Hey guys,
I have an international S2 I9100, that i updated to a march build of ICS. Overall its been a great experience, but there are several snags including a non-working lock screen, and some features missing.
My question is, can I return my phone to such a state (either by going back to GB for example) so that I can get the update via Kies? I could install the XPWLP(forgot the full name) 8 (That's the latest i think) but Id like to get it via kies so future updates are automatic.
I also havent rooted this device, since the roots I have seen are for the more recent builds of ICS.
Thanks in advance.
P.s First post, but a long time lurker
You cant return your phone to old GB version through KIES,
You have to use ODIN, to flash respective GB rom which will be upgraded to ICS latest version.
But why??? cant you directly flash latest ICS from ODIN then?
Actually what I want to do is, basically get to the official ICS update released by samsung, and let me preserve the ability to recieve updates via kies. Since i've flashed this old build using odin, the only way for me to get the latest/released ICS build is by using odin again. While that is fine, I want to be able to recieve updates via kies, so that i don't have a problem with future updates.
So i guess my question could also be understood as "Can i flash ics onto my phone using Odin, while preserving my ability to update with kies in the future"
only if your region has ICS available flashing that with odin will still work on kies. you have to wipe using code for csc to work correctly.
for later
*#1234# will show you if csc is installed, if not wipe using *2767*3855# if still doesnt work you have to flash again using odin. it happens sometime with ICS.

yes you should be able to receive updates thru KEIS, provided you have flashed an official ICS from ODIN (if Samsung rolls further out ICS updates in future , so far no) for your region.
Hi. I use Galaxy S3 smartphone, is rooted and has CWM recovery installed. But now as I attempt to update the device, It downloads the update and reboots the phone for further process. And ends up in recovery which says installation aborted. Is there anyway I can do OTA update without any errors?
I had the same and had to apply the update through kies, which worked fine.

I think I have to do it through kies too. btw that's the sad part of CWM recovery. A bug discovered.
As per ten thousand replies on this subject CWM latest version allows OTA .
No bug its user failure .

Here is a Youtube video which helped me, I followed the steps via KIES

Try downloading the latest CWM Recovery and re-rooting your phone. The latest CWM allows for OTA update. I had the same issue and that worked for me.
If you need some automation - along with 200Mb of unnecessary junk installed on your computer, then just use KIES.
Now, if you don't mind spend 3-4 minutes downloading the ROM you want (in that case you can use ANY official ROM you want), download the ROM using CheckFUS downloader and flash it using MobileODIN.
The great advantage of MobileODIN over KIES is that you don't lose root, plus you don't need a PC to flash (just to download).
I have updated my CWM to the latest version (6.0.1.0) and tried to update. "Device will be rebooted". And I got the same error "Installation aborted". Why does this enter into recovery mode while updating? :/
In that way, I may loose my data...
have already tried using the latest CWM touch recovery 6.0.1.0 and It failed. any more suggestions?

Odin, et al could also be considered junk, and it hasn't ever taken me 3 or 4 minutes to set up.
I'd like to be able to blame Samsung for my hosed update, too. There's a certain terrifying beuty in masses conforming to get support. I'm buying into this one.
Wipe phone flash stock rom via Odin or return it to a service centre .

ok ive gotten my galaxy s3 and rooted it and stuck wit the same stock rom as im not to fond of the others out yet or not stable for me, anyhow after rooting and testing out one of the roms, im on the stock rom and it gave me the op to update as the rest of you. i went and got teamwork recovery and it still gives me a hassle. you cant delete the cashe or it will delete the update, ive tried to only del dev cashe but no works. my question is.....IS THE UPDATE WORTH IT? with all the roms out and such well isnt the ota update only for some features?
I need to know where to get the new version to root gs3 I747 AT&T
Wow... you sure have dug up this thread from the deepest depths of xda lol.
You're in the wrong thread/forum mate. This is for the GT-I9300 S3 not the I747 variant.
I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution. Here is my problem. I bought a note 2 weeks ago. I updated to ICS through kies. At the very end of the update my pc had a blue screen of death and reset on me. The update seemed to take though as I was on ICS when I checked my android version. So I proceeded to install cmw and root my phone. I had been noticing some issues regarding uninstalling downloaded apps. I decided to connect to kies again and lo and behold I received a message saying that the update had not completed and I needed to do an emergency firmware recovery. Well, since my phone was rooted kies wouldnt do it. So, instead I decided to try to install official ICS (I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_I717UCLF6_HOME.tar.md5) through odin. It fails every time. It goes all the way to the end and fails on (write).
I decided to take my note back to stock GB and see if that may help. I got it back to stock using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330 and on download mode it showed custom binary: yes and current binary:custom also the flash counter read 4. I am however back to GB. I tried kies and it still says that my phone cant be upgraded through kies. This is what it says under current firmware version: PDA:LA1 / PHONE:LF6 / CFC:LF6 (ATT).
Next I tried installing cmw on the stock build and resetting the flash counter in hopes that kies would then be able to upgrade. Since doing that download mode now shows custom binary: no current binary: official samsung and no flash counter. However, I am still unable to upgrade through kies (still says my device cannot be upgraded through kies) or the flashable odin tar (I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_I717UCLF6_HOME.tar.md5) still fails at the end when it has to write.
I just want official ics on my phone. I really hope someone can help me. I am very sorry if this has been answered, I hope you can see that I have done some searching and exhausted any options that I have found. Thank you in advance.

Thx for your response. I did see that thread and gave the kies suggestion a go earlier, however kies kept crashing.
At this point i may just flash a custom rom. Any suggestions? Looking for something ics with touchwiz.
Just wanted to provide a little more info. I am at&t. Also, in the thread i refernced with the stock gb tar there is also a few other files underneath. Stock kernel only odin tars, one of which is for at&t. I did not install that. Also, cwm is still installed on the phone. Can that be whats causing kies to reject the device?
Looks like you have the GB rom and ICS radio and that's why Keis is not recognizing your rom. Flash the stock GB radio from the dev section and Keis should update. If not, you should be able to perform emergency firmware restore through Keis. There is a thread in the general section that details how to enter your serial number, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731654
This procedure should put you on the latest firmware regardless of root or what you currently have installed.
You could flash one of the debloated official ICS ROMs.
I'm not sure but I think Bigfau has the complete official posted. Flappjaxxx has a nice one also

I went with bigfau. I installed the better stock ics rom. Works like a charm. Thank you to those that replied.
I am wanting to go back to stock (no root) and would like to update to official ICS from ATT. I have successfully gone back to 2.3.4 GB but have searched and searched trying to find either the last version of GB or the latest ICS. I read that I should be able to update through Kies but it just says I am at the latest version and OTA updates will not work on the phone. Again, I am just looking for a customer odin flashable stock ICS image or at least get to a version that I can get back on the ATT updates. Thanks.
There is an option in kies to force the update by putting in your imei number or something to that affect I can't remember it was a long while ago when I tried it. Do a Google search with xda kies ICS upgrade.
I believe it is the emergency restore option in Kies and you need to put in your model (SGH-I777) and serial # from the battery compartment.

Thanks! I will give it a shot tonight when I get home.
I attempted to run the emergency firmware recovery option without success. Only option I have under tools > firmware upgrade and initialization is to go to the same version.
I just found this post, currently downloading the firmware. It is showing the ICS firmware upgrade.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727109
Worked like a charm. I was messing up by trying to choose the firmware upgrade and initialization option with the phone plugged in. You have to do it when the phone unplugged, enter your model and S/N, then plug the phone in. After the software downloads you have to remove the cable, shut off the phone and go into download mode. Then it is all waiting from there. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Awesome!
I just use ODIN on my PC and the .tar file that contains the Samsung/AT&T 4.0 when ever I want to go back.
Which will never happen but have had some minor thoughts about it..
Not a bad idea to see just how good you've got it on custom ROMs

If Im on Gingerbread, can i root it and install CMW for it, then upgrade to an ICS/JellyBean custom rom through it or must I update to official ICS rom first through odin (because of bootloader issues(?))?

Trying to flash new roms but they want you back to stock and upgraded via OTA to JB. I had backed up my phone prior to Snow JB but after restoring stock ICS, I am told that the update is unavailable. Can it tell somehow that I had flashed a custom rom and is now blocking me from updating? Looking to try all those new 4.2 and 4.1 roms and they all want you to start from a stock updated phone.

First prerequisite is you will need to re-lock the bootloader to get the OTA update.
The weirdness, however, is that at least up till now, the OTA JB update will only work from the 11c version. Apparently for the past few months the 11c update was not presented by the update servers, because most of us who got our phones recently with 10o were never offered the upgrade; then on Easter they "turned on" the 11c" updates again. But then once JB was out, it seems they only made 20j available by default, so if you had 10o (not sure if this is the one you have or not), you were stuck and unable to get 20j. Some people have been reportedly re-offered 11c but I'm not sure if this means it's being made available again on a widespread basis. Seems kind of weird that the update server can only make one version available at a time, or that they couldn't make a universal update that would work starting with either version.
To get past this, you can call up at&t (or live chat with them) and ask them to push the 11c update to your phone. Then after installing that update, it should be offered the jb update automatically shortly thereafter. Or, use lgnpst with the full stock jb image.
There seems to be some other error with phones not being registered properly in at&t's update system and they are getting an error that at&t should be able to fix.
But to confuse you even more - I believe that someone has taken the essential parts (trustzone stuff) of the stock JB rom and made a mini-image you can flash with LGNPST instead of doing the full stock jb update, so it's a lot quicker if you're not aiming for full stock JB anyway. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2229568
Once you have done either method once, you don't need to do it again.

Search on lgnpst or go to the #lg-optimus-g irc channel for a full guide.
Short version: install lgnpst on windows machine, download 11c tot, factory reset in recovery (jb and ICS aren't compatible), power off phone, enter download mode, start lgnpst on computer, select ls970.DLL and 11c.bin
I have lgnpst 1.1.3 ...it wont recognize my phone at all. I used freegee to unlock my bootloader so I'm rooted also. My HUGE problem is I can't flash any 4.2 ROMS because I'm not recognized on lgnpst and I cant finish installing the at&t update because my bootloader is unlocked...I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm stuck with the older ROMS!! =/
