Prime rattles when shaken - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I've had this problem for a while now, but whenever my Prime is upside down, such as when it is on my lap and it is charging, I want the cable away from me, I hear this rattle whenever the screen is touched not too hard, but with little force. It seems to sound like it is coming from above the speaker. What could this be? Should I RMA or will it be able to be fixed by myself? Let me know if you have this problem as well.

almost expected to see some reference to James Bond here.

First things first, stop shaking your prime
Have you noticed any odd functioning of your prime, diminished response from speakers, wifi cutting in and out more than usual, dead spots on the digitizer, etc?
Have you dropped your prime at any point? if nothing is malfunctioning its probably some insignificant portion of the MOBO that has become detached possibly one of the clips on a connector or the like. I would definitely RMA your device if there are no signs of physical damage. Make sure you document your prime very well with photographs and/or video as some repair centers are... less than careful with the device.Send a copy of the photographs/video with the prime to the RMA facility in a clearly marked envelope along with the prime, make sure to keep copies for yourself just in case they try and play any games. Additionally make sure you talk to a customer service rep on the phone and get the issue escalated as parts should not just be falling apart inside the prime like that and it should be dealt with immediately. Make sure you make it clear to them that is unacceptable but in a polite and professional manner. This is the best way to get them to expedite your RMA.

I have this, but its more like a very feint click when I tap the screen. Only occasionally.

i know what you mean , i think . its not so loud on my prime but apart from hearing i can actually feel that its loading the battery, when i stroke the back gently, or especially on the dock on the aluminium around the touchpad.... some weird feeling in my finger like its leaking power or something .. and it makes a gentle noise ..
had this on tf101 too btw..

LOL, shaken but not stirred.

I have never dropped it, unless lightly tossing it onto my bed counts. But I doubt it. I have also have had wifi cut outs more than usual, but I have had this rattle for a while. Since about when they announced the GPS dongle. I think the cut outs may just be the .28 update.

I have the very same issue too.
I'm in Australia, and I RMA'd it and when I got it back after almost a month and a half ... it was still the same -.-
So in my case, a month and a half without the tablet, the issue still exist.
However, I don't find any unusual behavior with the prime though. It still works like it should.

I have the same exact issue its on the bottom right when you tap it, theres a shaking rattling noise. Scares me a little but doesn't affect performance or anything so i'm not worrying at all.

I sent mine for a DOA assessment, not an RMA and after nearly a month still not back. In Melbourne and not even JB Hi-Fi can contact them.

I think the rattle is due to the dock locking mechanism on both sides of the bottom of the device.
I've noticed it as well (although not when touching the screen, but when moving the tablet itself).

I think it may be this, but it happens only on one side, And it also doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, its when the tablet is being used upside down.

Loose Keyboard

I just got my mini pro last Friday and it was great. Then I saw the forums over the weekend about the electrostatic noise and realized mine was making an even louder noise than the rest of the people. Had my unit replaced yesterday and now the noise is minimal. Even the issue I had with menus closing on their own is gone (screen issue I guess). The thing I noticed now with my new unit is that the bottom part with the keyboard is a bit loose connected to the top screen part. Like whenever I type using the screen it sometimes creeks or moves. But this doesn't always happen. Sometimes it doesn't creek, sometimes it does. My first unit was pretty solid and didn't move at all. Anyone else experiencing this? Is this a factory defect? I'm okay with it mostly because this unit was better than my last one.
Sent from my SK17i using xda premium
It is most likely a defect. I've read reviews and they all say the keyboard is solid. Mine is nice and sturdy as well.

Yep the keyboard is solid when I use it. But when I type using the on screen keyboard it creeks sometimes.

Well in that case maybe not. Mine doesn't do that but it sounds pretty normal. Is it just a faint creek?

Yeah it's just a faint creek. Like the top part of the phone slightly doesn't touch the bottom. Well, maybe you're right that it might be a manufacturing fault but proving this to a warranty claim for factory defect might be hard. :-(

My Prime is creaking! WTF ?!

Well I hoped that Asus after TF101 realized that the have to improve the build quality of their tablets. Imagine my madness when I discovered my new Prime is creaking...!!!
A little below of Top left corner of prime. God.....
TF101 was creaking but I never would thought that TF201 will be creaking too!
I thought it will be as good made as Ipad....
Well Asus - this is the last tablet I have bought from you...
Also got a question about the screen. Some times I can sense and see that despite of auto brightness off that the screen adjusts its brightness by itself. It is a little change but my sharp eyes can see this...
Do you have a similar thing?
Contrast changes dynamically when set to power saving mode.
TF201 / XDA premium
Yes I know. But I use all modes and feel the same that sometimes the screen changes a little the brightnes.
my prime seems pretty solid. maybe the glue on your glass panel needs to still set more. Man, Asus has really came up with hit or misses on a tablet being flawed or not. this is a great device though. at the area where you said you hear creaking, does it look like the panel is not flush there? where did you buy it from? you can always exchange it. I know some don't like having to send it off n wait for another one. hearing some of these panel or touchscreen issues be making me check mines on the spot. luckily mines don't show those symptoms.
Yes the brightness changes based on the lighting of the area at the time; it's called auto-adjusting. That is normal and I like that.
Mine is loose and not flush with the device on the bottom right but it is not a huge deal to me

If you push in on the glass in this spot does your volume rocker move?
no it does not
That sucks man. I would be really annoyed if i had a creak in my prime. I have to wonder if they rushed through fixing the wifi issues and damaged some of the primes while in the process. I have seen all of the pics with the scratched bezels that look like the techs were using a flat-head screwdriver to pry these things apart. I'm not sure if mine never went for repair or if the tech that did mine just had the right tools and skills but it seems to be a perfect specimen physically at least. I would love to read an inside account of this product release.

The brightness changes when using this app huh? When u touch the screen to scroll it quickly brightens then goes to normal? It seems like the xda app not the prime
Modded by MBOK
I have an HTC G2, and whenever I touch the screen on a lighter background it changes the tone of the background to a pinkish color. It does it in XDA app as well as web browser, almost anything with a white-ish background. Sounds similar to what your experiencing, it only happens when you touch the screen, right?
the problem with the self adjusting brightness accurs while playing or watching youtube. It doesnt matter if am toutching screen or using dock keybord or just a mouse. I do not know if it is on purpose.
Did you notice the same issue?

I do. None of the other issues but noticed this brightness geekin out with the xda app
Ugh. Mine starting creaking today. It is like the left hand side of the screen has separated something. The right side feels solid. The left has flex to it - like the glass gives ever so slightly, resulting in a very annoying 'click'.
This really sucks, because otherwise the device is fine (no stuck pixels, wifi and GPS works). Guess I'll wait a week or so for Best Buy to get some local stock before taking it in for exchange.

I noticed that my xda app and all Tapatalk apps change brightness for some reason when pressing things I went into the settings on the app and changed the theme to dark works great now. I I also get a creak where my volume rocker is which is cool with me I figure its just because the gap where the rocker is I just don't press it

My TF101 had this and my TF201 does wiggle a bit in the top left. It makes sense with the volume controls there.

I noticed my screen pushes in slightly from the side edge

Hey guys,
I noticed if I put pressure on the left side of the tablets edges, the screen pushes in slightly. It very very slight
Is that something to worry about
Mine does the same thing.. Not too worried about it....yet.

I have the same with original Transformer. I noticed it while trying to check if it creaks (after half a year of having the device). I think it's nothing to worry about.
thanks guys!
Mine does the same thing. The trouble is that when it deflects, it makes a slight 'click' noise that is very annoying.
This is on the left side (i.e. volume rocker side), right?
Mine has it on both the left and the right side. Very slight though. No noise but a little concerning but good to hear that others have the same problem.

I feel like I might return mine if it creaked or the screen had movement. One of the things I love about this tablet and now the dock is how solidly it is built. I have to wonder if all of these creaks and loose screens are a result of careless techs during the wifi correction.

I hate you for mentioning this.
I noticed it the other day, but I wanted to ignore it.
watch for dust getting under the glass tho.. I have a few pieces stuck under it already.
I have the same issue. If you hold the prime in landscape (as it is supposed to be), I can feel the screen push in on the top right and also the bottom right of center (from where you would dock it). Not to concerned right not, but as another poster said, would be worried about it if dust and stuff got in under the screen.
My bevel seems loose around the front facing camera, as if they've not stuck it down properly. Seems ok elsewhere though.

How bad is your light bleeding

I know ips screens tend to bleed and mine has a few spots on the left side. But how much is expected?

The only time I notice it is on a jet black screen and it's super minimal there 1 inch wide x .25 deep.. Very faint glow
Non-issue
Very minor here. Can only see it if in a dark room AND thinking to look for it on a uniform screen... even at that... minor.
Two minor spots on the bottom right corner. Ones a little bit bigger than the other.
Right side, and bottom middle screen bleed. It is minor but still annoys me at night before bed.
Judging on how the bleed is from tablet to tablet, I blame poor action on maintaining quality manufacturing and testing. Might just be because there is very high demand as the first quad core and ASUS is just trying to keep up.
I have a feeling that tablets sold in about a month from now will be of better build quality then those being sold today.
Good thing I decided to wait and just buy the TP with keyboard dock. I figure I'll keep watch on updates for the tablet and by the time I go to buy one, the tablet will be more stable.

Think again, the original transformer tablet still has horrible screen bleed and lose casing. These were issues when the TF101 first came out and have not been resolved to this day.
I had one on release (TF101), it had bad screen bleed and the back panel was falling off. I returned it, now just last month I decided to give them another go.. Guess what? Even worst screen bleed and still the same loose falling off back panel.. The issues were the same on the two TF101 units i purchased last month.. returned both for full refund.

Has anyone just considered that... ASUS doesn't make a good quality tablet? I've been considering Acer for a while. When I spend 500$ on something, like anyone, I want the damn thing to work. I would hate backlight bleed and crappy Wifi. Then again, 500$ for anything is a little cheap. I guess you get what you pay for. But hey, everyone likes a cheap tablet, eh?
Another thought: If the backlight bleeds that means it's hardware and ASUS can't do much to fix that. Anyone know how bad Samsung tablets are? I'm trying to think of some manufacturers who've been making tablets a little longer than ASUS.
Oh, and can anyone post a picture of their screen bleed? I'm very interested to see how bad it is. The quad core tegra 3... it beckons.

Unfortunately there are many quality control issues with this model.
I too had the left side glass raised and unglued. Add that to the bad screen bleed, yellowish tint, lint inside the glass, dead pixels, no gps bad wifi, blah blah....return it after 2 days. Never had a product so badly build by asus (or any other co.)like this one.

Lets hope others like samsung can release a dock like the prime.

Is the entire front assembly flexing out, or the glass itself is actually coming up from the plastic frame? Of course you may not be able to tell.
IMO I'd try again until I got a better one, because they are out there. Could try RMA'ing it for them to fix it (run a chance of it being broken and blamed on you or outright replaced with a newer unit, just in a longer amount of time than returning). But if you're willing to open the Prime after a while, then you could probably fix it yourself in a matter of minutes.

Yeah, I stand by my opinion then, I'd swap it out or return and buy another. I don't think it will get worse, but either it wasn't adhered to the plastic frame properly, or one of the little tabs that helps keep it closed was broken in the factory/during shipping. Not knowing which one means the longer you wait the more risky it becomes to claim it as a manufacturing defect.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD via my tethered HTC Vision
I would also swap out this Prime for another one.
There have been reports of people's screens suddenly cracking, and all kinds of while theories why. Personally I think that it has to so with the screens being warped by a broken clip, or a slightly bent Prime. If your screen sticks out enough to cause a noticeable flex it might be at risk for one of those sudden cracks. Exchange it while you are still within your return period.
Swap it out. It will either; get worse as time goes on, or you will be annoyed by it eventually.
Asus needs to clean up these QC issues, the more returns, the more fixes they will put into their manufacturing process.

Well, that's how most would do it lol not ASUS.
They'll keep the exact same production going on and just keep swapping them out until we just don't even want to try anymore or actually luck out with a device some random Chinese/Taiwanese worker was proud to finish up.
Look at anything they make and sell, and you'll find their crappy QC/QA is pretty universal and normal CS to be a joke.
