I need a good,new-ish android. What would you recommend? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've been using my HTC Incredible for about a year, year+1/2. Keeping it as up to date as possible, never activating it, etc, etc. It's like my little pocket computer. But, I think it's reached it's limit. I need something new, preferably something with a fully functional Paranoid Android rom, or a big enough screen for a tablet rom/CM9 with a low DPI acceptable.
I've been here for years, although I rarely post nowadays, but I trust this community. So, whatsayyou, XDA? What's the best android I can get right now - for under $200-ish, and not in a contract with any company?

Nexus 7.
But it isn't a phone :O

I have the Incredible 2 and it'a an awesome phone! You could also go with one of the HTC One phones or the Incredible 4G, depending on your carrier

Under $200 off contract will be tough - probably the cheapest top end phone is the Galaxy Nexus at $349 direct from Google. On contract and you should be able to get something like the One series or the Galaxy s3.

How much for the Atrix 2?
I know under $200 is tough, that's why I'm asking - I'm all out of ideas.

$699 off contract
Look here and you will see how few phones are available for that price off contract (or not prepaid) http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=amb_lin...f_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=1360144662&pf_rd_i=android

$200 isn't a big amount to beat HTC Incredible experience. So, I'd recommend you to hunt down a second-hand smartphone from eBay etc.

It's a hard phone to beat for it's specs. It's just...not quite snappy enough, and the screen isn't quite big enough to be a mini-psuedo-tablet.

You can't get them with $200 in pocket...

I have two Nexus S phones that I still love! As long as Google (or Cyanogenmod) keep pushing out the latest updates for them and they run well, I'm going to stick with them. JB on is way more "buttery" on this phone than ICS. It's like a new phone with every update!
Doesn't meet with your screen size requirements... but at least where I live, $200-ish won't get you anything that great without a hefty contract.

PM Sent. Is it on AT&T, or a better network? Also, the state of mods doesn't look that great for the A2, but, if ICS is fully functional+rooted, I don't care too much.

Yes, its on AT&T but I can get it unlocked. There are several GB based roms, both odexed and de-odexed ones. We just saw a leaked update for ICS, so that means we'll see a soak or official release in the next few weeks.

Everything works, and it isn't a refurbished phone. As far as editing the build.prop I'm not sure about that possibility to run tablet ICS. The official ICS release should come soon. The leak we've seen has created some issues that are being worked out. Also, the bootloader is locked which means the inability to flash kernels. Don't know if that's a deal breaker for you or not. There's a dev working on a brute force script to hit the BL with but thats still in the works.

I'd like to flash kernels and non-stock roms, but I can live with just [rooted] ICS. Besides that, I have faith in the more experienced members of this community - we'll have the whole phone someday.
On a side note, you'd think Moto, being owned by Google, would have less-restrictive phones.

This. And as far as trying to build out the brand, it was a poor move to put this into the hands of Verizon the same day the Razr was announced. It sucks because of the fact that data is moving into the cloud, access $80 per 5 piece. I'll never go back to Verizon and the MoPho is a device I can stick with for awhile because the communications and GPS functioning on the device is great.

I love everything about the Galaxy Nexus and am really tempted to upgrade. But two things threw me off:
- exclusive to Verizon. What the heck. What happened to the promise to be open and not stick to one carrier? That was just last year when they released the Nexus S!
- Likely to be CDMA only. As a student from Hong Kong that goes back every half year, I need my GSM connectivity on my Photon.
Now that Google bought Motorola, I have high hopes that they will bring ICS to Photon.

the international version is gsm and carrier unlocked, just the same as the previous nexus. if you are on tmo or att that version will work fine
verizon exclusive is only until sprint gets lte set up. sprint just bought a CRAPLOAD of iphones and is subsidzing them at a horrible cost to themselves. once they have the capital and lte networks up i expect to see a sprint version

I was asking everyone for their opinions just to get some idea of what I should do...I would wait for sprint to get the device because I used to work for Verizon and they are full of **** over there but I am not sure about the devices as a whole...things have been moving really slow over here and I give much thanks and props to the guys that have been developing over here but I am used to flashing at will without all of the problems with 4g wifi etc...I get bored easily so I am already looking for my next device but when I can flash at will it keeps my current device fresh and new for me and I don't get bored with it as fast....if I can get ICS in the next couple of Weeks thru a leak our something I will be good until upgrade time I guess
Motorola is probably working on it but a release of ics won't be until march April maybe.. It won't come overnight but in time...

Sprint Galaxy Nexus LTE 1.5gz?

Attention: Random off topic junk
Ok. The photon is my favorite Android phone ever out of about 14 android devices but I think I found my next phone. Plus I'm also in Houston where sprint is launching LTE by June 2012. It was fun photon but we're going to have to go separate ways. Its not you, its me..

EDIT: I will see you day one Kennypow3ers!!! I just wonder about battery to power it. I still need specs though!
photon is the best phone I have ever had but there will soon come a day where we must part ways
I honestly don't think this is enough of an upgrade to the Photon.....specially if you have to pay full price for it.
It still has a pentile on it, the processor and gpu are overclocked but are still older, etc.
Personally I'd have to wait for a 720p non-pentile screen, with either Tegra 3 or the new Exynos GPU's Samsung will start putting on the Galaxy S3 line. That would represent a true step up.

I thought their last patch fixed the LOS issue, i am cautiously watching them again, but i have been absolutely thrilled with the build quality of this phone so motorola will get a second shot if they keep up with updates.
When I first heard this this afternoon, I thought "Great, possibly will get this on my second line" but then I remember the un-timely updates, the radio issues.
Besides I love my Photon and it being a world phone is a added bonus.
Although I'll be honest, the Nexus LTE aspect is nice as well as the unlocked bootloader, etc but I wonder if it will be just LTE or LTE/CDMA or a world phone as well.
For now, I'll wait it out till Googlrola comes out with the next super duper Nexus X LTE/CDMA/GSM 2.0Ghz estravaganza.

I will likely get this pre-order, I have the loot, but a few things have to be confirmed..................
5MP Camera? Not a deal breaker as it still shoots true HD.
16Gb Memory (real 16Gb, not 9.XGb Partioned!!)
32Gb MicroSDHC Slot!
RADIO!!!! Lets face it, if calls and internet are jacked, its a total POS!!!
Support - Both Development and Samsung
Battery life - I need 12 hours Min!!!!
Root! - I will need to Root for SetCPU as 1.5GHz will suck the life of above!
Market - ICS for Mobile is not widely supported, YET!

[Q] are some of the devs going to the note?

i was wondering if some of the devs for this phone if they were going to the note?
I don't know, I'm not a dev, but I doubt it. Seems like more of a niche phone to me, and it has the damn Snapdragon. I hope that the next-gen Exynos's have LTE support- I noticed that even the Tegra 3 is being replaced for the LTE versions of HTC's phones for the Snapdragon S4... yikes.

No, which is why very few developers are likely to touch it. (I assume the OP means the AT&T Note, not the original. The original periodically tempts me, but I've already bought one device off-contract this year.)

No clue - nothing on the market now. However, unless AT&T shapes up and stops mangling their devices, it's almost guaranteed I'll buy the whatever is the latest iPhone with my contract subsidy and immediately eBay it - only because the iSheep love to overpay on eBay. My next device is almost guaranteed to be an international device or the next Nexus.
It's too soon to tell, I think my next upgrade is early 2013.
I'm waiting for windows phone 8, if it fixes the problems I have with it...
HTC One X looks really good... even the AT&T version (with the S4 Krait processor).
Im waiting for the GSIII of course. Samsung and HTC are the only companies that are worthy of my money, but perhaps something awesome will turn up at MWC and make me think twice on that.
Like the LG Vu? Now that is a fine looking.... I cant do it.
On the other hand I also thought the One X looked pretty nice too, looks like they tamed down sense in sense 4. Huawei and ZTE showed some cool phones. And Asus showed the padphone again. If it ever ships that could be cool.
But like entropy, I don't qualify until 2013, so I'm not looking too hard at any of these phones. If something really entices me I might give the 3 warranty replacements in 90 days trick a go.

I just bought the International Galaxy note (coming from the AT&T SGSII obviously) and I love it. I prefered the Exynos processor and the hardware button over the AT&T version. I can't see a quad core in a phone really blowing me out of the water as much as the dual core did. Dual core made everything in Android run very well (especially the Exynos, thank you Samsung) so it works great for me. Not to mention all tablet apps run on the Note with ICS (ex: Photoshop!). Don't think I'll be going down in size, or buying another AT&T version, anytime soon.

I said the same thing for supercurio, existz, and hardcore. Every kernel dev that doesn't give up on its followers will always be a great dev.
Laziness is a powerful thing - sometimes you'll see a good dev go to a device with good development, and be happy with what's there or just popping out patches.
If I had an I9100, I'd probably have just popped patches over to Ninpo until he stopped development.

I'm tempted to do this. .
I'd still have to pony up $400 for a GSIII, not worth it IMO.
Upgrade for me, $50. Also tempted.
Interesting business tactic.. they have to be losing money on this lol

Probably not losing as much as you think. Plus if you buy all the accessories and S crap they'll be making bank $$. $200 for Rezound $130 for Nexus sounds legit loool.
I'm also skeptical about this, got email from samsung and decided to search on xda and here i am. For my rezound its 200, but they are also offering $135 for my Hero S. Is this legit?
$15 for my Fascinate. Wowza. $200 for the Rez wouldnt be bad if we could get the GSM Nexus from google, but it wouldn't do much good if still w/ Verizon.
Before you guys get all excited about this, you should go to the Verizon S III forums and read about the issues that phone has. Horrible signal reception, locked bootloader, as well as other issues.

Still doesn't solve the fact that Samsung has crap radios. I have my Droid Charge as a backup still and it is night and day in radios compared to HTC phones. Unless you go GSM, forget about it.

This is interesting...it appears Samsung is going for market penetration with the phone and trying to get as many people on the phone as they can, then allowing customers to sell to customers. Only downside I've heard is the signal quality, and even that I've only heard about on the forums. I can't tell you how many people I know have switched to the GS III. And every one of them is just giddy about their new GS III. This is people who previously couldn't care less about their phone, very non-technical. At least in my smallish circle, it's quickly becoming the iPhone of Android. Wonder if that's Samsung's plan...
Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy with my Rezound with no intention of changing. Just making an observation.

Probably on Launch Day.
Nope. The screen will KILL battery life like butter.
Via my Google Galaxy S3 running sweet sweet Jelly Bean
Depends on the off contract price... expecting it to be around 7-8 hundred so probably not.

I agree we already have the same phone in 2 other threads. Although I sound a bit like a hippocrit since I made a thread on the Japanese version when they had the dlx thread out.

Nope. The rezound is my last HTC device. They make decent quality stuff, but they refuse to support it. (see tablets) After buying two tabs and getting the shaft, I have made a vow to not buy another HTC product. Not to mention the hoops they make us jump through just to root and rom our phones. They might aswell be dead to me.

Delete it then fine by me. I only saw the butterfly thread and was just trying to provide some information.

Samsungs is easily bypassable. Which is where I plan on going. And it's not like "htc's unlockable" BL does all that much good. If it did we wouldn't need to s-off.

Well, it started with the many replacements of the tbolt, then HTC's hard stance against updating their tablets kinda pushed me over the edge, then they updated the flyer/view to broken software and they wont even fix it. Now the Rezound is having touchscreen issues. So I'm just tired of dealing with the problems and the lack of OEM support after purchase. I appreciate the Dev community for the zound, but sammy seems to be stronger in that dept. So I think I am going to give them a shot. I won't touch Moto with a ten foot pole. It may be a bad move, but I'm willing to take that risk after all the issues I have had recently with HTC. So for me, from here on out, it's going to be Nexus, or Samsung.
Samsung is worse.
I love my Rez and I still think of it as probably one of the, if not the most undervalued android phone released to date, but I don't see myself going for yet another carrier exclusive device after this. Of course, reviews might be so great for the DNA that I could change my mind but so far I am not that impressed.
Having said that however, the lack of a LTE capable Nexus 4 kinda limits the options for those looking to upgrade atm and I really cant see myself with a Galaxy S device. Wish Sony would be given a chance at penetrating the US market, they seem to strike a fair balance between corporate dev support, hardware and software quality.
I'll be getting this. The hardware and build quality will be top notch, it can be unlocked through HTCs dev website and be able to load cm. It was between this and the note but son, I am dissapoint at it having the older gen exynos and 720p screen on a 5.5 inch screen.
no, my next phone will be honor 2 or note 2
battery is important factor to me now
i dont think i will ever came back to htc
even im sense-boy
Nah, samsung isn't worse.

Its looking like ill most likely be getting it. I'm thinking ill be getting the DNA and one other new gen phone probably a GSM phone since I have two contracts, one with ATT and one with Verizon.
But I will be more careful than usual with this purchase. I'm currently so broke I can't afford the down payment on a grilled cheese sandwich. But this phone is a priority, and I owe it to the BAMF community. So I've been saving my pennies and will be selling some stuff to raise some funds.

samsungs radios and signal are 10x worse.
in my house, my gs3 gets about 6kbps download on 3g.
my rezound, when its not pulling 4g in my house (which the nexus and GS3 CAN'T), pulls atleast half a meg to a meg per second. doing anything on the gs3 on 3g is terrible, and ridiculously slow. fb app won't even load. rezound loads it no problem. hell, i even tethered 3 tablets to my rezound last night and while we were all browsing at the same time, ti was STILl faster than my gs3
i don't think i'd buy antoher samsung phone ever again, and i really want the DNA...dunno if i wanna fork out 600 bones for it tohugh
