Change cwm backup directory? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I know this is probably really simple, but is there a way to force backups to save to my external sd instead of internal?

Okay and how do you go about creating a new backup? just do it right over it?
because i heard that it takes up a lot ofspace
Shouldn't the real question be: why is this in the development section?...

think it creates another folder for the new backup... .What I do is, do the backup and move it to my external sdcard or copy it to dropbox or pc until need. The backup should be around 1.5GB...
nevermind..i got it
Does anyone know where the backups are saved to? I did a quick search but couldn't find it
Clockworkmod in the internal sdcard
Mine are saved in Clockworkmod folder on my external micro sd card
Moved to proper forum.
can anybody tell me how to enable sideloading so i can install CWM
i'm rooted with the OTA update

(SOLVED) Noob Clockwork Question

I would really appreciate some veteran help. With only 16gb of internal storage I noticed clockworkmod takes up over 5gb of that. I have done a couple of nandroids and recently updated to version 5. Worried if I keep installing different roms I will eventally run out of internal storage.
My question is, does clockwork usually take up that much memory and if not how do I go about cleaning it up?

Either delete the backups you don't need, or transfer them to your pc. I generally keep two backups on my devices, the stock rooted and the most recent setup. With limited storage maybe you should only keep 1

How do I delete backups. Is there an option in recovery?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk
I think so. But an easy way would be to mount to pc and do it from there. You can also rename the ones you want to keep. Just no spaces. Ex. Stock_backup_2_12
Keeps it organized that way
Going to be extremely lazy here, not at home right now. So when I connect the tab to the computer, on internal storage, there should be a folder labeled clockwork mod, just delete the backups I no longer need? Is it really as simple as that?

Just use a file explorer like astro or es and go to the clockwork folder then backup and delete the ones you don't need

Data Recovery Internal Memory

I accidentally booted into the bootloader earlier today when trying to boot into recovery. Well me trying to be fast, accidentally highlighted the Factory Reset instead of Recovery and lost everything that was stored on my internal memory. Was wondering if a program like Easeus Data Recovery would work to recover some of the things I lost.

I'm pretty sure your files are gone

Deleting files from a linux system is much different then on a windows system... Hate to say it but your files are gone
This is like the r00t user on a linux server executing:
# rm -Rf /
You might want to check out Recova by Piriform, but Linux does a wipe, not place a delete marker on the file like Windoze. It's worth a try, but don't get your hopes up.
This is why frequent nandroids and Titanium Backups that are copied to your PC and/or flash drive are extremely important.
After learning "the hard way" once, you'll never forget to backup again, I'm sure.
It happens to all of us, and it is part of the learning process.

Yeah I kinda thought I was SOL. Didn't know that TB or nandroids backed up stuff on the internal memory like pictures and videos.

You have to go in preferences in TB and set the backup location as sdcard2 and then it will be on the external sdcard. In twrp you have to select external storage and then it will save nandroids to the sdcard.

No I do have my TB and TWRP set up to save to my SD Card. What I was saying was I didn't know that you could use TB or make a nandroid to save stuff like pictures and videos that are stored on the internal memory. I thought it just made backups of installed programs, settings, ROM state....
U can back up the gallery and it's data (pictures).

how?
I'd recommend using root explorer to back up your pics from your internal mem. If you don't have the app I'd highly recommend it. You just choose the folder and create a zip of the folder and place it on your external sd and laptop/pc for safe keeping.

Is there any any any any any hope that my files are still there?
If I lose all the pictures I have then my heart might just rip in half.

"lost" my CWM backups...but not really?

I think I'm too inexperienced to be rom'ing on my everyday phone. I was running Team Objection lf5 and it was great except for google voice and MHL-out. So I decided to play with CM9. Now I cannot revert back to Objection? CWM recovery menu does not see ANYTHING on my external sd card. But when I pop the card into my laptop everything is still there, including all 3 of my CWM backup dates. What gives? I installed TWRP recovery to see if that was any different but it shows my backups as blank too. (Can TWRP even see/use CWM backup files anyways??).
So if the backups are there....how do you recommend I go about regaining access to them? Thank you in advance for saving my butt!
TWRP cannot use CWM backups and when u boot into CWM u should have an option to restore from internal memory or SD card, which is external. Try that

CWM gives me something like "directory not found" both when SD is mounted and unmounted.
Might be that CM9 is having terrible seeing the external. Put the backup on your internal.

This is true, it's only navigating the internal SD. BUT I can't mount the internal in CM9 to move the backups there. I'm stuck right?
No, flash a ROM, then move the backup on your phone, them restore the backup

Got it. I'm in CM9 right now. Got USB storage "working" in that it connects, but while copying my clockworkmod folder to the internal it will cause the phone to reboot each and every time. (4x so far). I'll keep trying but this was an absolute waste of a day.
External has been wonky on CM9, just flash another ROM, preferably tw based, so you can transfer the file, then restore your backup.

Holy crap the whole problem was incompatibility between CWM and CWMtouch versions. Never would have guessed, but then again I know so little that I thought the backups they create would be compatible. Thanks everyone for your help.
CM7 was/is great on my Incredible, but it appears I am not ready for CM9 on the Note. (With the bugs in CM9 I cannot believe people are asking for CM10 already, yikes). Then again, the is on my everyday, daily driver including work phone so I need every little thing to work right.

How to do a full backup including SD card

I have an S3 with Omega v42/4.1.2 and a 64 gb SD card which is almost full (the SD card is tricked into thinking it is the main memory so that I can install all apps to that).
I would like to upgrade to Omega v46/4.2.2 but I want to capture an 100% backup of everything just in case.
Is that possible? (when I reboot into recovery and do backup it only spits out a 2-3GB file).
Before I give suggestions, i'd like you to answer a practical question if you'll indulge me.
If you were to backup a 64 GB sdcard via recovery, where would the backup go?
Its also worth pointing out that the "swap" you're using now cannot work on 4.2 roms at all.
Best bet is to titanium backup apps and app data, nandroid backup then copy everything from your removable card to pc.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4
Good point. Just thought there is a way to dump it directly to the PC via usb.
So on 4.2 you can ONLY install apps to the phone memory and not trick it into thinking the card is the main memory?
Correct. You can use folder mount though
