Hello,
I am very new to this rooting n' stuff for android phones. I have been using the past three days trying to get this to work, but everyone seems to have their own way of doing these things on, so it is really, really hard to follow a guide when the other guide for installing another kernel is using something from the root and is done a whole other way. I simply can't find head and tale in this anymore.
This is why I now, as a last resort, scream for your help!
I have successfully rooted my phone using revolutionary, and I do have the clockwork mod. I also got this superuser thing to work, so I do indeed have root access. I originally wanted to do this so I could overclock it, but that hasn't been working for me either.
But first things first...
I am having a lot of trouble with the clockwork mod. When I enter recovery in the HBOOT it works just fine, but ALL menu's won't work at all. What just happens is that all the letters disappears and only the background remains. I can press to power button again to get the text back, and I can choose between the menu's but even the power off menu just make the text go away and leave just the background. To get out of it I have to take the battery out of it.
I have tried to use the revolutionary once more to download the clockwork mod. Usually it says something like "What are you doing etc. etc." but now I just get "Waiting for device". It can't seem to get in contact with the phone anymore at all.
It can still boot just fine and works very good, and I can still use adb, so maybe I am just doing something totally wrong.
This problem came when I wanted to install another kernel, RCMix3D so I would be able to use the program set CPU I bought from google play. The method of "unlocking higher frequency" on the website for the application did not work, I only get a failure from the adb.
Essentially I just wanted the ViperROM but I can't find anywhere if it works for the GSM version or not. Since I am having trouble with the battery life it would be awesome with another ROM which saves more power than the stock one does. And with a kernel that would make me overclock it as much as I want would just be awesome.
But in my frustration I have now closed everything and I really hope you can point me somewhere with a guide for this exact thing, or write a quick one here.
But what firstly really pisses me off is the clockwork mod not working, how can I reinstall that without using revolutionary?
As I am a huge noob to this phone thing (first smartphone) I really need step by step instructions, but don't think I am incompetent. I work with both hardware and software each day, so I do indeed know a thing or two.
In big hopes of help,
Jesper
Hi Jesper,
I just have 2 quick questions.
Are you S-ON or S-OFF?
If you're S-ON, that's why you can't get the Overclock to work properly.
Second question, is it a GSM or CDMA EVO 3D? I'm going to guess GSM.
Also, you can boot into your ROM and get full SuperUser, correct?
If yes, download the 4EXT Recovery and install it from the ROM.
Once you download that and get it done, I'll help you out some more.
Thank you for your answer!
I have S-OFF, and my HBOOT is 1.49.1107 from revolutionary.
It is a GSM yes.
I do have full access using superuser. I have confirmed this because both Set CPU and ROM manager asks for this and can gain access.
I have also bought and installed 4EXT Recovery control 2.4.1

Alright, that's great.
You didn't have to buy it, but it's ok.
Now, is all your stuff backed up so that you can flash a custom ROM?
Before you flash a ROM, make sure it is from the GSM section, you can't use one from CDMA or it will brick your phone.
Is there anything else you wanted to do?

I do not need to back anything up. It is all on google's servers so I just have to sync it and it will be as it is now. I can't seem to find any good ROM's that prioritize battery life. My dock can't deliver much power so I need some power saving ROM for when it is in there and showing video, and then I would love to get it overclocked because many things just seems to be quite slow. A new ROM may just be enough, but still.

Well, the ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0 still won't work. When I go to HBOOT then select recovery to get to the ClockworkMod I get the ClockworkMod menu, but nothing happens when I choose an option. It just shows the background and that's it. I have to take the battery out to power off the phone, even that option won't work.
EDIT:
Oh well, I played with that 4EXT and I got it installed instead of ClockworkMod. 4EXT works just fine for me, and awesome that it uses touch too.
Now I just need a ROM for better battery life and a kernel for overclocking. I can see that you have GSM too, can you recommend a good one for what I am looking for?

Well, I'm not very concerned about the battery, but I am using the KingCobra ICS Rom.
Try it out. Try a few ROMs.
You'll find something for you!
And just turn things off when you don't need them.
Use the task manager and disable data and such when not it use.
I can however say that I have better battery life with this ROM.

I am just way too scared if it turns out it is not for GSM and I might brick it.
Also, when installing an ICS ROM, do I need to do anything else, or does the ROM just come with ICS and I will have that too?

I tried that already, but my dock still can't give power enough. Within a few hours it loses 25% battery while playing video in the dock, even when connected to the AC adapter.
What about kernels? How do I install them? Just doing the "install zip from sd card" in 4EXT?
Since this is my very first time ever trying this I am very scared I may brick it

Hey everyone.
I recently rooted my Hero GSM phone and tried to play around with some Custom Roms.. I'm currently running FroydVillain with a 691 kernel and I like it a lot, but want to know if there's any other Roms running smoother on the Hero packing Froyo..
I used to have the official eclair (2.1) with launcherpro installed, but wanted to try Froyo out because I heard that it runs 450 % faster than eclair. And since I went over to Custom Roms my batterytime has been lowered significantly..
Also if anyone could tell me what RADIO's are I would be very happy
Sorry for all the questions, but I have just one more..does updating the recovery software help on performance? I have an old version I think.. can anyone please link the newest?
I find the market of available Roms so large and wanted to know if anyone could recommend some Roms and include some links on where to get..
Froyo prefered since I just got used to how it works.
Thanks in advance

Latest Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
The radio I recommend is the latest GSM one at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-radio-roms-download-links
Are you using latest Froyd, as we've got reports of 2 full days of battery life.
But 450% is an exaggeration, as it's based on a nexus 1 without vs. with JIT. You should get > 5 Mflops though in linpack using froyo.
Regarding the question in the title. You could search around here a little on Q&A since it has been asked a lot of times But mostly you'll get the answer that it's different from person to person and everyone has their favourite ROM for instance my favourite ROM is Cronos (anything) but I'm guessing pulser_g2's would be VillainROM (LOL)
Lol. Yeah it depends on what you want. I mentioned Froyd as you're on it already, but sense 2.1 roms do still exist, though you might try disappointed with performance.
I used a sense rom recently and had to remove it as I couldn't bear the slowness, even with oc.
But yeah, search is your friend. Decide what you want, and you'll find it here.
Thanks for the links.
Yeah well, I spent almost an hour reading about different Roms here and there and I see that it's kinda up to one self what you like about the different Roms. I've been very happy with FroydVillain so far, but I guess I should go ahead and give some of the others a try.
I've just backed up my current phone settings with "Titanium Backup" but is this enough if I decide to try a new Rom and want to go back later on? or should I do a nandroid backup?
And again when I flash over the new recovery.img.. Do I need to backup anything beforehand?
My Froyd version is the latest and I've kept on updating whenever I saw new updates. And yeah, two days is in my opinion not much. Beforehand, on the official 2.1, I could easely tweak 4-5 days out of my standard Hero battery, but I guess this has something to do with the kernel?
Sorry.. I'm really a newbie on this

If you want to go back you need a nandroid backup yes. If your talking about updating your recovery image (lol I'm guessing) no you don't. Just flash it. And the battery has something (everything ) to do with the kernel but if you want better battery set you min freq of your CPU lower or you can lower the max freq.
I see..
Thank you very much for answering.
I have just one minor problem..
How the heck do I flash over the recovery image? Don't I use the FlashRec-thingy? Might have deleted it at some point :S

I reccomend you flashing Amon-RA. There is a guide in his thread on how to flash it But if you want the ultimate easy noob thing you can download ROM manager from the market which will alow you to download and flash a pretty descent recovery in one click
Yeah.. Flashing Amon-RA is what I'm trying to. It seems I have the 1.5.2 version installed and I just downloaded the 1.7.0 one..
The first time I flashed "Amon-RA" did it with the help of a program called FlashRec. I followed the guide on theunlockr.com and I now end up with a message: "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." when I try to "Backup Recovery Image" through that FlashRec program.
I have an idea of how to work around this but I'm not 100% sure this is what's needed..?
Could I run the phone into recovery mode (through that 1.5.2 Amon-RA thingy) and then flash the never version right onto it or is this the wrong procedure?

Lol thats excatly how I rooted my phone too (same recovery and website even) Look in the thread it's described how you flash the new recovery via ADB
Yeah ehm... I'm kinda new to this so all his "code" or whatever it is doesn't give me a hell lot of clues..
Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img

I fixed the steps underlined but after that I kinda went cold on what the **** to do :S
I boot into my recovery and what I get from his "guide" is that I my Hero should do something when I plug in the USB cable.. but nothing happends.. anyone who can put it down in baby-steps for me? :O
There's another way to do this it seems (2nd guide in his thread) but it seems to involve even more "code" so I guess I'll settle with this if it's possible.. :S

For you I would just recommend installing "ROM manager" from the market and then let it install ClockworkMod recovery that should do for you
EDIT: There seems to be an issue with ROM manager at the moment. It wont flash...
Yeah.. Might as well try this out since no one wants to point out on how to it the "geeky"-way
EDIT:
I seem to get an error when trying to flash the ClorkworkMod Recovery.. Any idea why?
Nvm.. Some dude (erasmux) has made an update.zip and uploaded to the Amon-RA post.. it did the trick
I'm a little lost. Let me explain what just happened.
1st 3D was having reboots randomly and BSOD.. so I replaced it.
Picked up new 3D today.
It's Hboot 1.50.000 (oh noez)
I unlock via HTC method
(( Now with HTC's method it's my understanding that you can flash a custom recovery and roms, but you're locked on the Kernel that came with your phone and thus no aosp roms/kernels OR if you're trying to flash a sense rom but the rom has a higher kernel than the one on your phone - you're still up the creek))
After unlocking with HTC's method I promptly went into TWRP, wiped everything without a nand backup because if it screws up i'm using my upgrade lol. I then flashed Eternity 3.0 R39.. to my surprise it worked fine. I didn't test if I could OC.
I then rebooted into recovery through power button and then installed the current miui rom, immediately followed by the Anthrax AOSP kernel.. to my surprise I got no errors of any sort, booted up fast as hell, restored SetCPU and Oc'd to 1.8 just fine.. been going for about 15-20 minutes now just like normal.
I THOUGHT I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS GUYS

I bet you got a refurb that someone previously rooted. If they used revolutionary then you retain S-off even on hboot 1.50 when the refurb facility repaired the device. Why don't you check if you're S-off?
It was S-On. That was the first thing I checked while walking out of the store. S-On 1.50.000
How strange. Hopefully people will keep coming to the thread and ask the right question. With the right question, the right answer will come to shed some light on what is special about your scenario.
Unfortunately that will not be me, because I have hboot 1.4, thus have less knowledge on the HTC unlock method.
Hopefully this has happened to someone else. I'm not sure why it happened. :O

umm i have hboot 1.50 unlocked htc method and i can flash any rom or kernal i want by just booting into recovery through fastboot its an extra step that takes about 10 seconds with a copy and paste of 2 commands from dos prompt
Yeah, I'm not sure why there's this myth that you can't flash kernels with 1.5, just need to load recovery in fastboot. Only limit I know of for 1.5 is that I can't use boot manager (if I'm wrong, let me know because I would love to use it). Either way, doesn't sound like OP was flashing through fastboot, which is odd.

Sounds like after unlocking with htc method you never disconnected your phone from PC and directly booted recovery from fastboot when you flashed TWRP .
So there's nothing new, i guess.
Every hboot1.50 user can flash kernels whether it is sense kernel or AOSP......
You can also use Flash image GUI to flash custom kernels from within the running android environment too.
So far JUST using HTC's unlock method I'm able to do the following
Flash custom roms through recovery like normal
Flash custom kernels through recovery like normal
Perform Nandroid backups/restores of EVERYTHING
UNABLE TO FLASH A CUSTOM SPLASH SCREEN
I thought this was going to be horrible going from a 1.40.000 device to 1.50.000 but honestly it's exactly like when I used Revolutionary to unlock my 1.40.000 device. And yes - I did leave my USB cable hooked up from start to finish. Hopefully other people will see this thread.
I tried Flash GUI and I couldn't get it to work for me so I guess I'm grateful. I'll check if I can install a splash screen once I post this and edit with the update.

You can flash kernels through fastboot. But you stated that you booted into recovery using power button, so it doesn't sound like you used fastboot....
You didn't use the flashimage GUI app, did you?
Sounds strange to me. Did you check the kernel In settings after you flashed? Don't think Its possible for stock kernel to support miui, but I suppose its possible.
Either way, you had something happen that shouldn't have. Either got a kernel to flash in a way that it shouldn't have, or got a rom to run on a kernel that shouldn't be compatible.
Another possible thing....I wonder if the 2.08.651.3 update did something that allows for you to flash kernels now. We know it wasn't possible on the .2 software, has anyone tried it with. 3. Doubt it made a difference as it was supposed to be a security update only.
Who knows. Ill give it a shot tomorrow to see if I can flash kernels without fastboot or flashimage GUI.

If you can flash a splash or radio then you should seek out a dev and let them know. They would probably have you do some tests. Might help achieve s off on 1.50

I tried it but when I booted into miui I got stuck at the boot screen. Miui boots in about 30 seconds or so on a fresh install but I was there for over 10 minutes.
Right now my phone is flashing Eternity 3.0 - R39 followed by Anthrax kernel. I'll let you guys know in a sec.
Edit: Well, the kernel flashed successfully but I'm freezing in the middle of the boot screen. Gonna try another kernel
Okay while booting Eternity 3.0 R39 I froze up mid boot screen. I remembered seeing a post about it freezing and I found it here and did what he said to do and it all works fine now. This is after I flashed rom+kernel in recovery then rebooted.

I'm unable to flash a splash, and I've never flashed a radio before.
But as of right now I can flash kernels/recoveries/roms from TWRP. I'll try flashing a bootscreen with Rom Toolbox real quick just for extra measure.
Edit: can flash custom boot screens. One thing I cant seem to do though is take screenshots with screenshot it. When it saves it's always corrupted and wont let me transfer the screenshot to anything.
From what I gather, the questions you have answered still haven't shed any light as to whether your phone is behaving in a matter that is the same anyone else in your situation would experience? If it is still in fact behaving different than what we would expect it to I think the suggestion given to you to contact a Dev would be best. You may end up and be able to help the community achieve a more comprehensive solution to the root process.

could it be possible htc updated their unlock process to allow access to the boot.img without using fastboot?
ok. so I finally got around to trying to flash a kernel without using fastboot to see if it would work.
It did not. Like others have reported, it will say that the flash is successful, but when I go into the "about phone" menu, it did not change.
I have CM7 (secretpartymeow) on it now with stock (as in whatever kernel came with the ROM) kernel. Tried flashing infected Anthrax (aosp). No luck.
It is indeed looking more and more like your phone is a bit of an anomoly. I would suggest contacting one of the devs over at TeamWin to let them know what you are able to do.
hey, first post. ever. lurked for about a year though. really appreciate all that everybody here does, for free no less. so thank you for that.
so i have an issue.
the micro usb port on my evo3d seems to be broken. like maybe detached from the motherboard? the piece that you normally see in usb ports is there, but i cant charge and i cant connect to my laptop. i could deal with the not being able to charge as i have extra batteries and a seperate charger, but if i cant connect to a computer i cant use fastboot, which i need to use because im using hboot 1.5 s-on.
ill be eligible for an upgrade this coming friday, but id rather hold out for the gs3 and see what thats all about.
so my question is, is there a way to use fastboot over wifi? ive searched a bit but cant really find anything.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you already have root there's an app called flashimg GUI. It can help with flashing recoveries and kernels. I suggest trying it and seeing if it helps with doing whatever it is that you need to achieve.
Sorry for the vague answer but if you add what it is exactly you are trying to do with fastboot it would also be helpful

I can recommend for you to use 4ext Recovery. It lets you flash Kernels and ROM's without Fastboot commands.
fastboot is needed so i can flash roms. hboot1.5 s-on doenst allow me to flash a kernel unless i use fastboot to enter recovery.
ive use flashimage gui before, and last night i was able to use it just as was mentioned before. im fully aware of how to do this, but what im wondering about is this: i really dont like to "dirty" flash (as in not wiping the phone via superwipe or some other tool). so if i flash the kernel with flashimage then enter recovery and use superwipe, will the kernel that i just flashed with flashimage still be there so that i can safely flash the rom that goes with it and have no issues?
regarding touch recovery with smartflash, i should have installed this weeks ago, but cwm has never given me an issue since i rooted this phone in november. if i were using touch recovery none of this would be an issue. but the fact remains that i need be able to connect to a computer in order to initially flash the new recovery. right? im asking really, because thats how i understand the process but im not 100% sure.
again, thanks for the input guys. any help is appreciated.

First of all. If you use Flash Image GUI the Kernel will remain there even with a superwipe. and second i recommend 4ext, you don't need a PC to install the new recovery. Just download it from HERE, install it as a normal apk and you are ready to go. Just make sure when the app asks if you are S-ON select yes. Don't forget to download latest version.
just wondering, is the connector loose?
If you open it up and look with magnification, can you see the solder connections separated?
I'm just thinking that with a very thin soldering iron, magnification and a little skill, you can probably repair the connector.
I would at least take the phone apart and give it a good look and see if its possible to fix.
excellent. thanks for the quick response. im gonna dl the ext4 and give it a shot later. ill report back, but im sure the results are predictable (that it will work). also good to know about the figui/kernel/superwipe situation. that info could also come in usefull.
im not new to this, as i used to own a samsung moment and the only to make that thing usable was to root it. but there are just certain things that im not 100% on (or even 50% really, the work these devs do is amazing to me). so i really appreciate the help. hopefully this will keep me going for a few months.

i thought about doing that, as i know my way around a soldering iron, but im really trying to avoid doing that, just because of the potential to screw the phone up completely.
to answer you question though, yeah, it is loose. the usb plug moves way too freely in there, and if i mess with it long enough i can get the red light for a split second, but it wont stay. so that tells me its loose. and ive found others on google with the same exact issue. i guess it was a common problem with these phones, but ive had the thing since launch day so i would have expected this to happen sooner.

No problem man. Remember that even the most experienced player may need help sometimes. Also i recommend to fix the USB, maybe a bad flash. Who knows...

i thought about that, so i used flashimage and dirty-flashed a different rom. still no charge or connect capability.
So i would like to apologize first off by saying i am a complete and total noob in every sense of the word. This is the first time trying to root any phone. ok so heres the deal, the phone powers up... FINALLY... and will load to the homescreen but reboots the device. I used the BAMF ICS rom and put in a PGIMGnewfirmwarepeople.zip... ive tried to do the *#*# but as soon as i bring it up i can only get maybe the * or at best the *# but then it reboots itself. I mess with cars on a daily basis but unlike a car part i cant bang or heat up the phone to get the desired result. i attempted to do this since i saw the video on the rezound redifined 4.0.3 ICS with nova launcher.. it was a video by driodzero?
i have no idea where to go from here... i would greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide
If it is indeed a network bootloop, try booting with the backpate removed. As long as the network signal isn't overly strong it should be able to get you in.
i think that was one of the things i did... i tried to let it boot with the back off, then with the back off and SIM card out... but to no avail. is there a way to somehow cmd prompt the *#*# in order to switch the problem... i dont know if this helps but it is S-ON
No SIM means no signal, which means no network bootloop. Must be another cause. Looking at the Bamf ICS thread, did you upgrade your firmware to ICS properly first. Hmm.
i will go back and look.. the problem is it will not let be go back and down grade img file...

Yeah, S-off is suggested eventually since it allows you to downgrade from the leaks. Risk of perma-brick in certain situations, like flashing a bad download of radios. But it helps more than hurts to have that freedom.
On S-on you also need to make sure the boot.img gets flashed seperate in the bootloader for a given ROM.
thanx i will try the wire trick to get it to S-OFF but right now i cant even get the phone to power up to the home screen
You can check the hboot/radio version in the bootloader to confirm firmware version. See what it says there.
Would attempt a clean reinstall of the ROM if it is indeed on ICS (hboot 2.21 or 2.25) firmware proper.
Then make sure to wipe system, davik-cache and cache, flash ROM twice, the patch Joelz has, and flash the boot.img as a PH98IMG.zip in bootloader. Then boot the ROM up.
i would definitely try that except i can not get it to power on, nor can i get it to charge... i think its bricked, since ive even gone to the standard battery as well as using different chargers. i greatly appreciate your insight

Did you use ClockworkMod by any chance? My first Rezzy charging capability fried on its own eventually, but aside from hardware failure: that recovery has been reported to have issues when battery drains down...
I have the HTC One X Plus International and recently recovered from it only being able to go into Bootloader Mode because of the System being erased without a backup. I finally was able to learn how to find the correct RUU for my make and model to bring it back to life. Before accomplishing this, this current problem still existed.
Each time now when I boot-up, it starts perfectly well, no problem. But when I try going into Bootloader Mode and choose Recovery, it shuts itself down. So, since I am unable to Root it, or at least I don't know how to do so under these circumstances, how do I get around this obstacle? Thanks.

I don't know if this is too obvious.. but have you flashed the recovery again??
When you run the RUU, it is overwritten. You need to download a recovery and flash it through fastboot:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Actually, around six or seven times now, with no luck. Now when attempting to get into Recovery, it hangs on the white screen. The thing is, I successfully had TWRP 2.5.0.0 on it. (Long story.) I am now trying to figure out how to root it through Fastboot, if that's even possible. Otherwise, I am out of ideas.
Through trial-and-error, I finally was able to get it rooted. However, no matter how many times I try flashing TWRP-Touch (various versions), it maintains its inability to boot into Recovery Mode. Go figure.
I use twrp venom without any issues, maybe try that one?

When you were hanging on the white screen, did it say anything on the screen?
I can't recite it exactly, HTC, something. But know that it is the first screen you would see upon rebooting.

Hey 00mpollard, I just wanted to thank you for both recommending a working Recovery IMG (that works great) for my HTC One+, and as well as introducing me to the corresponding Viper One X+ ROM, that I also decided to install, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks again.
No problem, glad i could help!
I love Viper rom, very stable & lots of customizations Can't go wrong!

I was just curious because if it said something about waiting on SD card or SDdata, something along those lines, I get that issue when the phone is plugged in. Unplugging the cable allowed me to enter hboot with no issues.
