Root without USB?(Android 2.2) - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so I'm in a bit of a predicament. I just bought a Vibrant off of Craigslist for my mom. It is running stock android version 2.2 and recovery version 3e.
I brought it home and realized it wasn't charging, but it recognizes the USB port every time for about 2 seconds only on a fresh boot and then stops. I have tried almost every charger I can find. It also charges when the phone is turned off but does not display a charging sign.
This makes me believe it is a software bug. Does anyone know if it is possible to put any new software on this phone? It is not yet rooted

if you can get it into download mode, you should be able to flash it to stock using aio - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509

Okay! I tried a new cord and it will charge the phone, but the device malfunctions when trying to connect to a computer and won't recognize it as a USB device. It also boots right into the system when i try to get into download mode. I'm trying drivers out at the moment buy pdanet currently isn't working.

first check your micro-usb port on the phone with a flashlight and see if you can see all your connectors. if not you might not be able to get a ADB connection to be able to use AIO. next is the alternitive if you can boot and keep it running get the pre-rooted clockworkmod updat.zip and copy it to a micro sd card [make sure it is renamed to "update.zip". then use the stock file manager to copy it from the external sd to the internal. at that point you can reboot into stock recovery and flash the update.zip. then you can flash pretty much anything you want. the only issue is that most ICS roms require a ginger bread bootloader, im not sure if there is a way to flash that with out odin. go here to get the update.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547730 scroll down to the how-to section for rooting that is the easiest non-usb method. also if your pins are toast you can pick-up an external charger and battery official samsung oem for about $30 off newegg. good luck
nevermind about the external charger. for some reason i didnt see the last post

Not actually true. It just needs to be a working micro USB cable. I use a generic micro USB cable (originally for a BlackBerry, I think) for all my flashing. Works fine.
this doesnt work guys, iv tried 3 different usb cables. nothing is happening it just wont connect. is it a way of installing a usb driver for my phone so it will reckonise my phone??

Yes i tried all that with no luck i just cant get my phone connected to my laptoo if i could I
could unbrick
Check for Windoze updates if you're unable to get your PC & phone to recognise each other after trying the obvious (different USB ports, different cables, different versions of Odin, making sure Kies/its processes aren't running in Task Manager on PC. Try *all* of these).
This has solved the issue for a few people over the last week or so. Failing that, uninstall Kies from your PC, reboot, redownload it, reinstall it, reboot & try again.
If that doesn't work, try a different PC.

This method not required to connect your mobile to PC.
Just need external sdcard and ics based recovery
If you are ics recovery version , we can come from this issue.
1, download any ics ROM ( stock based ) and copy to your external sdcard.
2, root the mobile using this way
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
[GUIDE] ROOT/UNROOT Stock ICS Firmware without flashing unsecure kernel
3, as per the above guide once you flashed cwm.zip , you will get cwm based recovery screen.
4, wipe system and cache
5, install the custom ROM from external sdcard
I believe this method will work for you.
All the best

I believe it won't since he bricked his device and can't even start the phone.
Do what MistahBungle said + make sure that you install Kies first so that you have the proper drivers for Odin.
i have tried this methed. copied all the files on to the sd card, inserted back into the phone put into recovery but would not read external sd card only internal comes up????
That's nice.
Now have you tried the other suggestions that have been made ? If your phone & PC can't/won't recognise each other, you need to fix that first. Forget about CW not working. It's not relevant. You're not going to fix this without an Odin flash and making that happen should be your focus/priority.

I'm having the same issue today, i flashed the siyah kernel beta and now recovery doesn't work and phone stays on Samsung logo.
I can get into download mode but pc says unrecognised device . It was working fine a few days earlier.
Unfortunately my Samsung USB cable appears to have vanished too but I don't see why my other cable shouldn't work as long as it supports data? Maybe the cable is the issue though??
Might be. Try the (many) suggestions on the first page. Any one of those could be/resolve the problem. In addition to those suggestions, you can also try uninstalling Kies on your PC, rebooting, re-downloading it, reinstalling it, rebooting & then seeing if your PC & phone recognise each other.
But definitely try those other suggestions first.

This is definitely NOT a cable issue. I have the same problem, and i too was using Siyah. It's something with the kernel.

See this thread

You will need all the files, make sure Keis is not messing with Odin so check to make sure it's not running on the PC.
Have had this happen to me - keep the files safe and you will fix pretty much any brick u manage to do. Mine was in CM9 - dropped and battery fell out had to do the full repair job to fix.

[Q] SGS3 Wont connect to pc

Ok ,so heres my problem:
My S3 (i9300) wont connect to my computer which is running windows 7. I plug it in, and there is no sound for a device connected, no confirmation, and all the gs3 does is charge. it doesnt even show the little usb symbol at the top on the status bar. i've also tried two different cables, two computers, and ive cleaned the usb port on the phone.
This is all pretty recent as well. it used to connect fine on stock and the same on cm9, but one day when i plugged it in, it said unrecognized device, and from then on, the computer doesnt even know its connected anymore. i restored back to my original stock backup that had worked fine before, but still no progress. Kies has been uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and so have the drivers for samsung phones..
Download, extract and install, then try again

going to be a driver issue if it charges, install KIES first as that provides the necessary samsung drivers too. If this doesnt work then uninstall the USB controller you phone is connected to, unplug the phone and reboot. Leave the phone out and install KIES again. The try again.
Could be your cable too though, have you swap tested anything yet, does a different cable work or does the cable work ok in another PC?

I'm reinstalling KIES right now and ill try it with two different usb cables. If neither work, then ill try uninstalling the usb controller as you said and then go through the process once more. ill get back to you on it all when I'm done.
I have a few no-brand, cheap microUSB cables that allow only for charging the phones: they don't let me get a data connection between the phone (or whatever) and the PC.
Other USB cables work ok, so I know the problem is not with the phone.
You don't need (and shouldn't) install KIES only because of the drivers.
The only drivers you should install from the only trusted source are these:
http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows
I had the same problem.
I tried EVERYTHING. I did tons of research and tried them all, nothing worked.
I fixed my problem by sending my phone in and getting it fixed. I think they replaced the hardware.
Your phone is likely having a hardware issue, get it sent in, this is the only way.

The only problems with that are: 1) My phone is rooted and 2) That might take a while... what im bascially trying to do now is get it to work with my pc so that i have the possibility of unrooting and putting my music on it directly through the cable, rather than removing my microsd and having to put that into an sd adapter.
I'm having the same issue with my AT&T version. I have CM10 installed. I flash back to stock via Odin and I can get it to work, but as soon as I flash back to CM10 after rooting it won't connect.

No I am flashing to a stock rooted touchwiz and I can connect to my phone when its done. When it reboots it goes into a loop so I have to reboot it and wipe data/factory reset, then reboot. When it comes back on it still won't connect, so then I reflash stock root again using Odin and it comes back with USB connection working. I think some files are getting corrupt on the phone when flashing to CM10.
I had the same problem before, I used a different charger and it worked.. idk what it was
Well right now I am on Stock TW that is rooted and I can get into my phone via Windows Explorer. But if I was to put Clock work Mod back on it seems to not want to connect anymore. So it seems CWM is doing something weird.
I'm gonna install TWRP instead of CWM and see if that makes a difference.

Look for the rooted image for your phone for stock. Put your phone in download mode and use Odin to reflash it back to stock not a restore. Use this site for help: http://galaxys3root.com/category/galaxy-s3-unroot/
Its worked for me every time. You may have to flash it twice with Odin to get it to work, that's what I usually have to do.

My issue ended up being an app I had installed, Triangle Away. I uninstalled and rebooted and had my USB connection back.
Well, so far, all I've gotten it a "usb cable connected" notification when trying yet another cable. Although i got this notfication, i still couldnt see any of the files on it from my pc, so it basically wasn't really connected. Im not sure what to do from here.
My ultimate goal would be to be able to unroot it so that if i needed to send it in or whatever, then i could without worry. As a side question, is there anyway to unroot it without a pc?

Upgrade i717 from ICS without USB???

I am running the official release ICS from AT&T. The phone is rooted and carrier unlocked.
I cannot get my or any other computer I have tried to recognize the phone via USB connection.
ICS is running incredibly slow and getting increasingly unstable. I would like to upgrade to a stable release of Jelly Bean but have not found a way to do so since I cannot get the device recognized on the PC.
Note: My USB port failed a while back and I had to replace it with a new one I purchased on eBay. It is possible that the new port is not working for data though it is working for charging. The computer always comes up with an error saying the device malfunctioned though it does recognize something was plugged into the USB.
Is there a way to upgrade the OS to JB by downloading and installing directly on the phone rather than via USB?
I can get to the CWM Recovery v5.5.0.4 screen, is there an update I can apply from there or phone application based?
I will eventually try replacing the USB port again seeing as my computer sees other Samsung devices properly and I know the drivers are installed correctly but for now I need to get this phone a bit more stable.
Thanks.
I would update your recovery from cwm to twrp. You can find twrp recovery in the original android section. Then download one of the many JB roms available and use twrp to flash it!
Then get your usb port replaced.
You can try downloading the rom from your phones browser. It might take a while. Also update your recovery to twrp.

You can always download the ROMs with your computer and then transfer them to your microSD card with an adapter. You could also bluetooth them to your phone.

Please help! Sudden brick :(

I have a note 2 rooted and on jellybean rom. I never took any update. My phone won't boot up or get into recovery. I can get into download mode but I can't get Odin to work. I've tried different USB ports and cables (have not tried different computers yet). When I plug in cable and phone to pc or outlet it gets stuck on the battery logo and circle. When I try to get into recovery it displays Samsung name off and on. I'm trying Odin back to stock but like I said it won't see my phone when connected. I will get a new cable ASAP to see if that makes a difference. I have pulled battery sim and sd several times to no avail. I will leave them out for the night and try again tomorrow. Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks ! I really appreciate it !

Thanks for your suggestion! I have reinstalled the drivers and restarted PC already. Last night I left battery sim and sd card out but today I will leave it charged for a few hours to see if it changes. I have also ordered an new OEM charger and battery to see if that helps. If you phone will not connect with your computer in download mode as well as recovery mode. I do not think there is much you can do other then see if you can get it replaced. I had have run into an issue like this before. Once I was able to get into download mode and push out the stock recovery onto the phone. But if it will not go into download mode as well there is not much I think you can do.
It will go into download mode. When connected to the pc Odin won't see it. Do you think using adb would be pointless at this point? I have not used a new USB cable so I wanted to wait at least for that to arrive along with an OEM battery I ordered to see if that helps any or is that pointless as well? Also does it matter where you store Odin on your pc ? (Internal vs on a sd card? Thanks for your help ! I may just need to send it in but wanted to try everything I could come up with.

I would try to follow the un-root section I know there is a lot of issue with the note 2 and updates or unrooting where it will not find the recovery because when you use Cause it moves the location of it. This might help. good luck.

Sounds, Like a bad EMMC, If Your Phone doesn't get in to recovery and if it wont get recognized by Odin. Try updating the drivers, than Try Flashing back to the First firmware that came with the note II which is 4.1.1 So Try it, If it doesn't work like that, than it's indeed a bad EMMC on the board. Good luck my Friend!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm already on 4.1.1. I've never updated my note 2. I have updated drivers (although I can't find it in device manager but I've indeed downloaded it via my pc not via phone/ cable) I'm hoping its not a had EMMC because I don't know what that is but it sounds like that would make it a hardware issue correct? I'm hoping its just bad cables (I have old cables) and a bad battery (I still have the original battery on moderate to heavy usage) but recently became second device when I got note 3 (just in time lol)
Edit: is it still necessary to flash 4.1.1 if I'm already on it ? Thanks again!

Phone not detected by windows 7 help!

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum. I've got a Samsung i777 on android 2.3.6 kernel 2.6.35.7 build number gingerbread.uckk6
I've recently bought this phone off ebay
My phone does not get detected by windows 7 or Macbook. I've tried changing the USB flex cable with I9100 v2.3 but still no luck.
When I connect USB port it beeps and shows mtp-initialization/mtp-connected on the phone but it is not shown on windows. It says USB cannot recognise the device. I've got a s3 and ideos x3 both of them are detected.
I've installed kies 3 on my laptop.
I had to swtich off the wifi on the phone because it consumes a lot of battery, I think it is because of the android version I'm using!
I want to root the phone and unlock it!!
Any help is appreciated!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
I'm guessing the problem is the Samsung drivers you have installed for the s3. Try uninstalling those and installing the correct drivers for s2.

Thank you guys for all your help really appreciate it!
I have tried all the steps mentioned above tried to uninstall all the previous drivers I had and installed the new driver as mentioned in the above link but no luck
I tried it on a friends computer with a different cable still it shows the USB device is not recognised!!

Did you install another ROM? It might help to Wipe system, Data, ETC! it appears to be a software problem. Or at least my guess is the ROM your using.
The Galaxy phones all use the same USB drivers whether it's an S2, S3, S4, etc., so if the installed drivers were working for your S3, it's unlikely to be a driver issue.
Can you boot it into download mode? If you happen to have a USB jig, that's the easiest. Otherwise, power off the phone, unplug the USB cable, hold Vol +/Vol-, then plug in the USB cable. It should go into ODIN download mode. See if Windows detects the phone that way. If so, it very well could be something weird with the OS installed (although it appears to be stock).
If you can get into download mode, you can flash a stock kernel to make sure you are starting fresh. A good file repository is found here. I recommend the stock UCKH7 image I777_UCKH7_OCD_No_BL.7z (you'll also get root).
And yes, the UCKK6 release had a serious bug related to the wifi that could drain your battery. Best to go with UCKH7.
You could also download an app that allows you to enter download mode.

I was able to boot to download mode by holding the vol +/- key and then plugging in the USB cable but there is no movement from the computer it doesn't make a sound nor does it detect. I tried restarting the phone then I get a notification on windows that USB device not recognised!
Yes I guess this rom is useless, if the wifi is switched on then battery would not even last 6 hrs!

Are you saying to get a balloon notification in the tray that says the USB device is not recognized? A possible reason for that is a faulty USB cable or USB port (funny enough, I actually got that message last night when I was playing around with my Captivate, and switching USB ports made it work). I know you said you've tried other computers an another USB cable, but that's about my only idea. Maybe there's some debris inside the connector that's messing up the connection.
When you say you changed the "USB flex cable", are you talking about the internal connector and board inside the phone? If so, perhaps the I777 connector board is actually a little different than the I9100 board and causing a compatibility issue.
The bug in UCKK6 related to wifi didn't affect everybody, but it definitely affected a lot of people (based upon reports here).

If you have an SD card, you can download another ROM on that SD card from your computer and then you can install custom recovery (CWM) and then install the ROM from SD card.

First ill run you through the problem I had. Just for reference did you use Mr. Cooks script before flashing Cyanogenmod 11? One of his scripts for cleaning before flashing, actually deletes a certain file, not to keen on which one. What it results in though is not being able to flash OF ROMS and some certain custom ROMS! So id recommend alliance's ROM! As for the "Getting the ROM on your device, you could put the ROM on your SD though recovery "Mount and storage/Mount mass storage/" or just use a micro sd card adapter and move it on there that way.
Thanks for your reply. Would you mind sending me the link on how to do that step by step as mentioned I'm new to Samsung phones and also this forum.
Your help is appreciated

What state is your phone currently in? Is it still not detected by the computer? You are still on 2.3.6, correct?
If it's still not being detected by your computer, I'm not sure if you can flash anything needed using the stock recovery. I know that when I flashed stock JB, I was able to boot into stock recovery and directly apply the standard CWM update file here. It will give boot into a temporary CWM that should allow you to flash other ZIP files (like a ROM), although I had trouble doing that (so I ended up flashing the AJK_v4.9_NoSwap.zip kernel using the MobileOdin android app, which gave a permanent CWM recovery).
I'm not sure if this same process works with the 2.3.6 recovery. However, in order to get the stock recovery to see the internal SD card, I had to run adb shell commands to mount the partition (meaning I had to have a working connection from the computer).
Solved!!!
HI Guys,
