Losing battery even while charging? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm curious. I am not sure this was how it was before but I notice that when using the phone while charging (with the AC charger), I would still drain battery. Is this normal?
Thanks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

No, it is not.
While on charger you should gain on battery, not discharge.
At least if you use phone in a normal way.
With BT and GPS navigation on (and some data traffic) my phone gains charge...

Yes, it may happen. It depends on the mAh of the power source.
Usually the USB port delivers less mAh then the AC power source.
In that case, if you are running a demanding application (games especially) the power consumption could exceed the charging rate.

It's possible, yes.
Depends on what the phone is doing at the moment, i.e. when it's on 100% CPU load for example.
Happens everytime I encrypt my S2 a rather full internal and external SDs storages, because the phone is "doing a lot of work".
If you then maybe add enabled WiFi, BT, GPS.... yeah, the power gets sucked out of the battery faster then the AC can pour new one in.

Only thing I'm doing is using tweetcaster while opening the ocasional web page with Dolphin browser, nothing intensive. I'm using the standard AC charger that came with the phone.
This morning after unplugging it, I noticed that in a couple hours time lapse, the phone was hot all the time and lost about 30% battery while on standby. So, I rebooted it and it stopped feeling hot on touch. Battery drain is still somewhat fast but not as fast as this morning.
I'm attaching a Battery Stats screenshot in case it helps.
Thanks
P. S. I'm using Hydra h2o rom

And there is the root of all evil.
And the phone getting hot also hints at high CPU load.
I am using TweetCaster myself a lot, and sometimes the app goes crazy and uses 100% of the CPU -> high load -> hot phone and empty battery.
I can reproduce it by deleting the temp folder of TweetCaster on the int. storage and either waiting some time or rebooting, the app will go wild at 100% CPU load for sure.

Ah ok then. Lol. Now I know what to do! Unless, do you recommend me another twitter app that is more battery friendly
Thanks sir.

Well, it's a good app, I don't wan't to bad-talk it.
Sometimes you just need to keep an eye on it, esp. in situations where the int. storage is not available for apps (like when connected via USB mass storage to the PC).
Usually killing it off from taskmanager is enough, on some not-so-often occasions I needed to "kill -9" the process from a shell (Termnial Emulator app or via adb).
I also got a neat little thing called "CPUNotify" (on Google Play) running on my phone, it adds a little icon to the notification bar that always shows you the current CPU load - that way you can literally "see" spikes in load once they happen.

Some time ago I had the same problem.
The problem was on the original Samsung charger. It has shown that it loads, but it lost battery.
I bought another charger and now it charges

its possible. I see this situation everytime I travel. In car I use stock car charger and on phone ussually runs navigation, video recording software and plays music. And battery is drained!!! If additionaly I start My Track, then 7-8 hours and phone is dead. On hot days even had situation, when battery reached 65C temp and phone refused to charge it. So at this point SGSII is real crap

help! how to disable useles services?

Recently, my phone is leaking power in a crazy speed. (i9100 4.0.3)
Before sleep, I turned off bluetooth, wifi, 3G, gps, all motion sensors. Switched it to flight mode. After about 7-hour sleep, 10% battery was lost. This happened for the last few month.
I installed DX BatteryBooster, from its monitor I learnt that almost all the power went to Android System, if click at it, it says included packages:
Remote Device Management Service.
Software update
Video Maker
What are these services how do I turn them off?
Thank you
Use titanium backup to either freeze or uninstall those apps. Requires root access.

Your battery could be at fault or sometimes I've had an app cause really high decreased battery life. I would buy or borrow a cheap battery to test this out and see if your getting around the same results with the other battery.

I had given some thought on battery itself, but then i decided that it is the problem of some kernel process.
A few months ago when overnight battery loss was under 5%, the battery consumed on "android system" and "Display" are pretty much the same. Now, "android system" consumes way more.

What should I check to find out what is using so much power.

I'm currently getting ridiculous battery drains(like 500 to 980 ma) when my phone isn't plugged in. My phone also gets really hot. This isn't constant but has happed a lot even right after restarting my phone. I have been using Battery Monitor Widget. It might be off or wrong readings but the heat and the speed my battery is draining tell me it isn't.
Details
3.7 volt battery
Drain of 500-900ma when only using 4g no apps open
Clean rom 4.3
Battery usage general show most battery is from display.
Sometime even when it plugged in to a htc usb charger it still has shown around -143 ma.
Any ideas
I'm pretty sure just having 4g on entitles your phone to half of its natural battery life XD
Typically a lot of drain comes from disturbance of deep sleep, I believe there's "wakelock" or something similar on the android market that helps prevent and/or shows what is causing it.
Of course, common issue, hard to say if it isn't something more generic
currently I have it sitting here charging with screen on only as far as I can tell. It for about 10 minutes was telling me it was charging at 32 ma then it went up 205 ma and bounced between that and 105 ma for a bout ten minutes. It went from room tempature to 44.7 degrees celsius.
Now it skipped to -55 ma (while still ac charging) for a few minutes spiked to +653 ma and now is back to 100 ma. That seem to be all over the place and the phone is very warm.
To me that indicates either a problem or a huge drain of power.
Am I just that far off. Has anybody looked at the reading from battery monitor widget or something similair to see what a normal drain is in ma or a normal charge.
maybe an unruley app running in the background? check what's using your battery: settings- > about phone- >battery- > battery use.
It usually shows the majority of the power (50% at least) going to the screen and not much else notable.
Also on a probably unconnected note it produces ridiculous RF interference. But only when charging. At work it was causing crackling in both my desk phone and laptop and when in my dorm it was causing loud cracking in my speakers well over 2 feet away. Is that normal for everyone else.
Start uninstalling or freezing apps that you've installed

This is also my problem. I have been experiencing huge power drain ever since installing the 3.11.605.22 leak. I tried different kernels, rolling back to GB. Went S-off and tried different radios, and then most recently moved up to the new 3.13.605.7 leak, and am currently on CleanROM DE 1.3 and nothing has improved.
Sometimes my mA will go beyond -1000!
Would appreciate any suggestions as I have no clue what to do about it.
I would suggest downloading System Panel from playstore. It shows you what's running and how much power its using from your device.

That didn't do it. Down 12% in an hour with limited use.
Say, anyone else who is getting decent battery times have Battery Monitor Widget and are willing to give us battery-challenged folks an idea for what a typical mA draw range is for your device when you are using it?

Did you recently connect to Kies because I was having probs with my SGS2 getting really hot and losing power as a result of Kies/a dodgy USB lead?

Turn off Google backup, face awake, try that for starters
First of all, switch off your phone for a while to see if there is problem in battery or its the apps you are running. If you think it is a stupid step,
Then try using some software like JuiceDefender or something.
In app manager, kill apps that are useless.
Also turn off features like bluetooth, gps etc. if on.
Reduce phone's brightness, recommended to set it to "auto".
Turn off useless vibrations and LED notifications.
You should now see significant improvemance in battery life.
Hope this helps
I have taken all these steps gone ahead to remove live wall paper, auto sync disabled, brightness is set at auto. And its still the same. I don't want to tow the line of hard reset because am not sure that would solve the problem coupled with the time it would take to get my sgs3 to suite me
Sent from my GT-P5100 using xda premium
I use juice defender which manages everything for me, an overnight schedule ensures the battery only drops by 1 or 2%
Sent via TCP/IP
okay so i thought i had a battery problem before i tried putting my phone aside (meaning no games, no internet browsing and no video streaming nothing, just using whatsapp and leaving facebook connected. I also have lots of apps and games installed over 15 or something)
If you decreasing screen time you will notice a HUGE difference (24hrs in my case), its basically down to usage, I have tried over 10 different roms and kernels as well as the v6 supercharger script, i dont ever notice the difference, EVER. unless of course i use a minimalistic rom with almost nothing to play around with, but if thats how u like it then go for that. Id say following all the fundamental steps will take you a long way
my final advice:
less screen time
when on the screen use the least brightness available
decrease stock brightness even more if you can
less app usage
if your not one to constantly play with your phone and customize stuff on it try installing a minimal rom like
|ROM|XXBLG8| IOIDroid Super Slim Edition | Buttery Smooth | V1.0.0 LIVE !! |
or
[ROM][4.0.4] Slim ICS (SGS3) - Clean, Simple & Fast (63MB)
i dont know if this is a placebo of not, but sometimes i notice improvements when i undervolt, underclock and limit to only dual core. believe it or not sometimes it has little or the adverse effect of saving battery
good luck man
And another question, which can be solved through the search function or Google -.-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937080
So here is my experience. Have been using android for years, have had an hd2 so I know how to get good battery life results. For some reason I easily lost 15-20% overnight with just the gsm 2g radio on. No matter what I did it drained fast even though deep sleep was fine, all extras sync and etc were off. 3hrs screen on time in 14 hours and it was dead.
I kept waiting for an update to solve this and it never came even though I was force checking it.
I ended up factory resetting the phone and as soon as it booted up an ota update popped up. Since then I am having nearly 6hrs screen on time in 40hrs,which is amazing.

Greetings, I have seen a similar problem back in our hox forums. I have come here in peace to help, though. Recently, someone suggested bump charging, it's like a natural way of making your battery recalibrate itself without wiping battery stats or stuff like that.
First off, charge the battery until it says 100% while the device is on.
Then remove the charger, turn off the power, and charge again.
Remove the charger again when it says full while the device is off.
Turn it on again, then when it's properly booted, charge again, but don't use the device until it says it's fully charged already.
Mind you, we're not sure if it's just a placebo or not. Some claims to have had better battery life after doing this for once a month. I haven't tried it yet, but I thought I could share it here too.

Just to offer two cents from my experience with this phone.
I recently got a replacement for my s3.. the details of that are for another post, but this relates to battery:
when I first got the phone i started using it right away. I did not charge the battery until I got to the office and charged the phone while using it the first day.
when I got the second replacement phone I already had a second battery.
This battery was fully charged and immediately used that in the new phone. fully charged the samsung battery before I used it.
I noticed significantly better performance with the second phone. I think it was because of the way i treated the battery strait out of the box.
any one agree, or have a similar experience?

[Q] Screen using 70% of battery

Hi guys,
I'm losing my patience with my S2. I can't put a finger when this started but ive noticed that the screen is taking up an awful lot of battery. Today for example I have taken it off charge 8hours ago and it's down to 14% despite not using it for much (except texts and internet a few times). When I check the battery monitor on settings it says that the screen has used 70% after being on for 1hr 17m, phone idle is 2nd with only 11%. I'm using the Resurrection Remix rom but I only loaded this after the problems started in an attempt to try and fix it.
I've uploaded some screenshots, theirs a sharp drop in the battery as the phone crashed and it seemed to of took a while to find out to charge again. Also Betterbattery only had data up to the point when it rebooted itself.
Thats totally normal.
Im not using Resurrection remix rom so i cannot comment on that,
but my screen is always 60%+.
The only solution is to lower the brightness, and turn off the Touch lights.
Really? It just seems like its using a lot of battery. The brightness is already very low (20-25%).
Seems like how long the battery lasts vary from phone to phone though by the looks of the forum. 15 hours doesn't seem too bad compared to what some people on here are getting anyway.

85% after having used it for 13 minutes? If you want to talk about your screen consuming battery atleast let it run down to around 15-20% before commenting. And it depends on how you use the phone as well. And I dont mean merely in term of screen brightness. If you spend most of the time browsing the web, sending texts, watching videos, etc its pretty much a given your screen will be the highest battery consumer. Try spending most of the time talking on the phone and you will see a difference in the proportion of battery the screen consumes.
Also, the screen is the single biggest I/O interface for any touchscreen device. If that doesnt consume maximum battery, what else will? 60-70% battery consumed by the screen is pretty much the norm, mate

Thanks for the info sir...If I may ask OT if I set my phone to no background processes. Will it also disable the ability of my phone to receive call or txt messages? Thanks for the reply sir.
The phone's battery indicator will take the amount of time the phone has been off the charger and then calculate the amount of time the screen has been on.
For example if the phone has been off the charger 20 minutes and the screen has been on for 15 minutes of those 20 minutes:
15/20 = 0.75
0.75*100 (get to percentage) = 75% screen time
Cheers for the replies. I've just tried turning off sync today and my battery has seriously improved so I'm guessing it's something like Facebook etc that is causing problems with the battery. Nothing seems noticeable on bettebattery app but to be fair I struggle to understand half the stuff the stats talk about.

Yeah..syncing apps tend to drain the battery a lot with wakelocks. EDIT:for apps like your email, switching off the auto-sync option and instead sync on demand helps as the phone doesn't then have to periodically keep waking up and checking for new mails.
Google apps like latitude are another notorious cause of wake locks and eventually battery consumption. If you can do without location services, it'll help with your battery life.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No offence, but syncing email takes very little battery, especially with the stock email apps.
Syncing such things as Facebook and news apps will cause some battery drain.
Also when flashing new ROMs, it's recommended that you backup anything you need and wipe the SD memories. There can be differences in ROMs and the way things are structured and can cause drain.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Actually I was curious about the SD card as well. I've not wiped the card or the internal memory since I got the phone and its become a bit of a mess. Is it alright to format both of them without causing problems except for the apps which use them?

Well wiping the external SD Card means you will lose your music, photos, videos and any apps saved to it. Connect it you your computer and then back it up. As for internal, not too sure what you will lose. Not too sure why you would wipe them, screen time isn't caused by them. If your battery is draining quickly, download BetterBatteryStats and see if something is causing a kernel wakelock.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
To wipe, use the factory reset (you will have to install your apps again, unless they are backup up by Google, check settibgs) and identify which locations your external and internal sd are, format just those 2 but don't format system!
This has nothing to do with screen time etc but may help the battery drain. It's only a possibility and one which you can try if you like.

I've been on my phone for two hours now, phone has drained 70%. All I did was Skype my wife, text only, for about an hour and a half then a half hour Skype call, with some Internet surfing in the background. Everything is off, literally, besides mobile internet. Facebook is disabled, Twitter is disabled, every other app I don't use is disabled, everything has auto sync off, I have lux installed so was running on - 50% for most of the time, kill all apps as soon as I'm done with them, battery saver on, tried gsam and wld, no dice, sleep is on, the only app I have running in the background is mobie.
Please help me!! I feel like I have a smartphone but I can't use it. Might as well have a 1999 Nokia for all the good this one does me.
That sounds not bad at all, you ARE using Skype after all and it will take a toll on your battery, seems to me you are expecting dumb phone level battery while using a known battery killer

I've looked at others Skype battery consumption. Doesn't seem illogical to lose 40% over a couple hours with only a half hour call, but 70%? When most of it was just essentially texting? That seems inordinately high. Should two episodes of a TV show on Netflix kill my battery as well? Doesn't seem like a useful phone if you get about two hours of screen time.
Try getting your battery to 0% turn it off, charge it to 100% while the phone is shut off.
If that does not improve it your Rom is having issues and you will need to flash the stock Rom via RUU, if you battery still sucks then your battery is no bueno

Thanks for the advice mate. I've heard that draining these new batteries to zero does more harm than good though?
