OK might be silly question but I thought I'd ask, on my dhd to install circle batt mod etc I had to be rooted but since sgs2 has a lovely recovery built in can I use this to flash themes or mods without being rooted? Obviously not roms just mods in .zip format
Anyone?

To install mods of any kind you need to be rooted.
Also a root-kernel comming with CWM recovery instead of the stock one makes many things more easy or even possible at all.
Hello everyone! I recently began contemplating rooting and doing custom installs for my 959, for something fresh and better performing, also seems my music player has been acting up recently and am really interested in something new along with voodoo sound... If necessary anymore ? Thing is, there are so many ways to root, and there are so many custom roms??? I don't know where to start or what to look for? I just want one of the better, stable, new custom roms available as of this date for the t-959. I search but seems there's no definitive answer? Just a lot of roms haha?
Also when downloading a rom, do I have to download like 30-40-50 kernels and add them? I see all these roms, kernels and update??? Is it just download a rom and that's it, am I making more of it than it should be?
I'm just really noob'ish, really confused, and really, really nervous! I can't afford to brick this phone, but I really want something new.
Thanks for reading, and I apologize for some of the silly questions I have asked .
I fell in love with rom flashing as it greatly improves performance and gives phone a new look. Especially since Vibrant isn't supported anymore.. I can't live without voodoo goodies=) Definitely improves sound.
Negative side of custom roms is it takes up some of your time.. Finding a rom you like, tweaking it.. Not too mention you might brick you phone.
If you decide so.. the most important thing is always read OP...
I used superoneclick to root. I recommend Bionix 1.3.1 as a first rom very stable though a bit outdated. After playing around with the rom, you can try different 2.2 kernels and modems. Then go on to gingerbread roms.=)
Extremely easy. I'd suggest reading some of my guides in my signature.
I would Odin
Then download a ROM (nothing else needed)
Download my option b update.zip
Move both to internal sd
Reboot into recovery
Click reinstall packages
Choose to install zip from sd, select ROM, reboot.
Sent using the XDA app.

Thank you trailblazer and thanks s15....
Any roms you would recommend s15? I appreciate the starting rom you gave me Trail, I'm looking for something a little more up to date I suppose? I was looking at cm7 or Simply Honey 5.0 Revolution(JVR GB 2.3.4)? Something with voodoo already in it? Something pretty stable with a bit of features. Maybe a lil less lag than stock 2.2, better performance, audio and battery life as well?
Thanks so much again both!
cm7 in nightlies still, though seem pretty stable, i havent tried for a while. Lots of features though dont think battery too great.
Simply Honey is a good one, stable, lots of features, great developer support.
I'm currently on RevolutionRom 2.3.4, stable and smooth for me, only bad is itfreezes like once or twice a day. More of a sgs2 look which i like. Good battery.
FYI Flashing Gingerbread roms, you will need to flash gingerbread bootloaders to remove rainbows and see recovery ( theres a post on it)
Also GPS isn't stable on gingerbread.

I think I'm gonna try the simply honey one or wait till he does a final release?, as for the bootloaders, what do I do or go to there? Also for the kernels, do I need to download one for simply honey? Should I download one for it?
I seen some roms or kernel can improve wifi and signal? Is that true, if so point me in that direction hahaha...
Thanks so much bro by the way.
search for Vibrant gingerbread bootloader, it's flashable via odin..simply honey roms comes with bullet kernel & there's Simply Honey Talon Kernel build by simone201 =)
Thanks man, do you mind if I ask which one you would recommend (Odin or Clockwork?)... I stumbled upon this youtube how to called "Custom ROM installation tutorial for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant)", and was just wondering if I can apply all his methods to SH 5.0? Sorry tried to link it but cannot due to my post count... Oh and when I'm done, how should I proceed with the new talon kernel?
Also if there's a new release of honey or the final release, say I installed this one... Do I have to do it all over again? Same wit kernels? Finally, do I need to revert my unrooted stock 2.2 froyo back to a previous version before gingerbread or any of this?
Thanks for your reply. I'm actually feeling like it's almost go time with this rom and kernel haha. Really thanks heaps!
D bootloader is only flashable by odin..you can read the OP for simply honey, what you need is all in there in d development area..flash kernel that works 4ur phone u decide on that wether bullet or talon..you can use sgs kernel flasher to switch bet the two..

One last question before I do this, I seen SH 5.1, but I seen it was for the i9000? Which one should be used? or the one you may recommend? Im looking for voodoo sound controls.
Thanks
EDIT:
Nevermind I read it will be up tomorrow... gonna do 5.1, this is pretty exciting as long as I don't screw anything up hahaha
i reverted back to stock firmware via odin and one click rooted my phone, factory wiped all data and now I remember after I rooted my phone I had unzipped file in my sd card and it told me that i can just delete it after I was done, well i did and then watched a video on clockwork that said not to delete it?
EDIT: Nevermind I fixed it, I just unrooted and rooted again...
So sorry for being a pain, I know you guys have better things to do.
3 questions and this thread is done... thanks for the help...
1. Does the market work on simply honey? Like can go in and search and download it like usual?
2. should I use odin to install 5.1 or cw?
3. how does the kb5 work? is that like default or do i have to flash it?
Thanks a million in advance!
Hi. I have decided to upgrade my samsung galaxy s2 with miui. Since this is my first time flashing an android device I have a couple of questions.
Firstly, is there a reason why I shouldnt install miui on my phone aside from the void warrancy?
#do I get the warrancy back if I unroot and unflash before I take my device to the service?
Next, i have read that i need to root the device first, before i can install miui. Is that true?
#which kernel should I use for that?
I have heard that siyahkernel Is the best. But on the xda thread it says it isnt compatible with any ICS roms. Will it work with miui 4? Is this thread a root at all? I can only assume it is because it has cpu/gpu oc/uc and ov options...
Also, cfroot Has a big and detailed thread. But this one does not support rom manager. I'd need to use cwm for flashing. Is this a problem?
So with which kernel do I go?
No, use a jig too.
Use Cfroot.
What? You don't need rom manager, not sure what you're getting at here.
I'd recommend using a gingerbread version of miui as it's your first time. Gb is stable, ics isn't 100% there yet.

Good choice going with miui, however I wouldn't use the ics versions at the moment as they are buggy. I would personally recommend wiui latest gingerbread version as it is stable as hell and works with siyah.

Thanks for the reply. But:
Whats a jih?
MIUI install guide (miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/how-to-update-upgrade-miui.15424/) says to use ROM manager. But I suppose cwm does the same thing.
I've read somewhere that the last sgs2 miui version is based on official 4.0.3 samsung files. Shouldn't that mean that there are no bugs aside from the ones which are also found on samsung update channels?
I really mainly want miui because of ics, and chrome browser. I have no interest in voiding my warrancy so I can stay on gingerbread. The better UI simply isn't worth it. So you suggest I wait for official samsung updates? (I do want the better UI...)
Thanks for the reply!

No, miui ics introduces several bugs of its own despite being based on samsung rom.

A jig resets your "Custom binary counter", the thing that counts how many times you've flashed a rom/kernel/whatever. Samsung will see its above 0 and may, or may not, said that your warranty is still void.
If you're really that desperate for ics, go for it. Just make a Nandroid backup with CWM incase you don't like it.
No, it's still buggy, but it is still really good & can be used as a daily rom, I would think.

I wouldn't say that I am desperate for ics, but I am pretty sure I will install miui at one time anway. I don't like the cartoonish icons of touchwiz. The question I think right now is, whether I install ICS right now, or should I wait for ICS to become availabe on KIES and install miui later. (I suppose they'll fix the remaining bugs than)
Also, does anyone suggest a different rom than miui, which is better for some reason? I like eyecandy, but I do want performace as well.
Thanks for your answers.
Cheers
Edit:
If I do upgrade to ics and miui. All I have to do is root it with cfroot and use cwm to do a nandroid backup, and than use cwm to install miui 2.3.16?

If you're not desperate then flash miui 2.3.9. Best rom I've ever used.

Fair enough.
The thread title does however confuse me:
MIUI ROM 2.3.9 Releases [GB] & [ICS ENGLISH FULL]
miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/miui-rom-2-3-9-releases-gb-ics-english-full.15662/
So miui 2.3.9 for sgs2 is gb based. If i understand correctly than I have to download from this thread. But isn't installing old versions dumb? Or is 2.3.16 a major jump which introduces new bugs?
Edit:
Okay as far as I understand 2.3.9 is GB and 2.3.16 is ICS. 2.3.9 works very good while 2.3.16 is laggy.
So to get this straight:
I want to install miui 2.3.9-- The steps are:
update to latest version. (i have dukg2 i'll go to kj3)
root with cfroot
backup with nandroid
system wipe, galvik wipe, cache wipe
install miui rom with cwm
???
This is it?
Edit2:
Is there a way to store my defender savegame?
Edit3:
I have read that siyah kernel is very fast. How do i install that kernel?
Do I do all the steps liste above, and than when I am done installing miui install siyah kernel?
Turns out siyah has NTFS usb OTG feature. I now really want siyah.

Before i got samsung galaxy s2 I had a nokia 5800 for 3 years. It was like switching from a sedan to formula 1. I am still so impressed by the power of SGS2 that some minor performance improovements aren't important. Not yet at least...
Thus I am looking for eyecandy (since i can't get ICS and chrome just yet). Which as I've hear MIUI is best at.
Besides, there's no link in your sig. Otherwise i'd love to take a look at that rom. What does miui lack at btw?

Look in xda sgs2 forum is 20 normals rom and 2 miui, you can change what kernel you want, what theme you want, coz almost all is compatible each others. For miui you need special kernel, special theme, etc. Don`t wasting you time using miui

Big banner that says "SlimROM by krinyo75"... not visible on xda's app. Skinny, fast, monochrome - the way I like it (yes, I tried BAT)
What does miui lack:
- installed adfree, still got many ads.
- sammy's stock browser is so much better than MIUI's
- camera is nowhere near good enough
- flaky GPS
- laggy music player (tried it first on my SGS waybackwhen, still no better)
- limited kernel choice
- all phone numbers hyphenated after 3 digits
- don't want workarounds for an app drawer - I want an app drawer, period
Sure some of these sound petty, but horses for courses... since MIUI v4 will be based on Samsung's framework and kernel sources are now released, I'll try it again when it's done.
One thing I love about MIUI - only non-3rd party contacts app I've seen with a list view - no photos, no stupid icon next to contact name.

Hey y'all,
I'm going to feel like a bit of an idiot writing this given I've been using the XDA forums for close to 2 years now, but why should I install a custom 3rd party kernal?
I've unlocked my bootloader (finally) to get android 4, and as I understand I can now install custom kernels if I so wish. I'm not too bothered about the process or requirements for doing it, I'll cross that bridge if/when I get to it xD
I understand it can really mess up your system too, so why should I mess around with it for only (minor?) Improvements?
Also, why do custom ROMs have their own kernels? How does a ROM interact with a kernel?
I'm sorry if these is a really stupid questions. Just one of the few things I've wanted to ask for a while now :')

Using custom kernels with custom roms enhance tha rom cos most custom roms work more better on custom kernels...
A custom kernel can be pre-rooted, support OC, vpn support & many more... Some Custom kernels re better dan stock kernel is terms of battery life, smooth & respond!
Messing with tha system can help alot by removing bloatware which slows tha phone & occupy spaces & also customize yur mobile to yur taste!

For the most part, using a custom kernel or the stock kernel is better for a variety of reasons. Mainly, the custom kernels are usually always better than the stock they are based on. They generally run smoother and faster. Yes they are definitely improvements, whether they are small or big, they are still improvements.
Depending on if you are going to use CM roms or even AOKP roms, over stock roms (roms based on stock firmware) will depend on the need of a custom kernel. If you want to run CM or AOKP then yes you will have to use a custom kernel. If you are just running a stock rom, whether it is based on stock or it is the stock firmware, then you dont necessarily need a custom kernel, the stock kernel will work.
But if you want my input, then i would say go for a custom kernel anyway, even if you are on stock. The benefits out weigh the drawback if you can even call them drawbacks.
Hope I've helped,
Cheers,
Evil.
The way I see it is like this.
Suppose you get a PC with a BIOS and OS locked. If you can flash a newer/modified/improved BIOS along with a tweaked OS,wouldn't you do it sooner or later?!

Hi,
I have been away for a long time here. Been using checkromhd v6 since then. This is a GB rom.
I thought maybe its time to get me a new rom.
I come here and see al these new features : mali, vsync, aroma, dualboot .....
Isn't there a romguide or something? Because this all is getting very difficult.
On gingerbread I think it was easier.
There where lesser option which made it easier to choose. There where also fewer cooks for the SGS2 back then.
If anybody can help me a bit coming up to speed with al this new stuff, I would be very thankfull.

Hey.it's always be guide how to install Rom in these topics...
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
The stickies in the general section have guides to everything right from upgrading from GB to ICS and rooting, dual booting, flashing, etc.
Only thing missing there is details on the latest updates on cm10 and build 4. In brief, the roms based on these two will not run on earlier kernel versions..coz of the new Mali drivers you mentioned.
Aroma basically makes installing a ROM simpler with the help of a GUI. kinda like the installation wizard you have on windows PCs.
Have a look through the stickies (especially the one on the emmc brick bug) and if you have any questions..always happy to help as best I can.

Everything is pretty scattered even for people who are sort of on the lookout and have tried various newer ROMs.
Dualboot is a feature in custom kernels, at least Siyah that I know of, where you can have more than one ROM installed and choose at boot time which one to use. I gather that its mostly useful for people wanting to try the experimental builds of Jelly Bean and have a stable Ice Cream Sandwhich.
Aroma is an installer which is sort of a second step after a CWM flash, and before an install, and allows you to choose via checkboxes which extra options you might want. This is up to the ROM maker as for what selections you might have. Examples are sometimes which kernel, which Samsung apps that aren't included in the ROM, etc.
I don't know what mali and vsync are but I would guess that vsync has something to do with graphics and maybe with the experimental Jelly Bean builds.
The only really important thing I can thing of is, as always, to do a nandroid backup before starting anything and possibly since you have Gingerbread you might need an older Kernel on hand with older CWM for a recovery back to Gingerbread... This needs to be addressed by someone who can clarify and it might also be necisarry to flash a newer kernel and CWM that will allow you to enter a recovery mode that will be compatible with newer ROMs but I don't know if this is the case or not. Again, this needs to be addressed by someone more helpful.
More important than the above is that, since you've apparently been out of the loop for a while, there's been a bug that can render a hard brick on some devices depending on various hardware components and the version of CWM used for flashing. There's a sticky thread about this but the safest thing way to go about it, as I understand, is to just not flash a 4.04 ROM but use a 4.03 one. I've used both and prefered the options available in 4.03, for my needs, as far as mods go.
Also, as for Jkay's work, some ROMs incorporate that and some incorporate similar features but aren't near as feature rich. As with Gingerbread there's only so many ROMs that he's done the work for and it now requires not just flashing of a framework, as was in Gingerbread, but purchase of the app from Google Play that will allow you to customize the settings. The thread is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667846
As for theming, its easier to choose a ROM that has it done already and is compatable with Jkay's framwork (assuming you want those things). You can, use a stock ROM, theme it, install Jkay's framework and it will work quite well but its more work. Vertimus themes are very popular but the site navigation is confusing and will definately be daunting. It would be necissary to read first before making any changes (themes or tweaks) deviating from initial setup. The easiest thing is just to choose something, assuming you want it, already themed and tweaked for Jkay's app to work in advance. Wanam builds seem pretty popular for this and as for the hard brick bug possibility with CWM on 4.04 ROMs, you can probably follow the current Wanam build download into his site and find his forum, search for a 4.0.3 ROM (LPG has played best with my particular handset) and make sure its for the SGSII as people often build for more than one phone and it would be a shame to flash an SGSIII ROM (or something else) on accident, for example.
My recommendation, in summary, is not to worry about dual booting or those other things for the moment, do nandroid backup if you intend to upgrade, find out if you need to have older CWM to downgrade (a flashable one at that in case you get stuck at a boot loop) or a newer one to upgrade, then keep it simple and choose an already themed and Jkay tweaked (you'lle have to buy the app) ROM that isn't a 4.0.4 build of Android, but 4.0.3, and to stay with Samsung based ROMs as a starting point. From there you can get a feel for for things and decide if you like the theming or if you want flash something else with stock Touchwiz, if dual booting is worth the trouble, and then bother to read about the other things you mentioned that I wasn't able to answer... so basically, keep the upgrade simple and then go from there and quite frankly if that means a stock upgrade to unmodified Samsung firmware then so be it.

As far as I know, you can't restore a GB ROM on an ICS kernel and vice versa.

Another thing. Obviously all my apps run on gb. Will they run on ICS to? Especially the gameloft games?

If they've been updated to run on ICS by the game devs..they will. You'd have yo check that out on the game's page. But since a factory reset is recommended when going from one android version to another you might not be able to save the app data..ie, current state of the game on GB and then resume on ICS.

If you want to restore you GB do that.
1.Flash GB stock Rom to your phone
2.Then search CWM recovery compatible to GB
3.If you found it flash it
4.then restore your backup
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Ok I checked and have this file " CF_ROOT_5_0_CWM.zip" on my phone. I also have different kernels ony phone which work with my current rom. This is enough to get me back to GB2.3.6 ?
What would the proces steps be if I am on an ICS rom and want to go back to GB?
Thanks in advance,
EJ

Yes.Do you have nandroid backup ? If yes. So you need to root it or use temporary cwm.
When you do that you can restore nandroid.

oh and another thing.. there still are some GB roms. If all you want to do is try another rom and prefer sticking to GB..you could look up this link

All JB, ICS and GB ROMs for the i9100 are indexed here.
