At a bit of a loss, I've had my Galaxy S3 for a little over a months now. It's been stable and I've had no issues.
Yesterday I loaded a app (SPA 3D Theme) wasn't stable so I removed it. Was loaded from Play store.
After removal phone seemed stable and no other problems.
Last night as the batt started going flat I connected it to a charger and a while later it seems to have rebooted itself and started with the battery screen sat there for about 10 minutes and then goes to the Samsung GalaxyS3 GT-I9300 load screen and hangs there indefinitely.
1st tried to reboot by holding power button
2nd Batt Pull
3rd Reset with Vol UP/ home/Power
All do the same as before.
Only different reaction is with Vol down where it puts it into firmware mode.
The phone is on factory firmware I have not done or been prompted for any updates. ( I have previously checked under Kies but haven't done so for a couple of weeks)
SP said 3-5 days to repair it. I'm not keen on sending in a new phone as they don't have what I would call a sterling history as far as repairs go.
It looks like its a corrupt firmware for and I suspect a reload will fix it.
I have been trying to find the factory or latest firmware for the phone but only one that seems to be for my regoin is the CSC OVJALE9 (Algeria)
JA---> South Africa
JC---> Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671969
I'm In South Africa on Vodacom (vodafone)
What can you recommend as the way to proceed ?
I'm thinking the latest stock firmware but either excluding the CSC info or reloading it after with the one mentioned above.
Is there a way to exclude CSC from the update with the hope that original info will be retained.
Factory reset via recovery mode first .
Full phone wipe and factory reset second
Third flash original firmware via Odin .
Four flash stock firmware .
Firmware stock rom thread or sammobile.com or CHECKFUS.

Hello all,
To keep it concise:
Received my SII from Vodafone yestersday - all is well.
Proceeded to flash the phone with XWK37 firmware and rooted the phone by flashing chainfire's insecure kernel, applying root and then flashing the stock XWK37 kernel - have used Odin before and all is well.
By the time I finish playing with the phone it's 3.00am so I put the SII on charge (battery at around 30%) - all is still suspiciously well.
Get up at 7am to take my kid to school and when I get back I discover that the menu key no longer does anything when pressed (home key and return key still work fine) - it doesn't light up nor does it bring up a menu - all is not well.
So far I've tried:
Reflashing both the firmware and kernal - no effect.
Removing sim card, sd card and battery - no effect.
Hard resetting (both via button method and android privacy menu) / formatting sd card - no effect.
Dialling *#*#2663#*#* and updating the touch firmware - no effect.
Accused my wife of breaking my phone before she went to work - no effect.
Now If it's a hardware problem (which would be disappointing since I've only had the phone for 1 day) then I'm stuck since there is no stock UK Vodafone firmware available yet to flash back to before handing in for repair - plus I don't want to go back to using my N97 in the meantime.
Yes I preordered the N97 before it was released and got myself stuck in an 18 year contract - words can't describe how much I hate that worthless piece of Nokia - I kept it to teach myself a lesson, early adoptions don't pay off.
The only other relevant thing I can think of is that I was trying to install ADW launcher (previously used it a lot) before I went to sleep last night however although the phone claimed that it downloaded and installed - no icon appeared and I was unable to launch it although it's wallpapers showed up when I was switching my live wallpaper.
Can anyone help with any idea's of what it might be aside from a hardware issue?
If it is a hardware issue, anyone know when the Vodafone UK firmware might shown up?
Tell you what, I'll throw in a free N97 for anyone who solves the problem
Thanks guys.
K37 firmware ????
I would flash old firmware like WKDD .
Possible with pit and repartition checked if that failed . Not used either yet on SGS2 but always cleared SGS1 by that method .

Thanks for the reply jje,
The XWKE7 is the latest generic XEU firmware available from this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I flashed it exactly as the guide stipulated.
However I didn't even think to try flashing it to a earlier version to see if the problem might be with the actual firmware.
Should be finishing work in a couple of hours so will try flashing the older XWKDD
firmware and see if that relocates the menu key.
Will update as soon as I know.
Damn.
No luck - tried flashing KDD (and also KE1/KE2 for good measure) accompanied by full memory wipes - still no luck. All these firmware files come in one .tar package which i place into the PDA section of Odin.
Even tried one where the pda, modem and csc were split into seperate files from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278&page=11
Still no return of the menu key.
When I am flashing - I leave the pit section of Odin completely alone and leave re-partition unticked - I take it this is correct?
It's strange because apart from the menu key - the S2 is working perfectly.
The only other thing I can think of is that the Vodafone branded version of the S2 in won't work with any other generic firmware which is pretty unlikely methinks.
jje - "...possible with pit and repartition checked if that failed.." - I didn't quite understand what you were recommending there mate - should I be using a pit file and checking repartition?
Any other ideas guys?
Off to go glare at my wife's dumbed down yet fully working iphone - it's laughing at me...
I've got the same problem. The menu button works just when it wants. Sometimes it doesn't react at all, sometimes it works perfectly.
I have KE1 firmware, I have rooted it and unrooted (for sim unlocking), then installed original kernel via Odin. Everything was wonderful and I was the happiest guy in the world! One day later the button began behaving like a goast! as chronicpoetic mentioned.
I would like to try installing the new firmware via Odin, but I am afraid that if it's hardware problem, then it won't be taken by service.
Any suggestions?
sounds like hardware faults guys :/
Thank you for reply! I thougt it was too, but... read below
I found out something else.
The menu button works, but with an extreme long delay - 15-30 seconds! More often just right after screen unlock. It just appears and disappers 30 times if I pushed it 30 times before.
And still it can work just perfectly. Sometimes after connecting it to PC or charging it. That dosn't work like a rule.
I am trying to find the reason of such unusual behaviour, but I am lack of expirience.
Any help?
Hello man
I hope that my info will help you
I was in samfirmware.com site and i remembered your problem and i recall that you say Vodafone

sorry for my bad english
Yeapp, I visited the partner of samsung service center, they said it was a hardware.
Same thing here, any progres?
Just revisited this post - I managed to get a hold of the original Vodafone Firmware from Intratech's thread, flashed it and returned the phone - turns out it was a hardware fault.
Vodafone promptly replaced mine folks.

Having searched 2 days for a solution (and failed), I feel this forum is my last hope:
So finally Kies notified me that the 2.3.4 update is available for my phone. After backing up all my data I started the update process.
It took 3-4 times & one windows restart for Kies to successfully download the firmware and start the actual update of the phone - the android logo appeared on the phone and the blue progress bar started advancing.
Both Kies and the phone froze on 6% for two hours. So I disconnected the USB cable, removed the battery from the phone, switched it back on and the lovely phone-yellow exclamation-compute threesome appeared.
Kies suggested an emergency recovery which pretty much looked the same - this time it froze on 7%. Also tried doing the emergency recovery from a different PC.
I came across the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293144
But I have no idea what my phone version is and how to choose which firmware to use (and obviously can't or don't know how to get this data out of my phone)
I do remember that the guy that sold me the phone said he buys them in Spain.
I'm really hopeless and will greatly appreciate any help that can be provided.
I also hate Kies.
read this thread, use odin and you can upgrade to 2.3.5 by using any of the KI or KJ firmware you like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
you are not limited to 2.3.4.
what country are you using the phone in?
I'm using it in Israel (but haven't installed any of the localized roms)
So it is ok to simply choose the last firmware under the original firmwares section:
XWKJ3
PDA:XWKJ3
PHONE: XXKI4
Date: 25/10/2011
Android 2.3.5
XEN (Netherlands)
Sorry for the dumb questions
yes, it is but need to input your data settings manually.
Thanks!
2.3.5 is up and running.
I bought my phone from virgin Canada, and a few months ago I moved to south Korea. I just upgraded to ics last week, and now my phone thinks its in/from the Nederlands.
I tried changing the csc to Bsk/bsm (whatever Canada is) and still it thinks its European.
Samsung apps says my account doesn't work, my google play is all I'm euros, and to to it off Samsung apps on kies says my phone is not compatible.
What do I do? Thanks!
Shut down the phone and enter in recovery mode from (Volume Up + Home + Power button), then do a full wipe.
After the phone has rebooted shut down again and reflash your pda and csc using odin
I forgot to mention.. My phone is still locked, my Sim card does not work, and my phone is also not rooted. If rooting my phone is the only way to fix this, then I will look further into it, but is there any other fix besides using Odin?
Also, I've done three full wipes on the phone and no luck. But when I take the battery out of the phone while ours powered on, and place it back in turning the phone on again Samsung apps and google play worlds with Canadian currency again, but when I close the apps it resets to euro.
You don't need root to use odin, but if u want to try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1505172
Is your firmware completely canadian?

I believe so... I checked my build via about phone, iml74k.ugld3, and kernel, 19100mugld3-c1377577.. I checked the numbers online and via xda, checks out to be Canadian numbers.
I thought I needed to root to use Odin, ha ha. Ok, if there isn't any solution I'll use that as a last resort
So here is the update, I've found...
GT-I9100M_BMC_ICS_4.0.3_I9100MUGLD3_I9100MBMCLD3_I9100MUGLD3_Original, via devsrom4android.blogspot.kr/2012/05/bell-canada-samsung-galaxy-s2-ics-403[dot]html?m=1 that website.
Downloaded the file, found Odin through the Cnet website, checked the CSC which was BSM, canadian, turned off phone, volume down+home+power, plugged phone into pc, Odin turned yellow, loaded the rom in pda, installed, and still my phone thinks it's European.
When I FIRST turned on the phone, it didn't ask about the software update or anything. But it is updated. So, i tried Samsung apps, it worked and was Canadian. Then I closed Samsung apps, the wifi disconnected and reconnected, then Samsung apps things it's from Nederlands.... again.
So, this is my situation now, I hope any other suggestions would do well
hi,
For a day now I've been trying to figure out the way around my problem and I couldn't. But I'm just a beginner, I hope you guys can help.
short version: After official OTA update my stock, unrooted GT-I9300 boots only until one of the logo screens. I want badly to keep apps data, especially sms'es and voice recorder files. Downloading the update via KIES in download mode repeats update procedure but then again the boot ends on samsung logo screen (the one with just 'samsung' letters if that matters).
longer version: I've been using stock ROM forever and lived happily with stock ROM on Android 4.3 (except for laaags) Yesterday I went to check if an update is available - it was, so I downloaded it. It was all fine, I got to 'optimizing app 222/222' screen then the phone rebooted. It went through GT-I9300 screen, carrier screen, and in the end it stuck on pulsing LED and letters on the screen: 'SAMSUNG'. And now it happens each time I turn the phone on. I can still go to download mode easily and to recovery mode too.
I've reinstalled the update used KIES (2.6.3.14044_14) with the phone in download mode but that gets me to the same place (optimizes all 222 aps, reboots and hangs up at the same sceen).
Is there a way to have this fixed while keeping apps data?
this thread gives me hope there is, since there are 'NO WIPE' files, but sadly this one is only for US Verizon, not international..
(as a newb I can't post links but it's there) - s3forums site, thread galaxy-s3-hacking-mods/3292-guide-unbrick-restore-your-galaxy-s3-back-100-stock
my device:
Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 (International), carrier - Orange Poland
Android 4.3, no root, Stock ROM
There is a good chance you only need to factory reset the phone but in that you will lose your data. You can try odin and flashing the latest stock rom for your phone (orange poland). Do not flash any other carrier, do not do anything with a pit file. Do not attempt to go back to the old firmware unless it was an earlier 4.3.
Get your carrier update from samsung updates and a copy of odin.
Put your phone in download mode via vol down +home +power and then connect it to the pc on a usb cable
Open odin, click "ap" or "pda" (same button, different versions) and select your poland orange 4.3 rom and then click "start".
Wait until the phone fully reboots and odin says "pass". Disconnect the phone.
This shouldn't wipe data but if this doesn't work then you have to bite the bullet and factory reset.

thanks. I tried various firmwares - branded and non-branded, current and a previous one (but also 4.3) - but I still got locked on the same screen. After factory reset it stayed on the very same screen for a minute, but then it came back to life.
Hi
I read many threads in many forums but still hope to get my data back as it represents bits of my life and more important than the phone itself, though some cases were similar but none exactly same plus i care much about my data and I never rooted, messed up with or even tried to do anything like that with my phone
here's what happened in details on my Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 maybe someone can help me
phone's SSN: -I9300GSMH
Made in Vietnam by Samsung
bought from Egypt where i live, SIM-free, not carrier locked, though i bought it from the carrier's (Orange subsidary in Egypt called mobinil) official store with warranty 1 year that now expired
the old firmware was 4.1.2, i got its build number from colleagues with similar phone bought same time as me I9300XXEMF6
here's what happened:
1- OTA firmware upgrade notification, downloaded package, options were cancel , install and install all package(somthing like that)
2- unfortunately chose install all package(yes i didn't read so i donno which version this was installing) and scheduled to start 5:20am
3- at 10:30am phone screen showing "starting apps"
4- after more than an hour still the same so i rebooted
5- stuck at samsung blue splash screen logo
6-removing battery and back in didn't help even for more than an hour, Samsung Kies won't recognize the device
7- Recovery mode give strange behaviour, didn't find similar in any forum, it brings the green droid man with a counter (like installing or loading somthing) reaches 27% exactly then this droid man flips on its back, red exclamation sign triangle on its belly and it dies, here's the ling to small video showing my mobile doing this
"https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0RJAWx6Ec-MUUlncVdjWFp0c1k/edit?usp=sharing" (there's no spam in the link, so plz just copy paste in browser to view, this is important to help show my problem)
yes that's RECOVERY MODE-->phone reboots itself coming back to stuck at samsung logo
there are no options, no menu on recovery mode just the after pressing the (Vol Up+home+power) combination it starts by itself this loading something till it dies and restarts, it doesn't give me any options or any control or allow me to interfere
yes download mode is working but i really hope there is another option than flashing the mobile and loosing everything, my whole life history that was on the mobile
praying God someone can help find me something to make it continue past the 27% or even go back to normal without loosing any of my stuff
really looking forward to your support..i'll be waiting for it b4 i do anything
many many thanks
Flash firmware with Odin and next time back up you're data.
Thanks andrewwright
if you just could be more specific..is this the only solution?
if yes, then which firmware version to flash that won't risk loosing my data? 4.1.2? or a newer version?
please if anyone else with less risky suggestions,,please your help is highly welcome
Flash a custom recovery like philz, use aroma file manager to save your data to external sd card.
Go read and learn how to do this from philz thread in original development.
This won't enable your phone to boot, but might save your data -if it is still there.
