ive had my s3 for 3 weeks now, its been rooted but still running stock rom. today i experienced a reboot when i received a text message and this is the third time, each time prior to the device rebooting it vibrates for a long time i.e maybe 5 seconds instead of 2 secs, has anyone had anything similar happen to them? or is my device faulty?
Never rebooted .
I would return to stock see what happens .
jje
Nope. Nothing like that has ever happened to mine.
Never rebooted using system Apps but plenty times with others, and that's the developer's fault not Samsung's.
I wonder if a third party app may be causing it? It only reboots randomly on a incoming message. I usually know it's going to reboot due to the long vibration.

Yeah have you installed any other Apps that can send or monitor received SMS?
Mine rebooted a couple of times in the first few days of use. (unrooted stock ROM)
Never had any since though.
My friend got an S3 2 days ago and he told me he's been experiencing random reboots !!! His phone is on stock rom and ain't rooted yet !!!

Only whatsapp, but I doubt that is causing it. I've cleared data in applications for the messaging app, so going to see if that helps, thanks for the replies, at least IM not the only one having issues, I read on another thread someone having similar issues when using the phone and a SMS arrived, his phone would freeze.
People that are not experience reboots are you using custom roms, and if so which do you recommend? If I have to send it back to Samsung, will flashing stock ROM and using triangle away prior to flashing ROM be enough to get warranty back again?

That means there's an App flashing something to Root and rebooting your phone, it happened to me with a cracked version of Rom toolbox pro so I uninstalled, and I'm not sure but that might add to your flash counter every time so you want to find out what's causing it.
Nope, mines been fine, even undervolted.
Ok I finally figured it out, it was nova launcher causing the freezes, using touchwiz no freezes when sms arrive.

Really? Nova is all I use on mine. Have never had a problem.

I have had the long vibration then a reboot a few times, had my phone a few weeks too, rooted and running different roms, only been happening the last few days.
I have a flash count of 9, so nothing too heavy.
Unrooted and went back to stock and then rerooted and installed villainrom.
Just had my first reboot about 5 mins in.
Anyone know what causes this any way to fix it for good

I thought it was related to root but I've had these hot reboots even before rooting so it's not just root. Most likely an app.

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.

Mine happened again. I've now uninstalled BetterBatteryStats. I'm going to start uninstalling stuff that uses root to roll that out. I've had these issues on stock but it happened rarely, lately it's been happening very frequently so something is going on.

Well I'm tired of the random hot reboots! Some people say it happened to them before rooting, but I don't believe it happened to me until I rooted and installed CWM touch......so I'm going back to stock to start all over again so I can try to narrow down the issue. I'll report back on my progress as it becomes available.

Happening often to me. The search continues. I've now uninstalled adfree. I'm positive this is an app since I had it occur on stock after two weeks of using the phone and installing crap.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.
I have been getting allot of random reboots, not while actually using the device but when it is just sitting there, on charger and off anyone have any experience with this?
Are these full reboots, with the LG and AT&T boot animations, or is it just the UI reloading? I havent ran into this at all on this phone. However, i have had an issue with the UI reloading with every Samsung device Ive ever had. Not sure what causes it or if your experiencing the same thing.
They are full reboots I normally catch it on the LG logo,I guess if no one else has come across it I'll go swap the phone out for another. Though my LG g2x had reboots till we had custom roms....

I went and exchanged my phone today for another, so we will see if that helps it. I am not sure though because I had a LG G2X and it had random reboots as well, it was only fixed with custom roms and kernels later so assuming we get unlocked bootloaders I am sure that will be fixed but till then I am not sure if I am going to keep this phone or not....

Your talking about "redraws" it has to do with the launcher (TouchWiz) or in some cases, RAM.

Where as I do not use the stock launcher, I use NOVA and well we have 2 gigs of ram... Plus mine have certainly been full reboots and the G2x did this same thing... we need to just hope for am unlockedbootloader.

I've had reboots as well. Around 4 times now and purchased the phone nov. 3. a couple times it was when the phone is just sitting there on stand by. one time it was while posting a picture on instagram. Another was taking a picture and looking at the photos... and when it does re start, it will restart 2 or 3 times at a time, like i see the lg logo 3 times, then finally the "rethink possible" logo, then the phone boots up and while or just after my media scanning of my sdcard finishes, it will automatically restart again... and this happens 2 or 3 times. for some reason I feel like it has something to do with me 64gb sd card but am not sure, i used to think it had something to do with eco mode but phone has restarted while it wasnt activated too... dunno how to fix, hopefully an update will come for a fix :/

I'm going to have to send mine in for warranty too, put a reboot logger on it and it's around 4-5 times per day. I should probably unroot it before I send it in I guess.
So I've only had my Lumia for 5 days but from day one it's been randomly freezing no matter what I'm doing, be it texting, web surfing, anything. I downloaded the software update and the problem persists. It happens several times per day and I have to soft reset which erases some of my settings, its totally annoying. Is there a fix for this or do I have a defective device?
Try a hard reset which unfortunately will wipe everything from your phone back to factory settings, If problem still persists then you definitely have a faulty device and should return it.
Set your highest data setting to 3G. This will disable LTE but for me it seems to solve the problem. Let me know if this works for you.

If you have a sim card that does not support LTE then yes it is a fix. However. I have also installed the portico update, 4G disabled and the phone went from never rebooting or freezing to reboot 2-3 times a day and at least 1 freeze.
Hello all, this is my first technical question at xda. I usually don't have problems as i never dirty flash and generally use caution when doing things.
My i605 randomly shut off today and was unresponsive. After a few battery pulls i was able to boot it back up. The phone would not call or text, even though the signal bars showed normal. Right away i flashed a new ROM after 3 full wipes and the dalvik cache wiped. The phone activated on my number right away and showed normal signal, but won't call or text. I updated the modem to the latest 5/3, still no luck. Suspecting it was my SIM card, i tried it in another device and the SIM works fine. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or anything i should try before reverting to completely stock?
Thanks everyone!

I put my wife's Sim in today. Same problem. It has started receiving text messages but will not send them or call. Data still works as well. Is there anything further I can do besides updating the radios to try and fix this issue? Obviously something is working if it can receive messages.

What were you doing when the phone locked up on you?
Did you notice any over heating, screen problems, lag. ETC.
What kind of case if any do you have on your NOTE 2.
What were atmospheric conditions (as this may have trapped moisture inside affecting the antenna)

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary really. No case, and i never keep my phone with me if moisture is around. (rain, sweat, etc.) My phone was on when i was driving to work, when i arrived it was off and unresponsive for a few minutes. I've only experienced maybe 2 or 3 reboots since I've had the phone, pretty much since launch.
I hadn't updated the radio/modem ever though. I don't know if this had anything to do with it.

I'm glad that everything is working for you on the replacement. If I were you I wouldn't wait to unlock though. Sammy is pushing an update, at least thru the VZW computer app, that may block our current boot loader exploit and may make it un-unlockable.
