Screen turns on when receiving SMS - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Everytime I receive a SMS message my screen turns on for about 3 seconds then shuts off. I need this disabled ASAP, so annoying! I thought I saw this mentioned somewhere but when I searched it I didnt find anything for the SGS3.

Same here I couldn't find anything in settings

Man I hate it. Even if the phone is on silent the screen still turns on. Keeps waking me up and worst of all my gf. Shes gonna throw my phone out the window!!!

I would love to see a way to turn this off

Only way I seen was to use third party sms app. Hand cent or go sms both work and keeps screen off after you set it up that way.

Yea Handcent fixed it for me & I like Handcent better anyway.

That's more of a work around rather than a solution. There's got to be a fix for this. Someone else posted about this in the general section.

Sorry if this is in a post already, I searched but didn't find anything the same.
I use the stock android messing setup, and on 1.6, when I sent a message with little service, I could leave it and it would keep trying till it sent. Now on 2.1, I find that if service is an issue, it will notify me right away that it didn't go through, and I'll need to hit resend. Any way to change this to the old way, so I don't have to keep bothering with it?
Thanks

No one else has this happening?
I've had this happen and had to manually resend the message. Not sure if there is a solution to it
I've had this happen too. Doesn't bother me too much, I just hard press the message and resend it again. My issue is the darned the new way to add recipients. I can't just type their names and the phone automatically recognizes them like with the old firmware. Annoying when I have to send multiple texts.
true say .
Im having this issue as well. And started a similar thread. Shouldnt have now that I found this one Lol...
But did not find solution thus far. But I noticed the phone always goes into H from 3G. I think this could have something to do with it because I know the phone sends them when in H mode rather than 3G.
That or I am just paranoid.
Hmm I have a different problem, whenever i come down to 20 characters left in the SMS, it starts lagging really bad, and sometimes it just closes :S

[Q] [REQ] App to compensate for lack of LED notification light?

Hi guys
Im finding it a bit of a pain that theres no LED light on an otherwise awesome phone. If my phone is in another room or on silent I have to keep picking it up and unlocking the screen to see if Ive missed any calls or texts.
What I propose is an app that will make the phone beep and or vibrate at a certain timed interval whenever you have missed calls or texts.
My mum's old Motorolla RAZR does this (lol) so I dont see why this option hasnt been included on the SII.
I cant find any mention of an existing app that does this, but if there is one, please accept my apologies and point me in the right direction.
Cheers
Skola
i use MineMessagevibrator on the market

I'm not sure it's a problem with your phone, I think it's meant to do that . I don't know if there's a mod out there to stop it though...
It's definitely meant to do that
damn then i have to hope that a mod will be released
Turn the phone off?
I think you should request a dev to do that as I think it will never be made as your phone should really do that. I'm not sure if there's even a phone which will not turn on its screen when a sms is received.

Coming from htc phones all this while..this screen turning on when recieving sms/mms/email is really annoying..hopefully someone can cook something to totally prevent this. I guess samsung designed it thia way due to lack of notification led.

on my nexus one, the screen will not turn on when an sms is received. but i can turn this option on if i want so that the screen DOES turn on with an sms. its all about choice. maybe you guys could try handcent, and root and remove the stock messaging app to stop this.
i've just noticed that my phone has started doing this too.
i have sms popup installed and the default sms notification is turned off therefore sms popup should handle the sms notifications.
i have "leave the screen switched off" set in sms popup but the screen still turns on.
this is also happening with the exchange client and i think it might have started since KE7 ...
any ideas ?

how do i stop my phone from vibrating when receiving a text message?

ok i been seaching threw my phone for about an hour now and can not for the life of me figure out how to stop my phone from vibrating when getting a text.. all i want it to do is make a sound and it makes a sound to vibrates??
Open the messaging app and then go to settings for the app? It should give you the option for a notification sound and also to never vibrate. I think.

Accidental calls to 911

The touch of HTC One is so wrongly caliberated that touching anywhere on the screen answers the call (results in unwilling answer of calls when taking the phone out of pocket) or the emergency number 911 gets dialled from lock screen when the phone is in pocket...
Just now I got a call from the Sheriff's department about a 911 call made from my phone
Been using since it came out and has never happened to me. I'm going with user error on this one.

Never has happened to me. This is obviously user error. What a waste of a thread.

i can actually attest that this can happen cause it happened to me as well with my HTC One. I got a random call from the police department that my phone dialed the emergency number, all while my phone was in my back pants pocket
Definitely not a stupid thread. My friend has had a one for a few weeks now, and he keeps on complaining about how often he calls 911 from his pocket...
Maybe try disabling apps that causes the screen to turn on like some notifications. If it still occurs, try showing it to an AT&T rep. They should replace it.

I did it 5 times in one day. I used to have no lock screen with just a password but now I have both and almost all notifications that turn the screen on are disabled. So far so good.

If you have nothing to add, then why bother to reply. Seems a waste of time for you, since you have such important things to attend to. Since you think personal attacks are ok, how about you go back down into moms basement and clean up you room, mmkay?
This has never been an issue with any other phone I've owned, but it's happened twice to me now. I couldn't care less, and I don't consider it user error.

Even if that was actually a personal attack that doesn't make it okay for you to do it

I feel your pain, OP. Although I haven't had this issue with my One yet, I've dialed 911 from my pocket twice so far with my Galaxy S4. I turned off the "increase screen sensitivity" option, so hopefully it doesn't happen again. Either way, I think I'm just somehow bumping the "emergency dialer" thing from inside my pocket with the pattern lock set-up. Maybe you're inadvertently doing the same.
Ironically enough, a few minutes after being reprimanded by them for my latest 911 pocket call, 911 accidentally returned the favor and dialed my number by mistake
Yes this happened a few times to me using the stock ROM 4.1, however this issue can be resolved several ways (this list is NOT all inclusive):
tbalden's kernal has the following:
Pocket Wake Protection (prevents phone from waking accidentally in your pocket, when it contacts skin through textile)
A new lock screen (Halo Locker, Holo Locker)
A new ROM, Google edition is harder to get to actually dialing 911.
Also noticed on the stock kernal and ROM the hotter the phone got in my pocket the easier it was to dial 911.....and this article was pretty funny.

This isn't a support group, making a thread like this won't solve anything for you chief

Solved by doing the following :
Disable screen lock by selecting none from settings > security > screen lock
Select no lock screen from settings > personalize > lock screen style
Install Magiclocker main from app store abd enable pattern or pin in it for security lock screen
I don't even know how to call 911 from the lock screen without unlocking, so I doubt my pocket knows (unless it's smarter than me ). Can someone tell me how?

3rd party lock screen apps tend to drain a lot battery.

I use WidgetLocker so I haven't had a problem with accidentally calling 911. I do hate the incoming call screens, though, and have accidentally answered more than a few calls I did not want to take. The screen with the regular buttons on the bottom is fine but the one with the sliders is horrible. I can hit decline and it'll still answer. :-\ also, like you said, just taking it out of my pocket will answer the call. I tried ultimate call screen but it didn't always work well for me.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.nanabit.callconfirm&hl=en - This will help with outgoing calls.
As for incoming calls, I also use Widgetlocker and it can display when a call comes in (you have to unlock to answer).
It happened to me...and Police Dept. called me...This is definitely not a good thing...How can we avoid ?
