Hi,
I just bought one Samsung Galaxy S wifi 4.0 and would like to know if anyone is aware of the possibility to upgrade the "default" Android version 2.2.2 (Froyo) to a newer one.
It seems that a couple of applications out there do not run on this version. For example NDrive 11 says its incompatible with this and a HTC running 2.3.4 is compatible. Maybe the version or something else?
I already ran Kies and it says the version 2.2.2 is the latest.
Thanks for all the help you can give me.
Regards.
I've seen a video (found through google) on the net where the galaxy s wifi 4 was running Android 2.3. But it was unclear which version and it was beeing said that it will be upgraded when they release it in the US. But with all that Apple patent struggle raging in the background, I guess it will be at least delayed. I got mine in Germany, though.
Sorry I can't help with your question but I wondered if I could trouble to share your experience of the Wifi 4? Especially in relation to it's value/worth as a media player?
I'm considering buying the 3.6 variant but I'd like to get as much information before I take the leap.
Thanks in advance.

Moving to Q&A
any chance of running google voice on this via wifi for sms?
Got one today from best buy. Overall happy with it, but its a lot of money for what it is, especially considering the paltry 8gb of storage built in. If you add the cost of a 32 gig microsd card, its up over 250 bucks. The device is good, touchscreen is good.
Edit: It has gingerbread, and it runs very smoothly. Also has the real android market.
In my country, the Samsung galaxy S wifi 4.0 only comes with Froyo...I check with Samsung and was told that upgrades to Gingerbread are not available..
Any chances anyone know how to do it ourselves ?
cheers
Us Version with gingerbread
I've just seen on Engadget that the Galaxy S wifi 4.0 in the US is sold with gingerbread!! Any news about dumps or updates available?
Just updated to Gingerbread 2.3.5 with kies!

How did you upgrade it? I opened Kies and it says it is up to date (with FroYo).

Which version do you have? I've seen a post on w00t about how to flash a 2.3.5 ROM to the /TTT version.

Er, well, I guess I should have been more specific about that. Which model do you have? Not the android version(when you connect it to Kies, it should say it in parenthesis in the box where it says that you have the latest firmware). It'll be 3 letters.
As far as the link goes, I do have it, but I'm not allowed to post links yet, so I'll PM you it if I can. If not, I'll post it here eventually(when I get to 8 posts).

It looks as though it is for the G70 - the 5.0. I have the G1 - 4.0.
I think the info you are looking for is YP-G1CW/COO.
I picked it up a month or so back and now, apparently, I should have waited - I live in the US and now it seems that they are available with Android 2.3.5 already installed on them.
Thanks for any help you can be...if the G70 file will work, I will try to install that.

Ah, yeah, I forgot about that. Looking at the firmware that I know is available for the G1, I don't see any 2.3.5 firmware out there as of yet. I'll keep my eyes open though.

Do you see any firmware out there for the G1 that is higher than 2.2.2?
Do you know if the upgrade directions will be the same as the ones on W00t?

Don't know why, but my kies instead said that there was an update available.
Perhaps samsung release different updates in different countries.
My model is exactly: YP-G1CW/XEF

Anyone out there that reads this know how to decipher the model number?
More importantly, is there anyone that knows of any Android 2.3.5 ROMs that will work with the YP-G1?
Thanks to everyone out there...

I am in the US (Got my SGS WiFi 4.0 on eBay before I realized it was coming out in the US). Now, I want to update (NOT opposed to rooting) but the majority of the successes I have seen are for the 5.0 version (YP-G70).
Anyone got any suggestions or pointers for getting the update?
I have researched the model number I have and it appears that it is out in the UK and maybe Canada (among others). Would it be possible to maybe back up a YP-G1 that has a Gingerbread update and "restore it" onto mine?
Thoughts from developers?? Anyone??

Not sure that system update has a lot to do with root. First of all, you need to check if there're official updates for your device. And then, it's quite risky to install unofficial system updates (if there're any).
thanks for your answers. At the moment there isn't official update for my device...So i would to install a new cooked rom, like ICS... It's possible on my phone?

That depends on the ROM and the requirements it needs. You'd better consult ROM developers in this case.

There will be no 4.4 official stock for galaxy s3, never, ever.
If you need 4.4.4 like CM go to cyanogenmod site and follow the steps (easy peasy installation).
It's true, that iam a newbie in Android's world.
I own samsung s3 since 2 months & it's my first android experience.
That's why i need a little explanation
why official stock rom for version 4.4.4. isn't available for our phones.
When Win XP has arrived , it was for all PCs, isn't it ?

That is samsungs decision, after some time they stop the development for the phone, and it's been 2 years now with s3, from ics to jelly bean, and the time has come and development is stopped.
But, you have samsung kitkat ports here on xda under android development, but, since they are unofficial there might be some bugs if you don't pair them with a good kernel.
Since you are new, i suggest you to take a break and read, read all the FAQ, read every info, read about EFS backup (very important) and then, when you have all the information you need, go with rom flashing etc.
And listen to me, if you won't read and inform yourself you will mess something up and come back here to ask for help, and first response you will get is read before doing anything.
Happy readin, flashing, cheers
In this case here is my next question
On the horizon appears the next version - Android 5.0
If i understand correctly, that means once again Android x.x will not be made available for our phones and we will need to get again some custom roms, aren't we ?
I am thinking about rooting my nvidia SHIELD tablet and i had a few questions about rooting. I've never done it so I won't understand any fancy terms you guys might know.
1. When I root it can I update the software at the release date. (ex. say I have 4.4 kitkat and I was rooted. lolipop comes out. Can I upgrade the day it comes out or do I need to wait for a root version or something?)
That's all for now THANKS GUYS!
You will not be able to use googles default update mechanism. Depending on the rom you have to update manually...

Oh so what exactly is a ROM? Is CyanogenOS a ROM or am I incorrect?
I have Samsung J7 mobile. I am willing to use latest version of android on it. Can anyone explain me how I can do it?
Thanks in advance..

Hello and welcome to XDA Q&A section of the Forum.
I assume you have some knowledge in the android world of modding (some people don't and some people do) and that you have rooted your phone, here is the thread to the ROM.
Goodluck and hopefully I helped you, if I did, hit "thanks"

True but who likes Samsungs stock ROM any way? It is buggy, full of bloatware and eats your RAM like Google chrome.
May be.but I have hugucrespect for stock ROMs since I experienced all custom ROMs in so many devices.
If you have rooted your stock ROM,Its enough.
And I really love stock samsung and LG ui.
