I did my first ever flash recently. I flashed omega, though before I flashed I used titanium and did a batch backup of apps+system data. Though after flashing and restoring apps only from titanium, nothing was on the homescreen except for the stock stuff. So I had to manually get apps and put them back onto the homescreen and in folders (massive headache).
I want to flash a new rom though is there a way of backing up and restoring so everything stays in the spot they were previously in before flashing?
I'd like to know this too.
the backup defaults to /sdcard/TitaniumBackup
that is internal sdcard
if you internal sdcard got wiped out, then nothing to restore. copy it out to a safe place.
If you are pretty sure your internal sdcard is not wiped out, use a file explorer and browse it, does it have files in it?
You can then go to TitaniumBackup , menu | preferences | backup folder location
if it is not pointing correctly, hit Detect
the select what is detected and "use the current folder"
I'd like to know this too. I have Titanium Backup too but am unsure how to utilise it fully. Right now I find myself having to manually configure all my application settings after flashing a new ROM.
In my (limited) experience, Titanium won't restore apps to your home screen. It can only restore your apps and their data/settings. When you install a new rom if you do a full wipe you lose your home screen, but if you do a partial wipe (dalvik) you do not. If you are flashing a new release of the same rom you can usually do a partial wipe but if you are flashing a new rom you will probably have to do a full wipe.
But I'm no expert.

I think you understood wrong. I'm not asking about the location of the backup file. I'm asking about how I can do a backup and restore so once I flash a new rom I don't have to put all my apps back onto home screen and in folders again. I want it to restore do that all the apps and widgets stay in the position they were before I flashed.

yeah, now I realised that your problem wasn't the backup folder.
Well, for Apex Launcher that I use, if I backup Apex itself with data, I restore it using Titanium and I get back the icons on home screen, and all widgets.
Even before I restore the apps itself! So I start seeing icons that are actually unclickable.
Not sure about Touchwiz, what to backup.
I've been using Mybackup Root from Google Play which can backup the homescreen which works fairly well. The one thing that didn't work in my case was the widgets didn't show as supposed.

Just use a launcher that has a home screen backup facility(most!) ...I use nova
.....and now you are on a custom Rom, do a nandroid backup from recovery(full system image)
ok i think I found out how to do it with titanium backup.
I've been doing some searching and people have said that in the titanium backup there is a file called TWLauncher and other have said its called TouchWizLauncher. On my backup it has Touchwiz Home is this the same as TWLauncher and TouchWizLauncher?
Im guessing it is but just wanted to make sure.

I think it's something about the Titanium Backup I was using on CM7 using the wrong storage, i.e. Internal rather than external or vice-versa. I restored the backup and went back to stock asap, as I would hate to lose all my apps and data, but I would like to give CM7 a try. How can I do this?

Go to Settings-->CyanogenMod Settings-->Application, Then tick the "Use Internal Storage. Reboot Then try it.

I'm no genius, but I think the proper place for this would be the atrix-dev-team's Project page for the development of CyanogenMod rom - as they have their own issue reporting system hosted via google code found here:

Again, I'm in no way a genius, but this is where I would think that you would have the best visibility and chance to get this resolved/answered by a developer on the atrix-dev-team.

It is something with the naming of the storages in CM7. Probably the titanium is looking for the backup folder in the wrong storage type.
Possible solution for that (Works for me...):
In the first screen in titanium backup press MENU>Preferences>Backup folder location>Press the Detect button, choose "Whole device" then the program will scan all your storages and if it finds an other backup folder it will tell you as well as the amount of backups in each folder, choose the one with the highest number of backups, this will probably be the one you are looking for.
Once you chose the correct folder press "Use the current folder".

This is not an issue folks. TiBu IS looking in the wrong place.
Do as was previously mentioned, then instead of scanning the whole device which can take forever, manually locate the backup folder. Mine is always set to A folder called Titanium Backup on my external SDCard. Easy to find.
And don't attempt to restore any system data.
If everyone would quit worry where one post & just help person this be better form..
In Titanium Backup when running Cyanogenmod look under ..
Menu
Preferences
Backup Folder location
Click "Detect"
Then it should give "Option: to search "Whole Device" on phone then when it fines Backup.
Click "Use Current Folder"
Also you can change setting in Cyanogen Setting to just use internal...

I've been messing with my ATT SGS2 for a few months. I'd like to start from scratch now that I know which Rom I'm going to want to keep. I unrooted my phone and set it back to stock. However, I still have all the downloaded files, pictures, etc in the /sdcard folder. If I want to keep my apps only, can I delete EVERYTHING in the /sdcard folder(except for titanium backup folder) or are there some system files in the /sdcard folder that should not be deleted?
Some apps store their data in there, but usually re-create them on next boot of the app. It would be safe to say that you can delete most of the things, but I would manually delete them by mounting it as a mass storage on your computer and delete through that interface.

You can delete the /sdcard contents if you want.
Any stock apps, files or folders will be automatically re-created when you
flash the stock rom. If you want to save your market apps, then just do a
backup using titanium full backup first.

WARNING: Only use the following instructions if you at sure you want to reset your phone back completely to out of the box conditions and you have everything important to you backed up in a separate location from your phone.
If you would like to start from scratch you can enter the following number into the dialer
*2767*3855#
This will reset your phone to stock out of the box conditions, including wiping resting the internal sdcard.
Edit: FYI, the only thing that I know this dialer code will not reset to stock is the download mode binary counter - to reset that requires a usb download mode jig.

Do a little more reading on how to use TiBU before you rely on this advice. One major caveat is that you never restore system data with TiBU, especially when going to a different ROM from the one you did the backup on. All kinds of bad things will happen if you do. The same can be said when switching phones. Some of my apps that I restored from my Captivate did not work properly on my SGSII. I had to reinstall them from the Market and then restore their data separately. Luckily I did not lose my Angry Birds progress.

I plan to wipe everything and reinstall some apps that I had. In order to reinstall the app data, all I need to do is save the Titanium Backup folder to my computer and then move it back over after the wipe and Rom install, correct?

If you have an external sdcard you can move or copy the titanium backup
there too. As long as you do not manually specify formatting the external
sdcard the titanium backup folder will remain fully intact.
Just remember when you do a titanium restore to only use the
"Restore Missing Apps with Data" option only.
Stay away from the option to restore "Missing Apps+All System Data".

Here is the problem. I kept a backup from my stock firmware on Titanium Backup (stored it on my pc and deleted it from my phone so i would have more space)and switched to CM7. I then had to get a new phone because the current one at the time had a defective battery and fried the system completely. So, i put my backup from my pc onto my new device and ran TB but restoring my apps was not an option there. any way to solve this??
What I have done in the past is copied all the files INSIDE the TITANIUM BACKUP folder on my PC, put them onto my externalsdcard into a folder/the same folder name "TitaniumBackup", put external sdcard back into phone and boot it up. Once it is up open Titanium Backup, hit menu button, preferences, Backup Folder Location, it should NORMALLY point to mint/sdcard/titaniumbackup, HIT the back button twice until your at mnt/ , then scroll down/pick your external sdcard (emmc if your on cm7), scroll down/choose TitaniumBackup folder, then HIT use the current folder, now hit the back button (it may ask if you want to move the backups to a new location, I don't think it really matters though). the titanium backup app will act like it is starting the app over again. next hit the menu button, choose BATCH, scroll down to RESTORE MISSING APPS WITH DATA, you can unchecked restore app data so it JUST RESTORES the app if you want to be safe, choose/unclick ANY apps you do not want to restore or only check the apps you want to restore. Then hit OK. If you have the paid version all the apps will restore without any further assistance, if you have the free version you will have to OKAY each and every single app just like you were restoring it from the market one by one. Hope this helps ya.

I tried checking guides and using search but found nothing, this may be stupid question but when trying new rom or patching newer version of rom which requires wipe all things are reset and apps are gone. So is there program to save settings and all the apps and then after wipe restore them so everything would be like before wiping?

Yes, you can make a Nandroid backup "it saves all setting apps" you installed even The alarm clock that you setted to go to school:
1- Go to CWM" Clockworkmod Recovery menu"
2- Backup and Restore
3- and u will have a bunch of choices (Backup to internal or External SDcard) (Restore from internal or external sdcard)
after you choose wait for the device to complete backup and then reboot, the next time you want everything as it was perfectly you just have to restore the Nandroid backup that you made.
Important : DONT EVER CHANGE NANDROID BACK FOLDER NAME because MD5 checksum recognize only the folder name that was created during the backup.

Should i advanced restore and restore data only, wont it restore the whole "older" rom too if you make complete restore?
Using nandroid backups to restore data after flashing is a bad way to do so, because it does exactly that - restores all the apps and settings, which essentially equals to a no-wipe. Use Titanium Backup and backup only user apps

Okay, thanks. Did not know that. So i can backup my apps with Titanium but what about all the settings? Is there method to back them up? I use Apex launcher so it does have backup but those system settings, anyway to back those up?

Titanium backup backups apps+settings, so u wont lose any progress on games, even facebook and twitter remain all the same, no need to log back in after restoring the apps. And for your launcher, im using nova launcher and in settings i can make a backup of my homescreens etc. So if i do a full wipe i restore my apps with TB and the nova launcher backup and everything is back to as it was before the wipe! I'm pretty new to this android stuff. I have rooted my phone and gotten titanium backup, but I also put CWM on it. I booted into CWM and had it backup my system. So what is the difference between titanium backup and CWM? I have heard people say that you should not back up system files with titanium, just apps and user data. Does CWM cover the system backup stuff? If titanium is able to backup user data and system files, why not just use that for everything? And how come titanium can run from the OS while CWM needs to be booted into?

So there is a fundamental difference between using CWM/TWRP to do a backup VS doing a backup from Titanium.
Doing a backup from CWM/TWRP backs up the system as a whole - think of it as a way to restore back whatever version you have - for instance I have a backup of my deoxed stock verizon image, i can boot to that anytime - i even have one with stock that I can revert to as well.
So this backup created by CWM/TWRP are an EXACT 1:1 image of what you have on your system.
Now the backup from Titanium is more for when you flash and need to put on your apps again you could use google play to restore everything OR use Titanium. Titanium is good for backing up the apps and their data - i don't use the system function.
So usage scenarios are:
1. I need to back to another image i had > use CWM/TWRP backup
2. I just flashed to a great new ROM <insert_name> and want to have the same apps i had when i had my previous rom, install titanium open it up and restore the apps you had backed up.

Cwm needs to be booted into and you use it to wipe data, cache, etc. Also make a nandroid makeup of your whole system which includes system files, apps, recovery images etc. Cwm isn't really good for restore specific apps. Its good for restoring the system as a whole. That's where titanium comes in. Can back up all apps, individual apps. Freeze and uninstall. Just a lot easier to work with

Agreed - you will want both, but really you will use Titanium on your day to day when flashing, the other is for some more safe failures - although really you will probably have few but Titanium is good for scheduled back ups etc..
Very usefull if you do nightlies as well.
OP here, thanks for the info guys. Coincidentally, after making this thread I went into Titanium to backup my user data since I hadn't done it before, and I am getting an error:
"Batch backup interrupted, insufficient free storage space"
I have 25GB on my ext card but within Titanium it shows "This folder is not writable." Something's up with the permissions. I thought I could plug the phone in via USB, then try to set the permissions on the folders. So I plug it in, but the ext card shows completely empty on the PC.
I have manually added files to the ext card through my PC in the past, so something fishy is going on. I am able to backup to the internal memory, so it looks like I need to figure out how to fix the permissions on the ext card. Within my root browser the permissions show write access for owner.
Edit: Titanium really doesn't want to save backups to the external card... But I can create them on internal memory and move them over I guess.
