USB OTG is not working at all?? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my S3 yesterday.
I tried connecting up some devices with an OTG cable. None of them seem to work. They dont even power up, so the S3 doesnt even have a chance to recognize them. I tried a fat32 formatted memory stick, a mouse, and a microSD card reader.
I'm using the "motorola camera connection kit" which is the OTG cable for the moto xoom. Its working fine on my xoom so its not the cable, unless theres some reason this cable would be incompatible? (linked pic below)
Could this be a problem with my device?:crying: Charging seemed fine (a bit slow from what i picked up but i havent had enough time to actually judge). Transferring files over worked fine as well.

The (inofficial) USB-OTG cable from my brother's Xoom works fine on my S3, so they should in theory be compatible.
It should say "USB connector connected" in the notification bar when plugging in the cable without anything attached. Please confirm.
However you mention "power up"; what exactly are you trying to connect?
External unpowered hard drives will usually not work with the S3 since they need more juice than the device can deliver. Powered ones or USB-Sticks should work fine though.

Thanks for your reply
It doesnt say anything when i plug the cable in. So i'm guessing it doesnt recognize it at all. Is it possible that the official moto cable is only compatible with moto devices?
I should've been more clear. What i meant is the memory stick i connected has a little light that flashes when u connect it to a pc and this light didnt come on. Same thing with the mouse. Thats what i meant by power up.

Anybody else with a suggestion? if my ports defective, i need to go exchange it by the end of the week.

How about purchasing a cable for the s3 and trying that. As the cable your using is not intended for the s3 how can you know for sure what's at fault (the phone or the cable).
Like the previous poster said your phone should inform you that the otg cable has been connected.
Sent from my GT-I9300

Finally had a chance to get another USB OTG cable and i'm glad to say everythings working fine. I guess the moto cables just not compatible.

Desk charger/sync cradles.

Has anyone here tried one of these cheap ones from Hong Kong?
They are cheaper than the nearest option, and come with the right plug too.
It can't be expensive cause it consist only from ac/dc adaptor, usb plug and battery charger. I think it's right device.

I'm sure it is, I just wondered if it's likely to be good quality.
Tell you what, I'll order one and report back here once I've used it.
As promised, I bought it and here's the verdict.
Basically, it does what it says on the tin. There was a slight problem with the usb connection, but that was always the case with this computer unless I use a particular lead. Using the lead that came with it, it wouldn't connect. but using the one I normally use it works fine.

Having used cradles before, this one is slightly more awkward to connect but that's because it uses the usb connector. Previous ones have been spring loaded contacts and the pda would just drop into the cradle. This one requires a little force, but nothing major.
I've yet to determine if the charger works as fast as the original one.
All in all, well worth the money.

Hmm, seems I spoke too soon. The PDA won't charge unless the computer is on.
The 5V adaptor plugs into the back of the stand, as does the usb lead. Either of these will bring on the blue LED on the base, but the usb lead lights it brighter. I suspect there may be some problem with the 5V from the adaptor.
I shall investigate and report back (if anyone's reading this...)
charging with PC off
Hi -- I think I've got the same charger as you, and mine seems to charge fine with the computer powered off. . .
Alan
Having investigated further, it appears that the +5V from the charger and the +5V from the USB are linked directly. This means that with either one connected singly, it's fine, with both connected and the PC on, it's also fine.
But, with the PC off the +5V from the charger is fed back through the USB lead into the PC which pulls down the voltage somewhat.
I discovered this when I turned off the PC and noticed some front panel lights glowing slightly. I unplugged the cradle and they went off, and the blue LED on the charger became brighter.
dock
hi,
i've got the same "hong kong" dock as xmastree.
I think this is a good dock, simple and cheap.

Proprietary to USB-female?

Is there a cable for the prime for USB host? I want a USB port but so far I can only find cables for the Galaxy tab or for micro USB ports. I don't want the keyboard dock, I have my laptop for computing. I just want a cable for it. So far I can only find the Asus dongle for the TF101(compatible right? Same proprietary port?), but that's only for an SD card, not a USB-female port.
Do you mean this? If you need to hook up a usb device to the prime, you need a dongle like the one below.

good question, i was looking at picking one of these up so i could use my ps3 controller with my prime's included charging cable.....
http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Female-5-Pin-Male-Adapter/dp/B002S7PS8M
USB female to mini-usb male.
would this work and do i really need to shell out for that box, i just don;t understand what exactly it does, i think for what i'm trying to do it should be fine, i could see the issues when trying to use a usb hdd as i could see more drivers needed to even access the data from the drive....i would think a ps3 controller would just show up....any suggestions or buying some extra box to carry around 100% necessary....

Bought this last week thinking the same thing.
Does not recognize devices. Something is weird about the dock cable.
I was trying to pair my PS3 controller, I ended up doing it with the keyboard port instead.
On a somewhat related note, I dont recommend you buy the item at that link. I ended up chucking mine out because it was too loose to hold the cables in... and its mustard yellow...eww
I've yet to confirm this myself, but I believe the dock connector uses different pins for "USB Host" (ex: plugging in a controller to the tablet) and "USB Device" (ex: plugging the tablet into a PC) modes. Using a USB Female-Female adapter, as others above have proven, will not work.
Wait...I spoke to soon, the link above is useless. It's backordered and I can't find it anywhere else. Anyone have an idea?
I got mine from microcenter, in tustin, ca. There might still be one there. And yea I first tried a female to female adapter on the usb charging cable it came with and no dice. However this adapter does work. Plugged my 360 controller in and played some shadowgun.

Use old lapdock as a tablet dock?

Backstory:
I have a lapdock from my old Atrix that had the LCD go out on it. I was wondering if it would be possible to just use it as a battery, keyboard, and usb hub for my Nexus 7. I took apart the dock to access the micro usb plug to go into my Nexus 7 but have no use for the HDMI. However the lapdock is enabled when a device is plugged into the hdmi.
Question:
How do I enable the lapdock without anything plugged into the HDMI.

Can you get any pictures? It would be helpful.
If you the cables out, have you tried plugging the microusb into the nexus 7 and the microHDMI into the phone(to power it on) to test whether the nexus 7 even detects the keyboard, mouse, charger of the dock?

I Don't have any devices with micro HDMI anymore (Atrix went to craigslist). I ordered an adapter for regular USB but from China so who knows when I'll see that.
The nexus 7 doesn't support HDMI out at all. Google confirmed that... What you could do is make some like of dummy or I read somewhere to short some wires... Read before you do anything though...

I know the Nexus 7 doesn't support HDMI. Thats why I'm here asking if anyone knows how to short the HDMI. Having trouble finding anything on it.
sorry for digging and old thread but until now im using the lapdock as otg hub, a keyboard and track pad. i have to remove the lcd screen since i have no use for it. very useful indeed up to now 2018. i usually use this setup playing pubg mobile. i dont a tablet but probably it also works
if you have a broken lapdock lcd, then you can have mine for free. except you shoulder the shipping of course

Black MHL To HDMI HDTV Adapter OTG Card Reader Connection Kit
It let you connect to HDMI without external power, also if you use external power you can use HDMI and USB hard drive at the same time, it is just really really amazing, Sammy has really improved their MHL and OTG support.
Note: I am using this device on my Note 3 N9005 I am not sure about other devices

Mhl 2.0?
Iv been dealing with these for about a year now. From my s3 to my note 3. With the s3 it's 2.0 so you have to provide external power but these things are the tits when it comes to the note 3 with 3.0 you can run USB and HDMI without power. I play games and use it for work with all wireless accessories it's awesome. Supports 1080p at 60hrtz. We sell them in our repair shop and on Ebay. Not often though as "normal" people don't see the capabilities of this lol.
Go buy one their awesome.

Is there something like this that has a port for charging? I wanted something like this to hook up to a monitor or an HDTV so I could play my emulators on a big screen.

It's not immediately apparent, but the device pictured (and others like it, one of which I have) do have a port for charging: the micro usb. When I got mine it took me a minute to realize that, then it hit me that power would really be the only use for that port. So I plug one of my Sammy charging cables into it during use.

Oh, derp. I didn't even see the small port there, looked like a small microSD card slot. Thanks for pointing that out!
How do you use this darn dev?

a little bit off topic but I have bought 2 USB OTG cables off eBay and neither works with my Z ultra, but they do work with the wife's Note 3. Does anyone know if there's a setting I'm maybe forgetting to turn on or if I need a specific cable?
There's no power at all going to the devices I connect, have tried everything from keyboards, thumb drives and dualshock controllers.

The one i bought from Amazon a year ago works perfect, it was $1.99
I didn't do anything special to get USB OTG working.
It could be that your USB device is drawing too much power, which a Note could manage but the XZU can't?
I don't (yet) have this phone, so maybe I'm missing something...
Why not flip the phone the other way, so the USB port is on the top?
the fully rectangular version is from when not all devices supported otg so they made them that way as a sort of failsafe to stop unsupported devices being tampered with (i personally believe it was to coin in further on cable replacements on high end devices)
if you have one of the old rectangular otg cables laying about just carefully file away at the edges a little bit until it fits smoothly (dont force it!!)...
tested with an old nokia n8 cable on my lg g2 and it works just fine!!!

the book cover/case I use has a crease so it can act as a stand, and the phone ends up held with the USB port bottom/right. It then leaves the mag charge port free for power.
