my s2 has gone mental tonight.

so i kept restarting and taking out the battery til it stopped.
you can see the charging period didnt seem to show up on the graph. the charging period shown there i was not charging but the phone seemed to think it was. so as i was restarting it a few times it went from about 70 to 49 to 17 to 49 again
and also i havent been able to get a phone signal for ages and then when i can it wont let me register a network.
my phone is now basically just a wifi web browsing device until i get it sorted :crying:
Sounds like a battery failure.. Not sure tho.

thats a relief. o2 is down nationwide
EVERY single time I've heard of this issue (and there are a TON of threads all over XDA about this, not to mention all over other forums - seriously, just google "i9100 charging paused voltage too high", and watch how many results you get), it is due to a dirty or failing USB port.
Steps to take.
-clean USB port with a clean, dry brush. (don't be TOO rough)
-if that doesn't work, take out the battery, and with a q-tip and small amount of isopropyl alcohol, clean the USB port. Let it dry, then replace the battery.
-if THAT doesn't work, you'll probably have to get the part for the USB port replaced.

yeah i know. i had both things happen at the same time so initially i thought it was my phone on the fritz and they were related
so i tried those things and it still having problems.
I bought this replacement in Nov off Ebay. After i lost my original one. Do you think I can still take it anywhere to be repaired?
will the o2 store look at it for me?
such a hassle. im gonna have to unroot it and stuff
oh great and now it keeps randomly vibrating and going to this screen and then back to my home screen

By "those things" I'm guessing you didn't actually replace the part for the USB port. Just the cleaning steps?
That image is "desk clock" mode. It gets activated when certain pins in the USB port are shorted with a specific resistance. If you thoroughly cleaned the port as best you could, and are getting random desk clock mode and still randomly getting the charging paused message, then I'd say your USB port is dying a slow death. You'll need to get the part replaced.
From what I hear the part itself is pretty cheap (like $15) and not hard to replace. I don't know if O2 will do it for you though, since you didn't actually buy the phone from them. You can try... but I doubt it, since it was a second hand purchase. Or just take it to a local cellular repair shop.
My phone is also having a similar experience. I running an AOKP rom so it keeps charging instead. How long will the usb port work for. It's being sent back to Samsung to have the screen replace and have notified them about this. So will the usb port work till next week or could it die in hours or days?

I'm not sure how someone on a different continent than you can possibly answer a question about the state of the USB port on your phone and how long it will last.

hmm i'll have to look into it then. no idea where to start buying parts and where to take it to repair.
will have to do some research
It can by caused by humidity too in my opinion. Had this problem few times. My friend had too. It was gone after putting out battery for few hours in warm place. Even when I was keeping my phone in locker at roofed swimming pool it was happening.

I'm going on average, like how long would be last. Roughly. Mine's been doing it for the past 3 days.

It depends on the severity of the damage specific to your phone. If it's damaged more severely, then not long. If it's not damaged so severely, then longer. How long it's been doing it doesn't mean anything.

Well it's still charging but my pc no longer recognises it so I don't thin it's going to last too long.
ok its getting worse now. ive requested a repair from samsung.
before i send it off should i remove all my google and facebook accounts or should it be ok to leave that kind of stuff on there?
As long as it's unrooted, running stock firmware, has the flash counter reset if necessary, why would you need to remove stuff like that first ? I probably wouldn't.
Always remove personal data. Fully wipe your phone. You never know who works in service and what will di with your personal stuff. Thats my opinion.

I got a brand new s2 two and a half weeks ago, 1 week ago when unplugging my charger it sort of went crazy bringing up the car mode, desk clock, charging when it wasn't and the voltage too high popup every 30 seconds. I took it back and they exchanged it straightaway however i have had this one for 3 days and its done exactly the same thing. I rooted and installed a custom rom on the first but left the second totally stock. It also happened to the girlfriends note too.....
Luckily i haven't had the phone for a month yet so i'm still entitled to an exchange but this has put me off samsung and i'm thinking of an alternative if they'll allow me to take a different handset.

For the past day or two my phone has been enabling car mode.
I haven't made any major updates in a while either. What is really pissing me off is that it's disabling any sound coming from the phone and it is closing some apps instantly. It is happening whether my phone is plugged in or not, and if i want to use the phone for storage over usb and car mode decides to activate the computer claims it has been disconnected though the phone says it's still charging.
Is there any way to get rid of it? I don't have a car, or any sort of dock for the phone. I really have no use for whatever it was meant to do and I'd really like it gone...
Any ideas/suggestions?
I never had a problem with car mode activating at random, however I hate car mode and the Google car app with a burning passion, so what I did is...
- Uninstalled the Google Car Home app via Titanium Backup
- Downloaded (and subsequently purchased) the app NoDock. NoDock prevents your phone from going into car mode altogether, and its saved me a lot of frustration. I think its $1.99, but don't quote me. There's a trial you can get first for 7 days, I'd recommend that.
That;s obviously a road requiring you pay to fix the problem (and it might not even...) However, if your phone is acting abnormal for no reason, ie you haven't neglected it or played soccer with it, then vzw should replace it... But I have no experience with that, so that's all I've got for ya, sorry! Best of luck.
I looked for the trial version ad it doesn't seem to be out there anymore... The full version still advertises it as to use the trial before buying, but I can't seem to find it...
At this point the phone isn't making any progress charging and it is continuously connecting/disconnecting from the computer...
If it doesn't start working might have to un-root and bring it in >.>
my tbolt lately as well activates car mode when i am in the car but i hate it and want it dead... it happened after installing gingeritis.... but it also did it on das bamf gb... i refuse to give up my gb so i will execute the app!!

Well, deleting Google's Car Home app will prevent that from launching, however, the Thunderbolt itself has a "car mode" that it will enable when the dock trigger is activated. So, unfortunately, simply deleting the Car Home app might not solve your entire problem, but its worth a shot nonetheless. Also, I'm not sure that NoDock will work with a GB-based ROM, but that, too, is worth giving a try!

In all honesty, if its not even charging anymore, un-root, wipe, and nand that puppy and send 'er in. I know that the TB is unique in that it doesn't use a magnet to activate Car Mode like previous HTC phones, but instead it uses (to my knowledge) a short in the USB slot to decide whether the phone is docked or not. So problems with USB mounting, charging, docking when not docked, etc. would seem to indicate that you have some sort of problem with the port itself. That's just a shot in the dark, but man, I'd have sent that in yesterday
And as for NoDock, I just looked, and I can't find the trial either
To some extent it is still working. It isn't getting any charge, but if I unplug the phone it turns off almost instantly. Seems like it will be hell to move the stock stuff over to the phone to flash it, but looks like that's what its come to... Guess I'm bringing it in tomorrow...

If you have a friend with a smartphone or even any kind of bluetooth-capable storage device, you could send the files to yourself via BT... It may not be the fastest, but it might save you some major frustration. But yeah dude, that sounds straight messed up. Best of luck.
I just put the sd card into my laptop to transfer. Back on stock (feels soo different...) No more car mode... But the phone still isn't charging... Until I can bring it in I guess I'll make the phone look like it isn't brand new again...

Either way, as far as I know, VZW checks for two things:
1) Obvious evidence of negligence and/or intentional damage
2) Something I don't remember that has nothing to do with root
So you should be in the clear, if anything just say you did a factory reset yourself to try to fix the problem
Well as it did when I rooted it, it recovered all of my apps w/o me having to do anything. So the phone already looks the way it did before excluding homescreen stuff and an empty inbox/contacts atm. And the most damage there is, is a small scratch where there was already an air bubble on my screen protector. If they would have ever made a case that fit the extended battery that probably wouldn't even be there =o

Haha yeah I feel you on that one. I think the type of negligence they look for is more like a mangled looking device with the customer claiming innocence. You should be fine in my opinion.
hmm... just woke up, about to bring in the phone, which did manage to charge overnight. noticed i still have a rotating rosie and it looks like i'm still undervolted as my kernel was doing earlier. well neither highly noticable as bad things... and car mode did come back today so, i'll be bringing it in now...
Go for it bro, I really doubt they'll check for little stuff like that, especially considering the bigger issue of car mode and your charging problems. Good luck though!

Unable to get out today, so I've been looking into other options for now.
This seems to be what it's used for though I've never been given these options when the phone goes into car mode. The icon shows up in the notification bar identical to the picture.

On the VZW site these are their solutions. (none worked for me being there is no water damage and the port looks fine from what i can see, still gonna have to bring it in...)
Maybe this can help someoneelse if anyone runs into this problem or bring more options to try to help me fix it.
From what I can see, the first picture is of HTC's car home application, as opposed to Google's. When your phone enters car mode, the default action is to launch one if those applications, unless you've manually removed them. The fact that your phone enters car mode but launches nothing is abnormal in and of itself, not to mention the fact that it shouldn't be activating car mode in the first place.

I did manage to make it to the vzw store and they were surprised to see car mode on the phone at all. The lady at the store took out the battery, restarted the phone and concluded that I would get a replacement after the bill that was just paid like yesterday clears with them.
Good! Hopefully all goes well and you'll have a functional device soon

I bought my HTC Flyer few months back. It works really well for me.
However, unfortunate things happen. I was restarting my Flyer when suddenly the power went off, screen blank. I held the power button, 2nd attempt with the volume up button; no go. I put it on charge, the LED did not turn on charging. I realised that when i held the power button for 10 secs, short red blink observed, but nothin happens.
I read bout how other HTC smartphones having the same problem. but they manage to restart it by pulling the battery off and put it on again. In flyer case, there's no way to do that, since the battery is well cased in Flyer.
anyone have the same problem? and solve it? appreciate your help guys. thanks.
btw, I love My Flyer.. huhu
hmm do you have adb setup? if so, try plugging the flyer into the computer, then type in "adb reboot" and see if that will turn it on. this happened to me on my phone once and doing that turned it back on

Hi Gumby63,
Thanks for the response. I'd just downloaded the adb. will let you know if it works.. Thanks.
Hi Gumby63,
Its not working. it does not detect my device. I guess this must be an hardware issue..
are you positive you have adb setup correctly? that could be the problem but if it's not, i'm not sure what else there is you can try. maybe contact htc and see if they will repair it?

I have the same problem bought a few month ago and now the light does not go on and the flyer does not charge the battery Please help
Have you tried a different charger or leaving the Flyer connected to a USB port on the computer for a couple hours to charge it? If the battery is not charging and its below 10% it will not turn on.
I have the same problem, I can't turn my flyer on into bootloader.
The thing I did: tried downloading the official HTC upgrade from GB to Honeycomb and install it... didn't work, it just restarted and I get the screen with a droid by an exclamationsign, so I simply restarted it and choose factory reset in bootloader, but I didn't come longer than the htc letters so I simply restarted it again to bootloader and it couldn't find any bootpictures suddenly.
Afterwards it turned itself off and now I can't get it turned on by any way.
When it charges, the LED-light only flashes amber.
I've asked HTC about it and they recommend that i send my flyer to repair at a HTC-workshop.
Is to get it repaired my only choice or have some other other choices about my problem?
BTW! It is pretty new so I still have warranty on it (won't endanger my warranty by any way)
Basically what has happened in your case is that the aborted upgrade has left you with a recovery that is incompatible with your hboot. Recovery is used to control charging of the flyer when it is powered off, as a result your flyer is not charging and your battery is discharged.
Some people have been able to get some charge into the flyer by leaving it plugged into the wall charger overnight and have been able to fix the problem by reinstalling the software, others have not.
If overnight charging doesn't allow you to power on to the bootloader then you will need to send it in for repair.
my flyer just give me a huge shock.
it shown that cannot charge, cannot turn on.
luckily im stubborn enuf, i tried to plug in the power adapter, then hold the power on button, after around 10 second, the red LED blink once, continue hold, after around 20 second the red LED stay on, & my flyer turn on!!
Thanks god i dont need to send it for RMA, i have so much personal data in it!
If you are not under warranty and/or willing to unhook the battery yourself it is actually pretty easy.
1. Take the back cover off that hides the microSD card and remove the two screws, one under a black sticker the other a red. (remember it will void your warranty)
2.You can now separate the casing, the volume rocker switch will be lose so don't lose it. You can use you fingernail, plastic butter knife or plastic pry bar that comes with screen replacement kits.
3. Unplug the battery for a few seconds and re plug.
Re install the same manner.
I can post a picture or two if needed.
Take the two screws on either side after you open the back top portion to access the microsd card.

Whether or not that is a suitable course of action depends on the casue of the problem. If the battery is completely flat then unplugging it will not help.
I got an Evo View 4g for Christmas from an online retailer (DailySteals) that was selling them for $239. Bye-bye Kindle Fire. That was a no brainer.
But all of a sudden it stopped accepting charges from the wall charger. I tried using the USB cable but no help. I left it plugged in all night, no difference. I did the soft reset but it didn't help or make a difference. It's like it can't get a physical connection through the mini usb port on the device any more. It has a blinking orange light until it quits and the entire screen goes dark because the battery is so low.
I took it to the local Sprint store. BIG MISTAKE. Unless you bought it from them they will not even talk to you. That was a big waste of time. Next I called Sprint, another big waste of time. Without a 4G service plan, they don't want to talk to you either. WTF? Hmmm, not sure I want to go to Sprint anytime soon. T-Mobile here now.
I called HTC and they were very helpful. The technician walked me through a few things but nothing worked. They are sending me a box so it can be returned to the service center. WAY TO GO HTC! I'll let you all know how it turned out.
I have never personally returned hardware to HTC for repair, but all reviews that I have seen have given them excellent marks for repairs.

In defense of Sprint, they don't manufacture the device nor did they sell it to you. I don't think the mere fact that it is able to be activated on their network gives them the responsibility to service it when you don't have a plan with them.
I am glad that HTC is standing up to their warrranty.

Why would you expect Sprint to help you? You bought it from a third party retailer and it never had a Sprint contract attached to it. So at that point it's just an HTC product, nothing to do with Sprint.
This is a Sprint HTC Evo View 4G. So where Sprint's responsibility ends and HTC's begins is bit murky to me.
The delivery box has Sprint all over it. The printed users's guide has Sprint all over it. The device has the Sprint logo printed on it. When it booted it comes up with Sprint logos. It initially guides you through a Sprint registration.
So using it as a Wifi only tablet without a 4G service plan removes Sprint from the equation is questionable at best.
Noticed that sometimes no matter how careful i was about swyping the correct word, it would come out wrong.
I checked "show complete trace" in swypes settings to see where i was messing up, and i noticed something much worse than my own mistakes.
Sometimes, my swype sensor goes nuts for no reason. You can see the trace jumping all over even though my finger is moving in a straight line. Heres a screenshot of just moving my finger left and right to see how the trace jumps everywhere:

My screen seems to be 'off' every so often. Most often near the top quarter of my screen when in portrait. Even in landscape it's stays off. So I know it's not software.
Swype messed up for me too a couple times. More jagged than even what you posted. Though it cleared up after an evening or so. Though most times I use SwiftKey. So it could still be doing that.

thank god im not the only one. Im starting to think i might just have a bad phone. This did this to me on cm and stock. And yes ive had super jagged lines too, i just couldnt replicate it for the screenshot.
What other issues have u had with your device (battery), and is your screen abnormally dim?
Just that screen issue. I exchanged the phone once, only because of screen issues. Dead pixel and touch was off by a bit on the top and bottom of the screen.
I feel bad with all the issues you're having with yours. Mine has been great on nearly everything.
Hopefully you'll get yours figured out. I'm regularly on here as I'm recovering from surgery. Literally nothing else to do. Feel free to message me if you have a minor issue that isn't quite thread worthy. Gives me something to do.

tell me, is it plugged in when it is messing up? or does it become worse when plugged in. i found that i had a defective charger and the "cursor" or where it was registering y input would jump erratically around the screen! eventually my phone died and i had o get it replaced.
Nope, plugged in or not it doesn't mess up anymore. Hopefully my phone won't die 0.o

Think I've finally got some issues straightened out. Battery life is now incredible (literally the best ive ever seen on a phone) running cm7, and havent had issues with swype since last night.
Will report back if it happens again/my phone craps out. Fingers crossed!
spoke too soon. got home and while typing while the phone was charging i got this:
it seemed really bad, but what ive noticed is sometimes its worse than others, so its not just good or bad, but varying degrees of bad.
Battery life seems fixed, but i cant learn to live with this either. I might try to swap it at radioshack before by 14 (or 30 days) is up.
im telling you, its the charger. im actually using my old moto charger an i havent had any problems
for me it does it when my phone is plugged in charging
agree with some now. Ive only noticed it when plugged in.
Is this rom specific, or does it happen to every rom? I sill have a month to exchange if i need to.
Im using the newest CM7 KANG build btw
This generally happens with non original chargers, feeding the wrong current and driving the touch sensor insane, is what I've heard... That explanation worked for me. No erratic behaviour with original charger, but crazy behaviour with the blackberry charger...

Can also occur with the original charger if plugged into noisy power.
I almost thought my Infuse was defective when I first got it because I tried to charge it using the factory charger on an inverter - that combo made the touchscreen VERY unhappy (as in, unusable, you couldn't even unlock the phone)
Factory charger in a real wall outlet was fine.
I've had the same kind of problem before when I was using my cousin's droid x charger(probably wasn't the best idea any way). It would cause swype to get really unhappy, even worse than yours. I have not experienced it with the stock charger but then again I rarely use my phone while it is plugged in.
hmmmm, well currently using my captivate wall charger/usb cord. Ill have to try it with the original when i get a chance to switch them.
They looked exactly the same to me.
If this does end up being the case, where can i buy a stock usb cord, if i need extras?
Mine does it while plugged in with the stock charger. its almost impossible to text sometimes while its plugged in.
anyone considering returning phone? Is this cause for concern? Do all phones do this?
My Atrix was even worse at that...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
It may be more of a function of how "clean" your wall power is.
As I said - mine works fine on the stock charger at home, but it basically froze the touchscreen when connecting the stock charger to an inverter.

I had the exact experience with my GSII. Took it out of the box on the way home with it, plugged it into an inverter while I fired it up the first time, and thought I had gotten a defective phone. Touching the screen to slide off the stock lockscreen it looked like I was shaking all over the place. Typing was impossible. The stock charger did the same. I also got no in call audio, but that could have been from the touch screen being freaked out by any slight touch. Unplugged the phone and it was perfectly fine.
I later found one of my old USB chargers did the same thing on wall power. I'm now using a USB lighter plug charger on the go and it works fine. The inverter I have is an older black and decker 400watt and it tests out to be as good as it ever was. Must be something in samsung phones that really dislikes anything but a nice clean sine wave power output.
Hi folks,
I bought a used SG2 for a friend recently but it’s having some issues…
As soon as the phone arrived I plugged into the PC and rooted it, along with flashing latest stock firmware.
That all went smoothly but as I was setting up Google etc I noticed it gets really hot both when charging and also when in use. It also discharges really quickly, even with all sync and data connections turned off. I’d read about stock JB not being the best so decided to install Resurrection Remix, however was still running hot and discharging far too quickly (also tried with no SD card, just to make sure it wasn’t a Media Scanner issue).
It also drains whilst charging too. For example, last night it got to 92% whilst powered off, then when I checked later it was at 88%... so I unplugged it before bed when I woke up it was completely dead. Now it doesn’t seem to charge at all. This is on original battery and a brand new one…. both won’t charge. I’ve tried different chargers, different cables, different USB sockets etc etc. Also tried leaving the battery out of a while, but all to no avail.
I have just ordered a new USB port from eBay, to see if there is there is a problem charging… but beyond that I guess I still need to figure out why it’s heating up so much evenw hen doing nothing. When it was still powering on, checking CPU Spy tells me it’s not running at max CPU or anything, and Wakelock Detector isn’t reporting anything abnormal.
The phone is currently plugged into my PC but I know it's not charging as it's cool to touch and pressing the power button doesn't display the battery icon.
We have another S2 in the family (rooted and running an old JB NeatROM) and whilst battery life isn’t the best, it can easily last most of the day on standby. It also doesn’t get hot like this one does.
Any ideas what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?
Cheers,
Lee
Take the charged battery from the other s2 in the house and put it in. Does it power up? Go into download mode? Recovery?

Thanks for the the suggestion.
I don't have the other S2 to hand unfortunately, plus as that one is working fine I wouldn't want to risk damaging it's battery in this faulty unit.
I've ordered an external battery charger too though, which should be here Friday.
The ext charger won't go to waste but I'd try the battery first as I don't think it will damage it. Terminal's look OK? Testing should be fine.

I'll probably get the ext charger before I have access to the other S2
The terminals look ok, nice and clean... and the USB socket looks a little grubby but no more so than my other phones.
Let's say for a moment that I do manage to get the batteries charged and the phone to power on again... do you have any idea what might be causing it to heat up so much? I did try setting governor to Conservative and set the max CPU to 1000MHz rather than 1200MHz, but it was still getting hot and draining quickly. Again, this is with nothing running in the background, no SD card and all 3G/Wifi etc turned off.
Thanks
Get it running and install BBS . better battery States. See from there what's running in the background.

Yeah mate, BBS is one of my "first install" apps along with Wakelock Detector, CPU Spy, Root Explorer and Titanium Backup
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to install it on this S2 before the problems started to appear.
Will report back once ext charger / new USB port arrives
I'm determined not to waste 60 quid on this thing, even if I have to spend a bit more to get it working!
Given that you've tried different firmware and ROMs I think you can rule out software issues. I *think* you're going down the right path by replacing the USB socket/board assembly...... Just make sure you're putting the correct version in......there are 4 non interchangeable versions of this part.....

Well.....that *looks* right, but then all the versions of the board *look* the same..... It's the 'rev' number on the board you have to watch for.....
See this guide I created.....

it'll show how to tell the boards apart......

Thanks again Keith, that is an excellent guide! Very informative.
The one pictured on eBay has GT-I9100 REV 2.2 R.B54 B on the board and looking at some other eBay and Amazon items, most appear to be selling Rev2.2 boards.

Here’s a Rev 1.5 though…
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Connector-C...400688905&sr=1-9&keywords=i9100+charging+port
..and a Rev 0.2
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vktech-Char...00688905&sr=1-21&keywords=i9100+charging+port
I notice some of the Rev2.2 boards have different alphanumeric numbers below the rev (like R.B54 on the one I bought), does that make a difference too?
Knowing my luck this model will have a Rev that no one sells! I’ll check tonight after work, so fingers crossed for a Rev2.2!
Cheers
I'm not entirely sure what the other numbers are.....my guess is they're probably batch numbers or something similar......
The important numbers to match are the "rev version" numbers.....
In my experience (having repaired this issue on 2 S2s) the rev2.3 is the most commonly used version....but hey....you might be lucky....

Well Sod's Law strikes, I have a Rev 2.3
I've messaged the seller to see if they have them, but have also ordered another from a different seller just in case.
Ah...bad luck fella.....it might have worked if you'd ordered a 2.4 to replace a 2.3.....newer designs *might possibly* have some backwards compatibility.... but I strongly doubt that older versions are forwards compatible.
And don't listen if the seller tries to tell you that the rev version doesn't matter.....most sellers aren't aware that there is more than one version of the board, and will probably base their reply on that incorrect information.......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Replaced the circuit last night, was really easy. The phones are like Lego compared to HTC!
After rebuilding the phone it did initially recognise the charger, and started to charge the battery however after a while I noticed it had depleted again (charging whilst off). Charging was also extremely slow. It also wouldn't charge properly when switched on... would go up then down again.
The ext. charger also arrived so I've just popped in a fully charged battery to see how it lasts (took forever to charge that too!). Hopefully wont get hot and drain rapidly like before but we'll see.
I'll report back later, but at the moment I'm thinking about cutting my losses and selling it for spares or repair :crying:
The plug on the end of the charger *might* be worn too....this will also cause poor connection during charging......the whole micro USB plug/socket arrangement is (IMO) pathetically fragile for what these manufacturers want it to do......

Between home and work I have HTC, Samsung, LG and Sennheiser micro-USB cables, mostly new too... so probably safe to rule that out.
The phone has now been on battery for 4hrs 20min, and has only lost 8% battery in stand-by (WiFi on for the last hour or so too), so that's a step in the right direction! Temps seem normal as well.
Also, remember the Rev 2.2 I accidentally ordered before realising that variants existed? Well it turned up this afternoon and it's actually a Rev 2.4! Only difference I can see if the rubber thing is missing from the mic. Might give it a try later.
Thanks again for the help Keith!
No problems fella......
Putting the rev2.4 in shouldn't hurt.... as I said, I *think* there is backwards compatibility....
If that doesn't help, try going back to stock JB again. But this time root and debloat it. That is what I am running at the moment, and this is what I get from a full charge.....

If that doesn't help.....have you thought of flashing a CM ROM?...the most recent one I tried was Markox89's linaro/sabermod CM11.....good on battery and pretty much bug free.....

Cheers Keith, that's impressive stats!
Well the phone seems to have somehow fixed itself! Not only did the battery keep going all night, it allowed me to connect to the PC and transfer files, and also charged from the PC whilst the phone was powered on. Tested with the wallcharger and all seemed normal too. Maybe the batteries just needed the boost from the ext. charger to get them going since they were both completely drained?
I flashed Wanam JB but wasn't really keen on the super stock look and feel so then flashed NeatROM JB which is much better.
My friend actually decided he wants to keep his crappy old brick phone but at least now I can sell the S2 in good faith knowing that it works
I'd be tempted to keep it as a backup....I still have my first smartphone (galaxy W) safely stored away for just that purpose.
And from my point of view....I personally would be loathed to part with something that I'd invested time, effort and money into to bring back to life.....I know at the end of the day it's just a piece of tech and an asset, but for me, if I'd done what you've done....it'd be (I dunno) more personal than that......

I tried to replace the cracked screen on my i545 and wound up messing up the lcd/digitizer. The phone boots and is recognized on the PC but the screen is black. Replacing the lcd would be $80 to $100...not worth it.
BUT...I was wondering if I found a broken S4 for maybe $40 or less (bad mother board, bad esn, etc...) that has a working screen, could I just swap out the guts of my phone to the other one? Would it have to be an i545, or would one from AT&T, Cricket, TMobile, Straight Talk work? I only need a working screen and believe what I want to do is feasible. Let me know if I'm off base or not.
Thanks for the feedback.
I did this with the galaxy avant with no issue. so yeah, you can just frankenstein it.

so long as its anouther i545 the i545 and i9500/9505 are differen't
IIRC some parts of the ATT/TMO versions work on the VZW mobo but the home button won't work. Also the motherboard on the i545V has a ever so slightly different shape than the i9500/505
Another thing you can try is find a local repair shop and offer to buy functioning but cracked S4 LCDs. There are no compatability problems between the i9500/i9505 screens and the VZW screens (source: my S4 is using an ATT screen).
This is going to be harder than I thought...everyone wants wayyyy toooo much for their old broken i545.
Found a dead I545 on ebay with a perfect screen for $40. Took a chance and offered $20 - he accepted. Yay! Put my motherboard in and it powered right up. So sweet and so easy! Having problems re-attaching the antenna cable but will get that done after work tonight. Most importantly, I don't have to use my cruddy, old LG F6 anymore. I didn't realize how SLOOOOWWW that thing is.
It's got me wondering though...which version of Android does the MDK bootloader run. Found a guy selling used motherboards supposedly running Android 4.2.2 - could be a cheap way to swap out for the elusive MDK bootloader.
Dang...new problem! Got the antenna connected and I can make and receive calls...I just can't hear the phone ring. The earpiece and microphone work but for some reason the speaker is not working. So i can't hear music, ringtones, or notifications. I've swapped in my original speaker that was working just fine but now that one fails too. WTF???
Any advice??? I refuse to sink any more money into this project. If I can't get sound I'll sell it for parts and buy something better that I can have more ROM flexibility.
Thanks.
Almost there. The speaker contacts were not making a clean connection. Another forum suggested taking the speaker off and prying the gold contacts on the USB connector up a bit. Did that and sound started working right away. Unfortunately, in my haste, I snapped the red antenna cable and lost my signal. Replacement cables are ordered for $3. So I'm into this rebuild for a total of $31 ($40 if you count the original screen I bought but didn't use since I ruined the LCD). So, for a little aggravation and $31 I get a nice working phone again. Doubt I'd get anything new for that price.

Not sure if that's sarcastic or not
Anyway, got my new antenna cables installed and the phone works awesome! The whole process was actually easy but tedious. The actual process would have just been swapping motherboards but the speaker threw me for a loop (which was easily fixed).
No sarcasm at all! I'm trying to do something similar, but with the main board
I took the frame and display from my bricked I545 OF1 and put the main board from one with a broken display that was discarded. The results were outstanding.

Basically all I really did was switch the mainboard as well. Before I started I thought there was more to it than that, but like bg260 wrote, simply swapping the mb from one to another is all that needs to be done. Since it was apart I swapped the usb/sound board because I didn't know any better at the time, and I thought it was related to my speaker/sound issue. Essentially, I did the same thing as bg260 with a bunch of extra (unneeded) steps.

It has to be the same carrier though. A Sprint Mobo will not fit (completely) in a Verizon box. I've tried. Subtle differences that become huge when considering the limited space inside these devices.
Well, this was short lived. I was texting with a friend Saturday just fine. An hour later I checked my phone & could not swipe the screen open. The screen was totally unresponsive...couldn't answer calls, reboot the phone...nothing! The power button worked fine as did the capacitive buttons, and the screen displayed, but would not respond to any touch. Pulled the battery for a reboot - no love. Reset the phone - no dice. Odined back to stock - nada. IT'S DEAD!
That sucks! I had no functioning backup phone either so I bought a Moto G4. I was not going to sink anymore time or money into the S4, although I really liked it despite the unlockable bootloader. Marshmellow is going to take some getting used to.
Thanks to everyone here for all the help. Good luck to everyone.

Already did that. I plan to keep it just in case I can find another cheap "for parts" S4 on ebay. If so, I'll have the S4 as a backup.
After sitting for a week powered off, I decided to turn on the S4 for giggles...AND IT'S WORKING NOW. Been on for 24+ hours and all touch response seems to be fine. Very weird. Now I'm not sure what to do with it. Not sure I can trust it to keep working?
