Brown Screen - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I try not to be too anal, but the brown screen, particularly when in Lock screen with a black wallpaper, and when in some apps, like Astro, is getting to me
I am in my 14 day period, and my friend Macky, who is a pro like a lot of you, said, no that is not normal. Take it back
Do you agree with him on the screenshot attached
Thank You
Eric

You do know that when you take a screenshot to show us faulty hardware it actually looks fine for us because our hardware isn't faulty.
You need to take a pic of your screen.
Although what's up with the 'smudging' in the bottom right hand corner of the screenshot?

I am not sure what you mean. whether u are looking at it o n your phone or puter, the quality of the picture, in this case, sound etc....is only as good as the source. so that confuses me.
moving on, yes that is what i mean the corner and the whole right side The lock screen And in Astro

What I mean is that if your screen is **** I can't see it if you post a screenshot.
I don't know what the problem with the smudging is, if I were you I'd exchange it .

If you turn off the ripple effect in the lock screen settings it should fix that. At least for the lock screen.

Thanks nod and dls
I did turn off the lock screen. And I can't see it. Bit only to the degree that that screen is not there. If I could see that screen with no lock then I would know
But attached is another screenshot (no other phone or camera. I am sorry)
Of Astro and the right side still behaves the same way

Looking at the image linked in your post, I'm with Mopral on this one - seems like a skin/theme issue. Its using the Fade from left to right effect (similar to that on Windows XP).

I didn't mean to turn off the lock screen, just the ripple effect. When ripple effect is on it distorts the screen especially on dark wallpaper.
t-mobile sgs3 stock rom/rooted

Now we are getting somewhere. I appreciate all of your patience
So I found the ripple effect, turned it off. And waaa laa.
Maybe about 98% and there may be hardware or software differences as to why screens may ne different color in different areas
But the last problem.
Astro. It still is like that. I dont think It is skin. It is on the right side even more obvious but mainly when transferring files
Any continued help or flat out declaring it is definitely not a problem is appreciated. I know a few of you have posted a few times and given a lot of your time
But I would like the reassurance it one of the pros on xda
Dont get me wrong I dont want to exchange it. But dont want any flaws

Just install astro on my phone:
-open astro: no issue
-try to transfer some files: black/white gradiant on the transfer pop-up (same as on your screen shot)
So, for me, it is just how stock astro is skinned...

Weird Flicker when turning on the screen?

Hi everyone!, I'm having this really odd issue with my S2. I've only had it about a week now and this could have been happening all along though I didn't notice it.
Basically If the screen is off and I hit the power button is has this really slight flicker as the screen comes on. It's almost like a single line down the screen right before the wallpaper appears. It's also right-justified on the screen and always in the same spot.
Has anyone else had this issue? It can be reproduced by simply hitting the power button to shut the screen off then hitting it again to turn it on.
Thanks!
Edit: Also the screen doesn't always fade on. 3/5 times it will just "instant-on" where I'll hit the power button and it will instantly show the lock screen tile instead of "fading" into it. Does this happen to anyone else or does it ALWAYS fade in?
I'm probably just being paranoid but I'd rather replace the phone quickly to avoid actually sending it to manufacturer.
Thanks again!
You should take a video of it so we can see if it is normal. I don't see what you describe, and not sure the phone is supposed to "fade in" to the lock screen. Mine is always instant on.
I once flashed to Litening ROM and it had that flicker (lightning style) as a feature I guess, is it the same problem OP stated?
Regards.
Saw it once two days ago, vertically on the extreme left of the screen. Haven't seen it since, but it was very rapid - blink-and-you'll-miss-it job. Can't say it worries me. On Revolution FWIW.

sorry I can't take a video since this is the only device that I own that is capable of taking video.
anyway, yeah - it's really quick. And it's vertically down the screen. I kind of assumed that it was the backlight turning on but I'm pretty certain that happens on the sides right?
Right now it's 10:00 and this issue happens right where the "1" is on the clock at the top of the screen. So starting from that 1 all the way to the bottom.
Again it's REALLY fast - but it's noticeable, I'd have no problem showing it to someone in front of me. It just looks like a single line about the same width as the "1" as well. It almost seems like the one tiny line is showing before the rest of the screen, like if the screen were a "loading process" that line would be the first thing to appear before the rest gets backlit.
Not sure if it matters but it's the model I9100M from Virgin, just incase they are made differently somehow.
This phone has no backlight. The LED's are all individually lit.

Hmm, not the same problem as me - certainly nothing to do with the time here - it was in the afternoon when it happened with me, and my lockscreen clock's in 12 hour format. Clock's also at the bottom of my screen.
Been trying to reproduce it, and can't.

No no, I wasn't saying that the clock had anything to do with it, I was just trying to describe where the line appears on screen. I was also talking about the clock that appears at the very top, not the one on the lock screen. If I just continually tap the power button on and off I can see the "line" appear every time exactly in that spot.
It's pretty noticeable, unless you have the phone away from you - so if you don't see it then it probably isn't happening.
Does anyone think I should return this and get another? I don't really want to run into issues later and have to send to manufacturer. Is this problem big enough that I could get it replaced without issue?
Thank's for the replies!
Sorry, misunderstood. Definitely not my problem, I have no clock in the status bar.
If it happens every time, I'd probably return it if I was you - could be the precursor of something more serious.
Hi again, Thanks for the replies. I realized today that the issue is really only noticeable if you're in a dark room. Even in a semi-lit room it's almost unnoticeable which is probably why I hadnt seen it thus far.
If anyone wouldn't mind flicking the lights off and taking a look I'd appreciate it. If not I'll just return it.
thanks again forum!
I experience it too (at least I think we are talking about the same thing)..it's like it's stuttering and lagging after being in standby. So the first time it renders the lockscreen, the first few frames seem to be rendered at a different pace. If you turn the screen on after a good break, it'll likely do it, but after a few times in a row it instantly shows the screen.
Perhaps it relates to how big the wallpaper for the lockscreen is. I'm not sure, but I've had some huge 2mb pictures set as wallpapers for the lockscreen, and afterwards I think I decided to select a smaller image. I don't know if it was just a placebo effect, but anyways..it still does it with my current picture. I don't really care. You could try a different lockscreen from android market and see if it helps, but I think every SII suffers from this.
I have this exact issue too and it really annoys me! I also bought the phone from Virgin if that is relevant. It's a white streak on the left of the screen for me and only happens every so often. So what's the prognosis? A software fault? Hopefully fixed in a subsequent firmware update? Or a hardware fault worth repairing?

Strange white dots on the screen, dead pixles?

Hello
Yesterday at night when I was playing "another world" I noticed 2 unusal dots. The first one just above the search button does indeed move everytime I rotate the phone. Everytime I rotate the phone to left the dot appears but when I rotate it to the right, it comes back again, WTF? Anyone have this kind of issue? I have attached the pictures. Anyway to fix it?
EDIT: It doesn't seem to be dead pixles, it something else but I dont know what it is...it's moving when I rotate the phone and AFAIK dead pixles does not move.
Something else strange I have noticed is that everytime I close an app by clicking the "home button" for example Angry birds, the sound is still there. I need to close via the task manager in order to make the sound disappear. Not the sound of the game but a strange sound is still left
EDIT2: Is it possible that is water? Because I installed invisible shield some day ago...maybe little water got under the screen and is "floating"?
It won't be "water" cause water under/on the screen would never "rotate" with screen, I guess it's some "background" process that to monitor some action, and a minimum GUI was "1 pixel". So it a white dot

Did these dot only appear while you play this game or always on your display? Try to make a pure black(#000000) picture and view it as Full Screen mode, if it always appear, then it maybe some social apps or monitor like face recognition or gesture recognition services. If it only appear in these game, it maybe some social tools integrated in your games or cheating tools.
I guess it's posterior one, so just leave it.
If it's always exist, and you ARE a GEEK, then check every PROGRAMES on your Razr and figure out which/what perform this
If you're not a geek and it always exist, try to backup your system and data, then do a Factory Reset. Everythings goes well means it was some issues within some Apps you installed, If it still there, then it must been some issues in your integrated apps or some ROM issue
you can use es task manager's screen checker to check for dead pixels, it can also kill task, and manage startup tasks. I find it faster than razr's built in task manager.
I have no idea what that little white dot is, I also noticed it when I got my Razr back in November. On the bright side I can tell you that out of 4 Razrs I've had and my girlfriends 2 all 6 of them have had the white dot in that same spot. I don't think it's anything to be worried about. Also, neither me or my girlfriend use a screen protector that requires a solution to adhere so you can rule that out as well.

I just tried a pure black picture from the app "Dead pixel Detect and fix" and the white dote was still there. It is not just in games it's always there but most visible when there is a black background. I reall have no clue what program I should check, I thought it was watchdog tasker but I unistalled it and it's still there. I am using stock Rom 2.3.6 651.167.21.NonEFIGSretail.en.EU
Is there a way I can take backup when I am not rooted? I have not rooted the phone yet.

I'm beginning to think it's just an optical illusion brought on by glare and the capacitive buttons but who knows. It doesn't really bother me at all to be honest I just found it to be weird.

That means you have dead pixels. The other one at the corner of the screen is the shiny reflection from the phone design.
Bring it to a service center for an exchange, it looks like a big chunk of dead pixels at one spot.

I have emailed the store I bought it from, I think I now have had the phone in exactly 2 weeks. If its going in to repairs imo its not worth sending it. But if they exchange it then its ok. But the problem is I installed a Zagg shield on it...can I remove it and apply it on the new phone?

I don't know if you can take the screen protector off and swap it. I don't use one don't like them. Especially the wet install ones. Water and electric do not mix. Ever. Even in tiny amounts.
If it doesn't bother you just leave it. I'm just saying I wouldn't accept it. These devices are way too expensive to have any kind of defect however small.

I agree. I will definitely push the store to let them exchange it for me, even if it's one pixle a phone for 600$ should not have any damaged. About the screen protector **** it, if they exchange the phone for me I wont use one anymore.

Not sure what your pointing out with that image, but if your talking about the ghosting .. where the icons are still slightly visable after moving to a flat background colour then its pretty normal...
Image persistence like that after less that five minutes is not normal.
Power saving mode I'm guessing? And you need a better camera -.-"
Make a copy of your home screen by long pressing the previous app button in the task bar and post that.

I dunno, my Transformer never did anything like this.
I think the TFP saw what phone you were using and decided it didn't like you anymore. On a serious note that amount of screen burn isn't normal as mine doesn't do it at all. I know that i had two bright spots on my tab as if an led back light was too close to the screen and I thought I could live with it. 2 months later I sent it in last week for RMA I just couldn't deal with it. Since you just got it I would suggest an exchange at place of purchase before going to the RMA department which is a big PITA as you will see from some other threads.
Oh this certainly exists. If you don't see it, you need your eyes checked. I just ignore it, doesn't effect my experience.
I've only had an issue like this sometimes, but the stuff from the previous screen would go away in a few seconds. I'm not sure why yours is there for 5 minutes
Thanks for your input guys, took it back this morning. Walked out with an Acer A200 which is... tolerable I guess... and cheap.

need help

Hello there,
I have a problem that may look wired for some but it actually happend to my galaxy s2. I had a stock jeally bean, then I installed a jelly synap rom. I noticed that the display from the sides got smaller than before in the jeally bean. I came back to jeally bean but in vain. The display is not as big as it was. I tried every possible way; installing stock rom and stock recovery but they all failed. So PLEASE I need help.
Well that is weird. But you have now a smaller screen is the resolution also different or you cant see parts of the screen now?. I think your display has some problems then if you have it like that. Can you try this code in dialer on stock *#0*# can you post some pictures? Looks me like a hardware fault

Thanks for your reply. I think the problem has to do with the software not hardware as the display was good before installing the new rom. Also, When I tried the rom on another phone, the same happened. The display gets smaller from the sides of the phone. Regarding the code, I tried it and every thing seems good. The problem is in the sides of the phone.I can't post a picture until I get 10 posts.
I attached the picture. Please take a look at it and see if it is normal or the screen is smaller (from the sides) than usual.

Looks also normal to me but i cant see much difference if you have the stripes. Could you make on in a brighter light cause those screens from these days can be pretty black.
Download this white background in the attachment and open it. Then take something to measure the distance between the screen and the end of your phone left to right.
It should be something like4mm maybe a bit smaller so say 3-4. Could you measure that? If it is also 3-4 mm then it is good
Verstuurd vanaf mijn GT-I9100 met Tapatalk
thanks for your reply.I can't see your attachment but I could manage measure the display and find it 5.6 CM. I'm talking about the display width from left to right, the lighted area. Is this normal? if it is, then i'm going to have an eye test
wiaitng for your reply!

Always on notifcation?

Can anyone show me an example of how text notifications and others will work with always on when you receive it, I am used to having a notification light and I want to make sure this isn't a deal breaker for me.
if you use always on display no notification led appared. icons of the notification appears in the top of clock
In terms of "alerting" you to the phone, definitely not as good as led lights, because from distance it looks the same whether you have a notification or not, and nothing really pops out at you when you get new notification. But I still prefer it because you can see all the notifications you have by simply looking at the screen without turning it on or pressing anything
Will AoD cause issues with screen burn in? Does it stay in the same place or does it move around? And if it moves around, does it move to random locations or does it stay in the same exact locations?

Stays in same spot - but of course notification icons and clock constantly changing it slightly. I dont think its an issue due to how dim it is. There is a setting to make it bright, but it warns of battery drain. I have no need to make it bright though.

Lol yea to be honest when I first saw it in a different spot it didn't even occur to me that it might be a thing to prevent burn ins. I'd even admit to having shaken the phone a couple times to move it back once I couldn't find any settings for the clock location -_-...one of the stupider things I've done in 2017
