[Q] Creating your own wallpaper - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, so I've recently been spending a fair amount of time in photoshop creating my own wallpapers however whenever I transfer them across to my Galaxy S II and try and set them (through wallpaper > gallery) I always get that cropping box which crops out almost all of the wallpaper I made. How do I set a wallpaper without it being cropped like that, or if it's going to be cropped how do I solve the problem so I don't get 20% of the wallpaper I made, I tried a few thing like increasing the canvas side whilst leaving the image at the same res but it hasn't worked. Help would be great.
Thanks.

How to get wallpapers to work properly

Searched through a couple of threads on getting the wallpapers to show up properly but wasn't able to find a definite solution and after spending a couple hours trying to figure it out here it is:
This will allow the wallpaper to span all 5 screens of ADW launcher (or any other launcher I would imagine) without pixelating or distorting.
Create a background that is 1200x1024 and in PNG format (I used PNG 24bit since that is what the stock wallpapers are at) and put the picture in the My Files\Wallpapers folder on your device memory.
Go to the Nook settings>Home>Set Wallpaper and select the wallpaper you want to use form the "Wallpaper" tab and not the "Photo Gallery" tab.
After applying the wallpaper go back to the home screen and you will have a nice clean background that spans all screens and isn't distorted.
This was starting to annoy me enough to post about a possible solution. I will do this as soon as I get off work.
Thanks!

I found this in another thread: you can also get a market app called Wallpaper Set and Save. It also sets your wallpaper of choice in the proper resolution.

I tried the Wallpaper Set and Save app but found that it still enlarged the image and cut off the top and bottom somewhat.
resizing them to 1200x1024 and saving them in .png did the trick
although this one is not 1200x1024 (the original isnt either) here's a default wallpaper for contrarians

The default wallpapers are 840x1024, but they aren't big enough to fill the multiple screens of ADW
What I did was turn the nook horizontally and set the wallpaper. Make sure you don't turn it over until the wallpaper is set. Once the wallpaper is set you can turn it back vertically and it should come out ok. This was the only way I could get the wallpaper to not be zoomed in.

Yeah, it does cut it off some, but not a big deal to me... the resolution is great, and it doesn't require photo resizing on a desktop. Depends how particular each person is about getting every inch of the image (I'd imagine this app would suffice for many).
I use Flikie Wallpapers HD which is free in the app store. Has many different types of wallpaper and they fit the screen perfectly regardless of if you're using one screen or seven screens.
Flickie wallpaper HD worked perfectly for me. I have been looking for an app like this. Thanks!
I got another solution.
But this only work with one wallpaper.
go to system/framework/
Look for framework_res.apk
Then use 7z to edit it.
Replace the default_wallpaper.png you'll get a better quality wallpaper.

Your not missing anything my friend. You are using a different OS than the OP. He sounds like he's still running stock, where as you have CM7. There are no "Nook Settings" in CM7.

About Wallpapers...

Ok I been up and down these and other forums for a few days. I registered here a while back but never posted because I had no problems... But I searched... came close but no cigar. I downloaded Numerous wallpaper apps and played around with different ratios, But no matter what I do I always find myself forced to crop the background (if it doesn't crop it zooms the hell out of the picture). I'm I missing something I'm on a completely stock rooted 2.2... I'm at my wits end with this, so close to just saying screw it and finding a decent LWP... anyone care to lend a helping hand?
Edit* Most of the stuff I find applies to portrait mode.. I use Landscape mode 99% of the time
in landscape the resolution should be 960x480
in portrait 960x800
Umm...no.
Wallpaper images, regardless of orientation need to be 960x800 in order to maintain the sharpest image possible. See my post here.
The attached file is a grid 960x800, which is the recommended size for a wallpaper in android. That is 2 times the width by the height of the phone screen.
Make this the wallpaper on your phone and test it out. you should be able to use the entire image as your wallpaper. Make sure you have auto-rotate on and that your home app is scrolling the wallpaper. If you use a home app that allows you to change the number of homescreens you will see that how much of the image is scrolled changes with the number of screens.
If you use auto-rotation you will be able to see exactly what part of an image can be seen with the phone in each orientation. This is the problem when creating wallpapers, particularly ones with content (kids, a car, etc.) that you want visible in either orientation.
I keep so many icons on my homescreens that mot of the wallpaper is covered so I use a simple wallpaper. If you want the wallpaper to be more visible and make a statement about you or your phone you have to consider many factors. The release version of the Streak with Android 1.6 was customized to allow a different wallpaper on each screen, to get that effect now you have to use an app.
MultiPicture Wallpaper
StreakSet Wallper app
WallStreak - it's buried in the thread
960x800 wallpaper gallery
So - there is no simple answer. Let us know what ends up working for you.
Edit: I like to edit my wallpaper images on my PC making sure that the image is a multiple of 960x800 (to preserve the aspect ratio) and the resize to 960x480 before copying to the phone. The gallery app will allow you to select an entire 960x800 image.
Edit2: Your home app may handle the wallpaper differently than stock or other phone apps, so test on your specific setup.
Marvin... that grid line you provided seems to be helping ALOT. It fits landscape without a problem now I can plot exact grid points... I'll do a quick run to see how it looks. If I am content I will post results but if not I will get some rest. its 2:30 lol... but thanks alot, all of you.
Def. happy with how this came out, that image wasn't the proper dimensions so I edited it (not by much) now all I have to do is line it up on a fresh canvas and boom... thanks again. def solved my problems

Glad the info helped. If you have a 960x800 version of that wallpaper allpaper attach it to a post and I will add it to the wallpaper gallery I keep.
yes i meant that in landscape only 960x480 is shown but the wallpaper is 960x800

''setting wallpaper'' issue solved alternatively

Hi guys,
I guess everyone is having problem, setting their favourite wallpapers on honeycomb. Because whenever we try to set wallpaper, it asks for cropping and after applying cropped wallpaper becomes blurred [like it zommed in the wallpaper]......
some people said to use wallpaper wizardrii app but honestly it didnt help me at all....it still crops the picture and sometimes make it blurred.
so my solution to set desired wallpaper without cropping is very very simple but as i said this is just an alternative not the perfect solution.
just download live wallpaper called ''WATERIZE LIVE WALLPAPER '' , install it and then open it. By default it will have stones background. Go to settings and choose custom background of yourchoice. Apply it. Thats it. Now you have wallpaper of your choice without cropping. Its so easy and plus it adds the effect of water ripples on your wallpaper which looks so cool. Try out.
this is my alternative way to set background without cropping but little sacrifice is its live wallpaper but i would really love to use this until google solve this issue on honeycomb.
i have provided the link for download.
if anyone likes this then please comment
And i see, you must use the full version to get the option custom image.
Use Wallpaper Wizardii from the market
'Wallpaper for Tablets' in the market solves the problem as well.
Also, 'MultiPicture Live Wallpaper'
Both are free, and allow you to perfect you wallpaper on the tab.
+1 for multi live wallpaper
+1 Wallpaper for Tablet. Works great. No more crop

What is the exact wallpaper size if using wallpaper for tablet? 1280 x 800 ?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
The problem is that using these programs you apply a live wallpaper like a static wallepaper ...... and that this decreases the speed of toucwiz.
I think 1920x1408 resolution is best for our honeycomb tablets. But this multi live wallpaper software make the images fit to screen so u dont need to worry. Otherwise for perfect size try the above resolution....i will upload some wallpaper collection when i m free.
---------- Post added at 01:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:17 AM ----------
thanks to refer me this amazing software. I installed it long ago but at that time i was new to honeycomb so didnt notice the setting menu of multi live wallpaper but now i installed again and looked into the setttings and when i applied. ...i found that this software is ****in awesome. I love the way it has difffernt wallpaers on each screen and specially the screen transition effect is glorious.
One question though, being a live wallpaper and changing wallpaper on time intervals itself, do u think it will consume more ram and subsequently battery?
I wish it just use battery like a static wallpaper.
Another app that I used previously (although it was on my phone and not on my tablet) was "Wallpaper Set and Save".
Wallpaperwizadrrii and multipicture all compress the picture and degrade the quality.
I have yet to see a solution that maintains quality AND doesnt crop.

That's incorrect.
As I said in another thread, when using a stock Honeycomb ROM and/or ADW the standard rules of Android wallpaper sizing apply.
You take the screen resolution in portrait and double the width and that's the size the wallpaper should be to fit perfectly. Obviously you can scale up or down from there if you really want to but the ratio will stay the same.
There is a question-mark as to whether TouchWiz changes the way wallpapers are selected/size but since I really don't like TouchWiz, I haven't investigated.
Free!! Multi-live wallpaper..try it!!!
The BEST solution and a little more OPTIONS is MULTI-LIVE WALLPAPER..It looks Semi-Challenging to use but it really isn't..It allows you to set each screen with a specific wallpaper or you can have it cycle to different ones throughout your wallpaper folder..I have it set so that it cycles thru as I change Home screens..Don't let the Name fool you..It is IMO the BEST ONE OUT..Try it and see for yourself..You can also set it to FILL your SCREEN!!!Also the screen TRANSITIONS are AWESOME..And its 100% FREE!!!!

You just need to size it up in the manner I laid out in the thread I linked-to.

[Q] Wallpaper Settings Anywhere On Prime?

Is there a setting somewhere, anywhere that would allow the actual wallpaper to be used instead of cropping it or automatically zooming in on the image??
This is driving me crazy...:silly:
I tried Wallpaper Wizardrii, QuickPics, PicSpeed and they all seem to enlarge the wallpaper to an either blocky, pixelated mess or zoom in too much and cut half of the image out.
I also tried making wallpapers in Photoshop the exact size as the stock Asus wallpapers but they still end up zoomed in or cropped...
Even the stock wallpapers are enlarged...
Could it be the ROM (AOKP) or something??
I've never had an issue like this before and I'm pretty sure that when my Prime was brand new the stock wallpapers weren't enlarging like they are now...I remember they were perfectly sized to fit the screen...
I've been through many threads and forums and Google searches but I can't seem to fix this.
Any/all help is appreciated.

yeah that's how I am doing it...I go into the gallery, choose the image I wanna use then select PicSpeed and it opens up, gives me the choice to rotate or crop the image in 3 different styles or "use original"...I still get the zommed/cropped image as the end result.
maybe I'll uninstall then re-install it (PicSpeed) and that will correct something...or maybe fix permissions...can't figure it out because when I first installed PicSpeed it was working fine.
sorry cannot be more helpful since I do not have access to PicSpeed so cannot try it out myself.

Wallpaper issues

So as we all know if you use your own images for wallpaper that the images turn out cropped and blurry. I was using Simple Image Wallpaper Free but a couple months back the application started to crash and not work prop. The app will no longer let me choose images from my gallery or SD card but instead only allows me to use images from a setup Google account which does not show all my images. When I do select an image it crashes every time.
So I'm now looking for a new app that will let me use my own images without cropping then to crap and making them look blurry as crap. I have tried Image to Wallpaper and I do not like it and it doesn't work that we'll.
Please help. I would love to make my own images for backgrounds. Thanks
QuickPic will do the job well. Its free on the play store.

Uh, no?
I've never had this issue as long as I've used an image with a suitably high resolution. Since the display resolution on the tablet is 2560x1600, I'd recommend using a source image at least that large. Preferably larger, since it will crop it a little by default to properly format it for both portrait and landscape orientations.

This is an issue and I think you need to take a look better. If you setup a 2560x1600 image for your wallpaper you will be pushed to crop the image. Now you easily make the image look clean and crisp by cropping the image to the size of the photo and it looks wonderful BUTTTTTT if you flip your tablet long ways you will see the image for the wallpaper does not cover the full screen and instead your left with a black top and bottom border cause you image doesn't fit.
Now,,,,,,,,, let's go back to choosing a wallpaper again and when we are left with the option to crop but instead we don't crop like before but instead we make sure our crop markers show horizontal and diagonal view so that the image for the wallpaper will be seen covering no matter what angle we are using the tablet,,,,,,,, well guess what?????? Now your image has been blurred and looks like crap.
I don't know how long you have had your tablet but I've had mi he since the day it was released in stores. When the tablet came out this was an issue everyone was b***hing about non stop but now one wants to help me here. I cannot even find the write ups and threads from this issue anymore. There were threads where others had the same issue but your telling me 136 stupid idiots can view my post and thread and ignore to help as if nothing is wrong or they don't care?
What a useless forum and group of people here. Thanks to the two who replied. But this is an issue that had been addressed by everyone in the beginning too. This was also an issue with the previous Note 10.1 and also the 2014 edition. Its by fault Android which makes you crop.
Again look...

Relax brother, android can be a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to stuff like this. Even on the same device, we're all running different roms/tweaks/dpi settings/etc. I can vouch that your issue affects my setup as well, but it may be different for some of the others here.
Seriously though, did quickpic work for you? If not I'll see if I can find something else that will since I can replicate the issue.

Thank you for recommending the app but unfortunately it didn't work. With images your given three options for wallpaper cropping which are photo, Google photos and Quickpic. Tried all three and same issue, it crops the images to the point your left with a blurry image.
Simple Image Wallpaper was the best and I miss having it work. No worry of cropping and worked in landscape and portrait mode.
Thanks for recommending Quickpic but still no fix.
Guess what? Good news got it working with Simple Image Wallpaper but had to download the pro version for 99 cents to get it to work. Happy again. I recommend anyone having this issue to download it. You can now choose a different image for landscape and portrait separate or keep it the same. Doesn't blur the image, doesn't crop the image and uses the whole photo. I use 2560x1600 images which is the display is and I get a 2560x1600 wallpaper.
