so once in a while, especially when swiping between screens (apex launcher) and in some other instances, i see the top left corner of my screen flicker. it's an area about 1" square. Occasionally it'll "freeze" for a few seconds and basically just looks like a translucent grey. it doesnt affect funtionality or anything but is kinda annoying. I see it in other apps occasionally too (such as games).
Anyone else see this? the phone is rooted and some of the bloatware is removed.. otherwise nothing special.
First I've heard of this. Does it happen with the stock launcher?

hard to say - it's intermittent so dosn't always happen and I havent yet found a pattern.. i also use Android Pro Widgets calendar widget so it's possible that the widget is buggy i suppose? I really have no idea what it is and cant pinpoint when it happens
I could be completely wrong here and probably using the wrong terms but I always thought that launchers were the ones responsible for "drawing" the screen. In other words, if you were using a launcher that wasn't optimized for the Inc 4g's screen, it could cause the artifacts that you are seeing. Again, take this with a grain of salt because I have no clue what I'm talking about, just something that I assumed when it came to launchers.

I had the same thing happen with Apex. That was a deal breaker. Have you tried Nova Launcher? Gives the same AOSP look and seems more stable to me. And no flicker.

yep, it seems that was an Apex issue. Switched to Nova for now. we'll see how it goes. Thanks!
Flickering square on HTC One S running Apex Launcher (demo video)
I have the same problem with Apex. This is the reason why I'm using Nova despite I prefer some features of Apex, like the widget previsualization on the apps panel.
The bug is shown in this video on Youtube: watch?v=4uh7DPg4bjE
It only happens when you've turned off the option "hide labels on icons".

I would like to know the same thing. I dont care for the animations.
The problem I have is that I'll want to just advance on screen, but I'll fling to vigorously, and the home screens will spin out of control, requiring me to play a game of roulette where if I land on the screen I want, I get to use it... Or something. What were you thinking, HTC? The spinning isn't a useful feature.
Your best bet is to just use ADW or Launcher Pro.
I've been using Launcher Pro since about 15 mins into owning the device. It's excellent, and makes much better use of widget real-estate. Jack the columns and rows up in the preferences, and you get to create very dense homescreens.
Also, with the separate tap, and swipe gestures for the dock icons, there are enough slots to add basically all the apps you use regularly.
The only downside I can see is that I can't seem to reconfigure the apps on the lock screen when I'm running Launcher Pro. I guess I have to switch back to the HTC launcher temporarily to do that.
Great tablet made better with this launcher.

There's a remedy to this problem... "move" the screen, don't flick it.
Can't blame HTC on this one... I'd have to chalk this up to user error... Some people may like desktop roulette.
Before I switched to ADW, I think you could stop the spinning by tapping on the screen you wanted... Oh well.

Well yeah the remedy is to adjust how I manipulate the device but my feeling is still that there isn't a use case for spinning the screens around. It's less usable because of it.

I feel like this is something that is an issue in some third party launchers, but this is constantly happening in the leaked TouchWiz Honeycomb build for the Tab 10.1. I think this was happening to me before on the stock OS as well. I am not using ADW or LPP, just home launcher, and even if I am not rotating the display, the widgets and icons are always reloading/redrawing when I come back to it from an app. WHY??
I see no options or settings relating to this and I have done nothing to cause it.
Anyone else having this issue?? It happens to me like 7 out of 10 times when reverting to the homescreens.
I'm seeing the same thing on an Epic running ACS (Froyo). It tends to happen when I rotate the home screen. I've had the phone about 3 weeks - I only noticed it happening within the past week or so. It may have had something to do with an app I installed, but I have no idea what. Any ideas anybody?
Happening on the pre touchwiz stock rom. I use ADW and Stock Launcher. I also can't seem to make the default home setting start set. I repeatedly get prompted to choose a home screen when. K press HOME.

I think my issue may just be a performance problem with Touchwiz when there are a lot of icons in the home screens. If I clear the data for TwLauncher, it rotates pretty quickly. As I add my icons back, it gradually gets slower. Once I have them all back (I have about 70 icons), it takes 15-20 seconds to redraw. LauncherPro doesn't seem to have that problem, so I'll just use that for a launcher instead.
I'm having some trouble with my launcher of choice, Apex.
Every now and then it will crash, leaving me with a black screen. The screen will remain black and the phone unresponsive for around 10 seconds. Then I'm thrown back to my home screen.
I'm assuming that it's Apex crashing, but there is no error message or dialog box of any kind, so I can't be sure.
This often happens if I click the back button multiple times to get out of an app, or when I am using an app and then click my home button. It does this with many different apps.
Is there any way I can start troubleshooting this? Logs of some kind? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm using apex (pro) and it works fine, maybe you clicking back several times is just making the app FC or just brain-farting android.
I have the Pro version too. And yeah at first I thought it was me causing it, since the last Android phone I had was running Eclair and I thought that maybe ICS doesn't like back button mashing... But the black screen also happens if I background an app using the home key.
It's really a shame because I'm loving Apex.

Hmm well that's really weird. Do a backup in apex, then force stop, clear data, uninstall and then reinstall it. See if you still have the problem. Also, see if the "keep in memory" option is checked, this should prevent things like this, or it having to load again when coming back from another app.
I had the same issues with apex, couldn't figure out what exactly caused the problems...for that reason I'm on go launcher for now.

It seems like this has solved my problem! It was unchecked, so I checked it and now it seems fine! You the man!
DidnĀ“t solve it here, as said above, it is already checked. Maybe an update will solve these problems in near future, it is really sad that apex suffers here.
It appears I spoke too soon, Apex still crashes/freezes for me.
I also tried Nova Launcher and it does the same thing.
I keep very few apps backgrounded, and I have removed a lot of bloatware. My phone should be a lean, mean machine... I guess I just have to live with it, maybe in the future a custom ROM will solve it.
If you guys check your logcat logs, you'll see evidence of apex crashing. I already contacted the developers and they said it's a known issue but are still looking into it. For now I'm using go launcher.. not so smooth, but lots of features
Had the exact same issues, switching to Nova solved the problem for me.
Yup same problem, back on touchwiz for now.

I got my s3 on wednesday. I noticed that sometimes I press the home button when in an app, nothing happens, then a few seconds later the screen goes black, except for the notification bar. Then it finally shows the homescreen and it redraws all the widgets. It will then work for a while abnd then happen again, probably about 5 or 6 times a day.
I have since rooted it and put a custom rom on, and it did the same thing. i have now gone back to stock rom.
i am using Apex Launcher.
Anyone else had these problems?
I have had the same thing happen to me sometimes with Apex, but not with any other launcher. I believe it's a bug in Apex. Try checking the "keep in memory" option, although that didn't help me.
I did wonder if it was Apex, I thought it happened with touchwiz as well, but thinking about it I cant be sure. i will give keep in memory atry, or ill switch to Nova for now. Ill keep you updated
Its because you have too man apps running in the background. Then your homescreen gets kicked out of RAM to free RAM. So it has to redraw. Maybe your launcher uses a Lot of memory?

I have used Apex launcher on the s2 and its fine. Its only on the S3 with 1Gb Ram, with not a lot running. Almost certain its not out of RAM unless its a bug with Apex and the s3.
Just seen on the APEX app xda forum there are others with the same problem on their s3s. SO it must just be an Apex bug with the S3
I use the paid version of apex and I don't have the problem where the screen goes black. I do have the redraw issue with the option to keep in memory on.
But apex redraws really quickly, much quicker than the redraw of touchwiz.
Stock rom
I have the paid version too. The guy on this page half way down posted about the same problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452663&page=393
I get this when using the stock launcher. Sometimes after pressing the home button, it'll go black for a split second, then the icons and widgets do then appear 1 by 1 but pretty quickly. It's as if the launcher is doing a quick restart.
Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

I am using stock launcher and its fine mostly But when I load up a few tabs of heavy webpages in browser the home screen redraws. It's definitely a memory issue and not just specific to any particular launcher.

black screen is just apex, it's a different and far more annoying problem than redraw.
Tapatalked.
Yeah Im talking about the current app/screen freezing for about a second or two, then a black screen appearing with just the notification bar visiable, for about 2-3 seconds, then finally the home screen loads and redraws.
This has only happened to me with Apex and I have seen others with the same problem.
I do find it strange that its not more of a well known issue, considering Apex is one of the most common launchers on ICS and the S3 has been out comign up to a month.
well, tried apex, stock, nova. somehow all have same problem. more or less. try removing your big widgets, like the clock. think they are causing the redraw problem.
coz i also have this problem. but soon realised that it doesn't happen on pages with no widgets.

I had the same problem with apex launcher, the screen goes black as if it was frozen and then its started to redraw, I switched back to the stock launcher, it still redraws, but it only takes 0.5 seconds comparing to apex of 3-5
Hope that they fix it soon ( Samsung or apex team).

Same problem here. Let me know if someone finds a fix!
i'm on LEA rom and this still happens to me, gets very frustrating since this issue occurs randomly, will try nova launcher for now and see how it goes.
Its definitely occurring when the home screen redraws and is down to lack of ram and system not protecting the launcher from closing.
I am testing Go Launcher and so far, an hour of testing I have had no redraws so I'm gonna stick with that and see what happens.
Phone has killed apps but not go launcher so far
Something I noticed about a week ago, and that I've yet to figure out the cause of, is that trying to switch the app drawer icon's image while running Nova is no longer working. It does when you first install Nova, or after clearing the data, however it eventually stops working. Instead, holding down the icon's image in the edit pop-up makes the screen hang for a second (like it's going to open the icon preview screen) then revert back to the edit pop-up. A few others mentioned this over on Droid Life, so thankfully I don't appear to be the only one.
Any idea what may be causing this little glitch over time?

Hmm that's strange.. No problems at all here with Nova Prime. I've switched the app drawer icon many times and doesn't happen.
Maybe try clearing cache/Dalvic for the entire phone not just Nova data, may help may not
- Tapatalked from the G3
Been running Nova since day 3 so 3 and a half weeks at least (later upgraded to Nova Prime) and no such issue...
If it were happening constantly I think it'd be a little easier to pinpoint an issue. Best I can tell though, it only crops up after changing the icon pack a few times. Also, adding another app drawer shortcut to the home screen does not alleviate the problem either. Something is causing it to randomly lock up, and I believe it may have something to do with LG's stock software. Granted the only evidence I have to back that up stems from never having issues with any of my other devices and the fact that there is little to no reference of this in conjunction with Nova to be found on the web.

This is what I get for posting a topic after not searching for another answer since mid July when I first noticed it xD. Curious that it would require moving back to stock. That makes me believe it really is something in the code on LG's part that is causing it. Hopefully Nova can find a workaround for it.
