Anyone Moving from Table S to Nexus 7? - Sony Tablet S

I'm seriously thinking about moving from the Tablet S to the Nexus 7. The biggest factor influencing me is the ability to keep my software more up-to-date, both through being in the Nexus family and through a more active development community. Android is developing its software so quickly right now (we just got ICS, and JB is already on several devices), and devices will be falling off the map pretty quickly. Having a Nexus device seems like the best way to protect against this.
I'm a little worried about losing the 2" of screen real estate. While the size and weight of the Tablet S make it a little awkward for reading on a plane, it does make for an outstanding movie player. I do think the IR remote is a very good idea, but the reality is that I almost never use it. Even when I have my tablet in my hand, out of habit, I pick up the remote to change channels or adjust the volume. Losing the SD card concerns me a little too, but the cloud services have come a long way, and I'm not sure it's necessary. What else might I lose if I make the switch?
I think I'm going to pick up a Nexus 7, compare the two for a few days, and make a decision at that point. But I'd love to hear from the community about this as well. Anyone else thinking about making this move? When thoughts have you had about the decision? What factors are influencing your choice to stay or go?
EDIT: stupid auto-correct still doesn't like "tablet"

Yep, I'm planning on making this move. The lack of root and an unlocked bootloader has made the Tablet S really unattractive next to a $200 pure Google tablet that will surely have a large dev community behind it. I don't mind the smaller screen, personally. The only thing I think I'd really miss is the native PS3 controller support, which makes playing emulated games on it an ease.

I'll be moving over from the Sony Tablet S to Nexus 7. I hate this tablet, not many devs have taken it onboard to customize it and hack the device. The Nexus 7 should be alot more dev friendly

I'm also thinking about replacing my Tablet S by a Nexus 7 one...
I've spent a lot of time analyzing the works of great developers in order to find a way to gain root on the Tablet S, trying several exploits, mixing tricks used for other devices in hope of discovering something working and have certainly learned a lot of things by doing that but every game becomes boring if you always lose...
Well, it will be no game at all if the Nexus 7 is built like the Galaxy Nexus phone where "fastboot OEM unlock" is enough to unlock the bootloader but it will make myself spend time using my tablet rather than unsuccessfuly try to root it!
PS
Yes, some people -like me- feel sick holding an unrooted android device in their hands. There is no explanation for this, it 's certainly stupid but that's the way it goes. Must be genetic

I called the Staples down the street from my office today to see if they had any N7s. Rep said they had four that just came off a truck. I went and grabbed one.
I'm just starting to play around with it. My initial reactions are: 1) the build quality feels amazing, and 2) it freaking flies.
Honestly, if I don't find a legitimate deal-breaker, this thing probably has a permanent home.
Another huge perk that I've not seen mentioned yet--while being so basic--is the ability to charge with micro USB. That damn Sony charger really limits how mobile the Tablet S truly is.

Two questions, if you please :
- does the Nexus 7 offer SD card support?
- have you try booting into fastboot mode and try the "fastboot OEM unlock" command (there should be a confirmation box allowing to leave without doing it)?

No SD card support, which is a slight concern. I have a 64 gb card in my Tablet S. Naturally, I chose the 16 over the 8 gb N7. With Google Play, though, I really shouldn't need to much space.
There is a toolkit for unlocking the bootloader, if that's what you're asking. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight. I don't see any options for unlocking directly from fastboot.

Im Stopping Development :(

Galaxy S WiFi/Player 5.0
OK guys and gurls here it goes
Basically I have enjoyed my time with this community and have learnt a hell of a lot to do with ROM development and have therefore used this knowledge to create my own ROM for the Galaxy s WiFi 5.0, ICS-Crumble which I am humble has been downloaded alot of times and has received great support so a HUGE thanks there. It has also allowed me to port ROMs like Hydr0g3n and others.
There comes a time when we move on lol and unfortunately that time has come. Basically I don't really want to go into great detail on why ive sold the device but im heading to University in Sep and I have to pay £400 deposit now and then £9000 a year myself so i really need the money lol
So yea thats me saying im stopping development on my ROMs but im not leaving XDA completely (im still active on the Galaxy s2) . So thanks guys and hopefully i have contributed to this great device.
Peace out

Good luck with your degree and I understand that uni is expensive (I've been going to open days recently and its £9000 a year + living fees ) . I may also stop developing for the SGP as I'm getting a nexus 7. However I don't really want to abandon this device so I will try my best to continue devving here

Same with me, I will be receiving my HTC one s next week so I will probably be helping out with the development community over there. I won't abandon the galaxy player entirely, but most of my time and efforts will be spent over in the one s forums.
Thanks everyone for support! Too bad these galaxy players were never very popular with developers..

I've been reading through the specs for the Nexus 7 and the SGP 5.0 has slightly better specs in some areas.
The Nexus 7 only has b/g/n wifi but SGP has a/g/b/n so better wifi connectivity (faster, less interference on SGP)
SGP has a rear camera although it doesn't work on any ICS roms
The SGP has physical buttons (I don't like on-screen buttons so much)
The SGP has a micro-SD card slot
The SGP comes with an unlocked bootloader (Nexus bootloaders are easy to unlock with a fastboot command but it wipes data and can prevent ota updates)
However, the Nexus 7 is still an amazing device and I'm sorry for the slightly off topic post
No dude, don't stop yourself from getting a nexus 7 because of us! Face it; galaxy player hardware is 3 generations old, and with amazing devices like the nexus 7 coming out, the life of it is over. I don't think many people will choose a single core gingerbread device over a quad core jb device, so the galaxy player is finished, mostly. It was an epic device, and if Samsung had marketed it right, could have been a huge hit. To late, so time to move on. Even if I do get a nexus 7, I will probably keep up on my galaxy player, for sentimental purposes, lol!

[Q] Is it worth to buy Sony Tablet S right now?

I have been meaning to wait for Xperia Tablet S 3G version to come out. But I'm tired of waiting, who knows when or even if it does come out at all in my country.
Not to mention the problem they're having right now. It can take ages to come out here.
Right now, there's only the Wifi version of Sony Tablet S that are available to buy. No 3G version. And the price for 16 GB one is about $480 if converted from my currency.
So I'm thinking of having Sony Tablet S 3G-16 GB version imported for about $570. What do you guys think?
I'd say no, the Sony Tablet S is totally different to the Xperia Tablet S - I felt that last years model was plasticy despite its good build quality and high price tag and the performance was poor.
Stick the wait out and you'll be sure to make the right choice.
absolutely not! other than the fact that tablet s (original one) hasn't that great build quality it has a lot of problem in term of modding.. i would go for a samsung tablet if you are interested in modding..
Id say yes! Is an excellent tablet.
The xperia tablet s production is stoped because a defect in the construction

And I prefer sony cause it's not common (maybe some of you find it strange, but I'm just quirky like that )

I agree that Xperia tablet is better than the original tablet S, but I really don't feel like waiting any longer.
From the looks of thing, it's most likely won't come out here until at least early 2013. Plus, there's no guarantee they will release the 3G version immediately. And having a wifi only tablet, here in my town, is just useless I think.
So, I'll just use STS now, and replace it with xperia tablet later when it comes out.

I got my girlfriend a Nexus 7, and although not quite as feature rich as the Tablet S, Root was so simple litterally a child could do it, it is soooooooooo much faster, and 16GB was plenty for her. 7 inch screen makes it sooooooooo much lighter/portable too. 32gb model will be out soon. Thinking of selling my Tablet S and get the 32GB Nexus 7 instead. I have litterally tried for weeks to get my Tablet S rooted and hate the propriotory connector, etc.
My 2 cents worth.

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

Nexus 10 was in my hand tonight...

Finally found one in my local Walmart, Massapequa NY if anyone is interested, but it was a 32gb, not the one I could easily afford right now. Had I not bought the Note 2, this would be a different thread. So damn close. My major concern is that it would be to heavy and/or big to be comfortable. Of course I couldn't open the box to get a better idea either. So frustrating.

For what it's worth, I find it really comfortable to hold. I have average-sized hands and, admittedly, not the strongest wrists. I don't find it too heavy at all--marginally lighter than the iPad (3rd Gen) that I used to own. Fits in my hand nicely, and the tacky rubber housing helps. This is for both portrait and landscape.
It does look humongous in portrait mode, though, but easy to hold nonetheless.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I probably would have grabbed the 16gb and smooth talked my girl, but $499+ right now... Probably wouldn't have gone over so well. My Big concern is will I use the damn thing? I just want one so damn bad though!!

I found one at Sam's. It was the display one and it was amazing. Really comfortable to hold and the screen is just amazing. I loved it, too bad it's out of my saved money..

My Nexus 10 is going to be a while longer now, my laptop broke, since my Macbook doesn't play nice with my android toys, I need to replace that crap now. Sucks.

it's amazing and useful.
Very useful.
I get more reading done and efficiently on the Nexus 10 than I do with the actual textbooks. Not sure why I still buy the textbooks when I have the digital/ off copies though...

Almost every Staples I've been in that sells tablets has a display model of the nexus 10. Could always go in one of those and poke at it with it in your hand to see if you like it!
I didnt know that, I damn. I have to go check it out. Thanks.

+1. Got mine in the mail this afternoon. Loving it so far and wish we'll have some developers support. :good:
Got one as well. Is V1.39 the latest software version?

That is what I have on mine.

I've 1.39 too. I've a question, do you guys find there's a line of color on the right side of the screen (when landscape) is not correctly display? Specially when running a rgb test, can clearly see the line comes out green when it should be red. My roommate has one too and he has the same problem on his venue 8. I wonder is it just our units or its also the same with everyone.

I'm afraid there is not a haptic feedback feature. I just checked and do not see it in any settings.

aww dat sucks, oh well hows the da to day running of the tab? is it efficient, much lag?
I have been using it for reading and browsing mostly and it works really well. One thing I noticed is how accurate the colors are on the screen. I compared it to my Nexus 5 and it seems the colors are more accurate on the Venue. (I compared my favorite teams colors.) I think for daily activities this tablet works good thanks to the speedy 2Ghz processor. I haven't done any gaming though. Overall, I like it.
Oh, camera doesnt have flash and the shutter is slow. But I'm not gonna be taking pictures with this thing

Sounds good then I'm a student so my number reason for wanting this one is the size and use of using day evernote or super note with it

Anyone know about getting 4.4 on this thing?
I'm all for rooting and what not, but I really want the photo editor of KitKat. Im a photographer and that editor looks super cool so 4.4 is important to me.

Wow, so I got to play with one of these today and while I like the size, my goodness the screen was unusable. Not that it wouldn't take my input its that it would hit somewhere else on the screen. It was a floor model so naturally it was messed around with and in German but I could not for the life of me get the Gallery app to open.
I want to have tablet as a portfolio of sorts for my photography so I wanted to see how images looked. Sure I could get the Nexus 7 with its higher resolution but I like the size of 8" tablets. That 1" really does equate to more screen room. Heck 7" isnt much bigger than my 5.2" phone. The only real other options are the Samsungs Tab/Note which I am not found of and the LG Pad/Tab 8.3 which would be my first choice except the price.
I should receive mine in the next few days! Hope that a dev will also get one and start looking at it

May have been a bad unit or may be it was lacking the firmware updates (there were 2 since launch). The gallery app works as it is suppose too. While the resolution isn't the best compared to a 1080p screen the colors look very good. Not in "saturated" good but in "natural" good. You're right about the extra inch: 8 incher feels more like tablet than the 7 incher does.

Good find. But seems like thin info and unless I don't know about them, I don't believe there are any models with 4G as noted.

as with all newer phones and tablets, remember tech companies like samsung, dell acer, etc like to push out updates for their newest devices first then going backwards to slightly older and continuing till they want to cut em loose with the updates. so that means 4.4 will be released to the venue 8 is thats only inevitable, the question just remains when? maybe not till holiday season is over though simply because im assuming dell is gonna have a goood ole time keeping up with production once tomorrow and the weekend hits.
who knows? just enjoy it till then.
so excited for toorrow to order
btw how long does shipping usually take? (if anyone ordered in in canada yet)
