Porting SGSIII apps to AOKP - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Is it possible to port over apps such as the Video app and music app from the GSIII rom to AOKP.by simply just copying the Videos.apk file in to the System/app/ folder (and of course, changing the permissions).
I love the fact that I can watch a video and text at the same time, and I hate to lose that feature when I switch roms.

Nothing tw based will work on aokp.

Aw. alright. Well thanks for the quick Reply!!!!

Transparent Sense Lockscreen Fix For The Mytouch 4G yet?

Was wondering if anyone tried this or found a smiliar fix for the stupid lockscreen blocking the wallpaper. I can tollerate or even appreciate much of everything else in this version of Sense, everything except my animated wallpaper getting blocked by this crap
try downloading from market two apps, one called no lock so u can disable the sense lockscreen then download an app called simply lockscreen, you can choose the transparency to what you want so your background will show thru, love it!
You can also use Root Explorer and delete the HTClockscreen.apk and ODEX file. You will have a transparent lockscreen with the stock ASOP sliders...
well i perma rooted phone thanx to visionary & deleted the HTCLockscreen apk & odex file.
yet I still get the lockscreen, even when i delete and immediately reboot.. THE HTCLOCKSCREEN APK & ODEX FILES COME BACK IN /system/apps !!
wtf am I doing wrong? lol - did this whole rooting thing before on older android phone yet the lockscreen that won't die is making me feel like a n00b
also read on here that Titanium Backup can also force out HTC Lockscreen to Froyo default but don't know what app name it falls under in the huge list of apps on my phone since i don't see anything obvious like "HTC Lockscreen" or anything of the sort.

make sure youre deleting the apk from /system/app and that youre mounted in R/W that worked for me now i have the transparent AOSP lockscreen. but understand that if you delete this apk your stock alarm wont function properly and you will have to download an aftermarket app from the market. for some reason HTC tethered the stock alarm into the HTClockscreen.apk lol so it goes off when its set to go off but you cant dismiss the alarm afterwards lol
Is there any way to make it NOT be transparent but rather with a black background, (or possibly other configurable setting, such as settings -> personalize -> lockscreen background)? The transparency looks not so good as the desktop widgets come through and the texts overlay one another.
I renamed the HtcLockScreen.apk (I have the deodexed ice glacier rom) in /system/app but ended up putting it back because it caused me to have convulsions for it to be transparent.

lol yes yes and yes i have R/W mounted in the root folder (otherwise it wouldn't let me delete anything lol). and i do go in that exact folder and for the moment those two files are deleted
yet the moment turn screen off and bring it back up... there's the dreadful lock screen of HTC's even tho the files are deleted. and upon rebooting the phone (hard or quick reboot) they magically appear
is everyone who deleted these two files with success using a secondary ROM? Because I'm still on the default ROM since.. well I still like much of the default ROM outside of course... this cursed lockscreen
You have s=off ? If you don't, even though you're remounting /system as rw, it might not be writing back out to flash memory if s=on. Just a thought.

more then a mere thought, it's the fix that finally works!
went through all these steps except the visionary stuff that I already did to get root and after deleting those two HTCLockscreen files & rebooting, whala!
of course I'm now seeing the issue folks was talking about with seeing the homescreen icons/widgets through the lockscreen but i feel like progress was made still. thanks all!
How can you hide the homescreen icons, dock, and activities from the clear sliding lock acreen after deleting the htclockscreen file?
not sure about Espresso/Stock but on the Desire HD and Desire Z ROMs the only thing that shows through is the wallpaper (static or LWP whatever you have set), no icons or widgets.
Well those phones arent the one with the issue, the g2 has the stock lockscreen I want.
I deleted the htclockscreen.apk but not the htclockscreen.odex and I do get the transparent lockscreen with the sliders people mention, (idk what's the point of deleting the odex file if it works fine by just deleting the apk) I also get the icons, widgets etc. being displayed in the lockscreen as well. This is my main issue. Is there a way to fix the settings of the ASOP lockscreen that has been aquired by deleting the htclockscreen.apk? How? If not can I just flash a zip of a ASOP lockscreen instead, that way its not been modified by htc?
Did you guys see this one? I've been using it since Dec.

I wan't talking about the phones, i was talking about the ROMs that have been ported from their stock versions to run on our phones. Stock they are running HTC Sense without the TMO Espresso overlay on top of it. I was pointing out that on Stock Sense deleting the HTCLockscreen.apk it gets you have the "stock" G2/AOSP screen like what you are wanting where you can see your wallpaper image or your LWP running behind the locksliders without seeing all your icons and widgets. so if you (like myself) prefer Sense over AOSP/CM but prefer the AOSP lockscreen sliders, then switching to one of eVil D's or Gr8Gorilla's Desire HD ports or eVil D's Desire Z port will let you have exactly what you are trying to do. and it's not just this phone... my wife's phone and my backup phone the MT3G-Slide which also runs Espresso over Sense has the same issue on the stock ROM. it is an issue with Espresso.

Thank you guys both responses are really helpful ( : I actually made a combination of both evil d's desire z port and the updated zip found on post #48 of the thread of the link provided lol,
"THANKS, worked like a charm!!! Here's the updated zip file. Attached Files Really_Trans.arrows.Lockscreen.zip (3.1 KB, 50 views)"
It works really nicely, except the lockscreen music widget is shifted to the right when music is being played when
the transparent lockscreen zip has been applied. Stock rom or port rom of desire z.
@Ravenwulf whats the difference between evil d's desire hd port and gr8gorilla's desire hd port? and whats the difference between the desire z port and desire hd port? Pros and cons?

differences between eVil D's HD port is that it is using a newer baseband for the build and some of the themes ported for gorilla's ROM have issues with eVil's ROM. but there is a thread over on the D-HD board that has a bunch of themes/skins that work with both CAN BE FOUND HERE, just download the ones you like and install them (not flash but install using a file manager like Astro). the only major/noticeable difference between the D-HD and D-Z that I found is that the D-HD only has portrait mode for the home screen when using stock/Sense launcher (like our stock/Espresso ROM), where as the D-Z home screen will rotate between portrait and landscape depending on how you're holding the phone.

Wow that was a fast reply. I'm gonna sound like a total noob, what's baseband? Does it mean
Like signal strength? So should I use evil d's Rom instead because it'll have faster speeds?
Also I noticed gr8gorilla has the genius button app installed in his d-hd rom while the other two roms from evil d don't.

superclean vs. just deleting apps?

like everyone else, there are a lot of icons or apps (depending on what we're talking about) that I don't use. what does superclean leave in, and how hard is it to just delete them.
SuperClean is much much more beyond just deleting apps.
This thread mostly details.

Read the changelog for any changes/modifications since the original. The latest SuperClean (2.6) is a hybrid of EB01 and EB16, as well.
Edit: And this should either be in the Super Clean thread, or in General- not a new thread in Development.
okay, thanks. I guess that rules out superclean. I like touchwiz too much. how do you delete stock apps?

Remove the .apk by hand, or use something like Titanium Backup and remove it, or use Titanium Backup's Freeze feature. Be careful what you remove! If you remove some things, TouchWiz and other stuff could stop working!
i don't miss touchwiz at all. honestly what do you like about it?
and i am not being rhetorical, seriously why do you like it over a clean rom running launcher pro?
I like the effects, look, and feel of it. I've never had any speed issues with it, and I use the touchwiz apps like program manager, media player, weather clock, calander, clock, ect...
This belongs in general discussion.

Dogma serves no one. Several touchwiz apps are more functional than their aosp counterparts. Now I do agree that the touchwiz launcher is meh, but there is a lot more to a ROM than just the launcher.

I agree, the launcher is the weakest part of TW, but even the launcher isn't so bad. As far as speed goes, the thing that really slows it down is the TW widgets. Those must be terribly bloated.
My biggest complaint is just the goofy app drawer with the seizure inducing app backgrounds, but the home screen setup isn't too bad. I've switched back to it from ADWex as EX was starting to exhibit some strange behavior (seemed like memory use was ballooning over time and the whole system was slowing down).
Why not just use titanium backup and freeze the apps instead of deleting. (you need the premium version though)
If you really want to know what files are different between ROMs, you can always download 2 zipped ROMs (such as stock deodexed EB01 and superclean EB01 for example), unzip them and use a program like WinMerge (Windows only) to compare the files between the two.
As far as TouchWiz is concerned, it's all personal preference. There was a thread on here where a bunch of people talked about liking the TouchWiz launcher - me included. I like horizontal scrolling, being able to re-arrange the apps to specific pages and I even like the backgrounds to all the apps in the drawer. It is visually more uniform and a lot easier for me to view/launch apps without all the dead space between the icons.
I don't like vertical scrolling and small icons the stock launcher provides. Part of the problem isn't just the launcher, it's the icons. Not all app developers follow the same guidelines for making app icons. Some are 2D, some are 3D, they're all different sizes. I guess the icon backgrounds from TouchWiz or MIUI give them all a uniform look that's appealing to me?
yeah. I'm not giving up touchwiz, or the touchwiz apps, I like how they work, I've liked it since my omnia 2 (even though, admittedly, it did slow that phone down). I also like the continuity it provides from one samsung phone to the next, as I plan on sticking by samsung as long as the phone works like it should for me from the git go (I never had any serious problems with my omnia 2, or fascinate). right now my only setback is only having a linux computer. I need to figure out how to hack android (linux kernel) from ubuntu (linux). you would think two linux OSs would play well together, oh well.
also, is there a list somewhere of .APKs you can delete without effecting touchwiz or android?

There are lists around, but there has been a fair amount of work put into the superclean ROMs. That is a good basis for what you can/can not remove to an extent.
I say to an extent, because there are some things left in, some things removed and some things added to the superclean ROM that doesn't "officially" make it "super clean" to me.
For example, the Memo app can be removed (it has been in superclean) and it won't hurt anything. The additional fonts can be removed, but they haven't been in superclean. There are some Google apps which typically come stock that can be removed - some that don't come stock have been added to superclean - all of which can be installed from the Market.
Sometimes the best way to test is from trial and error (if you do use this method, use ADB and rename files to test - don't delete). If you go asking questions, people will either tell you to Google it, try it yourself, or you'll get 2 different answers that conflict which will cause you to try it yourself anyway.
I don't believe in breaking core functionality.
If I remove the extra fonts in superclean, there is a nice fat force closing sub menu under display settings.
My OCD will not stand for it. This is the same reason Samsung Mms.apk was added back. No multi-part messages= broken, imo.
superclean is a name. If you want a truly SUPER CLEAN rom, then use blackhole, and customize to your liking. Although i think you wil find that in some respects, SC is cleaner.
Typically, apps added to superclean are there to increase functionality. Its not meant to be an aosp replacement/clone.

Interesting.. I never noticed a FC sub menu after removing fonts, but I (like most others else here) trust your judgment 200% over my own.
I'm making a bit of an assumption that if you remove the fonts, then go to display settings and mess with fonts there, it will crash. I've not tested the theory, but thats the main reason I have left them in. That and they take little space, and don't run in the background xD.

I just re-flashed MIUI so I can't give you the step-by-step, but I recall removing a total of 3 files with the string *EUK* and they just don't show up in the fonts list in display settings. The option to download fonts is still there - no FC.
can someone give me a list of some of the apps to avoid freezing/uninstalling to avoid locking up touchwiz and android?

[Q] Help! DeSensing SenseUI Roms in Favor of AOSP...

Ok I'm going to try and make this as short and succinct as possible.
I really dislike the SenseUI messaging app, contacts, calcualtor etc etc. but right now the best, most stable ROMS with kernel goodies seem to be the the ones with SenseUI still in place. I am unning Das_Bamf 1.3 w/ included 1.2GHz OC and I REALLY like it. Phone is wicked fast etc etc. Just don't like Sense, worst is the text messaging
Here what I did:
Downloaded the latest 2.2 CyanogenMod ROM for the MyTouch 4g. Reached inside it (too system/app) and extracted the Mms.apk, Calculator.apk, Contacts.apk, and Calender.apk. I then dumped these on the root of my SD card.
Using Root Explorer went into system/app, located Mms.apk and renamed it to Mms.apk.htc then navigated to SD card, grabbed the AOSP Mms.apk and dropped it in system/app and installed it via Root Explorer.
I did this for the the Mms, calculator, and calender.
the Mms.apk installed no problem. after a reboot I also got the calculator and calender to install.
THE ISSUES:
The contacts wouldn't install no matter how I renamed it or how many times I rebooted (tried renaming the AOSP apk to HtcContacts.apk)
The calculator works great, NO ISSUES
The Calender works great but there is a weird red "squiggle" graphic the lays over the first week of the month no matter what?? I'll try and grab a Screencap if that would be helpful. went back to the SenseUI calender until that gets figured that out.
The Mms.apk installed perfect on the first shot. issue is with the black background not displaying correctly. To fix this I went "menu-->Settings and unchecked "black background" then "back" back" to homescreen then reopen messaging app. this turns everything back t a white background and it looks great. Issue is if you restart the phone or manually force stop messages when you reopen it it returns to the black background!? I have redone the permissions to match the original apk and then reinstalled it in hopes that that would fix it. It didn't. Any guidance?

New Music player

i've been a longtime miui music and playerpro user. N7player definitely takes the cake
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.n7mobile.nplayer
yo! Thanks for the suggestion mate. I've just installed it and it sounds and looks awesome.
I was using a semi-working Miui player port on cm7 as of lately (still better than stock Music.apk), but this made me uninstall it. This is now my default audio player.
Others tried: zimly, neutron mp, winamp, poweramp.
But this seems a winner. Thanks again.
no problem. just wondering how long it'll be before they make it a paid app. I think they should leave it free for awhile and gain more publicity. anyways, I wouldn't mind paying for this app especially if themes can be integrated

Strange; which nightly? I'm on Maniac103's Feb. 20th and it works flawlessly...well, almost.
Here's a couple observations on that player and more:
This player excels in getting (and displaying) album art pics; it even makes them accessible to other apps. So this means that the stock Music.apk can finally and easily have album art covers for pretty much all songs and single mp3 files -that without any additional app such as albumart grabber [which didn't even really solve the problem anyway].
Cm7's lockscreen sees N7 player as the main player; so the lockscreen buttons control it and not the default player [big +1 in my book]. But there's no song name or albumart displayed on lock screen; no biggie and it has its own lock screen mode anyway..
So the only real need of keeping the default player installed is to quick-play a single song from within a file explorer (from the 'download' folder for example) because somehow, if you uninstall it there's no mp3 file type (mime) assiociated with the N7 player. So you get 'mp3 is not recognized file type by the system', 'System can not play this file type' ~or something similar anyway.
Now, all that being said, I still don't like to keep the cm7 default music player for one main reason: it also adds a "Videos" link in the app drawer wich links to a directory of all video files on the phone -hidden or not!!- .
You can't freeze (with TB or other app) that Videos 'shortcut' independently from the Music.apk nor you could (or would really want to) lock it (i.e.: add a password to the default audio player) with an app like Smart App Protector...
Any alternative? Yes: ICS's Music2.apk [attached - taken from the ICS dump release a long time ago].
Disclaimer: OK, this is not 100% proven science here; I did not check logcats and search for problems... but I haven't had any issue with this player yet for what I expect from it - but use at your own risks...
So backup, rename or delete the stock Music.apk from /system/app and place the ICS one in there and dont forget to set its permissions/ownership. Reboot and privacy problem solved!!
N7 and ICS' Music: best free audio combo in town
--> Music2 looks much better as well; more ice-creamy
Got some issues compared to Poweramp
- Can't detect song's cover art. Can't import from SD card. Need to download from internet
- No lyric
But overall is pretty impressive. Hopefully will get more feature soon

Does anyone know if there's a way to get the cm7 lockscreen to control winamp? I use winamp becasue i have lots of flac files i'd rather not have to convert everytime i put them on my phone.
thanks
Very nice, I like the interface a lot but its missing features I like in Poweramp so going to stick with that for now... plus I only just payed for Poweramp so want my moneys worth before changing
Will be keeping an eye on how this app develops though, when things like lockscreen gestures and a few more control options appear I can see this one being a winner
Thanks for the head up
THX. Have a try
n7player Music Player...THX,have a try
It has beautiful UI and the effort on that part is very appreciated. But I must say, it comes nowhere close to the sound quality of Poweramp. None of them do.

Go to Google play, look for "Gallery Pro" by KDJ Software.
I have tried many of the Gallery3d versions floating around, and this one is the best. It is faster at swiping from pic to pic compared to my Stock ICS Gallery.
On the downside, Gallery Pro sometimes shows "gradient banding" with some images.
Alternatively, take and Gallery3d apk, move it to your /system/app/ directory with permissions (use the same permissions as other stock apps in this directory) and reboot and it should install itself. Hopefully.
