Having a problem- can't seem to root
Hey guys- I have a question/problem.
I updated via Kies as well. I didn't like the stock ROM, so I wanted to go back to "The Unofficial" that I was using before. However I can't find the right thread to get mine rooted for some reason. Can somebody point me to the right one please? I'm still fairly new at this and trying to get the hang of it.
Thanks!

I tried to the Odin root method after upgrading to the official ICS. It wouldn't boot. It got stuck at SAMSUNG logo.

No.
Once you have CWM you can flash any Rom...You would only need root of you wanted to run that firmware....rooting with cwm before you flash a Rom is an exercise in futility...the Rom itself will be rooted one flashed.

That's because you just flashed a gingerbread kernel on an ics Rom.
The gingerbread root .tar is for gingerbread only...
Solved! Thank you,

ok guys lastnight i tried the latest firmware on samfirmware.com for our ace. it is
GT-S5830
S5830XWKTE
2.3.6
2012 March
S5830EPLKP3
(e-plus)
i tried to root it with cf-root. b3 b4, and the fix. no go.
and when i flash cwm5 it will only last for one boot cycle.?
WTF is goin on with this rom? just wont allow root access. i have tried a few version now of root and cwm. and having no luck.
i wanted to try this rom as it is lighter that latest russian version. and it locks on to wifi pretty instantly.
anyone tried and succeded?
P.s im not new to flashing ether, tried flashing cf-root with all version of cwm recovery, no go
Operator specific firmwares usually have locked bootloaders. I am not really sure but I think they have locked the bootloader.

you should know that samsung never ever ever ever lock bootloaders on devices.. its other OEMs SE,MOto,HTC who play dirty games. otherwise you would had a thread sticky here saying "unlock/relock bootloaders SGA"

One time I had the same problem and I just had to flash old stock recovery before flashing the root-zip.
To get the old recovery you just have to flash the file from here via clockworkmod.
After this rooting should work. I prefere rooting the phone by flashing the upd_1.zip from here.
Good day, XDA. I'd like to ask help with regards to rooting my Xperia S. I have recently bought this and it got shipped with ICS 4.0.4 and build number 6.1.A.0.45 and I updated its build number to 6.1.A.2.45. I have also unlocked its bootloader successfully. Now I'm having problems on how to root this. I've read certain posts regarding ICS rooting and they all state that it has to have 6.1.A.0.45 build number. But I don't know how to rollback to the previous build number. What should I do?? Please help..

Just flash Advanced stock kernel v14 by arakmar via fastboot.
What will it let me achieve then, bro?
BTW, thanks for the reply.

I am in the exact situtation as you. I too bought my Xperia S last week and have updated to the latest firmware. As this is my first Android phone, I have no clue how to move forward.
I would be glad if you post your findings. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. but the link you gave is for GB and I am on ICS already. (I know, there is a way to flash to GB but... ) I will better wait for a perfect way for rooting a device with ICS on locked BL installed.
BTW, here
Also, you can never brick your device on LOCKED bootloaders so don't worry
DId he mean unlocked bootloader?

Yea, i too hope someday someone will develop a way to root so that you don't have to go back to GB !!
Only for unlocked bootloader... here is a step by step I put together using the information gathered from various threads here in XDA.. I have used this very same method for my phone, so it is definitely working.. if you run into any problem like not being able to get into the Fastboot mode, or I missed some file, let me know..

Thanks for this bro! I'll try this out later when I get home. Will my data be lost?
So essentially you are just replacing a stock kernel by a rooted kernel. What if I want to go back to the unrooted kernel?

Hey guys I just upgraded from gingerbread to official german 4.12 jellybean
I9100XWLSD_I9100XXLS8_I9100DBTLS7_HOME.tar.md5
via odin.
The installation went fine but now the phone got sim locked and it asks for a network code. I saw a couple of Galaxy S sim unlock apps on the playstore but none of them work (except for the one which has the [root] prefix in it which I haven't tried since the phone isn't rooted). So I was wondering how can I unlock it? Thx in advance guys

afaik you need root to unlock it.
It's rooting time.
Ok but what method should I use? There seem to be so many around I'm getting kinda confused. As far as I can tell the custom kernel method seems to be the easiest way to get it right? And how do I know which kernel should I use?

If you don't root it, you won't unlock it and well, he's not gonna be able to use it as a phone.
Flash a custom kernel or flash cwm + su + busybox

if it is 4.3 ota casual won't work. 4.3 doesn't have a way currently to unlock the bootloader unless something changed in this past week.

Hi Everyone,
Didn't see anyone post the stock firmware ODIN files for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Alpha SM-G850A. I want to get it before I try to root my phone.
Or how can I extract it's stock ROM? After that and test, I'll upload it post a link to all.
Thanks.
