Re-Root for 1.4.3 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hello,
I have searched all over these threads (only reading title threads, I honestly don't have enough time to go through 7+ pages worth of threads)
So I wanted to start to this thread because I wanted to know if there's anyone who has successfully re-rooted their Nook Tablet after unintentionally installing 1.4.3 (thanks, B&N..not)
When I rooted my NT that had 1.4.2, I could've sworn I blocked OTA - unfortunately, last week it proved that I apparently didn't or I just did something wrong. Now I have 1.4.3 and lost function of the Google App Store, etc.
I read somewhere in these threads and through Google searches that some people were successful at re-rooting WITHOUT restoring their NT and losing all data. - This is what I would like to do, simply re-root while keeping my apps, settings, etc; and go about my day. Also, I'd like to completely block OTA updates correctly this time.
Can someone PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE kindly post detailed instructions on how to do this?
All of us who are still trying to figure out how to do this would greatly and sincerely appreciate it.
Thank you ever so!

I used this method after I was upgraded to 1.4.3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583, and it worked great!
The basic steps are:
Build a bootable SD card that loads up CWM
Use CWM to install a .zip that puts Google Apps and Root into your /system partition
It's really that easy. See the post I mentioned for details and download links.
The 'Gapps_and_root.zip' mentioned there really just installs the Google framework and root, and nothing else. It leaves all your existing apps and settings alone.
The only thing missing from that method is Calendar Sync. If that is important to you, I can provide tips to how I got that going, too.
Blocking OTA though, I haven't done yet and probably won't. I need to stay on top of the SW updates in case something there is important to the magazines my wife likes to read! As long as I can keep re-rooting as the updates roll out, I don't mind.

In just rebooted my tablet after doing 1.4.3 and found the root v4.7 SD Card did a splendid job. I always clear my data, but I don't see why you'd have to.
I even found that I could just install a replacement keyboard off the Play Store without further modification other than just selecting it. Quite refreshing.
Can't seem to get rid of the stupid Quick Launch Bar without screwing up chunks of text after replacing SystemUI.apk but, I can live with that.

Thank you both for your replies! I'm going to attempt re-rooting my NT tonight... hopefully, it will all work out.
UPDATE: it worked! I'm rooted now... i just have one question, do you any of you guys have the stock B&N and found a successful way to add other android apps to the front? - sorry if that doesn't make sense, I do hope you get what I'm talking about.
I had App Manager, but it seems like it's completely unusable now :/
Thanks!

Yeah the developer says that B&N changed the API and he is working to fix it. Until then, don't think so.

I was also sad about App Manager. I hope the dev can figure out the new B&N changes. It was so convenient!
Until then my new solution is to use HomeCatcher.
I set up HomeCatcher to run Go Launcher EX, so two clicks of the 'n' button and I'm there where all my apps are.
I then used AnyCut (and regular app shortcuts) to put links to the B&N Home (it's the app called "home"), as well as the Library and the Shop in the Go Launcher drawer. Easy one-click to all the stock B&N things; that way so my wife can still read her magazines.

I do the same thing with ADW Launcher EX. I actually really dislike the stock home screen and launcher and prefer to remove the quick launch bar entirely.

If this really is a "Nook Color" as your title implies, I think you're in the wrong forum - This is for the Nook Tablet which is a different beast altogether. Nook Color forums are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=860
If this is a Nook Tablet, you may want to start a new thread explaining what exactly you did before anyone can help you figure out what to do next.

After updating an app, the notification bar shows "ongoing 100% complete" but won't stop blinking at bottom left corner of screen. I noticed if I use Home Manager and kill the BN home it will then disappear. Any ideas ?? Thanks

would this method still work for the NT with version 1.4.3 which has not been previously rooted? thanks!

Same thing is going on with me after rooting 1.4.3. I usually just restart the nook after downloading updates now, but this is a pain. Any quicker/easier solutions would be appreciated.

OTA Block?
Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted on this thread ... Anyway, all is still going well with the rooted 1.4.3 Tablet I have... My only concern now is making sure that OTA is blocked - I have that option in my Hidden NT Settings but I have no way of knowing if it is in fact actually blocked... can anyone tell me what this option does? If it even works at all, and if there's any way to check if OTA is in fact blocked?
Here are two pictures
1. You can see the option
2. What happens when I click on it

Okay, as far as I know, the app named DeviceManager.apk does the job of updating. I have just freezed it with Titanium. It can also be uninstalled. My device hasn't been updated yet (I keep my wifi on 24x7).
Alright rjmohit, I'll look into it. Thanks!
Currently i am still on 1.4.0, if i farked up my NT and need to do the 8x interrupt powerup to get system restore, will any steps (i.e. allow wifi to be turned on to complete the initial registration process) update the NT to 1.4.1 before I get a chance to use Indirect's original zergrush method to root it again?
Thanks.
It shouldnt

Well, yeah! That exactly is the one!
For those of you who are unhappy with the 'unavailable' software number, you can head on to the nook color forums to deactivate OTA updates w/o disabling DeviceManager!
But as far as I know, this is the safest method, as the other methods mentioned there dont seem foolproof with the NT.
Has anyone tried to see if this method loses ability to put have off Barnes and Noble store. I dont books or apps available for purchase anymore.

Yes, by freezing devicemanager, you no longer have access to "shop" and if you try and shop online instead, the book, etc. will not sync to your library. So if you actually like using this as an E-reader the way it is designed (rather than using kindle app instead), then hope the FOTAkill.apk does the trick.
Sooooo where can i get fotakill.apk?
I rooted mine earlier with gapps but do not have it.
Fyi, i used the method mentioned on the nook color forum; sqlite to edit fota value from "auto" to "manual" in database and my B&N Store seems to be working fine. Device info still shows version 1.40 also.

You can find it in the first post of the rooting thread, under "Download Link for rooting script:" Inside the Nook&Zergy.zip file under system/app
Mod: If I posted in the wrong place, please let me know. I am new to all of this.
On my rooted NT/not de-bloated, I just received the OTA at ~7:45pm PST, it took ~3 mins to download then installed successfully. I had confirmed that FOTAkill.apk was in system/app yesterday so this did not block it.
Note: I have been using my NT with WIFI ON waiting for the OTA to hit hoping to confirm(not discount) Indirect's theory related to FOTAkill.apk.
Here is a review of my initial NT rooting success, the OTA update and current outcome of no root/no functioning gapps:
12/15:
1. Rooted using Indirect steps.
2. Installed Gapps (of course)
3. Did not de-bloat
4. Confirmed NT root access and installed terminal emulator, File Mgr, Root Explorer
After rooting: (all good)
Button Savior works
Android Market works
Amazon Apps Store works
B&N Apps works
Several launchers work. (Go, ADW, LauncherPro, VTL Launcher)
Use ADW Launcher EX regularly
Some issues with widgets not starting.
Google Services Framework error re-curring inconsistently but not detrimental to functioning.
12/21: Saw XDA post of OTA 1.4.1 warning:
Kept reading XDA forums to assess impact and wait for ideas on solutions
Saw Indirect post that FOTAkill.apk was installed in his rooting process.
Confirmed FOTAkill.apk was present in /system/app on my NT
Installed OTA Rootkeeper
Decided to wait for OTA update to see what happens
What I did not do:
No devicemanager.db edits as suggested by yaggermr post
No Titanium Backup freezing of .apks
No de-bloating (Unsure if proven that this would prevent but assume it does)
I did not confirm FOTAkill.apk permissions but had not changed them. (They should have been whatever they were when this file was delivered in root/gapps process.)
12/22: OTA update received
What was in place that I hoped would work:
FOTAkill.apk
OTA Rootkeeper(don't really know how to use this but think I did the protect and back up.)
Outcome:
Button Savior works
Launcher selection works as does the Launchers
Android Market does not open and the icon weirdly small on dock
Gmail not working
Amazon Apps Store opens and downloads but app install is blocked as non-B&N content.
All other previously loaded apps work. (that do not require root access)
Lost root access.
Next steps:
Full factory reset or sdcard approach seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20502705&postcount=1
Then:
Edit devicemanager.db approach seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20499801&postcount=2
Or
Freeze devicemanager.apk seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20513770&postcount=6
FOTA kill didnt work, time for plan B. Most OTA's check the build.prop through recovery which means I'm modifying the build.prop to change to a nook color and see what happens. It should in theory work.

Then I can verify that blocking appears work. I'm in the same area and didn't receive an update.
I had frozen "DeviceManagerService 2.3.4" with Titanium pro. I also previously freeze "cloudservice 1.0" and com.bn.cloud.svc 2.3.4", and have not defrost them.

Newbie questions

I have a nook tablet and looking into rooting. Had an iPhone jailbroken from day 1 so very interested in this process for the nook. Apparently its best to down grade to 1.4 first since my nook updated. My daughter received new nook today but she is not giving it up and already has 1.4. I keep asking to trade but not having anything to do with it. Once I move down to 1.4 I can root and block updates it appears. However I do have a question on side loading. I have seen this term used a lot but unsure of its meaning. If I am rooted do I not just use the market to download apps to the nook once rooted?? Do you have to constantly sideload apps even after rooting?? thanks for any help
Sideloading - installing applications/games directly via apk (android package) you have on your home computer or on the SD card of the NT.
A rooted device allows you to download and install apps/games from Google Market as well as Amazon Appstore.
it is driving me crazy looking how to install the apk's from the sd card or computer. running 1.40 I have unknown sources loaded. but i can only sideload the apps if I download them from the nook browser.
how the hell do i load them from the sd card.
btw I am not rooted yet....computer keeps installing it as a storage device and that wont work for the life of me

Have you tried turning on (both) usb debugging settings and automount off? You usually have to redo those settings after a nook reboot.
i have a nook tablet and when i did the whole rooting thing i didnt put a launcher on it by accident. now i cant get to the apps unless i do a search for them. is there a way to fix this?

Help with keeping NT at 1.4.0
Purchased a nook tablet for my mom for christmas but she wants apps not available on nook appstore so I got amazon appstore downloaded and apps added and then got the 1.4.1 update. I got it reset to 1.4.0 and set back up. I don't want to root because I am worried mom will have problems. (she is 73 years young) Happy with it the way it is with nook stuff working and having ability to get other apps from amazon. I keep turning off wireless to keep it status quo. All of the options to block ota seem to need the nt to be rooted. Is there a way to keep at 1.4.0, not root the nt, and be able to keep wireless on??
my undrstanding is root is required and i bet your grandmother would love android market

It seems like she's coming to you for problems, which means she shouldn't have to worry about rooting, and going into the store for help. She probably won't notice anything with missing out on the 1.4.1 update, as it seems like the only thing that was changed was breaking roots and sideloading. If it actually introduced new functionality, I would be amazed. And she probably won't do something that would break her tablet after you root it... it's not like rooted makes killing your system trivial. It is "easy", but you still have to activate root mode, mount /system rw, and then and THEN, you have to do something stupid.
So, I would stop stressing about rooting her device, but then again, if the next update actually forces something that will break the B&N apps (like change the server interface, or something, and reject anyone with an earlier version) then she would either have to live without them, or reset the nook and lose everything (hopefully, you would back it all up, though, right?)
Of course will back up but I was afraid it would make it too complicated but I guess I am going to root and see if she likes it. We can always reset the whole thing back to the beginning. Thanks for the confirmation that I need to root to block ota.
Thanks for the help!!!

CASE#1: i like and use B&N apps i was to stick with stock but i wan't be able to use the most features as possible and not figure it out and troubleshoot so many things in the way then for those people i recommend stock 1.4.0 simple than that.
Albert and I have posted modified, rooted stock 1.4.0 ROM's so you simply get into CWM and flash them, period.
But If you are the kind of person and also want to learn how to do it from scratch and modify to your taste then use one of the so many methods posted in development section to root: there are 2 options root by using adb and root by using a bootable sdcard - PLEASE check post#2 for video-tutorials.
Brief history of the creation of the sdcard method: many users were having issues setting up adb and making drivers for nook tablet get recognized by windows so they were not able to root so it is why sdcard method was released. and as users were having issues setting up sdcard aswell was created the "burn this image to your sdcard with win32diskimager, method which still some users have issues and i remember have read of one user that after user that bricked his device using the last method mentioned... Oh well there is always risk!!!
ONCE ROOTED YOU CAN USE recovery flasher app TO INSTALL ClockWorkMod (CWM)
PROs OF SDcard METHOD: no use of PC
CONs OF SDcard METHOD: you still have to setup your sdcard, format it with fat32 file system and set first partition to Active or LBA: boot (linux) and if that does work then burn the root image to your sdcard using win32diskimager.
CASE#2: By the other hand if you are the kind of user that don't use (maybe hate) B&N service/apps then good news you have 3 options to pick from: CM7, CM9 and MIUI.
Now if you want to go straight to one of the ROM's mentioned (CM7, CM9 or MIUI) then you simply can prepare a sdcard to boot ClockworkMod (CWM) from it . For that please check here -METHOD #1 and here to know how to set it up!.
Once you re able to boot into CWM from sdcard you can now go ahead and download the ROM of your preference, copy it to your internal sdcard (MyNOOK) and flash it in CWM >> Install .zip from sdcard >> choose .zip from internal sdcard >> pick the copied .zip package and flash it, reboot device and VOILA!

QUICK TIPS & TRICKS
How to boot into CWM: hold pwr + N and wait for the N dark screen comes up then let go of the power button while still holding the N button
How to take screenshots on Nook Tablet: N + Volume Down
How to erase/deregister (Wipe Data): Go to Settings> Device Info> Erase and Deregister Device - This will clean your data (All your sideloaded apps and settings will be gone)
How to make a hard reset (factory system reset) - This reset will de-registers your device as well as erases all local content such as contacts, sideloaded documents, personal information, 4 digit passcodes, etc. and re-install necessary software.
-----------------------
Rebooting your tablet results in usbdebugg deactivation, EVEN IF IT SHOWS TO BE CHECKED. Every time you reboot you must uncheck and recheck usb debugging and uncheck automount.
Working must have apps for sideload: Facebook, Gmail, Youtube, Amazon AppStore, etc.
Use Sideload Wonder Machine to Sideload Android Apps all you want. You need to have USB debugging enabled.
it is better to install a launcher since the stock one doesn’t display apps that are not purchased via B&N Market by default.
Once you install a launcher, you can access it via Home->Search. Type the launcher name in there.
When the Back button isn't there, a swipe from right to left on the status does the job (this will work if you keep the stock Status Bar)
Use Anycut and/or Hidden Settings app to create shortcuts and have access to "hidden settings"
Use Nook Color Apps Manager to add other sideloaded apps to the Nook home screen.

ADB error: device offline?
One of the nastiest problem you can face is when some other (wrong) drivers are already installed on your PC, especially if you have Android SDK installed, rooted a different Android device before, etc. In this case you’ll have to completely remove them from your PC or use a different computer. An ideal tool for this is Nirsoft’s USB Device View (download here, it is free), Unzip it somewhere in a folder and launch USBDeview.exe. Look under the description tab and remove every driver containing ADB letters and restart your PC. Try to install the downloaded USB Drivers again. In my case this procedure removed some previous ADB drivers used to root my Kindle Fire and my Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

SideLoad Wonder Machine
Does the Sideload Wonder Machine allow you to sideload apps on NT 1.4.1?
Last night I rooted my wifes NT followed everything step by step indirects thread pulled up and the videos from youtube.
Everything worked perfectly and I installed the Honeycomb Launcher.
Next went into setting up TB to prevent the OTA's...still working fine
Started putting all my wife's books and everything else of hers on there and then I get a Honeycomb Launcher (mobi.SyndicationApps) is not working. Force Close...Force Close it...the launcher loads back up...same error message...hit force close...loads back up...same error message.
It would not let me do anything else except hit force close.
So I did the reset with the power button and the volume buttons 8 times.
Gonna try to root it again when I get off of work so my question is did I do something wrong in the root process/preventing the OTAs, or is this just a bug with Honeycomb and I should try a different launcher, or was it just some freak thing that has never happened to anyone else before? (I searched the forum all day looking for an answer but did not turn up anything useful)
Honycomb is working here. Rooted via Indirect's script. Seems very solid.

Here is a quick tip, on Indirect's newest version of his rooting script, it gives you the option to install which launcher you want right in the script (great idea btw) however when you select GO launcher it will take away the status bar on GO launcher home screen and disable (or maybe make it act as home button on single press) the n button. This is a issue as you can't go to the shop or library without going into another app first. The workaround i found for this was as such:
While rooting, choose Honeycomb launcher as your default launcher instead of GO launcher (if that is the one you so desire). Once you finish the root, go to the market place, download GO launceher EX and then simply uninstall Honeycomb Launcher.
I figured this tip will help a few people out.
Also not that i can vouch for it as i haven't done it myself, i would imagine instead of having to unroot and reroot to fix the issue, if you installed a different launcher (such as ADW launcher) then uninstalled GO launcher, then re installed it, then uninstall the other launcher, it would fix the issue. But that is simple guessing, so take it how you will.

Blocking the updater
I got a NT for Christmas and found this site to help me sideload apps. I followed the video contained in this thread: Stock Firmware]Restore Barnes & Nobel Nook 1.4.0 from SDCard....worked perfectly! However, I do not want to root my NT just want to sideload apps so I didn't follow the instructions for rooting the NT. My problem now is how do I block the updater on my NT to keep it from going back to the 1.4.1 system?? Thank you so much for your help!!
ADB error: device offline
After installing drivers, if you get this message, you are in a USB 3.0 port. Switch to USB 2.0 (for ZT Systems Windows 7 machine this is the front ports).

I was hoping you wouldn't say that! I'm pretty good with a computer but this is my first "messing around" with an NT. Does rooting ruin the NT, as in can it be changed back? If people are having problems with drivers and such when the NT is rooted, is it worth rooting it? All I really want to do is use 3rd party apps like those from Amazon. Thank you for your help!

You can always go back to a stock out-of-the-box NT with the acclaim_update.zip "magic sdcard" method by AdamOutler if you mess things up or if you just don't want all the goodies anymore.
Now you have an advantage here you haven't got the update so you more than good to go. I recommend you to root with indirects method asap (as soon as possible) before you get the update then make sure you block ota immediately though I would even go and freeze the devicemanager.apk with titanium backup to feel myself safer. You could try it, if you have issues with B&N apps after freeze then just simple unfreeze, so far everything can be undone just follow step by step the instructions plus the video tutorials and this thread with tips you be more than good. However if you have any doubt, issue we will be gladly to help.

This site rocks! I actually had already updated my nook tablet not knowing (duh) and had to root it. I followed the instructions provided in the developers threads, watched videos provided, and just finished it. It took me a while, but I figured it out after goofing a few steps. I'm all set to go, here's hoping the Titanium backup works to blocking those OTA's!

This may seem a really stupid question, but after the nook has been rooted I can't seem to find the android settings menu anywhere. All I get is the nook settings which are very limited. Is this unaccesible?

The full Android Settings menu is not there ... but head over to the development section and look for an app called NT Hidden Settings. It does a good job of pulling together what is there.
Hi All...this is my first post but certainly not my first visit to this super awesome site..and I really really need your help before doing anything else an losing more of my time...Well I got my B&NNT for Xmas and I rooted it.. and of course after ~5days it got hit with the 1.4.1 update...so back to square 1. I used the microSD card to revert back to 1.4.0 and diligently rerooted and this time made sure I blocked the auto-updating...I did that 2 days ago...installed everything (apps/widgets..you name it) I had on it secure that I had done everything right..then left it to charge when I went to sleep...woke up this morning...went to add something to my GO widget calendar...then BAM!! It flashed something about unauthorized something or other and went into a factory reset...saying it's clearing all data and going to take a few minutes!!!!! Well I was at it;s mercy and couldn't do anything while it just erased away all my setting apps widgets basically ALL my hard work...so when it finally came back up...it was old stock NT...nothing was there...no Button Savior..no Go Launcher EX nothing....the one good thing is It didn't update to 1.4.1..It's still 1.4.0...My question is WTF happened???? Sorry for the profanity...but I'm still a bit peeved...and 2. Is there ANYWAY I can get all my settings and stuff back and never have this happen ever again? Can B&N do a factory reset wirelessly? If they can and keep doing that and I can't do anything about it...I may have to return my NT =( Which when it's working the way I like it pretty awesome...Someone please help?!?!?

Thank you for this post.
I will profit it to put a problem that I've since Honeycomb and continuous with ICS.
I've created a script to have the music in media library from sdcard2, that script was in init.d folder.
Since then I' m getting the error message:
"android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. please try again."
Even after deleting the script I get this error every time that tablet starts.
I thought that with ICS upgrade this get fixed, but no, I still have the problem.
I'm sorry in advance if this is wrong topic to post this, it's just that I need 10 posts to create threads and post replys in other topics and I don't wanna just bluntly spam in order to ask one questions.
I have a problem rooting my tablet :
Model number : Sony Tablet S
Android version : 4.0.3
Kernel version : 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1
Build number : TISU0017700
I've followed this rooting guide and also used Automated ADB Driver Installer for Sony Tablet S and P.
Seems like everythings working :
{

}
But I'm getting this problem at the very start of rooting with permissions, I tried old and updated rooting tools several times, but I constantly get this one error.
In any case, I hope this problem can be solved and I have everything right. ( Was trying to root a device first time ) x_x

"Android version: 4.0.3" is the problem. To the best of my knowledge, at this time, a tablet that has already been updated to Android 4.0.3 cannot be rooted, nor can it be downgraded to a version of Android that can be rooted. You will need to wait until an exploit is discovered/created.

Try this,
Reboot into recovery goto Advanced then select Clear Dalvik Cache
If that still didn't do it, then you must reflash you Prerooted ICS,
Edit:
Do you still have some sort of file changed?,
if thats the case then i want to know which app contains the error you could try to reinstall the system app by changing its permissions etc,
with Romtoolbox for example. i will make backup try to upload the file you replace it wil the old one reinstall and then there should be a problem no more,
Also make shure you don't have any files left on you tablet wich contains changes,

In recovery mode I don't have "advanced" option.
Only 1. reboot, 2. update from zip and 3. factory reset.
edit: SOLVED
In Setting / applications / All
I clear data for program "Media Storage" and the error message stopped!

Doesn't come out of sleep
Several times a week, the tablet won't come out of sleep. Pressing the power button does nothing and I have to resort to using the reset button on the right side of the tablet. This started happening after ICS update.
Anybody else have this problem? Solutions?
yea i had that problem with HC, but maybe like 3 times since ive bought device. All i did was plug into pc and it turned on....has not happened in ics update, but it probably will.
Hey,
Just one question
Can we flash ICS by placing the zip in pendrive and connecting it to our Tablet?
Will the AIO tool find the zip?
Thanks
Nope, maby it can be possible but the recovery is not made to search in
external devices, only External SDCard inserted in the normal way,
Because if so you could simply search your PC within recovery
I know it can be used for a bootable image for PC but this won't work on Android (For now)
Who knows if some dev will change Recovery, and make it so, that he can find other devices as well.
I am new to all this. I successfully rooted the tablet without using AiO tool. But i have no idea where to proceed next. Can you dirext me to the appropriate forum/topic/post that can help me move forward.

Hello all,
Since ICS update, battery behaviour is very weird, it is dischargind very quickly, also when standby. It last one day and a hal whereas before it lasted at least 4 or 5 days... Am I the only one concerned by that problem ? Do you think it could be caused by something else than ICS update ?
Thank you all in advance...

Its most likely that you have some sort of app installed that drains your battery,
Do you use a Task killer?, that kills automatic?
Because this can cause battery drain aswell, since android has his own way of killing his apps there is no need to kill apps by an 3th-party appkiller.
You can check in your app settings, within running apps, which apps currently are
running, like a music player of movie player.
Also Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto Sync and GPS can use allot of energie.
i'm not shure how long my tablet runs if its in standby, but it is longer then yours.
No task killer running, I do that manually...
But I've uninstalled chrome beta and since last charge, 14 hours ago, tablet has lost 11%...
Kind of bizarre...

It is not possible to install CM10.1 Nightly onto a Nook Tablet

I have the very first Nook Tablet 16GB and bought it the day it came out. I've rooted other Android devices NO PROBLEM including my Samsung Galaxy Note II. I had sideloaded apps onto my Nook Tablet for a long time and finally decided I want to completely get rid of B&N software and go complete Android 4.2.2 on it but for the past 24 hours I've been tearing out what's left of my hair.
I was stuck in a boot loop so I restored to the original stock ROM. Then I couldn't figure out how to get CMW on it. Without giving you each and every headache, I ended up following this guide to root the stock I had just flashed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31271965&postcount=240
I somehow MANAGED to get CM10.1 installed, so I see the Cyano boot when I turn the device on, but now I'm stuck on the Cyanogenmod spinning logo animation. For a SPLIT second I can see the Android interface with the lock icon but it instantly disappears and goes back to the spinning logo.
Hi.
Why can't I do anything with this piece of ****? And why can't I find a SINGLE good, working tutorial on XDA forums? You would think that TWENTY FOUR HOURS of effort would get me somewhere but I'm constantly stuck. What the HELL is with this piece of **** device?
I just want CM10.1 on the EMMC. It really shouldn't be this frustrating. There isn't even a video tutorial on installing CM10.1 because I bet so many people are blowing up their devices. I tried using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221006 but of course fastboot doesn't work at all despite using the Android SDK to compile my own versions of CSipSimple JUST FINE.
Where are the real instructions on how to get this working the way I want it to be working?
NOT B&N ROM, NOT TWRP: Just CWM and CM10.1.
Wow, imagine how different we think! I think Nook Tablet is incredibly easy to root and install ROMS on. None of my phones have been anywhere near this easy to deal with!
Severeal tutorials around! I made one some months ago. It can be done easier than what I wrote back then, but here it is anyway
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2081981
(should work for CM10.1 as well as CM10. Personally I still prefer CM10 dated 1231 from here http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/cm10-0-jelly-bean-for-nook-tablet-uploading/ but that's me...)
An even easier way to do it (not the most elegant, but hey.... I like easy!) As of a couple of weeks ago I don't have a Tablet any more, so I can't check out exactly how things look, but here's an outline:
1. Download and burn the image that makes a bootable CM10 sd-card. http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/ Even if you don't intend to run CM10 from sd you can use this as a bootable CWM card.
2. Boot into that card holding "n" to get to boot menu in Cyanoboot
3. Choose "sd recovery". You should now be in CWM 6.x.x
4. Wipe Dalvik and cache
5. Flash (Install zip - choose zip) the ROM and appropriate gApps (make sure you really have the correct gApps for the ROM! They are not all the same!). You should be able to put the ROM and gApps on a different sd-crad than the one you wrote the previous img to and switch to that for the flashing.
Member Digixmax has meade several step by step instructions as well if you don't like the look of mine. Just to name one.
Well, I WAS able to flash it using this method: http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...-2-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet-0416/
But of course, it's so goddamned dumb that it installed it on my SD card regardless of me wanting to install it internally. Using Cyanoboot, I can only get into CM10.1 if I use "Boot SD Card Normal" if I boot from EMMC, it just shows the CM logo spinning forever.
Why would ANYONE want to not flash permanently? Why is it that every other ROM released on XDA implies a permanent ROM flash and never a dual boot off SD card? Why is Nook different?
I need someone to make a 2013 permanent CM10.1 video tutorial because SO many people obviously have problems with this thing and the best way to get rid of all the problems and questions is by posting a competent and thorough video tutorial. Text isn't working. I followed the text and I followed the instructions: "Download Image: ** Flash this if you want your downloaded app data to be stored in EMMC (sdcard0). "
I don't JUST want my downloaded app data to be stored--I WANT MY FULL 32GB SD CARD TO NOT HAVE TO BE IN MY NOOK TABLET WHEN I TURN IT ON FOR IT TO WORK. Why is that so difficult? Why am I able to flash my Note II so easily compared to this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228881
I'll tell you why: GIVING PEOPLE OPTIONS. Stop giving us the option to dual or even quad boot and just tell us to shut the **** up and give us ONE method: INTERNAL, PERMANENT INSTALLS.

Well, many prefer to not mess with internals. For those that do I have given instructions. In other topics there are extremely detailed instructions given by others if you prefer those. Sorry if it isn't good enough for you, but it's all I can do. It really is very easy, but of course you have to make an effort yourself.

And for what it's worth, the link you said you followed clearly states it's for running from sd-card, not for internal install. It's not "dumb", it does what it's supposed to do even though you are trying to make it do something else. Many, many people wants this. You don't, so it's not for you and you shouldn't have followed it. If you want internal install, don't follow an sd-install instruction!
Cool it a couple of notches and I'm sure you can get it all sorted. Including making the change to get app data saved internally once the ROM is installed.

Hi. Thanks for the response. I made a video just now in response to you:
I'm considering making another one right now since a new CM10.1 nightly just came out: http://get.cm/?device=acclaim
I want to show you that it won't even work installing the new nightly through CWM. It shouldn't be this difficult. Typically, when you root one your devices, that means you have the power to do whatever you want with it, but as I just proved in my video, that isn't the case with the Nook Tablet.
Okay. I got it working using the method in this video:
NOBODY else mentioned using FACTORY WIPE. That's what seemed to fix it because Wipe Cache/Dalvik cache wasn't doing crap.
Now my only problem is how to repartition the memory because it's giving me two internal storage listings: 5.50GB and 7.45GB. And of course when I pop in my SD card, it's actually working the way I want it to and giving me the full 28GB. I find it strange that the SD card is listed as "Internal memory" in Solid Explorer, though.
I don't make videos. I rarely watch videos. I certainly don't go looking for them if there aren't proper links.
So I have no idea where you have gone wrong since some of what you write makes very little sense.,
I have tried to give you easy to follow instructions. I still think you should stick to the very stable CM10 I suggested instead of the nightlies that you apparently are not getting to work but that really shouldn't make much difference. I link to it in my reply with the instructions.
Nothing more I can do but maybe someone more patient will come along and give you what you want.

I'd love to link my videos but this ****ty website prevents "new" users from posting links. VoIP is better than text anyway. Skype, Mumble, Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Tinychat, and Jitsi are ALL better than limited forum communication. I made the video showing you how screwed up it is and if you're not going to watch it and see the evidence for yourself, then you might as well say evolution is false or that the earth is flat. You said it was easy but I showed you in video that it isn't and what a shocker, you don't want to see it.
OK, I did watch the first few minutes of your first video while waiting for the vet... WHY DO YOU BOOT FROM SD????? You install in internally and then you boot from sd... Makes no sense! Once it's installed, just take the sd card out and boot from internals. Or choose internal boot from Cyanoboot.

Because THIS is what happened when I booted it internally:
But like I said, I got it working via another method. It's internal now, but the only problem is my internal storage is out of whack. I have 2x internal storage listings and then my normal SD card:

That's normal. Internal is three partitions: Around 3 GB for the OS (doesn't show up in "storage"), around 5GB for apps and then the 8GB that you can keep whatever you want in.

Okay, thanks. I just wish it wasn't such a huge pain in the ass to get to this point. CM10.1's interface is so much better than that B&N garbage. ezPDF and Mantano are really the only reasons I use my Nook Tablet. Adios I'm a ghost.
