Hello awesome sauce developers and community!
There are many threads in the GII about this but I am hitting my head against the wall for the SIII
When headphones are plugged in music, and even notifications or system sounds like the ringing noise Talk makes when you are calling someone is loud and clear. But as soon as speech from another person comes on there is a noticeable attenuation of the sound and it drops it several decibels. Trying to talk to people with headphones is very hard and I am constantly saying "what?" this frustrates the other person and myself.
So. . what is happening with the SIII? Is there some subsystem that is turning things down to try and save my hearing? Is there a way to override it? And yes. . I have tried Volume+ It does not always work and it blows EVERYTHING out. There has to be a way, a mod, or a switch(setting) to turn off this what seems to be a feature.
Anyone have a suggestion or able to look into what is happening?
Thanks.
Oh, on a Verizon SIII Locked right now but have unlocked it and tested with no luck on volume.

Hello, I've bought Galaxy S2 this month and already got it rooted, now I've played with it, before anything, it worked ok, yes the volume wasn't tip top on my headset (Just headphones from audiotechnics), but it was at least bare-able.
now I've played with some settings it told me to go to service mode and change some settings, now I don't know what I've changed exactly but now things are much worse, and I don't even think this is somehow related to the service mode.
I've looked everywhere, tried everything, from equalizers to volume hacks, nothing worked.
What I can tell you is that for SOME reason, I've got LOTS of different headsets + bluetooth, and at one point when I installed... which I think is actually what did the thing is that when I installed CM7.1 which just destroyed it, even just volume on media playback.
So to cut things short, I've tried several headphones and figured out that the headset that comes with the galaxy s2 works just fine, and it makes me think that this issue is somehow related to the many headset profiles I have. But the real question is how do I fix it?!
Any help on the issue would make me smile, because for now, I have to talk regularly or via samsung headset.
Thank you.
Welcome to the low volume world of Galaxy S2. You probably didn't destroyed anything, the headphone volume output is ridiculously low. I have tried many different headphones from stock Samsung, to Sony noise cancelling to Sennheiser top of the world noise cancelling and the volume is still not enough. The best sound I get is from Sony noise cancelling headphones ( don't know the model number, they are around $60.00 in US). The service settings do nothing, they come back to original after one or two phone calls or when you re boot the phone. Are you running 2.3.5? I am reading on this site that the volume is set higher in that firmware. I am on stock 2.3.4. Applications like volume + don't really work, it crashes a lot and doesn't work for phone calls anyway.
Thanks for the feedback mate,
I'm on lite'ning rom right now, it fixed the music volume thing, because that also was a problem after installing cyanogenmod, I guess only time will tell.
Battery life, well I hope with power saving mode it will be better also, but still, I'm used to my iphone, talking through normal headphones
So there's nothing to do but wait?
Try volume + program.. less you raise headphones and speaker volumes on sgsii . Don't know what you are doing but it has never crashed once on mine. You set it and forget it, it doesn't even run all the time

Quick question for anyone who may be able to answer this.
Has anyone noticed a low volume when the speaker phone is ON while making a call?
The phone speakers are awesome when you play music. Also normal call volume is very good. However, when I turn the speaker phone ON during a call, the sound from the speakers doesnt seem to be that great. Infact it is quite faint.
Any one else has the problem?? Also does anyone know any solutions??
Used the speaker phone yesterday for the first time and must admit even set to the highest it was piss poor low, very disappointed as like you said the speaker when playing music or video is fantastic.

this is my problem too, even my X10 mini beats the XPS! I need a louder speaker phone...
I also have this problem with a very very low sound when speakerphone is ON during the phone conversation. I have the latest software 2.3.7.I have had 4 Android phones before Xperia S and did not had such a basic problem. After all the quality conversation is mobiles priority number one before all the media, design, display and etc in my opinion. It is so low that I don't hear 50% of the conversation on a speakerphone when am I alone in a room. Please don't give any solutions like turn up the volume during conversation and all other settings since I have done it already. This is simple a manufacturers software mistake. Sony please take this seriously and don't embarrass on such a basic thing in phone like speakerphone volume. Everything else on this phone is great, only problem is a loose cover for the micro usb that you use everyday to charge the phone.
Strangely, when I switched to speaker mid call yesterday the other person commented that I got A LOT clearer for them Didnt sound quiet for me either, though I was in a quiet environment so it wasnt competing with anything.
Did you turn on xLOUD?

Thats for music with the music player.
when I make a call, the earpiece makes a staticy popping noise. I turn the call volume down and it's still somewhat there but I can't help but think there's something wrong with the earpiece. Do this happen to anyone else?
Does it still do it if you uncheck voice privacy in the dialer settings? That would be my only suggestion.
I experience the same thing. I have to lower the volume to make it go away. I tested my earpiece on other phones (touch pro 2 and iphone 4s) and I don't experience the same static even at the highest level. I suspect that the lte is pushing higher frequencies that some headsets cannot handle. I tried different equalizer settings without any changes. I took a higher quality headset and the distortion goes away confirming my theory. I don't think some headsets can handle the full range of frequencies that the lte pushes out. Does anyone know of any mods that will alter the frequency more than the stock settings?
similar problem, but with playing videos... (at least with some of them)

that seems to have done it, will test it further but for right now thank!
having the same problem, constant ticking noise coming from the earpiece speaker when I make a call, and its only on my end. Tried the solutions mentioned above, still got the issue. No problems with bluetooth or using the speaker phone
I'm having the same issues, doesn't seem to happen on every call. But it only happens on my end where I hear the cracking noise. The person on the other end says I sound fine. Does anyone know I can do?
This is an EVO problem

I have the same problem... sometime it sounds ok, then some call sound like crap! Then I started testing it and found that it happens 100% of the time... just on one end of the phone. If you are having this problem, make a call... If it sounds good to you, ask the person on the other end of the phone how you sound! You will see that one of the two people will have bad call quality, making this a problem 100% of the time!
Hi,
I was using my old Galaxy s3 to call & txt fiance using viber in states, now that I have sold it to mazuma mobile I have used viber to call her for the first time on my z2 & I could barely hear her at all on the top speaker & had to put phone on speaker phone just to hear her , normal call quality is pretty good on mobile calls, volume was up full. She could barely hear me as well, I turned off noise cancellation in call settings & she could hear me a bit better but said it was still quiet.
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?
Cheers.
Have you tried moving the phone around on your ear? Sounds silly, but because of the placement of the speakers, its not as natural as other phones i've used imo (or maybe its how tall the phone is). I found the same issue at first, then i moved the phone around on my ear until the speaker and my ear lined up right and the sound was normal.
Yeah mate, moving the phone around my ear was first thing I tried, I don't have issues with normal calls but speaking to her on viber it's almost like the speaker volume is set really low & I could barely hear her at all, since I call her in the early hours I would rather not have to put the call on speaker phone.

Ah okay. I did a quick google search and it looks like its hit or miss for some devices, so it might be on their end. This thread has a Viber rep responding in it to the same problem, or at least a couple months ago he was(no real solution, other than reporting it).

Also there's an app suggestion in there that a member says helped, and another one would be master volume (i think thats the name). I don't really use Viber, so i'm not much help other than that.
Cheers again for the reply mate, have checked that thread out & also posted in it hoping they will still be checking it, checked the apps mentioned in play store & most haven't been updated since 2011, I do think the issue is like you say more on Viber's end as the volume was fine on my now sold Galaxy S3.
Might have to check out Line or similar apps & get her to do the same as Viber is almost unusable due to this, connection quality was excellent all through the call so I think Viber just need to update or optimise it for the Z2.
Same problem man, here is a fix that worked for me, note 3 international version:

Hello everyone,
I recently got my LGV30, about 2 days ago, brand new, but from a 3rd party seller, and I noticed a very minor poping or "crackling" -- I'd like to call it more of a microcrackle than anything -- issue with the audio that happens . Specifically, when I open up the google browser, and hit the microphone icon on the search bar, about once every 10 or so times (its honestly random) I hear a micro pop or crackle in my speaker, for literally 1/4th of a second, then everything works like normal. It either happens right before the "beep" sound when the microphone icon is pushed, or just after the "beep" after it has been used, or both. It happens more often before I'm going to say something, or immediately after I'm done speaking as it types out what I said. Again, this is a very small "pop" the "ding" sound from pressing the mic still works, it just sounds a tiny bit distorted when first pressing it. Similarly, when using Gboard, and trying speech to text on the Messenger app, I hear the damn microcrackle again.
Here's the crazy thing though, I have ran about 5-6 videos on youtube that are supposed to be speaker tests (high and low frequency noise), everything sounds great. I have listened to over 10 hours of video/music and only once noticed a tiny bit of crackling, but honestly It was so quick that I'm not really sure if it wasn't just the song playing. I also have not noticed it with headphones but will continue to test this. I also picked up another android phone I had years ago, the Moto G4 Play, and tried to replicate the issue, to my surprise, my MotoG4 play has a similar issue, but its significantly more quiet than my LG. In the Moto's case, I press the microphone icon on the keyboard and I hear more of a "buzzing" sound immediately after, then, once I stop talking and hear the closing "beep" of the microphone, again, the buzzing sound. Much quieter, and likely why I never noticed it at all when using that device.
I'm just wondering if you all think this is a software issue, or a hardware issue? I have made several phone calls, people say I sound good, and I can hear them fine. I feel like something is happening when I press that button, as it doens't happen at ANY OTHER time when using audio. I'm thinking it might be the microphone "poping" itself awake? Maybe? I don't really know how this works.
Should I go through the trouble of returning the phone over this, or trying to get an exchange? It wouldn't be easy, since I bought the phone brand new off Ebay, and would need to contact seller (has 30 day money back guarantee).
Please let me know.
Thanks!
