vibrant I must say the GPS is awesome.

I jumped from the Streak to the Note and I have to say I do enjoy the screen much better than my Streak, a lot clearer. But the 2 biggest reasons why I jumped was to move to a device with extra horsepower and a bigger community. DJ_Steve was a godsend for the streak but as time moves on, so do devs and I'm happy to be apart of a community where there are so many devs working all towards making our device the best it can be.
I love how people first make fun of me for having this phone, but then when they actually hold it and play with it they discover how awesome it is
Like the title says... Is this a defect or a galaxy note feature?
Sometimes when I'm using the s pen, it seems like it taps the screen even though the pen does not even touch the screen yet. I can recreate the problem especially on the bottom right areas.
What I want to know if this actually a note feature.
It's weird because in those areas I only need to hover the pen and it will click/tap the icons there.
Same issue here with Dot button in Memo thou.

Same here... Bottom right just over the back button ... Driving me nuts
Happens to me too....
It is a feauture if you feel comfy with it. It is a defect if you do not feel comfy with it. I dnt find it to be a defect

There's been several mentions of this defect here on the forums already.
Here's the short explanation: the magnet from the speaker on the back of the phone is screwing with the s-pen signal a little bit in the lower right area of the screen.
Here's the short fix: wrap a tiny piece of aluminum tape around the s-pen, right at the bottom of the button, as seen in this video.
Or you can wait and see if Samsung makes an updated version of the s-pen that doesn't get the interference.
Hello. I bought both a Sprint and Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Amoung the many differences is the S PEN. The Sprint one does not have tne non-touch of the stylus to perform funtions on the phone. For example, I can swipe pages or select a function without ever touching the screen with Verizon' stylus. And both sylus' are compatible with ea h phone. Tne manuals are correct for version. My question: Has any body else experieced this. Is there a way to tell which stylus model you have? Would buying one off from Samsung products page help? Thanks!

I don't think that you're supposed to be able to switch the pages without touching the phone if you can draw without touching the phone something is probably wrong with the spen try tapping it on something hard

The Verizon stylus does not draw in the air. But, I literally tap the air not the screen to select apps or swipe to a different screen. There is no physical contact unless I am actually drawing or taking a note.
On the Sprint stylus, there is a light beam that you can line up to certain functions for a pop-up effect. But every thing else is using the beam to make it scroll with arrows without touching. Verizon's sylus you do all of the functions except as noted, in the air.

Thanks. I did see that. But I am not having any issues other than the fact both stylus' seem to be working according to each phone carriers manual. I prefer the way the Verizon works by not touching the screen itself. I thought it my be software related, but each stylus is interchangeable and just curious as to why and how to get one like the Verizon for Sprint.

There is no difference mate. They work like one and the same. At least that is the intention, if they do work differently it needs to be fixed by tapping the pen on a hard surface until it works right.
You're supposed to only get Air View functionality by holding the pen over the screen, not actual control as if it's touching.
I guess I am going to have to actually go into the Verizon and Sprint stores to look at their models as even after "calibrating" both, they still function the same. Like I said before, the Verizon S Pen not actually having to touch the screen is totally cool. If you want to swipe to a different page it does it in the air. If you want to select a function or App, you just "tap" it without touching the screen. It has no round circle indicator that shows up like the Sprint model. I can't believe that I am the only one to have this working like this.
I tried the hard tap calibrating and also where you take the actual button cover off and calibrate to try to make them the same but they both still do their thing. And both S Pens function the same way if I use them on either phone. Trust me, if you could get this to work you would love it. I just wish I could figure out how to get the Sprint S Pen to do the same as it seems like it is missing something after using the one from Verizon.

All it is is that your Verizon s-pen has the pen nib jammed in so it always thinks it is touching the screen. When you get close to the screen, the Wacom technology kicks in. You can test this pretty easily. On your Sprint s-pen hold it against your pinky and do the same thing as you do with your Verizon one. It will move around without touching the screen. That's also the reason why you don't get the air view functionality on the Verizon because it always thinks it is touching the screen. Hope this helps.

Yea! You are totally right. I wasn't sure at first what you meant by the pinky thing, but once I put my pinky on the tip of the S Pen and tried to swipe or whatever, it works. I guess now I just need to "jam" the rib in on the Sprint one and I will be good to go! HA! Thanks so much. You made my night.
If you are interested in the finger print scanner for the galaxy s5, but at the same time you are also interested in protecting your $650 investment, you may run into problems.
3rd party cases such as otterbox or body glove impede the motion of whatever finger you use to unlock your device. The reason being that all of the cases have a ridge the causes your finger to move up premature to the scanner recognizing your finger print. Although it will work in some cases, it is not nearly as efficient as if you were using no case at all. I have already contacted a samsung representative as well as otterbox to see what is going to be done about this seemingly noticeable flaw.
So bottom line, if you are going to buy a 3rd party full protection case for your galaxy s5, take note that the finger print scanner will produce unsatisfactory results.Let me know if you guys have found a case that takes into consideration the fingerprint scanner, or what ways you have remedied this problem.
Please thank if this post helped you, or informed you.

Not sure if this is too off topic, but the fingerprint scanner in general seems to be more a gimmick and not terribly refined. The setup always goes super smooth, then it's almost like I grow prosthetic fingertips and I can no longer get into my phone using what's recorded. I've defaulted to a pattern just cause I can do that easier/faster.

That is a valid point. I do not think that Samsung should have put a fingerprint scanner just yet, they should have made improvements and implemented it in a later device. I believe they did rushed to put it in just because they did not want to let apple beat them in a category... But since they did, we have to make use the best we can with it. I try to use it, but it just becomes annoying when you find yourself swiping 3 or 4 times just to unlock your phone. I will probably resort to a pattern unlock as well.

This doesn't make sense! That's like saying they shouldn't have made a galaxy and just went straight to galaxy s2. I agree it should have been refined and thought out better but even if they had skipped it on the s5 and put it on note 4, or s6 and it still is designed like it is now, people would complain. I rather have it now working like it does than not have the feature at all. Think about it! It works, just not so well one-handed, but Samsung does not state it to be a one-handed feature. It works nearly 100% when I use it as the animation and Samsung designed it to.
I wish they had made it an actual touch and hold though, not swipe. (Apple lawsuit)
Ideas:
They could have made the home button take up the whole space from screen to bottom of phone and still kept it rectangular, and made it more flush without increasing the bezel size, for hold to scan.
Put it in the back or recent button instead, just as they are now, just long press to scan.
Samsung owes me for this one here!!! A solar panel back with finger print scanner/heart rate monitor all in one. Charge by light in day, plug in at night!

How are you comparing a feature not being included to a whole phone not being released? Terrible analogy. It does make sense. Seems to me Samsung wanted to be the "me too" in the scanner realm, just like with the S Voice. Both inferior to Apple. They should have waited, if it's this broken and yes it is broken. Works about half the time.

If you look, you will see that I had thanked his post as I agreed with some of his feelings, as was written in my post. I quoted what I didn't agree with, and explained my thoughts on it.
I didn't know this was a paper in ENG/LIT class; You are the teacher? Shall I point out the issues with your punctuations, sentence structure, etc...? Their is no written law of what one can use as an "analogy". The point I was trying to make was obviously received by you. Analogy Def. = "a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification".

Again this is a very subjective comment. If it works "half the time" for you how/when is it "broken". So if you cant get it to work consistently others should not have the use of the feature at all? To be fair; I tried using it for unlocking the device one-handed and I gave up on it like the OP did because I was more consistent and faster using the pin to unlock. This doesn't mean its "broken" or should have been abandoned. Should we not use the heart rate monitor because it requires you to be still in order to work? They added waterproofing is it perfect? My sole point is that I commend Samsung and ALL manufactures for adding any, and all that they can, as long as it can be turned off and is not forced upon us to use. This is how progress happens.
Thanks for your response.
