Faulty power button, cant start up - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have a galaxy s2 with a broken power button. The flex cable is snapped so cant start the phone up.
Does anyone know of a way to start the phone up?
Also is there a way to assign for example the home key for startup?

There is possibility to use usb to wake up the phone like usb jig. When my phone had problems with usb port jig was waking it up to recovery, where you got possibility to reboot phone to start normally. So its all about finding good resistancy of "boot jig" (lets call it this way ) and to make it. Just my free thoughts... maybe there is other way, but I never heard about it .

[Q] USB Jig

Hey guys n gals, just bought a USB Jig from Ebay, but it doesnt mention anything about resetting the flash counter..
Will a USB Jig automatically reset it, or is it something else that is added, and do I need to buy a USB Jig + Counter reset, or something to this effect?
Edit: Also, is there a way to view the actual count? I found something in a post about USB Jigs, but the video with all the info has disappeared from youtube...
Regards
Jamie
The jig will reset the counter. If you want to see what the count is turn phone off, press vol down power and home button at once. This should get you to download mode where you can see the counter.
To use the jig make sure phone is off. Then plug in jig. This will also take you to download mode but at the same time reset the counter showing you being on official samsung firmware. Hope this helps

Works a treat!

Is anyone having the battery with question mark problem?

I may have just thought of something. Just need to know if there's anyone that's able and willing to try it out.
Well if anyone reads this, can you get the usb prompt by holding volume up and power?
Cant get to USB mode. It just powers up with the battery and question mark, If you power up with unit plugged it you get a flashing home button.
Cant get anything to work

You cannot go into USB mode with a flat battery make sure its charged up first, plug in the charger or put on the touchstone and leave to charge overnight do not turn on until charged then to put into USB mode unplug the cable then power +volume up when USB symbol shows then plug in the USB cable

This is a know problem with all WebOS products. I experienced it with my old Palm Pre Plus. The only solution I know of is to replace the battery.

Soft brick and no USB connectivity

I managed to soft brick my wife's Vibrant while trying to put it back to stock ROM: basically I get the "Phone -- Yellow exclmation -- PC". The volume up, down and power combo doesn't work.
In addition, to make things worse, if I plug it into the PC it gets power but the PC doesn't recognize the USB, so I can't use any type of soft unbrick software.
Should I give a try to the USB jig to get into download mode or, do you guys think the USB port is faulty... I know it's kind of hard to know, but I'm primarily curious to see if anyone got in a similar situation with soft brick and no USB connectivity and was able to solve it with the jig...
Thanks!!!!

I'm not sure ajig would help you but its good to have ajig laying around just in case things go bad. The jig will get you into download mode but if your usb cable/usb port is bad then you still can't connect to your pc to use odin. Sounds like you need a new usb cable or you need to clean your usb port. Have you tried cleaning your phones usb port with isopropyl alcohol and a Qtip? We had a member fix his phone this way just yesterday. If that doesn't work and a tmobile usb cable doesn't work then you might have a faulty usb port. Tmobile has a 30 day money back guarantee on the usb cable so try that if you haven't already. If you end up exhausting all options then I recommend www.mobiletechvideos.com to replace your usb port, plenty of folks have had success with them in the past. Just so you know, the only usb cable that works for me is the one from the tmobile store. I'm not sure why but I have three other cables that work fine on my friends vibrant but dont even do anything at all when plugged in to my phone (not even charge). Let us know what ends up being the fix, good luck.

I gave it a try and cleaned out the USB port with some electronic contact cleaner, but that didn't help. I've also tried 4 cables and 2 PC with no differences.
I'll try out the JIG and see if that fixes it if not I'll decide what to do:quite frankly I would unbrick it and bring it back to the stock firmware just to turn around and put it on eBay, so I'm not quite sure it's worth the effort... But since I've already ordered the JIG I'll give that one a try...
Good luck. I suggest you mod your phone like mobile tech videos (tried acronyming it to MTV but you know) did to make it unbrickable.

If you happen to have Amazon Prime, you can get a jig from Amazon in your hands with next day delivery for $8 (3.99 for the jig and 3.99 for the delivery).
Now that said, if you happend to have flashed the GB bootloader at some point, rememer that the download mode is now accessed by the volume up, instead of both up and down. It's definitely worth giving this a try:
- take out the battery
- plug in the usb to the phone and your PC
- hold the power up button and insert the battery. It should go right into download mode
I actually did have a GB room installed... I'll give it a try tonight: thanks for the heads up!!!!
Just noticed that you said you already ordered the jig so NM about the amazon suggestion. I've been in the situation with the exclamation point and thought mine was bricked. I ordered the jig on Amazon and then finally tried what I detailed above and got in download mode. I could not get in DL mode no matter what else I tried, including just powering up with USB attached and volume up held. I had to do it with the battery being inserted with volume up.
Good luck and remember, the jig may work for the phone, but flowers usually work for the wife.
It was indeed the wrong combo to get it into download mode: using the volume up only and it went right in. The USB connectivity is also solved.
After some back and forth I was able to get CM 7.2 loaded and it works perfectly. Now I just need to solve the dreaded GPS issues of this phone: tonight I'll take it apart and see if bending the antenna connector solves it. It is a August 2010 production so it might as well be.
Other than that CM7.2 works pretty damn good. I already have it on my N1 with no issues. The Vibrant is very much snappier now, particularly if you crank it over to 1.3GHz.
Again thanks a lot for all the help!!!!
A friend had the same problem where it wouldn't go into download mode and would just stay at the phone ! computer screen. It would auto turn on when plugged into usb to this screen so that gave me little hope. What I ended up doing was holding all three buttons and when it turned black let go off power but kept volumes held, it would load back to the exclamation screen and I would hold the power button again, it cycled like this 3 or 4 times, but eventually went back to the download mode and I was able to restore with Odin.

[Q] Please Help n00b s2 hardware issue maybe?

I've just received a cracked s2 gt-i9100 the screen was cracked and didn't show an image but still the buttons lit up and the phone vibrated on touch i ordered a new screen and set about replacing it unfortunately upon doing so I snapped the power button ribbon cable so i'm unable to power up the g2 till the new one arrives, when i plug my phone into my laptop the screen turns on and shows a battery charging however the laptop keeps saying unknown device... I've tried different cables and a different laptop not sure if i could of damaged the usb or if it might be that there is no power button ribbon connected?!
Would really love any help? like maybe there is a way to turn the phone on without the power button for the moment?

I don't think the power ribbon cable have anything to do with the phone not being recognized by the computer, but everything is possible. Are you sure you didn't mess up anything inside the phone, when replacing the screen?

Power Button and Micro USB Problems

I just got this old phone from my friend after he upgraded. It's a solid phone but I'm having 2 issues.
1. The power button doesn't have the nice clicking feel to it. I opened the phone up and discovered the power button was one that I have not seen before. Is this button soldered onto the board? I would like to replace it myself, I have tried looking up power button fixes but was not able to find any results with this particular button type. It's usually the ribbon cable type deal with the flat disk contact kinda deal. Any idea where I can find some instructions and the buttons themselves?
2. I have a problem with the phone not powering down. After shutting the phone down the phone boots right back up or the screen shows the charging animation. Also the screen never goes into sleep mode it only goes into the dim mode. I looked up this problem and it seems to be a common one, a problem with the micro usb slot. I ordered the whole usb slot and the board its attached to. My question for this one is how difficult is the install?

I just replaced the screen one of my i777's. I followed this great guide my LE55ONS on YouTube. It was for I i9100, but they are almost the same phone. Along the way in the video he explains how to replace everything in the phone, including the microUSB board and flex cable, which if i remember was a pretty easy fix. As for the power button, i would try maybe putting a little piece of paper or cardboard or foam or something inside the phone right next to the button, that might make it more ferm when pushed.
Hope this helped.

Thanks for the reply, yes I saw the video too, it was helpful but that dang power button is so mushy it feels horrible. A little update though I was able to fix the micro usb port by cleaning it with a brush then bending the pins towards the screen, it appears that over time the row of pins gets pushed too far down and shorts the assembly. Power problems fixed but not the power button. Only place I can find that even has the power button repair service is mobiletechvideos

You might want to check the forums for your device, as the hardware between the I777 and the T898 are very different.
