S2 battery heating up quickly? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

CM9 RC1, Siyah kernel 3.3.3, governor set to pegasusq (heard it's good for multi core devices), CPU speed at 200 to 1200 with 100MHz steps (Siyah default), and modem is whatever came with CM9, XXLPS I think.
So I flashed Siyah the other day, and noticed battery during sleep has been fantastic, a 4% decrease after 9 hours - double that before Siyah. But while wifi is turned on, it heats up really quickly at the top area of the phone, around the camera. Battery loses 1% every 2 minutes, which is crazy!
What could be causing this? I've tried changing governor to smartassv2, lulzactive and interactivex with no luck. Could it be the modem? My current modem is delivering full signal bars everywhere in the entire city, but wifi reception is a bit weak.

Heating up is a common issue with sgs2 ( because of the thinness of the device) , although if the temperature goes above 50 deg. Celsius you may have a serious issue .
Also, try changing your kernel.

battery temp

root rookie here.. First device I ever rooted, really I'm new to cell phones in general.
I flashed this rom adryn bamf 4.1 (non remix) and its working good and all
But I noticed on the smartass setting, which underclocks, that after about an hour or so of playing a game/tv whatever my batter will be around 42C, it seems very hot compared to around 32C before I put this rom and kernal on
Two questions
Am I doing something wrong or is this normal
And, How hot can a battery get before it becomes something to worry about?

Yea in the 40's is way high. Remember, heat is inefficiency (wasted energy). After playing a game for an hour you will probably be in the mid 30's C. I would recommend trying a different kernel and wiping devlik cache. Also, see what apps and services are running in the background and increase the length of time between syncs. Also, smartass scaling did great on my incredible but I have found that it is not perfected yet for the tb. I would suggest ondemand unless the dev or OP specifically says that smartass is the way to go. As far as heat and battery I find that adrenylyn's kernels do the best. As far as performance, drod and ziggy's seem to fly. Isoman or whatever seems to also be a favorite but I personally didn't have great results. It is important to not supremely OC or UC. I would simply stray away from UC in general. For a daily driver, I would stay under 1.5 Ghz, and honestly 1.2 seems to work best for me. Hope this helps.

Just set to 1200 for both min/max? Or on demand scaling up to 1200?

42C is definately too hot! As the previous poster suggested, try a different kernel. There also could be a remote chance your battery is defective.
I really feel like it is more likely that something I am doing is impacting it

Put this kernal on (which everyone says is really good) and this rom and it was getting hot.. So far it is good around 38-39 (still too high?) with 1200mhz on demand min 256mhz
I flashed 2 different kernals and both times after less than 45 mins of browsing forums and playing home run baseball my battery gets to 42C. Could this be caused by the rom? I wonder if I damaged my battery or phone at this point
Mine got up to 113 degrees over the weekend. It felt like I was cooking my phone off and getting ready to throw it like I do in black ops.
I realized my phone was trying to search for a 4g signal when there was none. I entered #*#*#4636#*#*# on my dial pad to turn it off. It reduced my battery heat by 5 degrees. I should point out I was out in the field. Aka in the middle of nowhere where.

42c isn't anything out of the ordinary, or outside operational parameters for a battery of that type. Not by a long shot, actually. That battery can safely operate at 59c, but the phone won't charge it north of about 47c due to the fact charging will increase the temperature even more.
As for the governors:
The smartass governor operates similarly to the interactive governor, but isn't as aggressive and allows for wake up lag reduction. The governor SHOULD be your main line of controlling clock speed, not your min and max settings. Some might like to argue that point, but that's mainly because they haven't messed around with governor parameters. With and ondemand or interactive governors, and even some smartass governors (Not Ziggy's modified), it's entirely possible to set min as low as 61MHz, and max at 1.65GHz and have the CPU rarely, if ever, reach those speeds. It depends entirely on what you've set the governor parameters to be. I don't know of any app that allows you to modify those because the locations of the parameters aren't always the same name or in the same places so it's best done through a script. The script I uses does routinely reach up to my freq_max, but it does it fairly aggressively, then ramps down just as aggressively. Part of that is the nature of the lagfree governor, part of it is where I've set the thresholds. In any event, governor control via a script is a much better solution than castrating your device.

freq range: 200-1,200 mhz
undervolted
have tried various kernels (ninphetamine, speedmod, ragemod - current, mirage) and roms (cognition, solarflare, and leomar -current)
one thing in common is that it in doesn't keep the freq at the minimum for a longer period. even after an 8 hour idle time at night, my phone's at 30% on the 200 mhz, and at about 35% at the 800 mhz.
anyone with the same problem?
i'm using only the setCPU widget and no other downloaded/installed apk's which run in the background (i.e. ATK, etc)
The phone will clock up as and when required, this is normal, it won't stick to the lowest unless you clamp the scaling down, also the phone will clock up on touch inputs to keep things smooth.

Aren't you using a Screen Off profile...? A powersave bias value could also help

[Q] How to tell if a kernel supports undervolt

Ive been running the "cm7-1.4highpro-test-rev3" kernel and it runs great. I've been bumping up my undervolting slowly, and im at -475 at 216 mhz, which (in theory) should be the undervolt clock speed that will save me most battery becasue i have phone set to go between 216 mhz and 312 mhz when screens off. Ive got both 216 and 312 mhz undervolted extremely heavily and i haven't seen ANY issues. The rest of clock speeds are at -100 or so, and if i push much further than that the phone locks up and does weird stuff. This would lead me to believe that the undervolting IS indeed working. But can the processor really run at -475 @216mhz and [email protected] without any side affects?? I haven't once had it get stuck in sleep mode with screen off or ANYTHING, so im a bit unsure if it is actually undervolting or not.. Myrt undervolt shows that my phone is undervolted to the specific settings i set within SetCpu. I also havent seen much, if any, difference with battery life. With 10 hours of idle time, straight idle screen off whole time, wifi, gps, mobile data, 4g, bluetooth, all that stuff off and after 10 hours my battery is down to 85%.
I limited uv clocks, so there is a low limit. One day ill add more low end clocks but it won't matter because the photon uses a separate clock for suspend. I knew people would try to uv to 500 with it set on boot and screw there phone up. So this way I didn't have thousands of user error related uv issues. Uv does works but its more for high end than low end. Low end uv causes sleep of death.

haha ok I understand, just thought I was going crazy there for a bit, or had the most amazing tegra 2 known to man. is there a way to UV the suspend mode then or no? And is my battery life at idle about average or low considering the UV. do you have any kernels for CM7 that aren't limited for UV? Thanks for reply, and all your hard work on the photon!!

Changing suspend voltage can only be done in source. I havnt played with it yet because i need to test it on a stable kernel that way i know any issues would come from it. As far as extra uv steps its planned after wifi fix. I wont add 500 new steps probably 2 steps at a time(-25 steps). Im also planning on changing my clock table(multiples of 216 only). I might make a half step 1.0 kernel underclocked to 108~192. It will be mem underclocked and gpu/avp underclocked. With lower voltage tables on everything. Default scheduling will be powersave. Which you can check out with cpu master right now. That kernel will also have a tweaked 2 core start/stop.

[Q] Isn't Overclocking Android drains more battery power?

First of all, I am totally new to this forum.(I mean as an registered user)
Before that I always had the thing from the forum what I needed.
Now here is my question,
If i overclock the processor speed of my android device to a higher position, isn't it gonna take more battery power than usual?

overclocking is going to drain your battery obviously.

Power consumption = Voltage x Voltage x cpufreq x some constant for your device. If you OC (raise the cpufreq) you will have more power consumption and more heat generation because most of the power is dissipated as heat and the heat is what damages your cpu. It is probably impossible to kill your cpu in one go, because your device should shut off when it begins to over heat (this will look like a random reboot). But you will slowly degrade the over all performance of your cpu and eventually you get to a point where you see a lot of random reboots. So if you decide to OC you probably want to also undervolt as well. This is because power consumption (and heat) scale with the square of the applied voltage. One rule of thumb is that your maximum cpufreq is actually determined by the voltage. For example, my cpu is rated to be stable at 1 GHZ and 1200 mV, so when I OC and UV, I scale the cpufreq as high as I can go, as long as the voltage is not greater than 1200 mV, for me this is 1.5 GHz.
Also remember that your cpu governor will have a big effect on your power consumption and it is probably doing a good job keeping the cpu running in the low range of the cpufreq table, so you are unlikely to see big effects of OC or UV on real life battery consumption.
every chipset is different, even though the brand and model is the same. noone can guarantee you any safe value to overclock.

Overclocking is not the only thing you have to think of in order to improve your phone's overall performance. The most important issue for me is choosing the right kernel and applying the right governor + I/O scheduler. From my experience with Mini (i have tried ALL available kernels and most of ROMs) I can surely say that now with my phone (ICS .587, custom ROM + kernel) overclocked to 1.5 GHz battery with minimal use (20 mins calls, 40 mins WiFi per day) lasts at least 60 hours. When I bought my phone (GB, no OC, all stock) battery was struggling to stay alive for 24 hours with the same minimal use. Conclusion: first pick the right kernel and ROM, then OC.

Is there any rom / kernel you could recommend for top output for 24hour constant calculation. (Specifically the "boinc" app)
I would like max CPU output and i wouldn't want heat throttling since temperature and battery wont matter.
also freezing would suck since i probably wont be looking at it much so i might not notice for a few days.
Also i have a stock battery and stock charger (eu 210). I wouldnt want the drain to overpower the charger leading to downtime.
Ive got neatrom with the roms included kernel but it seems to lower cpu frequencies quite aggressively.
thinking about slimsaber
also with most governors i was getting 800mhz which was kind of annoying. Performance gov would reduce to 200 after a while, i believe because of heating.
Finally slp stays at 1200 and doesnt seem to downclock. Still i feel there is room for improvement.
